Abstract:Abstract Chern insulators have been generalized to many classical wave systems and thereby lead to many potential applications such as robust waveguide, quantum computation and high-performance laser. However, the band structure of a material can be either topologically trivial or nontrivial, depending on how the crystal structure is designed. Here, we propose a second Chern crystal in a four-dimensional parameter space by introducing two extra synthetic translation dimensions. Since topology of the bulk bands in the synthetic translation space is intrinsically nontrivial, our proposed four-dimensional crystal is guaranteed to be topologically nontrivial regardless of the crystal's detailed configuration. We derive the topologically protected modes on the lower dimensional boundaries of such a crystal via dimension reduction. Remarkably, we observe the one-dimensional gapless dislocation modes and confirm their robustness in experiments. Our findings provide novel perspectives on the topologically nontrivial crystals and may inspire the designs of classical wave devices.

Topological Crystalline Bose Insulator in Two Dimensions via Entanglement Spectrum

Abstract:Strongly correlated analogues of topological insulators have been explored in systems with purely on-site symmetries, such as time-reversal or charge conservation. Here, we use recently developed tensor network tools to study a quantum state of interacting bosons which is featureless in the bulk, but distinguished from an atomic insulator in that it exhibits entanglement which is protected by its spatial symmetries. These properties are encoded in a model many-body wavefunction that describes a fully symmetric insulator of bosons on the honeycomb lattice at half filling per site. While the resulting integer unit cell filling allows the state to bypass `no-go' theorems that trigger fractionalization at fractional filling, it nevertheless has nontrivial entanglement, protected by symmetry. We demonstrate this by computing the boundary entanglement spectra, finding a gapless entanglement edge described by a conformal field theory as well as degeneracies protected by the non-trivial action of combined charge-conservation and spatial symmetries on the edge. Here, the tight-binding representation of the space group symmetries plays a particular role in allowing certain entanglement cuts that are not allowed on other lattices of the same symmetry, suggesting that the lattice representation can serve as an additional symmetry ingredient in protecting an interacting topological phase. Our results extend to a related insulating state of electrons, with short-ranged entanglement and no band insulator analogue.

Experimental discovery of bulk-disclination correspondence

Abstract: The past decade has witnessed the emergence of abundant topological phases protected by crystalline symmetries, such as topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) [1, 2]. Recent discoveries of higher-order [3-6] and fragile [7-10] TCIs illustrate that gapless edge states may not be a universal feature of TCIs, and therefore request alternative experimental signatures. Here, we demonstrate that disclinations, i.e., rotational topological defects in crystals, can serve as a novel probe of TCIs without invoking edge boundaries. Using photonic crystals, i.e., artificial periodic structures giving access to versatile manipulations of light [11], we observe topologically-protected photonic modes localized at disclinations in photonic TCIs. We create physical realizations of photonic TCIs and disclinations using macroscopic dielectric structures based on hexagonal lattices. By driving the photonic system across a topological transition via tuning the unit-cell geometry, we find that the topological disclination modes disappear in the trivial phase. The experimental discovery of the bulk-disclination correspondence unveils a new horizon in topological physics, while its photonic realization provides a pathway toward topological photonics [12-22] beyond the bulk-edge correspondence.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus"> We discuss recent advances in the study of topological insulators protected by spatial symmetries by reviewing three representative, theoretical examples. In three dimensions (3D), these states of matter are generally characterized by the presence of gapless boundary states at surfaces that respect the protecting spatial symmetry. We discuss the appearance of these topological states in both crystals with negligible spin–orbit coupling and a fourfold rotational symmetry, as well as in mirror-symmetric crystals with sizable spin–orbit interaction characterized by the so-called <em class="a-plus-plus">mirror Chern number</em>. Finally, we also discuss similar topological crystalline states in one-dimensional (1D) insulators, such as nanowires or atomic chains, with mirror symmetry. There, the prime physical consequence of the non-trivial topology is the presence of quantized end charges. </p>

