Abstract:Based on the embedded atom method (EAM) and molecular dynamics (MD) method, the deformation properties of Cu nanowires with different single defects under dynamic compression have been studied. The mechanical behaviors of the perfect nanowire are first studied. The critical stress is found decreasing with the increase of the nanowire's length, which is well agreed with the modified Euler theory. We then consider the effects to the buckling phenomenon that brought in by different defects. It is found that obvious decrease of the critical stress is induced due to different defects, and the largest decrease is found in the nanowire with the surface vertical defect. Surface defects are observed exerting larger influence than internal defects. The buckling duration is shortened due to different defects except the nanowire with surface horizon defect, which is also found to possess the largest deflection. Different deflections are also observed for different defected nanowires. It is found that due to surface defects, only deflection in one direction is happened, but for internal defects, more complex deflection circumstances are observed.
Atomistic Numerical Investigation of Single-crystal Copper Nanowire with Surface Defects

Abstract:Based on the embedded atom method (EAM), a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is performed to study the single-crystal copper nanowire with surface defects through tension. The tension simulations for nanowire without defect are first carried out under different temperatures, strain rates and time steps and then surface defect effects for nanowire are investigated. The stress-strain curves obtained by the MD simulations of various strain rates show a rate below 1 X 109 s-1 will exert less effect on the yield strength and yield point, and the Young's modulus is independent of strain rate. A time step below 5 fs is recommend for the atomic model during the MD simulation. It is observed that high temperature leads to low Young's modulus, as well as the yield strength. The surface defects on nanowires are systematically studied in considering different defect orientations. It is found that the surface defect serves as a dislocation source, and the yield strength shows 34.20% decrease with 45 surface defect. Both yield strength and yield point are significantly influenced by the surface defects, except the Young's modulus.
Influence of Pre-Exsiting Surface Defects on the Vibrational Properties of Ag Nanowires

Abstract:Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations are performed to characterize the effects of pre-existing surface defects on the vibrational properties of Ag nanowires. It is found that the first order natural frequency of the nanowire appears insensitive to different surface defects, indicating a defect insensitivity property of the nanowire's Young's modulus. In the meanwhile, an increase of the quality (Q)-factor is observed due to the presence of defects. Particular, a beat phenomenon is observed for the nanowire with the presence of a surface edge defect, which is driven by a single actuation. It is concluded that different surface defects could act as an effective mean to tune the vibrational properties of nanowires. This study sheds lights on the better understanding of nanowire's mechanical performance when surface defects are presented, which would benefit the development of nanowire-based devices.
Numerical Exploration of Plastic Deformation Mechanisms of Copper Nanowires with Surface Defects

Abstract:Based on the molecular dynamics simulation, plastic deformation mechanisms associated with the zigzag stress curves in perfect and surface defected copper nanowires under uniaxial tension are studied. In our previous study, it has found that the surface defect exerts larger influence than the centro-plane defect, and the 45° surface defect appears as the most influential surface defect. Hence, in this paper, the nanowire with a 45° surface defect is chosen to investigate the defect’s effect to the plastic deformation mechanism of nanowires. We find that during the plastic deformation of both perfect and defected nanowires, decrease regions of the stress curve are accompanied with stacking faults generation and migration activities, but during stress increase, the structure of the nanowire appears almost unchanged. We also observe that surface defects have obvious influence on the nanowire’s plastic deformation mechanisms. In particular, only two sets of slip planes are found to be active and twins are also observed in the defected nanowire.

Abstract:By employing the in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique, tensile deformation behaviors of a silver nanowire (NW) with a single twin structure were studied. Our observations revealed that the initial stage of plastic deformation was dominated by surface-mediated partial dislocation activities. Strikingly, the void formation and growth were shown to govern the later stage of plasticity, leading to the ductile type of fracture in NWs. Possible void nucleation and growth mechanisms were discussed. Additionally, TEM images show the transformation from bi-crystal to polycrystal in the fracture area, likely due to the void activity. Our results have implications in the assembly of functional structures applying nano-building blocks.
In Situ TEM Study on the Nanomechanical Behaviors of Metallic Nanowires

