Abstract:This work presents the separation performance of graphene-ZIF8 (G-Z) composite material as stationary phase for capillary gas chromatography (GC). The G-Z stationary phase achieved high column efficiency of 5000 plates/m determined by n-dodecane (k = 1.22) at 120 degrees C and showed weakly polar nature. Importantly, it exhibited high selectivity and resolving capability for branched alkane isomers and aromatic positional isomers, showing clear advantages over the reported neat graphene and ZIF8. In addition, it attained high resolution for geometric cis-/trans-isomers. The G-Z column exhibited good column thermal stability up to 300 degrees C and column repeatability with RSD values of retention times in the range of 0.01-0.19% for intra-day, 0.05-0.88% for inter-day and 0.66-5.6% for between-column, respectively, Moreover, the G-Z column was employed for the determination of minor impurity isomers in real reagent samples, which demonstrates its promising potential in GC applications. Electrochromatographic Performance of Graphene and Graphene Oxide Modified Silica Particles Packed Capillary Columns

Abstract:Graphene oxide functionalized silica microspheres (GO@SiO2) were synthesized based on condensation reaction between amino from aminosilica particles and carboxyl groups from GO. Reduction of GO@SiO2 with hydrazinium hydroxide generated graphene modified silica particles (G@SiO2). GO@SiO2 and G@SiO2 packed capillary columns for capillary electrochromatography were thereafter fabricated by pressure slurry packing with single‐particle frits. GO of 0.3 mg/mL in dispersion solution for GO@SiO2 synthesis was considered as a compromise between retaining and column efficiency whereas GO@SiO2 of 20 mg/mL in slurries for column packing was chosen for a homogenous and tight bed. Optimum mobile phases were acquired considering both electroosmotic flow and resolution at an applied voltage of −6 kV as the following: acetonitrile/phosphate buffer (10 mM, pH 7.0), 75:25 (v/v) for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and 50:50 (v/v) for aromatic compounds. A comparison was made between electrochromatographic performances for three PAHs (naphthalene, fluorene and phenanthrene) and three aromatic compounds of various polarities (toluene, aniline and phenol) on bare aminosilica, GO@SiO2 and G@SiO2 packed columns, which proved the contribution of alone or combinational actions of solvophobic effect and π‐π electron stacking as well as hydrogen bonds to retaining behaviors by GO@SiO2 and G@SiO2. Well over‐run, over‐day and over‐column precisions (retention time: 0.3–1.4, 1.1–3.8 and 2.8–5.2%, respectively; peak area: 2.6–6.5, 4.8–8.3 and 6.5–12.6%, respectively) of GO@SiO2 packed columns were a powerful proof for good reproducibility. Analytical characteristics of GO@SiO2 packed capillary columns in CEC analysis of fresh water were evaluated with respect to linearity (R2 = 0.9961–0.9989) over the range 0.1 to 100 mg/L and detection limits of 9.5 for naphthalene, 12.6 for fluorene and 16.2 μg/L for phenanthrene. Further application to fresh water increased the visibility of the proposed material, where good spike recoveries in the range 89–96% were offered.
Graphene Oxide Decorated Monolithic Column As Stationary Phase for Capillary Electrochromatography

