Abstract:Efficient fabrication of excellent fiber coatings for high-performance solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is interesting. Here, a high-efficiency synthesis strategy on graphene oxide/polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (GO/POSS) composite-coated fiber was exploited via an ultra-fast UV polymerization in one step, and applied to excellent SPME of polycyclic musks (PCMs). Using methacryloxy siloxane-grafted GO and POSS-methacryl substituted (POSS-MA) as functional monomers, a facile and direct UV polymerization of multiple reactions including alkenyl radical reaction and thiol-ene click chemistry was fulfilled on thiol-pretreated fiber in only 5 min without tedious process. Characteristics such as morphology, FT-IR, XPS, BET and TG of fiber coating were studied in detail, as well as the SPME performance. Attributing to the rigid stereo conformation of POSS and large conjugate plane of GO-based nanosheet, the significant surface area, high hydrophobicity and intrinsic π-π interactions were adopted in fiber coating. In comparison of commercial SPME fibers, POSS-based or GO-based SPME fibers, a superior extraction performance towards PCMs was achieved with GO/POSS-coated fiber. High-efficiency extraction of PCMs was gained with prominent enrichment factors and the sensitive detection limits of PCMs were of 0.04-0.12 ng/L. In particular, the extraction efficiency was robust and still maintained a high level above 93% for PCMs even after 150 cycle's applications. Good recoveries of PCMs reached 86.6%-102.1% and 86.7%-101.3% in river water and cosmetic samples, respectively. It lights an attractive approach to efficiently fabricating robust GO/POSS-coated fiber for high-performance SPME of PCMs.

Abstract:Poly (methylphenylvinylsiloxane) (PMPVS) coating for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) was first prepared by using sol-gel approach and cross-linking of free radical initiation. The extraction properties of the novel coating for aromatic compounds were investigated using a self-made SPME device coupled with a gas chromatograph-flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The coating provided high surface areas and allowed high extraction efficiency. Compared with some commercial SPME stationary phases, the new phase showed better selectivity and sensitivity toward aromatic compounds. Furthermore, PMPVS coating showed good thermal stability and longer lifetime.
A solid-phase microextraction fiber with carbon nanoparticles as sorbent material prepared by a simple flame-based preparation process

Abstract:A novel carbon nanoparticles-coated solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber was prepared via a simple and low-cost flame-based preparation process, with stainless steel wire as support. Surface characteristic of the fiber was studied with scanning electron microscope. A nano-scaled brushy structure was observed. Coupled to gas chromatography (GC), the fiber was used to extract phthalate esters (PAEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in aqueous samples. Analytical performances of the proposed method were investigated under the optimum extraction conditions (extraction temperature, 40°C; content of KCl, 30% (w/v); extraction time, 50min for PAEs and 40min for PAHs) and compared with other reports for the same analytes. Calibration ranges were 0.06-500μgL(-1) for di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), and 0.1-300μgL(-1) for di-cyclohexyl phthalate (DCHP) and di-(2-ethyl-hexyl) phthalate (DEHP). For the eight PAHs, good linearity was obtained ranging from 0.01 to 150μgL(-1). Limits of detection were 0.005μgL(-1) for three PAEs and 0.001-0.003μgL(-1) for eight PAHs. The fiber exhibited excellent stability. It can be used for 100 times with RSDs of extraction efficiency less than 22.4%. The as-established SPME-GC method was applied to determine PAEs in food-wrap and PAHs in cigarette ash and snow water, and satisfactory results were obtained. The carbon nanoparticles-coated SPME fiber was efficient for sampling of organic compounds from aqueous samples.
Hierarchical covalent organic framework hollow nanofibers-bonded stainless steel fiber for efficient solid phase microextraction

Abstract:The solid phase microextraction (SPME) technique has been widely applied in the detection of trace compounds in food, environment, and medicine due to its advantages of easy quantification, simple operation, and greenness. Herein, a templating strategy with SiO 2 nanofibers (SiO 2 NFs) is reported to synthesize hierarchical covalent organic framework hollow nanofibers (COF HNFs)-coated stainless steel fiber for SPME application with dramatically enhanced enrichment performance for trace analytes. The construction of hierarchical porosity inside the microextraction coatings can not only increase the specific surface area of COF extraction materials for obtaining more abundant adsorption sites but also greatly improve the accessibility of internal COF micropores. Moreover, the thicknesses of the microextraction COF coatings can be facilely tailored by adjusting the amount of SiO 2 NFs pre-assembled on the SPME fibers. On the headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) of antimicrobial residues, the developed COF TpBD-Me 2 HNFs-12 fibers achieve enrichment factors of 2026 and 1823 for thymol and carvacrol respectively, which are significantly higher than those obtained from the counterpart COF TpBD-Me 2 -bonded fiber (8.5–8.2 times) and commercial CAR/PDMS fiber (3.3–4.4 times). Furthermore, the developed method was demonstrated to have wide linearity (0.1–50 μg L -1 ), low limits of detection (0.010 μg L -1 ), good thermal stability and excellent reusability (>60 recycles), demonstrating great application potential in the extraction of trace organic pollutants. The strategy developed in this work is applicable to preparing a variety of topological COF (e.g., TpBD, TpPa-1) HNFs-bonded fibers.