Abstract:Abstract The classification of topological insulators predicts the existence of high-dimensional topological phases that cannot occur in real materials, as these are limited to three or fewer spatial dimensions. We use electric circuits to experimentally implement a four-dimensional (4D) topological lattice. The lattice dimensionality is established by circuit connections, and not by mapping to a lower-dimensional system. On the lattice’s three-dimensional surface, we observe topological surface states that are associated with a nonzero second Chern number but vanishing first Chern numbers. The 4D lattice belongs to symmetry class AI, which refers to time-reversal-invariant and spinless systems with no special spatial symmetry. Class AI is topologically trivial in one to three spatial dimensions, so 4D is the lowest possible dimension for achieving a topological insulator in this class. This work paves the way to the use of electric circuits for exploring high-dimensional topological models.

Abstract:Topological crystalline insulators are a class of materials with a bulk energy gap and edge or surface modes, which are protected by crystalline symmetry, at their boundaries. They have been realized in electronic systems: in particular, in SnTe. In this work, we propose a mechanism to realize photonic boundary states topologically protected by crystalline symmetry. We map this one-dimensional system to a two-dimensional lattice model with opposite magnetic fields, as well as opposite Chern numbers in its even and odd mirror parity subspaces, thus corresponding to a topological mirror insulator. Furthermore, we test the robustness of the boundary modes depending on their mirror parity by performing time dependent evolution simulations in a photonic setting with realistic experimental parameters.

Abstract:Quasicrystals allow for symmetries that are impossible in crystalline materials, such as eight-fold rotational symmetry, enabling the existence of novel higher-order topological insulators in two dimensions without crystalline counterparts. However, it remains an open question whether three-dimensional higher-order topological insulators and Weyl-like semimetals without crystalline counterparts can exist. Here, we demonstrate the existence of a second-order topological insulator by constructing and exploring a three-dimensional model Hamiltonian in a stack of Ammann-Beenker tiling quasicrystalline lattices. The topological phase has eight chiral hinge modes that lead to quantized longitudinal conductances of $4 e^2/h$. We show that the topological phase is characterized by the winding number of the quadrupole moment. We further establish the existence of a second-order topological insulator with time-reversal symmetry, characterized by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological invariant. Finally, we propose a model that exhibits a higher-order Weyl-like semimetal phase, demonstrating both hinge and surface Fermi arcs. Our findings highlight that quasicrystals in three dimensions can give rise to higher-order topological insulators and semimetal phases that are unattainable in crystals.

Abstract:We investigate the properties of a two-dimensional quasicrystal in the presence of a uniform magnetic field. In this configuration, the density of states (DOS) displays a Hofstadter butterfly-like structure when it is represented as a function of the magnetic flux per tile. We show that the low-DOS regions of the energy spectrum are associated with chiral edge states, in direct analogy with the Chern insulators realized with periodic lattices. We establish the topological nature of the edge states by computing the topological Chern number associated with the bulk of the quasicrystal. This topological characterization of the non-periodic lattice is achieved through a local (real-space) topological marker. This work opens a route for the exploration of topological insulating materials in a wide range of non-periodic lattice systems, including photonic crystals and cold atoms in optical lattices.

Abstract:In recent years, topological insulator and topological semimetal have drawn much attention, due to the novel properties such as robust edge states, chiral anomaly, diverging local density of states and so on. However, the dimension of momentum space is less than three, which limits the exploration the physics in higher dimensions. Take advantage of the concept of synthetic dimension, we can construct higher dimensional spaces to realize more amazing phenomenon including Weyl surface in 5D space, 4D Quantum Hall effect and so on. Some works also focused on probing the topological physics of non-Hermitian systems, which leads to additional novel consequences such as the transformation of the Weyl point into an exceptional ring when introducing a non-Hermitian term. In this work, we give a flexible platform to investigate the PT-symmetric topological physics in 4D synthetic space. Here, based on 1D photonic crystal with a complex seven-layer unit cell, we construct a 4D synthetic space with two momentum vectors and two geometric parameters. Before introducing the non-Hermitian term, the system shows a 2D Nodal-hyperedge in 4D space. If we add gain and loss in to the PCs but preserving PT symmetry, the 2D hyperedge will be transformed into a 3D exceptional hypersurface, on which the Hamiltonian becomes defective. Such 3D exceptional hypersurface also guarantees the unidirectional reflectionless resonance in 1D PCs even with oblique incidence. Furthermore, we also find the existence of PT-symmetric interface states in our systems, which will give rise to the strong field enhancement, and is quite useful in nonlinear and quantum optics.
Two Classes of Singularities and Novel Topology in a Specially Designed Synthetic Photonic Crystals.

