Abstract:We give a lattice-theoretic characterization for a manifold of $\mathrm{OG}10$ type to be birational to some moduli space of (twisted) sheaves on a K3 surface. We apply it to the Li-Pertusi-Zhao variety of $\mathrm{OG}10$ type associated to any smooth cubic fourfold. Moreover we determine when a birational transformation is induced by an automorphism of the K3 surface and we use this to classify all induced birational symplectic involutions.

Abstract:It is known that the moduli space of plane quartic curves is birational to an arithmetic quotient of a 6-dimensional complex ball. In this paper, we shall show that there exists a 15-dimensional space of meromorphic automorphic forms on the complex ball which gives a birational embedding of the moduli space of plane quartics with level 2 structure into 14-dimensional projective space. This map coincides with the one given by Coble by using Gopel invariants.

Abstract:We characterize the birational geometry of some hyperkähler fourfolds of Picard rank $3$ obtained as the Fano varieties of lines on cubic fourfolds containing pairs of cubic scrolls. In each of the two cases considered, we provide a census of the birational models, relating each model to familiar geometric constructions. We also provide structural results about the birational automorphism groups, giving generators in both cases and a full set of relations in one case. Finally, as a byproduct of our analysis, we obtain non-isomorphic cubic fourfolds whose Fano varieties of lines are birationally equivalent.

Compactifications of the Eisenstein ancestral Deligne-Mostow variety

Abstract:All arithmetic non-compact ball quotients by Deligne-Mostow's unitary monodromy group arise as sub-ball quotients of either of two spaces called ancestral cases, corresponding to Gaussian or Eisenstein Hermitian forms respectively. In our previous paper, we investigated the compactifications of the Gaussian Deligne-Mostow variety. Here we work on the remaining case, namely the ring of Eisenstein integers, which is related to the moduli space of unordered 12 points on $\mathbb P^1$. In particular, we show that Kirwan's partial resolution of the moduli space is not a semi-toroidal compactification and Deligne-Mostow's period map does not lift to the unique toroidal compactification. We give two interpretations of these phenomena in terms of the log minimal model program and automorphic forms. As an application, we prove that the above two compactifications are not (stacky) derived equivalent, as the $DK$-conjecture predicts. Furthermore, we construct an automorphic form on the moduli space of non-hyperelliptic curves of genus 4, which is isogenous to the Eisenstein Deligne-Mostow variety, giving another intrinsic proof, independent of lattice embeddings, of a result by Casalaina-Martin, Jensen and Laza.

Abstract:We develop a new method of constructing non-arithmetic lattices in the projective orthogonal group $\text{PO}(n,1)$ for every integer $n$ larger than one. The technique is to consider anti-holomorphic involutions on a complex arithmetic ball quotient, glue their fixed loci along geodesic subspaces, and show that the resulting metric space carries canonically the structure of a complete real hyperbolic orbifold. The volume of various of these non-arithmetic orbifolds can be explicitly calculated.

