Abstract:Two new coordination polymers, {[Cd(BIDPT)(oba)]·0.5H2O}n (1) and {[Zn(BIDPT)(4,4′-sdb)]·2.25H2O}n (2) (BIDPT=4,4′-bis(imidazol-l-yl)diphenyl thioether, H2oba=4,4′-oxydibenzoic acid, 4,4′-H2sdb=4,4′-sulfonyldibenzoic acid), have been solvothermally synthesized and characterized. Both 1 and 2 show 2-fold interpenetrating 3D frameworks with {65∙8} cds and {66} dia topology, respectively. These two coordination polymers show strong luminescence and their luminescence could be quenched by a series of nitro explosives. Importantly, they exhibit very highly sensitive and selective detection of picric acid compared to other nitro explosives.

Abstract:Two luminescent Cd(II) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were prepared from electron-rich π-conjugated fluorescent ligands. They are isostructural with sql nets. Their strong luminescences can be quenched by a series of nitroaromatic explosives. Notably, MOF 1 shows highly selective and sensitive detection of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), while MOF 2 exhibits good responses toward picric acid (PA) compared with other nitroaromatic explosives. This different order of quenching efficiency is because there are H-bonding interactions between MOF 1 and 4-NP, while MOF 2 lacks these H-bonding interactions. MOF 1 displays highly selective and sensitive detection of 4-NP with the high quenching constant (6.74× 104 M-1) and low detection limit (34.48 ppb), which is better than those of known MOFs. MOF 1 and MOF 2 have highly sensitive and selective detection of 4-NP and PA in the practical application, respectively.

Abstract:Because of serious environmental pollutions, the detection of hazardous and explosive nitro-aromatic compounds using metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) has been a promising research field in the current scenario. Here, we report a new fluorescent MOF, [Zn2(TCPE)(tta)2]·2DMF·4H2O·2Me2NH2+ (HNU-34, H4TCPE = 1,1,2,2-tetra(4-carboxylphenyl)ethylene, 1H-tta = 1H-tetrazole), which possesses a three-dimensional configuration and one-dimensional channels along the c-axis. It can serve as a luminescence sensor for the detection of nitrophenol explosives through different quenching effects, especially for mononitrophenol and dinitrophenol. The detection limits of 2,6-dinitrophenol and trinitrophenol are 29.45 and 36.15 nM, respectively, which are among the high level of the reported MOF sensors, especially for dinitrophenol.

Abstract:Two metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely {[Zn3(L)2(4,4′-bipy)(DMF)2]·2H2O}n (1) and {[Cd3(L)2(4,4′-bipy)(H2O)2].2DMF}n (2) (4,4′-bipy = 4,4′-bipyridine, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide), were solvothermally prepared based on a rigid tricarboxylic acid 3-(3,5-dicarboxylphenyl)-5-(3-carboxylphenyl)-1-H-1,2,4-triazole (H3L). X-ray crystallographic analysis reveals that 1 and 2 are isostructural and both emit blue light. Notably, 1 exhibits good luminescent sensing for nitro-containing compounds and Fe3+ ions. In addition, the emission colors of 1 can be tuned from yellow to white and to blue by encapsulating different mole ratios of Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions and changing the excitation wavelength. A white emission with the Commission International de l’Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.331, 0.337), which fall within the white-light region, emerges upon excitation at 340nm.
An Ultrastable Luminescent Metal–Organic Framework for Selective Sensing of Nitroaromatic Compounds and Nitroimidazole-Based Drug Molecules

