Abstract:Herein, a simple assembly was designed via a capillary and a funnel-like cap to achieve liquid-gas compound pendant drop (CPD) microextraction with great convenience. Due to the increased contact area and adhesion force between the capillary tip and the drop, the proposed method provides considerable flexibility in producing CPDs with different air bubble sizes. Four pesticides were chosen as model analytes to evaluate the proposed method. By using a 1 μL chlorobenzene droplet containing a 1 μL air bubble at a stirring rate of 700 rpm, a 70 to 135-fold enrichment of pesticides was obtained within 3.4 minutes. As compared with a typical SDME, the proposed method showed a 2-fold increase of enrichment factors and a 4-fold decrease of extraction time. Improvement of the extraction efficiency could be ascribed to the increased surface area of the droplet, and the thin film phenomena further improved the extraction kinetics through effective agitation. The results indicate that CPD microextraction could serve as a promising sample pretreatment method for automated high-throughput analyses in a wide variety of research areas.

Abstract:An innovative and versatile microextraction technique based on nanoconfined solvent on carbon nanofibers has been conceived, realized, optimized, and presented here. The extraction capabilities of this technique toward polar, medium polar, and/or nonpolar substances can be easily modulated based on the nanoconfined solvent used. The so-called nanoconfined liquid phase nanoextraction showed excellent characteristics in terms of extraction recoveries, extraction time (<= 1 min), reliability, and versatility. A needle-tip device has been realized on the base of this extraction process to allow direct extraction procedures and minimally invasive testing: this device guarantees a safe insertion in aqueous or soft samples, and it allows a fast and minimally invasive analyte extraction. Due to its versatility, chemical stability, and mechanical flexibility, nanoconfined liquid phase nanoextraction can be considered a powerful candidate for high-throughput analyses of biological samples.

Abstract:The invention relates to an agitated-film microextraction device and a microextraction method, which are mainly used to separate and enrich target substance in complex aqueous solution sample and belong to the technical field of analyzed chemical sample preprocessing. The agitated-film microextraction device comprises a magnetic clip and a porous film envelop, molecularly imprinted polymer is loaded in the porous film envelop, and the porous film envelop is fixed on the magnetic clip. In the process of extraction, after being impregnated in organic solvent, the porous film envelop is fixed on the magnetic clip, and is put into sample solution and agitated, and the target substance in the sample passes through the organic phase-impregnated porous film to reach the organic phase in the film, and is selectively adsorbed on the molecularly imprinted polymer. The microextraction device has the advantages of simple preparation, low cost, convenient use, high enrichment factor, good selectivity and repetitive use, and can be used to separate and enrich target substance in complex aqueous solution sample.

Abstract:<p>Preconcentration is key for detection from an extremely low concentration solution, but requires separation steps from a large volume of samples using extracting solvents. Here, a simple approach is presented for ultrafast and sensitive microanalysis from a tiny volume of aqueous solutions. In this approach, liquid–liquid nanoextraction in an evaporating thin liquid film on a spinning substrate is coupled with quantitative analysis in one step. The approach is exemplified using a liquid mixture comprising a target compound to be analyzed in water, mixed with extractant oil and co‐solvent ethanol. With rapid evaporation of ethanol, nanodroplets of oil form spontaneously in the film. The compounds are highly concentrated by liquid evaporation and meanwhile extracted to nanodroplets. A detection limit of nanomolar to picomolar is demonstrated for fluorescent model compounds in only ≈5 µL of solution with the entire process taking ≈10 s. The combination of nanoextraction and infrared microscopy also enables simultaneous chemical identification. The dynamics of thin film evaporation are revealed using fast imaging. The principle behind this approach is general, providing a powerful technique for fast and sensitive chemical analysis of a vast library of compounds for environment monitoring, national security, early diagnosis, and many other applications.</p>