Abstract:Suppose $(X,\Omega,g)$ is a compact Spin(7)-manifold, e.g. a Riemannian 8-manifold with holonomy Spin(7), or a Calabi-Yau 4-fold. Let $G$ be U$(m)$ or SU$(m)$, and $P\to X$ be a principal $G$-bundle. We show that the infinite-dimensional moduli space ${\mathcal B}_P$ of all connections on $P$ modulo gauge is orientable, in a certain sense. We deduce that the moduli space ${\mathcal M}_P^{Spin(7)}\subset{\mathcal B}_P$ of irreducible Spin(7)-instanton connections on $P$ modulo gauge, as a manifold or derived manifold, is orientable. This improves theorems of Cao and Leung <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1502.01141" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1502.01141">arXiv:1502.01141</a> and Muñoz and Shahbazi <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1707.02998" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1707.02998">arXiv:1707.02998</a>. If $X$ is a Calabi-Yau 4-fold, the derived moduli stack $\boldsymbol{\mathscr M}$ of (complexes of) coherent sheaves on $X$ is a $-2$-shifted symplectic derived stack $(\boldsymbol{\mathcal M},\omega)$ by Pantev-Toën-Vaquié-Vezzosi <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1111.3209" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1111.3209">arXiv:1111.3209</a>, and so has a notion of orientation by Borisov-Joyce <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1504.00690" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1504.00690">arXiv:1504.00690</a>. We prove that $(\boldsymbol{\mathscr M},\omega)$ is orientable, by relating algebro-geometric orientations on $(\boldsymbol{\mathscr M},\omega)$ to differential-geometric orientations on ${\mathcal B}_P$ for U$(m)$-bundles $P\to X$, and using orientability of ${\mathcal B}_P$. This has applications to the programme of defining Donaldson-Thomas type invariants counting moduli spaces of (semi)stable coherent sheaves on a Calabi-Yau 4-fold, as in Donaldson and Thomas 1998, Cao and Leung <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1407.7659" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1407.7659">arXiv:1407.7659</a>, and Borisov and Joyce <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1504.00690" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1504.00690">arXiv:1504.00690</a>. The $W(E_6)$-invariant birational geometry of the moduli space of marked cubic surfaces

Abstract:The moduli space $Y = Y(E_6)$ of marked cubic surfaces is one of the most classical moduli spaces in algebraic geometry, dating back to the nineteenth century work of Cayley and Salmon. Modern interest in $Y$ was restored in the 1980s by Naruki's explicit construction of a $W(E_6)$-equivariant smooth projective compactification $\overline{Y}$ of $Y$, and in the 2000s by Hacking, Keel, and Tevelev's construction of the KSBA stable pair compactification $\widetilde{Y}$ of $Y$ as a natural sequence of blowups of $\overline{Y}$. We describe generators for the cones of $W(E_6)$-invariant effective divisors and curves of both $\overline{Y}$ and $\widetilde{Y}$. For Naruki's compactification $\overline{Y}$, we further obtain a complete stable base locus decomposition of the $W(E_6)$-invariant effective cone, and as a consequence find several new $W(E_6)$-equivariant birational models of $\overline{Y}$. Furthermore, we fully describe the log minimal model program for the KSBA compactification $\widetilde{Y}$, with respect to the divisor $K_{\widetilde{Y}} + cB + dE$, where $B$ is the boundary and $E$ is the sum of the divisors parameterizing marked cubic surfaces with Eckardt points.

Abstract:This paper aims to study the birational geometry of log Calabi-Yau pairs$(\mathbb{P}^3, D)$ of coregularity 2, where in this case $D$ is an irreducible normal quartic surface with canonical singularities. We completely classify which toric weighted blowups of a point will initiate a volume preserving Sarkisov link starting with this pair. Depending on the type of singularity, our results point out that some of these weights do not work generically for a general member of the corresponding coarse moduli space of quartics.

Bordism categories and orientations of gauge theory moduli spaces

Abstract:This is the second paper of a series that develops a bordism-theoretic point of view on orientations in enumerative geometry. The first paper is <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2312.06818" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2312.06818">arXiv:2312.06818</a>. This paper focuses on those applications to gauge theory that can be established purely using formal arguments and calculations from algebraic topology. We prove that the orientability of moduli spaces of connections in gauge theory for all principal $G$-bundles $P\to X$ over compact spin $n$-manifolds at once is equivalent to the vanishing of a certain morphism $\Omega_n^{\rm Spin}(\mathcal L BG)\to{\mathbb Z}_2$ on the $n$-dimensional spin bordism group of the free loop space of the classifying space of $G,$ and we give a complete list of all compact, connected Lie groups $G$ for which this holds. Moreover, we apply bordism techniques to prove that mod-$8$ Floer gradings exist for moduli spaces of $G_2$-instantons for all principal SU(2)-bundles. We also prove that there are canonical orientations for all principal U$(m)$-bundles $P\to X$ over compact spin $8$-manifolds satisfying $c_2(P)-c_1(P)^2=0.$ The proof is based on an interesting relationship to principal $E_8$-bundles. These canonical orientations play an important role in many conjectures about Donaldson-Thomas type invariants on Calabi-Yau $4$-folds, and resolve an apparent paradox in these conjectures.