Abstract:A chemically stable and thermally stable luminescent Cd(II)-based metal–organic framework (MOF), [Cd3(DBPT)2(H2O)4]·5H2O (1), featuring an open Lewis basic triazolyl active site in the host, was successfully assembled by using the multifunctional ligand of 3-(3,5-dicarboxylphenyl)-5-(4-carboxylphenyl)-1-H-1,2,4-triazole (H3DBPT) to bridge hexanuclear {Cd6} clusters. The host material exhibits ligand-based photoluminescence and solvent-dependent fluorescent intensities, which could selectively detect nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) and 4-nitroaniline (4-NA). The most striking property of 1 is the remarkable sensitivity and selectivity toward TNP and 4-NA even in the presence of other NACs of nitrobenzene (NB), which can be attributed to a photoinduced electron transfer mechanism and resonance energy transfer mechanism. Their photoluminescence quenching could be detected at very low concentrations of 1.14 and 0.70 ppm, respectively, and the maximum quenching efficiencies were found to be 98% and 95%, respectively, at 0.08 mM. Significantly, compound 1 also exhibits excellent sensing performance toward nitroimidazole-based drug molecules of ornidazole (ONZ), metronidazoles (MNZ), dimetridazole (DMZ), and 2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole (2-M-5-MZ), which represents one of the rare MOFs-based fluorescent sensors for simultaneous selective detecting drug molecules and NACs. Their photoluminescence quenching efficiencies increase drastically with the analyte amount even in the low concentration range (<0.15 mM) and reach nearly complete quenching (>95%). The remarkable chemical stability and the unusual sensing performance make this Cd-based MOF a promising multiresponsive sensory material for chemical sensing of NACs and nitroimidazole-based drugs.

Abstract:The metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), {[Cd(L)(H2O)]CH3OHDMF} (1) and [Pb(L)(DMF)] (2) (L = 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde nicotinoylhydrazone), were synthesized and characterized using microanalyses, IR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Single crystal X-ray analyses revealed that both 1 and 2 exhibit 2D grid networks. The photoluminescence investigation indicates that 1 and 2 could be a prospective candidate for developing luminescencent sensors for the selective sensing of nitrobenzene, which is used as a precursor for explosives. The luminescent properties of 1 and 2 in different solvents were investigated and corroborated by theoretical calculations. Additionally compounds 1 and 2 also show selective sensing ability for Fe3+ as well as for CrO42- ions.

Abstract:Two Zn2+-based luminescent metal–organic frameworks containing the same components, {[Zn(TIPA)pim0.5]2H2O·NO3}n (1) and {[Zn(TIPA)(pim)]3H2O}n (2) have been synthesized based on a π-electron rich semi-rigid triangular ligand TIPA (TIPA = tris(4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)-phenyl)amine and H2pim = pimelic acid). 1 is a two-fold interpenetrating 3D framework containing four chiral (10,3)-a subnets, and 2 is merely a 2D + 2D → 2D entangled network, although they were synthesized from the same starting materials. A photoluminescence investigation revealed that the emissions of 1 and 2 entirely originate from the intraligands charge transfer transitions (π → π*). Metal–organic framework 1 can be applied as a dual functional chemical sensor for nitroaromatic (NAC) compounds and antibiotics detection with a high sensitivity and quick response. In addition, the effective detection of nitroaromatic compounds and antibiotics was rationalized by the density functional theory (DFT) calculation of the energy bands of the NAC compounds and antibiotics, which revealed that a photoinduced electron transfer mechanism is largely responsible for the sensing of nitroaromatic compounds, and the resonance energy transfer is largely responsible for the exclusive sensing of ofloxacin (OFX).

Abstract:A microporous metal–organic framework (MOF) Eu3(MFDA)4(NO3)(DMF)3 (1, H2MFDA = 9,9-dimethylfluorene-2,7-dicarboxylic acid) has been solvothermally synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1 is a three-dimensional coordination polymer with pcu type rod-packing structure, through which 1D rhombic channels penetrate. The solvent-free form 1a could be obtained by direct heating of 1. Both 1 and 1a exhibit high intensity red light emissions with high quantum yields and long luminescence lifetimes when excited at 336 nm at ambient temperature. The potential of 1a for nitro explosive sensing is studied through luminescence quenching experiments, which show that 1a is a potential luminescent sensory material for nitro explosives.

Abstract:2,6-pyridine dicarboxylic acid (DPA) is an exceptional biomarker of notorious anthrax spores. Therefore, the rapid, sensitive, and selective quantitative detection of DPA is extremely significant and urgent. This paper reports a Zn(II) metal–organic framework with the formula of {[Zn6(NDA)6(DPBT)3] 2H2O·3DMF}n (MOF-1), which consists of 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (2,6-NDA), 4,7-di(4-pyridyl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole (DPBT), and Zn(II) ions. Structural analysis indicated that MOF-1 is a three-dimensional (3D) network which crystallized in the monoclinic system with the C2/c space group, revealing high pH, solvent, and thermal stability. Luminescence sensing studies demonstrated that MOF-1 had the potential to be a highly selective, sensitive, and recyclable fluorescence sensor for the identification of DPA. Furthermore, fluorescent test paper was made to detect DPA promptly with color changes. The enhancement mechanism was established by the hydrogen-bonding interaction and photoinduced electron transfer transition between MOF-1 and DPA molecules.