Abstract:Zak phase and topological protected edge state are usually studied in one-dimensional (1D) photonic systems with spatial inversion symmetry (SIS). In this work, we find that specific classes of 1D structure without SIS can be mapped to a system with SIS and also exhibit novel topology, which manifest as phase cut lines (PCLs) in our specially designed synthetic photonic crystals (SPCs). Zak phase defined in SIS is extended to depict the topology of PCLs after redefinition, and a topological protected edge state is also achieved in our 1D structure without SIS. In our SPCs, the relationship between Chern numbers in two dimensions (2D) and the extended Zak phases of 1D PCLs is given, which are bound by the first type singularities. Higher Chern numbers and multi-chiral edge states are achieved utilizing the concept of synthetic dimensions. The effective Hamiltonian is given, based on which we find that the band edges of each PCL play a role analogous to the valley pseudospin, and our SPC is actually a new type of valley photonic crystal that is usually studied in graphene-like honeycomb lattice. The chiral valley edge transport is also demonstrated. In higher dimensions, the shift of the first type singularity in expanded parameter space will lead to the Weyl point topological transition, which we proposed in our previous work. In this paper, we find a second type of singularity that manifests as a singular surface in our expanded parameter space. The shift of the singular surface will lead to the nodal line topological transition. We find the states on the singular surface possess extremely high robustness against certain randomness, based on which a topological wave filter is constructed.

Abstract:We demonstrate the possibility of using time-space crystalline structures to simulate eight-dimensional systems based on only two physical dimensions. A suitable choice of system parameters allows us to obtain a gapped energy spectrum, making topological effects become relevant. The nontrivial topology of the system is evinced by considering the adiabatic state pumping along temporal and spatial crystalline directions. Analysis of the system is facilitated by rewriting the system Hamiltonian in a tight-binding form, thereby putting space, time, and the additional synthetic dimensions on an equal footing.

Tensor Theory for Higher-Dimensional Chern Insulators with Large Chern Numbers

Abstract:Recent advances in topological artificial systems open the door to realizing topological states in dimensions higher than the usual three-dimensional space. Here we present a "tensor product" theory, which offers a method to construct Chern insulators with arbitrarily high dimensions and Chern numbers. Particularly, we show that the tensor product of a d(A)D Chern insulator < H-A((kappa A)),C-A > with a d(B)D Chern insulator < H-B((kappa B)),C-B > leads to a (d(A) + d(B))D Chern insulator < H-AB((kappa A star kappa B)),-2C(A)C(B)>, where in the brackets, H-(kappa) is the dD Hamiltonian with d even, C is the corresponding (d/2)th Chern number, and kappa labels the five nonchiral Altland-Zirnbauer symmetry classes A, AI, D, AII, and C. The four real classes AI, D, AII, and C form a Klein four-group under the multiplication "star," with class AI the identity and class A is the zero element. Our theory leads to novel higher-dimensional topological physics. (i) The construction can generate large higher-order Chern numbers, e.g., for some cases the resultant classification is 8Z. (ii) Fascinatingly, the boundary states feature flat nodal surfaces with nontrivial Chern charges. For the constructed (d(A) + d(B))D Chern insulator, a boundary perpendicular to a direction of H-A generically hosts vertical bar C-A vertical bar d(B)D nodal surfaces, each of which has topological charge +/- 2C(B). Under perturbations, each nodal surface bursts into stable unit nodal points with the total Chern charge conserved. Examples are given to demonstrate our theory, which can be experimentally realized in artificial systems such as acoustic crystals, electric-circuit arrays, ultracold atoms, or mechanical networks.
4D Spinless Topological Insulator in a Periodic Electric Circuit