Abstract:The coating material determines the sensitivity and selectivity of solid-phase microextraction (SPME). Graphene is predicted to have remarkable properties, such as high thermal conductivity, superior mechanical properties, excellent electronic transport properties and good extraction ability. In this work we immobilized the graphene onto a stainless steel wire to obtain a novel SPME coating based on sol-gel technique. The new fiber possessed a homogeneous, porous surface and showed excellent thermal and solvent stability. Under the optimized conditions, its extraction efficiencies for seven organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) were higher than those of two commercial fibers (PDMS, 85μm; PDMS/DVB, 65μm). Using the self-made sol-gel-graphene SPME fiber, the limits of detections for seven OCPs were found to be ranged from 0.19ngL(-1) (o,p-DDT) to 18.3ngL(-1) (heptachlor). The repeatabilities for each single fiber were evaluated and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) ranged from 4.7% to 10.6%. The reproducibilities of fiber-to-fiber were 2.3-13.6%. The developed method was successfully applied to the determination of OCPs in rainwater. Hexachlorobenzene (62.7ng/L), trans-chlordance (79.6ng/L) and p,p-DDT (9.30ng/L) were detected. The relative recoveries ranged from 77.7% to 120%.

In situ self-assembly of three-dimensional porous graphene film on zinc fiber for solid-phase microextraction of polychlorinated biphenyls

Abstract:Three-dimensional porous graphene film (3DPGF) was fabricated on Zn fiber for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) through in-situ self-assembly strategy at room temperature. Fast electron transfer due to ionization of zinc induces reduction of graphene oxide and thus leads to the layer-by-layer interfacial deposition of graphene sheets, forming three-dimensional porous network morphology. The 3D interpenetrating porous structure could provide more available adsorption site for the target molecules and also enhance mass transfer efficiency in the extraction process. Therefore, the obtained 3DPGF fiber exhibited excellent performance when applied in the SPME of preconcentration and quantification of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in environment waters. The developed method showed a linear range from 1.0 ng L-1 and 200 ng L-1 with an acceptable correlation (R2=0.990). The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were found 0.03-0.2 ng L-1 and 0.1-0.8 ng L-1, respectively. The proposed method was applied in real water samples analysis with the recoveries ranging from 63.1 to 111.3%. The present study expanded the application of three-dimensional porous graphene materials in sample preparation and revealed its potential in SPME application.

Abstract:The preparation of a novel carbon monolithic column for high performance liquid chromatography is described. A phenolic resin rod with embedded 10-microm silica beads was prepared by acid-catalyzed polymerization of a resorcinol/iron(III) complex and formaldehyde. This rod was carbonized and graphitized under inert atmosphere with a programmed temperature cycle from room temperature to 1250 degrees C. Subsequently, the silica beads along with iron catalysts were removed, leaving a porous carbon rod. Imaging of this monolithic rod by scanning and transmission electron microscopies revealed a highly interconnected bimodal porous structure. The porosity and pore size distribution of the mesopores were characterized by N2 absorption/desorption. Graphene sheets were found in the TEM images of the carbon rod, and the graphite index was characterized by Raman spectrum and X-ray diffraction. A monolithic column prepared with the aforementioned carbon rod was evaluated using a mixture of alkylbenzenes. It exhibited an excellent separation power and a low hydraulic resistance. The bundle-of-capillaries model was used to characterize the hydrodynamics of this monolith. Its permeability was found to agree well with the theoretical one.

Abstract:Graphene fiber (GF) is of practical importance because it integrates the remarkable properties of individual graphene sheets into useful, macroscopic ensembles that possess the common characteristics of fibers, such as mechanical flexibility for textiles, while maintaining the unique advantages over conventional carbon fibers, such as low cost, light weight, shapeability and ease of functionalization in an in situ or post-synthetic manner for various applications. In this review, we judiciously summarize the significant advances in GFs achieved by our group and others in recent years, including the tunable and controllable preparation of GFs with functionality and their remarkable applications for unconventional devices, such as flexible fiber-type actuators, robots, motors, photovoltaic cells and supercapacitors.