Abstract:In this work, GO bonded monolith (pAS-GO@PS-DVB) as the stationary phase for capillary electrochromatography was fabricated, which was achieved by a simple one-step in-situ copolymerization of styrene and vinylized GO in the presence of divinylbenzene as a cross-linker. GO functionalization was primarily completed using p-aminostyrene based on condensation reaction between amino and carboxyl groups. The characterization by infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy proved the covalent bonding of GO on the monolith. The average pore diameter via Barrett-Joyner-Halenda, specific surface area and pore volume via Brunauer-Emmett-Teller equation by nitrogen adsorption/desorption were determined to be 112.4 nm, 485.8 m(2) g(-1) and 1.4 cm(3) g(-1), respectively. The pAS-GO@PS-DVB monolithic column gave effective separation for a wide range of aromatic compounds, which was based on hydrogen bonding and pi-pi interactions of GO with polar and/or non-polar organic compounds. The reproducibility in terms of the precisions of migration time, peak height and peak area was estimated below 6% using thiourea and other aromatic compounds. Furthermore, the differences of migration time, peak height and peak area between the first-week analysis and the forth-week analysis were less than 19%, indicating good stability of the proposed monolithic column in one month. The applicability of the pAS-GO@PS-DVB monolith was also demonstrated by baseline separation of three phenols and three anilines. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Performance of permethyl pillar[5]arene stationary phase for high-resolution gas chromatography

Abstract:This work presents the investigation of permethyl pillar[5]arene (MP5) as stationary phase for capillary gas chromatographic (GC) separations. The MP5 capillary column fabricated by the sol-gel coating method exhibited weak polarity and high column efficiency over 4200 plates/m for n-dodecane, n-octanol and naphthalene. Particularly, the MP5 stationary phase displays unique retention for dibromoalkanes, which was found to be closely related with the linker length, and shows high resolving capability for a wide range of positional and structural isomers, including alkylbenzenes, chlorobenzenes and chloronitrobenzenes, naphthalene derivatives, phenols and anilines. Moreover, the MP5 column showed good thermal stability and repeatability and reproducibility with the relative standard deviation in the range of 0.02-0.04% for intra-day, 0.32-0.46% for inter-day and 1.5-3.4% for between-column, respectively. This work demonstrates an promising future of pillar[n]arenes as a new type of stationary phase in chromatographic separations.

Abstract:Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) stationary phases functionalized with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and graphene, respectively, for the columns in micro gas chromatography are presented in this paper. To exploit the merits of MWCNTs and graphene in terms of their high specific surface area, low surface energy and chemical inertness, experimental conditions for separation (heating rate and final temperature of temperature programming, flow rate of carrier gas and the volume of samples injection) are investigated, and separations of both polar and nonpolar compound mixtures under these conditions are performed. Compared with PDMS-only coated stationary phases, the functionalization of the phases with carbon nano-materials improves the performance of columns in separation, repeatability, stability and revolution significantly.

Abstract:This work reports the first example of employing bio-inspired polydopamine (PDA) in capillary column fabrication of a graphene stationary phase (denoted as G-PDA@capillary) for gas chromatographic (GC) separations. The as-fabricated G-PDA@capillary column achieved improved column efficiency of 3400 plates per m and separation performance in contrast to the graphene column without PDA (G@capillary). In particular, it exhibited high selectivity and resolving ability for alkane isomers, alcohol isomers, substituted benzenes with diverse groups and many other types of analytes. Additionally, the G-PDA@capillary column showed good repeatability with RSD values less than 0.02% for run-to-run, 0.16% for day-to-day and 5.0% for column-to-column, respectively, and thermal stability up to 300 degrees C. This work demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed strategy by integrating graphene sheets with PDA coating, which is efficient in addressing the current problem with graphene sheets and exploring its full potential in GC separations.

Abstract:Seaweed-like graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) has a unique porous architecture composed of interlocking g-C3N4 nanofibers (NF-C3N4) with much higher surface area than bulk g-C3N4 and shows good potential in separation science. This work investigated the separation performance of NF-C3N4 as stationary phase for capillary gas chromatographic (GC) separations. The NF-C3N4 column exhibits weak polarity and high column efficiency of 4728 plates/m for n-dodecane. Importantly, it displays good separation performance for a wide range of analytes and shows different retention behaviors from the bulk g-C3N4 column and commercial HP-5MS column with 5% phenylpolysiloxane. Particularly, it shows high resolving capability for both aliphatic and aromatic isomers. In addition, NF-C3N4 column has high thermal stability up to 280°C and good separation repeatability with relative standard deviation (RSD) values in the range of 0.29-0.61% for intra-day, 0.56-1.1% for inter-day and 2.0-4.9% for between-column, respectively. Moreover, it was applied for the determination of isomer impurities in real samples, showing good potential in GC applications.