Abstract:In this dissertation, the relationships between structure-mechanical properties-deformation mechanisms in face-centered cubic (FCC) and body-centered cubic (BCC) metallic nanowires have been studied using in situ TEM nanomechanical testing. It is well known that smaller is stronger and the widely-observed size effect is believed to arise from dislocation interactions inside nanocrystals. However, the interaction mechanisms in small-volume nanocrystals remain unexplored. Here, it was found that surface-nucleated dislocations can strongly interact inside the confined volume of Au nanowires, which led to a new type of dislocation-originated stacking fault tetrahedra (SFT), at variance to the widely-believed vacancy-originated SFT. The atomic-scale processes of nucleation, migration and annihilation of dislocation-originated SFT were revealed, shedding new light onto the strain hardening and size effect in small-volume materials. Although nanoscale twinning is an effective mean to enhance the strength of metals, twin-size effect on the deformation and failure of nanotwinned metals remains largely unexplored, especially at the minimum twin size. Here, a new type of size effect in nanotwinned Au nanowires is presented. As twin size reaches the angstrom-scale, Au nanowires exhibit a remarkable ductile-to-brittle transition that is governed by the heterogeneous-to-homogeneous dislocation nucleation transition. Quantitative measurements show that approaching such a nanotwin size limit gives rise to the ultra-high strength in Au nanowires, close to the ideal strength limit of perfect Au. Twinning is a fundamental deformation mode that competes against dislocation slip in crystals. At the nanoscale, higher stresses are required for plastic deformation than that in bulk, which favors twinning over dislocation slip. Indeed, deformation twinning has been well-documented in FCC nanocrystals. However, it remains unexplored in BCC nanostructures. Here, it shows that twinning is the dominant deformation mode in BCC-tungsten nanocrystals. A competition between twinning and dislocation slip occurs when changing the loading orientations, attributed to the defect growth controlled plasticity in BCC nanocrystals. Several important commonalities and differences in FCC and BCC nanocrystals deforming at nanoscale are further proposed. The results from this dissertation advance fundamental understanding of plastic deformation in a broad class of metals and alloys, and are of technological importance for degradation control and future design of ultra-strength nanomaterials.
In Situ Observation of High Bending Strain Recoverability in Au Nanowires

Abstract:Metallic nanowires (NW) usually exhibit unique physical, mechanical, and chemical properties compared to their bulk counterparts. Despite extensive research on their mechanical behavior, the atomic-scale deformation mechanisms of metallic nanowires remain incompletely understood. In this study, we investigate the deformation behavior of Au nanowires embedded with a longitudinal twin boundary (TB) under different loading rates using in situ nanomechanical testing integrated with atomistic simulations. The Au nanowires exhibit a recoverable bending strain of up to 27.5% with the presence of TBs. At low loading rates, the recoverable bending is attributed to the motion of stacking faults (SFs) and their interactions with TBs. At higher loading rates, the formation of high-angle grain boundaries and their reversible migration become dominant in Au nanowires. These findings enhance our understanding of the bending behavior of metallic nanowires, which could inspire the design of nanodevices with improved fatigue resistance and a large recoverable strain capacity.

Abstract:Optimal design of microelectromechanical devices requires tuning both the size and length scales of their nanocomponents, however the length effect on mechanical behavior of small crystals remains poorly understood. Here, in situ nanomechanical testing reveals a remarkable length-dependent mechanical property in silver nanowires, where both the strength and ductility display a net increase with the length reduction. Quantitative analysis shows that reduction of crystal size and crystal length could induce a completely-opposite strengthening in metallic nanowires due to the distinct operating mechanisms. These findings provide new insights into the size-dependent deformation in metallic nanowires, holding important implications for designing durable nanostructures/nanodevices.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been carried out to investigate the defect's effect on the mechanical properties of single-crystal copper nanowire with different surface defects, under torsion deformation. The torsional rigidity is found insensitive to the surface defects and the critical angle appears an obvious decrease due to the surface defects, the largest decrease is found for the nanowire with surface horizon defect. The deformation mechanism appears different degrees of influence due to surface defects. The surface defects play a role of dislocation sources. Comparing with single intrinsic stacking faults formation for the perfect nanowire, much affluent deformation processes have been activated because of surface defects, for instance, we find the twins formation for the nanowire with a surface 45 degrees defect.
Crystalline liquid and rubber-like behavior in Cu nanowires

