Abstract:This is an exciting moment for us to announce the winners of the 2020 Sanofi-Cell Research Outstanding Review Article Award:Dr Eran Elinav,1 for his review paper entitled "Interaction between microbiota and immunity in health and disease";and the Sanofi-Cell Research Outstanding Research Article Award:Drs Lu Lu,Shibo Jiang,Yun Zhu,2 for their research paper entitled "Inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 (previously 2019-nCoV) infection by a highly potent pan-coronavirus fusion inhibitor targeting its spike protein that harbors a high capacity to mediate membrane fusion";Drs Hongkui Deng and Tuoping Luo,3 for their research paper entitled"Elimination of senescent cells by β-galactosidase-targeted prodrug attenuates inflammation and restores physical function in aged mice".The award consists of a prize of ￥25,000 for the Outstanding Review Article Award and ￥40,000 for the Out-standing Research Article Award sponsored by Sanofi.

Abstract:At the upcoming 2024 ASHG meeting in November we will recognize two winners of the AJHG Award for Outstanding Trainee Publication. The award was initiated in 2001, and until last year when ASHG discontinued the use of proper names for its awards, it was called the "Cotterman Award," named for C.W. Cotterman, the first AJHG editor-in-chief. I'd like to use this opportunity to provide some background about the process whereby the awardees are identified and the significance of the award.

Abstract:The Nobel Prize of Physiology or Medicine 2023 was awarded jointly to two researchers, Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman, for their discoveries taking part in the development of effective mRNA vaccines against COVID-19. The accelerated development of the novel mRNA-lipid nanoparticle vaccines provided highly effective protection against severe disease or death, and reduction in symptomatic illness, before a full year had passed from the beginning of the pandemic.