Abstract:Carbonaceous stationary phases have gained much attention for their peculiar selectivity and robustness. Herein we report the fabrication and application of a graphene-coated polymeric stationary phase for anion exchange chromatography. The graphene-coated particles were fabricated by a facile evaporation-reduction method. These hydrophilic particles were proven appropriate substrates for grafting of hyperbranched condensation polymers (HBCPs) to make pellicular anion exchangers. The new phase was characterized by zeta potentials, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and scanning electron microscope. Frontal displacement chromatography showed that the capacities of the anion exchangers were tuned by both graphene amount and HBCPs layer count. The chromatographic performance of graphene-coated anion exchangers was demonstrated with separation of inorganic anions, organic acids, carbohydrates and amino acids. Good reproducibility was obtained by consecutive injections, indicating high chemical stability of the coating.
Molecular Dynamics Simulation of the Separation of CH4/CO2 by Nanoporous Graphene

Abstract:The processes involved in the separation of gaseous CH4/CO2 mixtures using a nanoporous graphene membrane were simulated using a molecular dynamics method, and the effects of three functional modifications (i.e., N/H, all H, and N/-CH3 modifications) in the nanopores were analyzed. The results showed that the gas molecules could form an adsorption layer on the surface of the graphene. The adsorption intensity of the CO2 molecules was higher than that of the CH4 molecules. The functional modifications in the nanopores not only reduced the permeable area, but also improved the adsorption intensity of the gas molecules by changing the potential distribution of atoms at the edge of nanopores, and therefore affecting the permeability and selectivity of the gas mixture being separated by the nanoporous graphene membranes. Furthermore, the permeability of the CO2 molecules was as high as 10(6) GPU (1 GPU=3.35x 10(-10) mol.s(-1).m(-2).Pa-1), which was far greater than those of the existing polymer gas separation membranes. These results therefore demonstrate that nanoporous graphene membranes could be used in an extensive range of applications in industrial gas separation processes, such as natural gas processing and CO2 capture.
Efficient Exfoliation of Graphite in Chloroform with a Pyrene-Containing Hyperbranched Polyethylene As Stabilizer to Render Pyrene-Functionalized High-Quality Graphene

Abstract:The use of stabilizers in liquid-phase exfoliation of graphite can effectively promote graphite exfoliation in common solvents, and concurrently render functionalized graphene by adsorbing them on the exfoliated graphene surface. Thus, the exploration of novel stabilizers is especially important for graphene liquid-phase production and related applications. Herein, we report the successful application of a pyrene-functionalized hyperbranched polyethylene (HBPE@Py) as the stabilizer for graphite exfoliation in chloroform. The polymer has a global hyperbranched polyethylene backbone and multiple covalently bonded pyrene moieties as branch ends. It can be synthesized via ethylene copolymerization using a Pd-diimine catalyst under mild conditions, 0.1 MPa/25 degrees C. Due to the cooperative effect of the CH-pi and pi-pi interactions between the HBPE@Py and graphene surface, some of the polymer is irreversibly adsorbed on the latter, thus effectively preventing their re-stacking and concurrently rendering pyrene-functionalized graphene. This allows us to obtain stable dispersions of few-layer graphene with relatively high concentrations (0.10-0.50 mg mL(-1)) and exfoliation efficiencies (1.6-13.0%). The resultant graphene is confirmed to be high-quality and shown to be highly stable when dispersed in chloroform, even the free polymer has been thoroughly removed. From the dispersion, a flexible, conductive graphene film and polymer-based graphene nanocomposites have been successfully prepared. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Graphene has great potentials for the use in sample preparation due to its ultra high specific surface area, superior chemical stability, and excellent thermal stability. In our work, a novel graphene-based SPE disk was developed for separation and preconcentration of trace polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from environmental water samples. Based on the strong π-π stacking interaction between the analytes and graphene, the analytes extracted by graphene were eluted by cyclohexane and then determined by GC-MS. Under the optimized conditions, high flow rate (30 mL/min) and sensitivity (0.84-13 ng/L) were achieved. The proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of real environmental water samples with recoveries ranging from 72.8 to 106.2%. Furthermore, the property of anticlogging and reusability was also improved. This work reveals great potentials of graphene-based SPE disk in environmental analytical.
Performance and Selectivity of Dicyanuric-Functionalized Polycaprolactone As Stationary Phase for Capillary Gas Chromatography