Abstract:Graphene fiber is a macroscopic carbonaceous fiber composed of microscopic graphene sheets, and has attracted extensive attention. Graphene building blocks form a highly ordered structure, resulting in fibers with the same properties as graphene, such as superior mechanical and electrical performance, low weight, excellent flexibility, and ease of functionalization. Moreover, graphene fibers are compatible with traditional textile technologies, facilitating the development of wearable electronics, flexible energy devices, and smart textiles. Graphene fibers were first prepared in 2011 by wet spinning of graphene oxide (GO) solution, which was dispersed in water. Various fabrication methods have been developed to assemble graphene sheets into fibers since then and different strategies have been proposed to optimize their structure and performance. Graphene fibers have applications in numerous fields, including conductors, sensors, actuators, smart textiles, and flexible energy devices. This review aims to provide a comprehensive picture of the preparation approaches, properties, and applications of graphene fibers. Firstly, the preparation processes, unique structures, and properties of three typical carbonaceous fibers-carbon fibers, carbon nanotube (CNT) fibers, and graphene fibers-are compared. It can be seen that graphene fibers possess the unique structures, such as the large grain sizes and highly aligned structure, endowing them with the outstanding properties. Then a variety of fabrication techniques have been summarized, including wet spinning, dry spinning, dry-jet wet spinning, spaceconfined hydrothermal assembly, film conversion approach, and template-assisted chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Wet spinning is a common method to fabricate high-performance graphene fibers and is promising for the large-scale production of graphene fibers. Besides, various strategies for improving the mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of graphene fibers are introduced in detail, including well-chosen graphene building blocks, optimized fabrication processes, and high-temperature treatments. Although the electrical and thermal transport properties of typical graphene fibers are better than those of carbon fibers, the strength and modulus of graphene fibers are inferior. Therefore, the enhancement of the mechanical properties of graphene fibers by optimizing the composition of precursors, controlling and adjusting the assembly processes, and exploring feasible post-treatment procedures are essential. Meanwhile, the review outlines the applications of graphene fibers in high-performance conductors, functional fabrics, flexible sensors, actuators, fiber-shaped supercapacitors and batteries. Finally, the persisting challenges and the future scope of graphene fibers are discussed. We believe that graphene fibers will become a new structural and functional material that can be applied in numerous fields in the future, aided by the continuous development of materials and techniques.
Preparation of a new coating of graphene oxide/nickel complex on a nickelized metal surface for direct immersion solid phase microextraction of some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Abstract:Abstract Background Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is a versatile sampling and sample preparation technology that possess a significant application in the extraction and pre-concentration of a broad range of micro-pollutants from different kind of matrices. Selection and preparation of an appropriate fiber substrate and coating materials have always been the main challenges of the SPME procedure. This paper introduces a high-efficiency metal-based SPME fiber with a new chemical coating of nickel/graphene oxide/nickel tetraazamacrocyclic complex (Ni/GO/NiTAM). Result The Ni/GO/NiTAM sorbent was electroless deposited onto the surface of an aluchrom (Alu) wire, and then the prepared fiber was employed for the extraction and pre-concentration of some PAHs before their HPLC–UV analysis. The prepared fiber characterization data were assessed using FE-SEM, EDX, XRD, FT-IR, and BET techniques. The method validation parameters, including the linearity range (LRs: 0.10 to 200.0 μg L −1 ), the limit of detection (LODs: 0.03‒0.30 μg L −1 ), and the limit of quantification (LOQs: 0.10–1.00 μg L −1 ), under optimal conditions. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of intra-day, inter-day, and single fiber repeatability (for the samples spiked at 25 μg L ‒1 ) were in the range of 0.32–2.94, 1.20–4.09, and 1.42‒4.39%, respectively. In addition, the technique recoveries (RR %) and enrichment factors (EF) were in the range of 83.10‒107.80% and 83–164, respectively. Conclusion The fiber fabrication was simple, and the applied materials were also economical and easily accessible. Alu metal has high physicochemical and mechanical stability and thus can be a good alternative for the substrate of the fragile commercial SPME fibers. High rigidity and durability, long service life, and high extraction capability are some of the other advantages of the offered fiber.