Abstract:This paper demonstrates a novel drop-to-drop liquid-liquid micro-extraction (DTD-LLME) device, which is based on an electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) digital microfluidic chip. Droplets of two immiscible liquids, one of which is an ionic liquid, are formed in nanoliter volumes, driven along electrodes, merged and mixed for extraction, and finally separated upon the completion of the extraction process. All the steps are carried out on a microfluidic chip using combined electrowetting and dielectrophoretic forces, which act on the droplet upon the application of electric potential. Specially, the phase separation of two immiscible nanoliter-scale liquid drops was achieved for the first time on an EWOD digital microfluidic chip. To study the on-chip extraction kinetics, an image-based concentration measurement technique with suitable color parameters was studied and compared with the typical UV absorption based technique. Finally, the effect of applied ac voltage frequency on the extraction kinetics was studied. The observations on DTD-LLME, particularly phase separation, are discussed. The image-based method was found to be applicable for precise concentration measurements with the right choice of the color parameter. Results from experiments on finding the frequency dependence on extraction kinetics demonstrate that the application of higher frequencies can be a factor in accelerating the extraction on the proposed microextraction device.

Abstract:A simple and novel method of directly suspended droplet microextraction (DSDME) combined with single drop back-extraction prior to capillary electrophoresis (CE) measurement is developed. In this technique, DSDME was firstly carried out under the maximum stirring rate for a desired time. Then, an aqueous droplet as back-extractive phase suspended at the needle tip was immersed in droplet of organic phase for back-extracted. After extraction, the aqueous droplet was transferred into a suitable vial and injected into CE for analysis. Three alkaloids were selected as model compounds for developing and evaluating the method performance. Under the optimum conditions, the enrichment factors ranged from 231 to 524. The relative standard deviations for five replicates were in the range of 4.8–8.1%. The calibration graph was linear in the range of 20–1000ngmL−1 yielding correlation coefficients higher than 0.9983. The limit of detections varied from 8.1 to 14.1ngmL−1. Human urine samples were spiked with three alkaloids standard to assess the matrix effects and satisfactory results were obtained. The advantages of this method are simplicity of operation, rapid detection, low cost, high enrichment factor and little solvent consumption.

Abstract:Single-drop microextraction (SDME) has become a very popular liquid-phase microextraction technique because it is inexpensive, easy to operate and nearly solvent-free. Essentially, SDME combines extraction (and conceivably, cleanup) and concentration in a minimum number of steps, and thereafter, direct extract introduction into an analytical system. In this review, in order to encourage further development of SDME, we focus on its recent developments in its various guises. Its applications when used in combination with different analytical techniques, such as gas chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry, capillary electrophoresis, mass spectrometry and electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry, are summarized. SDME does have some limitations, and these are also discussed as well. Finally, an outlook on the future of the technique is given.

Abstract:Induced phase separation extraction (IPSE) is an efficient sample clean-up technique that can replace liquid-liquid extraction (LLE). The purpose of this study was to miniaturize IPSE by carrying it out in a microfluidic chip. An IPSE chip was designed and evaluated for its ability to separate and purify samples on a microscale. The 5 × 2 cm chip was fed with a solution of polar to non-polar model compounds in acetonitrile-water (1:1). In the 100 μm wide and 40 μm deep microchannels, the sample solution was efficiently separated into two immiscible phases by adding a hydrophobic solvent as inducer. Analytes present in the sample solution each migrated to their own favorable phase upon phase separation. After optimization, extraction and fractionation were easily and efficiently achieved. The behavior of analytes with a pH-dependent partitioning could be influenced by adjusting the pH of the sample solution. Scutellaria baicalensis extract, used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), was successfully separated in aglycones and glycosides. In this microscale system, the sample and solvent consumption is reduced to microliters, while the time needed for the sample pretreatment is less than one minute. Additionally, the extraction efficiency can reach up to 98.8%, and emulsion formation is avoided.