Abstract:According to the mathematical classification of topological band structures, there exist a number of fascinating topological states in dimensions larger than three with exotic boundary phenomena and interesting topological responses. While these topological states are not accessible in condensed matter systems, recent works have shown that synthetic systems, such as photonic crystals or electric circuits, can realize higher-dimensional band structures. Here, we argue that, because of its symmetry properties, the 4D spinless topological insulator is particularly well suited for implementation in these synthetic systems. We explicitly construct a 2D electric circuit lattice, whose resonance frequency spectrum simulates the 4D spinless topological insulator. We perform detailed numerical calculations of the circuit lattice and show that the resonance frequency spectrum exhibits pairs of 3D Weyl boundary states, a hallmark of the nontrivial topology. These pairs of 3D Weyl states with the same chirality are protected by classical time-reversal symmetry that squares to +1, which is inherent in the proposed circuit lattice. We also discuss how the simulated 4D topological band structure can be observed in experiments.

Abstract:Traditional topological insulators often rely on band inversions driven by nonuniform hopping textures and spin-orbit coupling, as exemplified in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger and Kane-Mele models. We present a novel approach utilizing the spatial nature of sublattice symmetry to induce nontrivial topological insulating properties characterized by second-order corner states without band inversion. To substantiate our proposal, we design a photonic crystal with non primitive translational symmetry, demonstrating unique directional waveguide edge modes and localized corner modes.

Abstract:In this Perspective article we report on recent progress on studies of synthetic dimensions, mostly, but not only, based on the research realized around the Barcelona groups (ICFO, UAB), Donostia (DIPC), Poznań (UAM), Kraków (UJ), and Allahabad (HRI). The concept of synthetic dimensions works particularly well in atomic physics, quantum optics, and photonics, where the internal degrees of freedom (Zeeman sublevels of the ground state, metastable excited states, or motional states for atoms, and angular momentum states or transverse modes for photons) provide the synthetic space. We describe our attempts to design quantum simulators with synthetic dimensions, to mimic curved spaces, artificial gauge fields, lattice gauge theories, twistronics, quantum random walks, and more.

Topological States from Topological Crystals

Abstract:We present a scheme to explicitly construct and classify general topological states jointly protected by an onsite symmetry group and a spatial symmetry group. We show that all these symmetry-protected topological states can be adiabatically deformed into a special class of states we call topological crystals. A topological crystal in, for example, three dimensions is a real-space assembly of finite-sized pieces of topological states in one and two dimensions protected by the local symmetry group alone, arranged in a configuration invariant under the spatial group and glued together such that there is no open edge or end. As a demonstration of principle, we explicitly enumerate all inequivalent topological crystals for noninteracting time-reversal symmetric electronic insulators with spin-orbit coupling and any one of the 230 space groups. This enumeration gives topological crystalline insulators a full classification.

Abstract:To a significant extent, the rich physical properties of photonic crystals are determined by the underlying geometry, in which the composed symmetry operators and their combinations contribute to the unique topological invariant to characterize the topological phases. Particularly, the inter- and intra-coupling modulation in the two-dimensional (2D) Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model yields the topological phase transition, and exhibit first-order edge localized states and second-order corner localized corner states. In this work, we use the geometric anisotropy into the 2D square lattice composed of four rectangle blocks. We show a variety of topological phase transitions in designed nonsymmorphic photonic crystals (PCs) and these transitions shall be understood in terms of the Zak phase and Chern number in synthetic space, as well as the pseudospin-2 concept, combinationally. Furthermore, Zak phase winding in the periodic synthetic parameter space yields high-order Chern number and double interface states. Based on the extended Zak phase and pseudo-spin Hall effect, higher-order topological insulator is constructed in the PC system. The intriguing and abundant topological features are also sustained in the corresponding three-dimensional PC slab, which makes it a very interesting platform to control the flow of optical signals.