Abstract:In this study, a novel three-dimensional hierarchical porous deep eutectic solvents-modified graphene aerogel (3D DES-GA) was synthesized for use as a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber coating. The SPME fiber was characterized by its fluffy and hierarchical porous structure, uniform thickness, and rapid mass transfer capabilities. This fiber demonstrated a lifetime (≥160 uses) and excellent precision (with relative standard deviations of 2.4-6.6% for single fiber and 6.0-9.8% for fiber-to-fiber repeatability). The SPME fiber also exhibited remarkable extraction performance for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls, which are common persistent organic pollutants in environmental samples. When combined with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, the method allowed for high-efficiency extraction (enrichment factors ranging from 1225 to 4652 folds) and sensitive determination (limit of detection ranging from 0.010 to 0.056 pg g-1) of polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) in complex samples. To validate this method, we applied it to the determination of four PCNs in five types of fish tissues. The results revealed the presence of 1-chloronaphthalene at concentrations of 7.0 ± 2.9-34.8 ± 2.1 pg g-1 and 1,4-dichloronaphthalene at concentrations of 6.0 ± 0.3-10.9 ± 1.4 pg g-1 in three fish species. Compared with reported sample pretreatment methods reported in the literature, this proposed headspace SPME method offers additional advantages, including simplicity of operation and reduced sample and organic solvent consumption.

Abstract:Graphene has great potentials for the use in sample preparation due to its ultra high specific surface area, superior chemical stability, and excellent thermal stability. In our work, a novel graphene-based SPE disk was developed for separation and preconcentration of trace polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from environmental water samples. Based on the strong π-π stacking interaction between the analytes and graphene, the analytes extracted by graphene were eluted by cyclohexane and then determined by GC-MS. Under the optimized conditions, high flow rate (30 mL/min) and sensitivity (0.84-13 ng/L) were achieved. The proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of real environmental water samples with recoveries ranging from 72.8 to 106.2%. Furthermore, the property of anticlogging and reusability was also improved. This work reveals great potentials of graphene-based SPE disk in environmental analytical.

Dry Spinning Approach to Continuous Graphene Fibers with High Toughness

Abstract:Graphene fiber (GF) has emerged as a new carbonaceous fiber species since graphene-based liquid crystals were discovered. The growing performances of GFs in terms of their mechanical performance and their functionalities have assured their extensive applications in structural materials and functional textiles. To date, many spinning strategies utilizing coagulation baths have been applied in GF, which necessitates a complicated washing process. Dry spinning is a more convenient and green method for use with fibers in the chemical fiber industry, and should be a good option for GFs; however, this technique has never been used in a system of GF. In this research, first the dry spinning technique was used to fabricate continuous GFs and the dry spun GFs showed good toughness and flexibility. The dry spinnability of graphene oxide liquid crystals was achieved by choosing dispersive solvents with low surface tension and high volatility. The dry spun neat GFs possessed high toughness up to 19.12 MJ m(-3), outperforming the wet spun neat GFs. This dry spinning methodology facilitates the green fabrication of fibers of graphene and graphene-beyond two-dimensional nanomaterials, and it may also be extended to other printing technologies for complex graphene architectures.

Abstract:Macroscopic assembly of graphene sheets has renovated the preparation of neat carbonaceous fibers with integrating high performance and superior functionalities, beyond the pyrolysis of conventional polymeric precursors. To date, graphene microfibers by the liquid crystalline wet-spinning method have been established. However, how to reliably prepare continuous neat graphene nanofibers remains unknown. Here, we present the electrospinning of neat graphene nanofibers enabled by modulating colossally extensional flow state of graphene oxide liquid crystals. We use polymer with mega molecular weight as transient additives to realize the colossal extensional flow and electrospinning. The neat graphene nanofibers feature high electronic quality and crystallinity and exhibit high electrical conductivity of 2.02 × 106 S/m that is to be comparable with single crystal graphite whisker. The electrospinning of graphene nanofibers was extended to prepare large-area fabric with high flexibility and superior specific electrical/thermal conductivities. The electrospinning of graphene nanofibers opens the door to nanofibers of rich two-dimensional sheets and the neat graphene nanofibers may grow to be a new species after conventional carbonaceous nanofibers and whiskers in broad functional applications.Graphic abstractElectrospinning of neat graphene nanofibers is realized by achieving the colossal extension flow of GO dispersion with the assistance of mega polymer. Abstract:Solid phase microextraction (SPME) is an innovative, solvent free technology that is fast, economical and versatile. SPME is a fiber coated with a liquid (polymer), a solid (sorbent) or a combination of both. The fiber coating takes up the compounds from the sample by absorption in the case of liquid coatings or adsorption in the case of solid coatings. The SPME fiber is then transferred with the help of a syringe like device into the analytical instrument for desorption and analysis of the target analytes. The sol-gel process provides a versatile method to prepare size, shape and charge selective materials of high purity and homogeneity by means of preparation techniques different from the traditional ones, for the chemical analysis. This review is on the current state of the art and future trends in the developments of solid phase microextraction (SPME) fibers using sol-gel method. To achieve more selective determination of different compound classes, the variety of different coating material for SPME fibers has increased. Further developments in SPME as a highly efficient extraction technique, will greatly depend on new breakthroughs in the area of new coating material developments for the SPME fibers. In sol-gel approach, appropriate sol-gel precursors and other building blocks can be selected to create a stationary phase with desired structural and surface properties. This approach is efficient in integrating the advantageous properties of organic and inorganic material systems and thereby increasing and improving the extraction selectivity of the produced amalgam organic-inorganic stationary phases. This review is mainly focused on recent advanced developments in the design, synthesis, characterisation, properties and application of sol-gel in preparation of coatings for the SPME fibers.

