Abstract:This is an exciting moment for us to announce the winners of the 2020 Sanofi-Cell Research Outstanding Review Article Award:Dr Eran Elinav,1 for his review paper entitled "Interaction between microbiota and immunity in health and disease";and the Sanofi-Cell Research Outstanding Research Article Award:Drs Lu Lu,Shibo Jiang,Yun Zhu,2 for their research paper entitled "Inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 (previously 2019-nCoV) infection by a highly potent pan-coronavirus fusion inhibitor targeting its spike protein that harbors a high capacity to mediate membrane fusion";Drs Hongkui Deng and Tuoping Luo,3 for their research paper entitled"Elimination of senescent cells by β-galactosidase-targeted prodrug attenuates inflammation and restores physical function in aged mice".The award consists of a prize of ￥25,000 for the Outstanding Review Article Award and ￥40,000 for the Out-standing Research Article Award sponsored by Sanofi.

Abstract:We are pleased to announce the winners of the 2021 Sanofi-Cell Research Outstanding Research Article Award:Dr Qiangfeng Cliff Zhang,for his paper entitled"Predicting dynamic cellular protein-RNA interactions by deep learning using in vivo RNA structures";1 Drs Boxun Lu and Yu Ding,for their paper entitled"Degradation of lipid droplets by chimeric autophagy-tethering compounds";2 and Drs Chen-Yu Zhang,Qipeng Zhang and Fangyu Wang for their paper entitled"SIDT1-dependent absorption in the stomach mediates host uptake of dietary and orally administered microRNAs".3 Each award consists of a prize of ￥40,000 sponsored by Sanofi.

Abstract:Winning a scientific prize is always a welcome honor and receiving the Aselli Award in 2023 was a particularly pleasant surprise. The following text provides a brief summary of the research carried out by my group in Oxford that led to the discovery of the lymphatic endothelial marker LYVE-1 and its emerging role as a pivotal receptor controlling the entry of immune cells and metastatic tumor cells to lymphatic capillaries in peripheral tissues. As a basic scientist and relatively late comer to the field of lymphology, my hope is that a closer partnership of basic and clinical research will help explain the intricate workings of the lymphatics and improve the picture for patients suffering from much neglected lymphatic disorders.

The accelerated development of the novel mRNA-lipid nanoparticle vaccines provided highly effective protection against severe disease or death, and reduction in symptomatic illness, before a full year had passed from the beginning of the pandemic.