Abstract:Via in situ TEM tensile tests on single crystalline copper nanowires with an advanced tensile device, we report here a crystalline-liquid-rubber-like (CRYS-LIQUE-R) behavior in fracturing crystalline metallic nanowires. A retractable strain of the fractured crystalline Cu nanowires can approach over 35%. This astonishing CRYS-LIQUE-R behavior of the fracturing highly strained single crystalline Cu nanowires originates from an instant release of the stored ultralarge elastic energy in the crystalline nanowires. The release of the ultralarge elastic energy was estimated to generate a huge reverse stress as high as ~10 GPa. The effective diffusion coefficient (D(eff)) increased sharply due to the consequent pressure gradient. In addition, due to the release of ultrahigh elastic energy, the estimated concomitant temperature increase was estimated as high as 0.6 Tm (Tm is the melting point of nanocrystalline Cu) on the fractured tip of the nanowires. These factors greatly enhanced the atomic diffusion process. Molecular dynamic simulations revealed that the very high reverse stress triggered dislocation nucleation and exhaustion.
Surface Energy Driven Liquid-Drop-Like Pseudoelastic Behaviors and in Situ Atomistic Mechanisms of Small-Sized Face-Centered-Cubic Metals.

Abstract:The elastic strain of conventional metals is usually below ∼1%. As the metals' sizes decrease to approximate a few nanometers, their elastic strains can approach ∼8%, and they usually exhibit pseudoelastic strain that can be as large as ∼35%. Previous studies suggested that the pseudoelastic behaviors of nanocrystals were attributed to distinctive mechanisms, including the release of stored elastic energies, the temperature-enhanced surface diffusion, etc. However, the atomistic mechanisms remain elusive. In this study, through large numbers of in situ atomic-scale tensile-fracture experiments, we report liquid-drop-like pseudoelastic behaviors of face-centered-cubic fractured single-crystalline nanowires with diameters varying from 0.5 to 2.2 nm. The ultralarge liquid-drop-like pseudoelastic strain ranged from 31.4% to 81.0% after the nanowire fracture was observed. The in situ atomic-scale investigations revealed that the atomistic mechanisms resulted from surface energy driven plastic deformation including surface diffusion mixed with shear plastic deformation as well as the release of true elastic energy. As the nanowires' diameters decrease below a critical value, the surface pressure can approach the ideal strength of metals. This ultralarge surface pressure drives atoms to diffuse mixed with dislocation nucleation/propagation, which ultimately leads to the fractured nanowires exhibiting liquid-drop-like pseudoelastic phenomena.
Atomistic Treatment of Periodic Gold Nanowire Array Nanofasteners under Shear Loading

Abstract:Comprehensive molecular dynamics simulations are conducted to unravel the mechanics and mechanisms associated with the strength and fracture behavior of a highly ordered gold nanowire (Au-NW) array of a pair of nanofasteners (nanoconnectors) under externally applied shear strain. Large-scale atomic/molecular massively parallel simulator (LAMMPS and embedded atom method were adopted to model the atomic interactions of a number of neighboring nanofasteners. This was affected via the use of a periodic simulation box around a pair of highly ordered nanotube arrays to minimize the cost of the computations. Energy minimization using a conjugate gradient algorithm was first performed and followed by atomic relaxation to achieve an equilibrated configuration under the canonical ensemble of constant temperature and volume. The relaxed equilibrated configuration of the nanofastener was then subjected to an externally applied shear strain [Formula: see text] at a rate of [Formula: see text] per nanosecond under the canonical ensemble. Our results reveal the importance of the morphology and the overlap depth of the mating nanowire arrays upon the mechanical and fracture behavior of the nanofastener under shear loading. Our work also disclosed the phenomenon of multiple contacts of some displaced nanowires with their neighbors even after their fracture leading to multiple cold-welds with added redundancy to the nanofastener. Finally, in this research, we identified the locations of dislocation emissions and the resulting fracture processes that govern the mechanical integrity and ultimately the functionality of the Au-NW connector. The proposed highly ordered alignment, as conceived numerically herein, can yield a peak stress two to three times higher than that corresponding to a random alignment reported in a previous study. The Au-NW connector also exhibited resistance to fracture, even in cases where small overlap depth is considered in joint bonding. The nanoconnector was also tested at high temperatures (up to 450 K). Our results show that the rising temperature only leads to a minor reduction in the load transmitted by the nanoconnector.
The Deformation Mechanism in Cold-Welded Gold Nanowires Due to Dislocation Emission