Abstract:Graphene, a novel class of carbon nanostructures, possesses an ultrahigh specific surface area, and thus has great potentials for the use as sorbent materials. We herein demonstrate the use of graphene as a novel adsorbent for solid-phase extraction (SPE). Eight chlorophenols (CPs) as model analytes were extracted on a graphene-packed SPE cartridge, and then eluted with alkaline methanol. The concentrations in the eluate were determined by HPLC with multi-wavelength UV detection. Under the optimized conditions, high sensitivity (detection limits 0.1-0.4 ng/mL) and good reproducibility of CPs (RSDs 2.2-7.7% for run-to-run assays) were achieved. Comparative studies showed that graphene was superior to other adsorbents including C18 silica, graphitic carbon, single- and multi-walled carbon nanotubes for the extraction of CPs. Some other advantages of graphene as SPE adsorbent, such as good compatibility with various organic solvents, good reusability and no impact of sorbent drying, have also been demonstrated. The proposed method was successfully applied to the analysis of tap and river water samples with recoveries ranging from 77.2 to 116.6%. This work not only proposes a useful method for environmental water sample pretreatment, but also reveals great potentials of graphene as an excellent sorbent material in analytical processes.

Abstract:The development of advanced functional nanomaterials for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) remains an imperative aspect of sample pretreatment. Herein, we introduce a novel SPME fiber consisting of graphene fibers modified with ordered mesoporous carbon nanotubes arrays (CNTAs) tailored for the determination of benzene series in oilfield wastewater, which is synthesized by an ionic liquid-assisted wet spinning process of graphene nanosheets, followed by a precisely controlled growth of metal–organic framework and subsequent pyrolysis treatment. The resulting robust microfiber structure resembles a "hairbrush" configuration, with a crumpled graphene fiber "stem" and high-order mesoporous CNTAs "hairs". This unique architecture significantly enhances the SPME capacity, as validated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The hairbrush-like nanocarbon assembled microfibers possess structural characteristics, a high specific surface area, and numerous binding sites, offering efficient enrichment of benzene series compounds in oilfield wastewater, including benzene, ethylbenzene, m -xylene, p -xylene, and toluene. Our analysis demonstrates that these microfibers exhibit broad linear ranges (0.2–600 μg L −1 ), low detection limits (0.005–0.03 mg L −1 ), and excellent repeatability (3.2–5.5% for one fiber, 2.1–6.7% for fiber-to-fiber) for detection. When compared to commercial alternatives, these hairbrush-like nanocarbon-assembled microfibers exhibit significantly enhanced extraction efficiency for benzene series compounds.

Abstract:A new solid phase microextraction fiber was successfully synthesized using sol–gel technique. The selective and efficient graphitic carbon nitride modified with titanium dioxide (g-C 3 N 4 –TiO 2 ) adsorbent was first recruited as fiber coating. The fabricated fiber was exploited for extraction and preconcentration of Pb(II) ions in real samples, using direct solid-phase microextraction method. The structure of the synthesized fiber was confirmed by FE-SEM, FT-IR, and EDX analyses. The optimum values of some parameters were obtained. The limit of detection (LOD) of the procedure was 0.16 μg L −1 , and the relative standard deviations for repeatability (for one fiber) and reproducibility (fiber-to-fiber) of fabricated fibers (RSDs) were found to be 3.8% ( n = 5) and 3% ( n = 5), respectively. In addition, according to the results, the fiber approved that can be reused 17 times without a significant reduction in the percentage of analyte recovery. Finally, the method was used to extract and preconcentrate lead ions from real samples, viz. tea, medicinal plants, etc.