Abstract:Dicyanuric-functionalized polycaprolactone (DPCL) was explored for its separation performance in gas chromatography (GC). The statically coated DPCL capillary column (0.25 mm, i.d.) showed column efficiency of 3460 platesim determined by naphthalene at 120 degrees C. McReynolds constants and Abrahamis system constants were also determined to evaluate the polarity and possible molecular interactions of the stationary phase. As a result, DPCL column exhibited excellent separation performance for diverse types of analytes with good peak shapes. Most interestingly, it shows unique amphiphilic selectivity and high-resolution capability for both apolar to polar isomers. In addition, DPCL column had good column repeatability with the RSD values below 0.06% for run-to-run, 0.09-0.40% for day-to-day and 1.7-3.6% for column-to-column, and good thermal stability up to 280 degrees C. The high selectivity and resolving capability demonstrate the great advantages of the DPCL stationary phase for simultaneous determination of analytes of great variety in complex samples. Abstract:Using novel ideas for the fabrication of epitaxial graphene (EG) on SiC, two forms of graphene termed as vertical aligned graphene sheets (VAGS) and graphene covered SiC powder (GCSP) were derived, respectively, from SiC slices and SiC powder, aimed for applications in energy storage and photocatalysis. Herein, the fabrication procedures, morphology characteristics, some intrinsic physical properties and performances for applications in field effect transistor (FET) and cold cathode field emission source are revealed and analyzed based on the graphene materials. The EG on a 2-inch SiC (0001) showed an average sheet resistance about 720 Ω/□ with a non-uniformity 7.2%. The FETs fabricated on the EG possessed a cutoff frequency 80 GHz. Based on the VAGS derived from a completely carbonized SiC slice, a magnetic phase diagram of graphene with irregular zigzag edges is also reported.
A Graphitized-Carbon Monolithic Column

Abstract:The preparation of a novel carbon monolithic column for high performance liquid chromatography is described. A phenolic resin rod with embedded 10-microm silica beads was prepared by acid-catalyzed polymerization of a resorcinol/iron(III) complex and formaldehyde. This rod was carbonized and graphitized under inert atmosphere with a programmed temperature cycle from room temperature to 1250 degrees C. Subsequently, the silica beads along with iron catalysts were removed, leaving a porous carbon rod. Imaging of this monolithic rod by scanning and transmission electron microscopies revealed a highly interconnected bimodal porous structure. The porosity and pore size distribution of the mesopores were characterized by N2 absorption/desorption. Graphene sheets were found in the TEM images of the carbon rod, and the graphite index was characterized by Raman spectrum and X-ray diffraction. A monolithic column prepared with the aforementioned carbon rod was evaluated using a mixture of alkylbenzenes. It exhibited an excellent separation power and a low hydraulic resistance. The bundle-of-capillaries model was used to characterize the hydrodynamics of this monolith. Its permeability was found to agree well with the theoretical one.
In-situ carbonizing of coal pitch on the surface of silica sphere as quasi-graphitized carbon stationary phase for liquid chromatography