Facile Fabrication of an AIE-Active Metal–Organic Framework for Sensitive Detection of Explosives in Liquid and Solid Phases

Abstract:Nowadays, the practical applications of metal–organic framework (MOF)-based fluorescence detectors are severely hindered because of the complex synthesis process of linkers or heavy metal contamination. The development of a simple, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly fluorescence sensing system remains a huge challenge. In this study, we designed and synthesized a γ-CD-MOF-K complex using the facile in situ encapsulation method. The unique pore structure of γ-CD-MOF allowed it to effectively include TPE and explosives as guests simultaneously. The γ-CD-MOF-K showed stronger fluorescence emission than TPE and sensitive fluorescence quenching activities in response to nitro-aromatic compounds in the liquid phase with detection limits as low as 3 ppm. Furthermore, γ-CD-MOF-K can also effectively detect nitro-aromatic compounds in the solid state, which is very convenient for practical detection of explosives. Abstract:Two new luminescent metal–organic coordination polymers (MOCPs) of {[Zn6(L)2(H2O)7]·(DMF)2}n (1) and {[Zn(H4L)(bpy)0.5(H2O)2]·H2O}n (2) were solvothermally constructed using zinc salts and ligands (H6L = 5,5′-(propane-2,2-diyl)bis(2-hydroxyisophthalic acid), bpy = 4,4′-bipyridine). The resulted MOCPs were characterized by elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Single-crystal X-ray study results reveal that compounds 1 and 2 belong to P 1¯ and P 21/n space group and show a two- and one-dimensional structure, respectively. Their photoluminescence (PL) properties and thermal properties were also studied. Interestingly, the luminescent responses of compounds 1 and 2 show highly sensitive detection of Fe3+ via an obvious fluorescence quenching. The detection limits of compounds 1 and 2 are 0.25 μM and 0.19 μM toward Fe3+. Compound 2 possesses a ring structure, which is big enough to allow small molecules to easily move into the crystal skeleton and interact with each other. Thus, the luminescence responses of compound 2 were investigated for various organic solvents. These results show that compound 2 has great potential to be developed as the favorable sensor for highly selective detection of nitrobenzene.

Abstract:In this work we report two zinc (II) complexes, namely {[Zn(L)(dca)](0.5CH3OH)}n (1) and [Zn2(L)2(N3)2] (2), (where HL = 1-((2-pyridylmethyl)iminomethyl)-2-naphthol, dca = dicyanoamide anion) that have been structurally characterized by spectroscopic technique and X-ray single crystal diffraction.Structural analysis showed for complex 1 an undulated polymer with Zn(L) units connected by bridging dca anions, while 2isa dinuclear complex where the azide anions are monodentate and end-on coordinated. The emission properties of both complexes have been studied in various organic solvents, and among them,nitrobenzene attracts attention due to its significant quenched effect. Abstract:A novel metal-organic framework {[In 3 (TATAT) 2 ]·3CH 3 NH 3 ·7NMF·8H 2 O}[JLU-MOF101, H 6 TATAT=5,5′,5′′-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl) tris-(azanediyl)triisophthalate, NMF= N -methylformamide] with cor topology has been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. The framework of JLU-MOF101 is constructed by {In(COO) 4 } − nodes and a hexacarboxylic organic ligand. JLU-MOF101 exhibits excellent fluorescence properties in N, N -dimethylformamide(DMF) solution, and its emission spectrum can be greatly overlapped with the ultraviolet absorption spectra of trinitrophenol(TNP) and 2,4-dinitrophenol(2,4-DNP). As a result, JLU-MOF101 exhibits excellent performance of fluorescence quenching for TNP and 2,4-DNP. In addition, we demonstrate the selective detection capability of JLU-MOF101 through a large number of anti-interference tests.