Abstract:Though dislocation emission was known to be critical in the deformation and fracture process of metallic nanowires, the corresponding mechanism in cold-welded metallic nanowires has never been clarified. In order to understand the dislocation-mediated deformation mechanism in cold-welded nanowires, large-scale atomistic simulations are employed in this work. During dislocation emission, the formation and motion of only unclosed shear loops are observed inside nanowires. We prove from a theoretical viewpoint that unclosed shear dislocation loops can induce material transport and hence plastically deform cold-welded nanowires. For a better clarification, through running simulation replicates, we propose a novel approach to single out the displacement field solely due to shear loop emission. Regarding the pattern of material transport, our simulated atom arrangement near the dislocation core is found consistent with that captured by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) of a stressed Au nanocrystal. Our analysis clarifies that the emission of unclosed shear loop plays a crucial role in not only the tensile deformation, but also the fracture process of cold-welded nanowires. It should be regarded as a general mechanism that shear loop emission can induce surface deformation and redistribute mass in the process of plasticity.
Enhanced Tensile Ductility of Tungsten Microwires Via High-Density Dislocations and Reduced Grain Boundaries

Abstract:Despite being strong with many outstanding physical properties,tungsten is inherently brittle at room temperature,restricting its structural and functional applications at small scales.Here,a facile strategy has been adopted,to introduce high-density dislocations while reducing grain boundaries,through elec-tron backscatter diffraction (EBSD)-guided microfabrication of cold-drawn bulk tungsten wires.The de-signed tungsten microwire attains an ultralarge uniform tensile elongation of ～10.6％,while retains a high yield strength of ～2.4 GPa.in situ TEM tensile testing reveals that the large uniform elongation of tung-sten microwires originates from the motion of pre-existing high-density dislocations,while the subse-quent ductile fracture is attributed to crack-tip plasticity and the inhibition of grain boundary cracking.This work demonstrates the application potential of tungsten microcomponents with superior ductility and workability for micro/nanoscale mechanical,electronic,and energy systems.

Abstract:The fatigue behavior of ceramic ZnO nanowires (NWs) has been investigated under resonance cyclic loading conditions using in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). After mechanical deformation at the resonance frequency at a vibration angle of 5.2 degrees for 35 billion cycles, no failure or any defect generations have been found. We believe that the dislocation-free nature of NWs and the large surface-to-volume ratio contribute to the NWs' ability to undergo deformation without fatigue or fracture, proving their durability and toughness for nanogenerators and nanopiezotronics.
True Origin of the Size Effect in Cold-Welded Metallic Nanocrystals

Abstract:A drastic size effect in cold-welded metallic nanowire for surface fasteners was observed in our previous experiment. In this work, a large-scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and a finite element (FE) simulation coupled with the nonsingular dislocation theory are combined to probe the true origin of this drastic size effect. Very large diameter (up to 200 nm) is involved in the direct MD simulation, leaving no gap between the simulation and the experiment. It was once believed that the drastic size effect comes from the Van der Waals (vdW) force transmitted through the bonding interface, which does give a mathematically agreeable scaling law. However, based on present simulations, new understanding is established-the drastic size effect is linked to dislocation emission, rather than vdW force. Compared with a single nanowire, the externally induced stress surges near the bonding corner of cold-welded nanocrystals due to the enormous stress concentration. The dislocation emission is hence triggered. It is also revealed that, overwhelmingly, dislocation emission should be energetically favorable in cold-welded nanocrystals. Additionally, MD simulations with polycrystalline nanocrystals reveal that both the random orientation effect and the grain boundary effect are secondary to the enormous stress concentration effect. Under such less ideal situation, dislocation emission still determines the maximum stress.
Strong Hall-Petch Type Behavior in the Elastic Strain Limit of Nanotwinned Gold Nanowires