Toroidal analogues of the Grothendieck-Springer map

Abstract:We study moduli spaces of objects in the derived category of noncommutative ruled surfaces over orbifold curves to find equivariant deformations of moduli spaces of framed sheaves on equivariant elliptic surfaces. These derived categories are a common generalization of the category of modules of the preprojective algebra and of the category of twisted D-modules over a curve. We show that the birational geometry of the Hilbert scheme of points on an equivariant elliptic surface is controlled by an elliptic root system, and conjecture in general and prove in special cases that moduli spaces of objects in these derived categories provides a deformation of birational models for the Hilbert scheme. We also study the applications of this deformation to the geometric representation theory of the central fiber, specifically to produce geometric correspondences giving rise to Lie algebra actions on the equivariant cohomology of the central fiber and give formulas for the action of the Namikawa-Markman Weyl group of monodromy reflections in terms of this Lie algebra.

Birational geometry of smooth families of varieties admitting good minimal models

Abstract:In this paper we study families of projective manifolds with good minimal models. After constructing a suitable moduli functor for polarized varieties with canonical singularities, we show that, if not birationally isotrivial, the base spaces of such families support subsheaves of log-pluridifferentials with positive Kodaira dimension. Consequently we prove that, over special base schemes, families of this type can only be birationally isotrivial and, as a result, confirm a conjecture of Kebekus and Kovács.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group of type $F_{4}$, $E_{6}$, $E_{7}$ or $E_{8}$, and let $\mathfrak{g}$ be its Lie algebra. The adjoint variety $X_{ad} \subseteq \mathbb{P} \mathfrak{g}$ is defined as the unique closed orbit of the adjoint action of $G$ on $\mathbb{P}\mathfrak{g}$. $X_{ad}$ is a Fano contact manifold covered by lines in $\mathbb{P} \mathfrak{g}$. The subadjoint variety $S \subseteq \mathbb{P} W$ is denoted by the variety of lines on $X_{ad}$ through a fixed point $x$, where $W \subseteq T_{x}X$ is taken as the contact hyperplane. It follows from a result in representation theory of Vinberg that the GIT quotient space of codimension two linear sections of $S$ is isomorphic to the weighted projective space $\mathbb{P}(1,3,4,6)$. In this note, we investigate the problem of finding a geometric interpretation of the above isomorphism. As a main result, for each $\mathfrak{g}$ of the above type, we construct a natural open embedding of the GIT quotient space of nonsingular codimension two linear sections of $S$ into $\mathbb{P}(1,3,4,6)$ whose complement is a fixed hypersurface of degree 12. The key ingredient of our construction is to apply a correspondence of Bahargava and Ho which relates the above moduli problem to a moduli problem on curves of genus one.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected and simply-connected semisimple group over $\mathbf{C}$, let $G_c$ be a maximal compact subgroup of $G(\mathbf{C})$, and let $T$ be a maximal torus. The derived geometric Satake equivalence of Bezrukavnikov-Finkelberg localizes to an equivalence between a full subcategory of $\mathrm{Loc}_{G_c}(\Omega G_c; \mathbf{C})$ and $\mathrm{QCoh}(\check{\mathfrak{g}}^{\mathrm{reg}}[2]/\check{G})$, which can be thought of as a version of the geometric Satake equivalence "over the regular locus". In this article, we study the story when $\mathrm{Loc}_{T_c}(\Omega G_c; \mathbf{C})$ is replaced by the $\infty$-category of $T$-equivariant local systems of $A$-modules over $\mathrm{Gr}_G(\mathbf{C})$, where $A$ is a complex-oriented even-periodic $\mathbf{E}_\infty$-ring equipped with an oriented group scheme $\mathbf{G}$. We show that upon rationalization, $\mathrm{Loc}_{T_c}(\Omega G_c; A)$, which was studied variously by Arkhipov-Bezrukavnikov-Ginzburg and Yun-Zhu when $A = \mathbf{C}[\beta^{\pm 1}]$, can be described in terms of the spectral geometry of various Langlands-dual stacks associated to $A$ and $\mathbf{G}$. For example, this implies that if $A$ is an elliptic cohomology theory with elliptic curve $E$, then $\mathrm{Loc}_{T_c}(\Omega G_c; A) \otimes \mathbf{Q}$ can be described via the moduli stack of $\check{B}$-bundles of degree $0$ on $E^\vee$.