Abstract:A novel chromatography stationary phase with a quasi-graphitized carbon modified shell has been developed. Coal pitch was directly carbonized on the surface of porous silica with in-situ carbonization . The carbonized coal pitch coating exhibits some degree of graphitization with a 78 nm-thick layer on the surface of silica and a 0.5 nm-thick layer on the inner surface of the mesopores. Based on the special structure of the graphitized carbon coating, the novel stationary phase can provide multiple interactions such as hydrophobic interaction, π - π interaction and dipole-dipole interaction. The novel composite material exhibited unique separation selectivity and excellent separation efficiency for polar compounds, including imidazoles, nucleosides and pesticides. Besides, the packed column also exhibited great repeatability with the RSDs of the retention time of nucleosides between 0.07%-0.50% ( n = 5). Finally, satisfied result was achieved in the separation of fullerenes on the new column, suggesting the great potential in the industrial-scale purification of fullerenes.

Abstract:Nanoporous graphene is a very promising gas separation membrane with ultrahigh permeability and selectivity. We demonstrate from molecular dynamics insights that the nanoporous graphene membranes with appropriate pore size and geometry can achieve high permeability and selectivity for separating CH4/CO2, CH4/H2S and CH4/N2 mixtures. For the 12-graphene-ring-units nanopores functionalized by N and H atoms, the permeance of CO2, H2S and N2 are on the order of 105–106GPU (gas permeation unit); the selectivity of permeating gases (i.e. CO2, H2S and N2) over the non-permeating gases (i.e. CH4) is as high as 102. The separation performance of the nanoporous graphene membranes for the three gas mixtures far surpasses the upper bond of the conventional polymer membranes. We anticipate that the development of nanoporous graphene membranes will provide a novel and high efficiency membrane separation technology for the natural gas processing and other gas separation processes in the industries.
Evaluation of graphene as an advantageous adsorbent for solid-phase extraction with chlorophenols as model analytes

Abstract:Graphene, a novel class of carbon nanostructures, possesses an ultrahigh specific surface area, and thus has great potentials for the use as sorbent materials. We herein demonstrate the use of graphene as a novel adsorbent for solid-phase extraction (SPE). Eight chlorophenols (CPs) as model analytes were extracted on a graphene-packed SPE cartridge, and then eluted with alkaline methanol. The concentrations in the eluate were determined by HPLC with multi-wavelength UV detection. Under the optimized conditions, high sensitivity (detection limits 0.1-0.4 ng/mL) and good reproducibility of CPs (RSDs 2.2-7.7% for run-to-run assays) were achieved. Comparative studies showed that graphene was superior to other adsorbents including C18 silica, graphitic carbon, single- and multi-walled carbon nanotubes for the extraction of CPs. Some other advantages of graphene as SPE adsorbent, such as good compatibility with various organic solvents, good reusability and no impact of sorbent drying, have also been demonstrated. The proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of tap and river water samples with recoveries ranging from 77.2 to 116.6%. This work not only proposes a useful method for environmental water sample pretreatment, but also reveals great potentials of graphene as an excellent sorbent material in analytical processes.

High-efficiency CO2 capture and separation over N2 in penta-graphene pores: insights from GCMC and DFT simulations

Abstract:CO2 capture and separation over N2 in penta-graphene (PG) slit pores (PG-x, x = 7−12) were investigated by using grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. GCMC results showed that PG pores exhibit high-efficiency CO2 capture and separation over N2. The best performing PG-8 exhibited an extraordinary CO2 adsorption capacity of 8.11 mmol/g at 1 bar and 5.56 mmol/g at 0.15 bar, respectively, with a high CO2/N2 selectivity of 69 at 1 bar and 298 K. The relative concentration distribution analyses illustrated that gas molecules were mainly adsorbed nearby PG nanosheet at their equilibrium states. DFT results showed that CO2 had a higher adsorption energy than that of N2 on PG nanosheet, further demonstrating PG pore as a promising material for CO2 capture and separation.