Abstract:Pushing the limits of elastic deformation in nanowires subjected to stress is important for the design and performance of nanoscale devices from elastic strain engineering. Particularly, introducing nanoscale twins has proved effective in rising the tensile strength of metals. However, attaining ideal elastic strains in nanotwinned materials remains challenging, because nonuniform twin sizes locally affect the yielding behavior. Here, using in situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy tensile testing of nanotwinned [111]-oriented gold nanowires, we report direct lattice-strain measurements that demonstrate a strong Hall-Petch type relationship in the elastic strain limit up to 5.3%, or near the ideal theoretical limit, as the twin size is decreased below 3 nm. It is found that the largest twin in nanowires with irregular twin sizes controls the slip nucleation and yielding processes in pure tension, which is in agreement with earlier atomistic simulations. Continuous hardening behavior without loss of strength or softening is observed in nanotwinned single-crystalline gold nanowires, which differs from the behaviors of bulk nanocrystalline and nanotwinned-nanocrystalline metals. These findings are of practical value for the use of nanotwinned metallic and semiconductor nanowires in strain-engineered functional microdevices.
Self-energy of elliptical dislocation loops in anisotropic crystals and its application for defect-free core/shell nanowires

Abstract:In this work we investigate the self-energy of elliptical dislocation loops in anisotropic crystals and determine the functional dependencies on loop circumference, shape, and dislocation core radius. Systematic numerical calculations using the anisotropic point force Green’s function method are carried out with the goal of developing an analytical expression for the self-energy associated with these loops. The resulting formula is shown to accurately predict the self-energies for elliptical loops in anisotropic crystals, as well as the self-energies for simple loop configurations in isotropic crystals, for which analytical expressions exist. We apply this expression to predict the critical shell thickness corresponding to defect-free core/shell nanowires (NW) and further for the first time consider the effect of image energy due to the finite size of NW in anisotropic media using the boundary element method. Consequently, self-energy in NWs is corrected by an energy factor. Moreover, we discuss the dependence of the critical shell thickness on growth direction, with 〈110〉 NW having the largest, 〈111〉 NW the next largest, and 〈112〉 NW the finest.
Recoverable Plasticity in Penta-Twinned Metallic Nanowires Governed by Dislocation Nucleation and Retraction

Abstract:There has been relatively little study on time-dependent mechanical properties of nanowires, in spite of their importance for the design, fabrication and operation of nanoscale devices. Here we report a dislocation-mediated, time-dependent and fully reversible plastic behaviour in penta-twinned silver nanowires. In situ tensile experiments inside scanning and transmission electron microscopes show that penta-twinned silver nanowires undergo stress relaxation on loading and complete plastic strain recovery on unloading, while the same experiments on single-crystalline silver nanowires do not exhibit such a behaviour. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the observed behaviour in penta-twinned nanowires originates from the surface nucleation, propagation and retraction of partial dislocations. More specifically, vacancies reduce dislocation nucleation barrier, facilitating stress relaxation, while the twin boundaries and their intrinsic stress field promote retraction of partial dislocations, resulting in full strain recovery.

While mechanical failure is an outcome of deformation to be avoided, elastic deformation can have a pronounced and positive impact on materials properties. The effect of elastic deformation becomes even more evident at low dimensions, because at the micro/nanoscale, materials and structures can usually sustain exceptionally high elastic strains before failure. The purpose of this overview is to present a summary of recent progress on elastically strained nanowires and atomic sheets. First, we will demonstrate that nanowires can sustain large elastic strains, and their bending modulus increases exponentially as the nanowire diameter decreases. Second, the elastic strain has been found to significantly modify the electronic structure of semiconductor nano/microwires to induce a metal–insulator transition at room temperature and to efficiently transform the mechanical energy into electricity. These recent developments point to potential future applications based on the elastic strain engineering of nanoscale materials.