On the Donaldson-Scaduto conjecture

Abstract:Motivated by $G_2$-manifolds with coassociative fibrations in the adiabatic limit, Donaldson and Scaduto conjectured the existence of associative submanifolds homeomorphic to a three-holed $3$-sphere with three asymptotically cylindrical ends in the $G_2$-manifold $X \times \mathbb{R}^3$, or equivalently similar special Lagrangians in the Calabi-Yau 3-fold $X \times \mathbb{C}$, where $X$ is an $A_2$-type ALE hyperkähler 4-manifold. We prove this conjecture by solving a real Monge-Ampère equation with a singular right-hand side, which produces a potentially singular special Lagrangian. Then, we prove the smoothness and asymptotic properties for the special Lagrangian using inputs from geometric measure theory. The method produces many other asymptotically cylindrical $U(1)$-invariant special Lagrangians in $X\times \mathbb{C}$, where $X$ arises from the Gibbons-Hawking construction.

Abstract:We prove that the examples by Smith and McMullen-Taubes provide infinitely many counterexamples to one direction of Donaldson's 4-6 question and the closely related Stabilising Conjecture. These are the first known counterexamples. In the other direction, we show that the Gromov-Witten invariants of two simply-connected closed symplectic $4$-manifolds, whose products with $(S^2,\omega_{\text{std}})$ are deformation equivalent, agree. In particular, when $b_2^+ \geq 2$, these $4$-manifolds have the same Seiberg-Witten invariants. Furthermore, one can replace $(S^2,\omega_{\text{std}})$ by $(S^2,\omega_{\text{std}})^k$ for any $k \geq 1$ in both results.

Oort's conjecture and automorphisms of supersingular curves of genus four

Abstract:We show that every component of the locus of smooth supersingular curves of genus $4$ in characteristic $p>2$ has a trivial generic automorphism group. As a result, we prove Oort's conjecture about automorphism groups of supersingular abelian fourfolds for $p>2$. Our main idea consists of estimating dimensions of the loci of smooth supersingular curves that admit an automorphism of prime order by considering possible choices of the corresponding quotient curves. This reasoning also results in a new proof of Oort's conjecture for $g = 3$ and $p>2$, previously proved by Karemaker, Yuboko, and Yu.

Abstract:We construct a smooth projective algebraic variety $X_{\Psi}$ that compactifies an equivariant vector subbundle of the cotangent bundle of the flag variety of $\mathop{GL} ( n )$ (corresponding to a root ideal $\Psi$). The variety $X_\Psi$ carries natural class of line bundles whose spaces of global sections realize the Catalan functions defined in Chen-Haiman [thesis, UCBerkeley] and studied in Blasiak-Morse-Pun-Summers [J. Amer. Math. Soc. (2019), Invent. Math. (2024)]. We prove the vanishing conjectures of Chen-Haiman and (the tame cases of these of) Blasiak-Morse-Pun, as well as the monotonicity conjectures of Shimozono-Weyman [Electronic J. Combin. (2000)] using the geometry of $X_\Psi$.