Abstract:A sample pre-concentration method based on the in-line coupling of in-tube solid-phase microextraction and electrophoretic sweeping was developed for the analysis of hydrophobic compounds. The sample pre-concentration and electrophoretic separation processes were simply and sequentially carried out with a (35%-phenyl)-methylpolysiloxane-coated capillary. The developed method was validated and applied to enrich and separate several pharmaceuticals including loratadine, indomethacin, ibuprofen and doxazosin. Several parameters of microextration were investigated such as temperature, pH and eluant. And the concentration of microemulsion that influences separation efficiency and microextraction efficiency were also studied. Central composite design was applied for the optimization of sampling flow rate and sampling time that interact in a very complex way with each other. The precision, sensitivity and recovery of the method were investigated. Under the optimal conditions, the maximum enrichment factors for loratadine, indomethacin, ibuprofen and doxazosin in aqueous solutions are 1355, 571, 523 and 318, respectively. In addition, the developed method was applied to determine loratadine in rabbit blood sample.

Abstract:Microfluidic devices provide ideal environments to study solvent extraction. When droplets form and generate plug flow down the microfluidic channel, the device acts as a microreactor in which the kinetics of chemical reactions and interfacial transfer can be examined. Here, we present a methodology that combines chemometric analysis with online micro-Raman spectroscopy to monitor biphasic extractions within a microfluidic device. Among the many benefits of microreactors is the ability to maintain small sample volumes, which is especially important when studying solvent extraction in harsh environments, such as in separations related to the nuclear fuel cycle. In solvent extraction, the efficiency of the process depends on complex formation and rates of transfer in biphasic systems. Thus, it is important to understand the kinetic parameters in an extraction system to maintain a high efficiency and effectivity of the process. This monitoring provided concentration measurements in both organic and aqueous plugs as they were pumped through the microfluidic channel. The biphasic system studied was comprised of HNO3 as the aqueous phase and 30% (v/v) tributyl phosphate in n-dodecane comprised the organic phase, which simulated the plutonium uranium reduction extraction (PUREX) process. Using pre-equilibrated solutions (post extraction), the validity of the technique and methodology is illustrated. Following this validation, solutions that were not equilibrated were examined and the kinetics of interfacial mass transfer within the biphasic system were established. Kinetic results of extraction were compared to kinetics already determined on a macro scale to prove the efficacy of the technique.

Abstract:A robust and simple approach for microfluidic liquid-liquid (L-L) extraction at the subnanoliter-scale was developed for on-chip sample pretreatment. Organic solvent droplets of a few hundred pL were trapped within micro recesses fabricated in the channel walls of a microfabricated glass chip. L-L extraction was performed by delivering aqueous samples through the channel, with the sample stream continuously flowing adjacent to the droplets. The analytes in aqueous streams were enriched within the droplet with high preconcentration factors owing to both phase transfer and dissolution of organic solvent into the bypassing aqueous sample. An aqueous solution of butyl rhodamine B (BRB) and 1-hexanol were used, respectively, as sample and extractant to demonstrate the performance of the system. The fluorescence intensity of the dye extracted into the droplet was monitored in situ by LIF. The system proved to be an efficient means for achieving high enrichment factors of over 1000, with sample consumption of a few microL. Quantitative measurement of the extracted analyte was achieved with a linear response in the range 1 x 10(-9)-8 x 10(-7) M BRB. The precision of the measured fluorescence values for a 10(-7) M BRB standard with a 12.5 min preconcentration period was 6.6% RSD (n = 5).

Abstract:An extraction technique for analytical sample preparation in aqueous solution has been developed based on controlling dispersion of ionic surfactant assemblies. An extraction technique was realized based on controlling dispersion of the ionic surfactant assemblies in their isotachophoretic migration during the extraction by arranging the solutions of leading electrolyte, ionic surfactant and terminating electrolyte in order and applying voltage. Potential of the technique for analytical sample preparation in aqueous solution has been demonstrated by extracting a model sample of four alkylphenones, which were analyzed by HPLC after the extraction. The extraction showed concentration effects on all the four alkylphenones of butyrophenone, valerophenone, hexanophenone and heptanophenone in the model sample. The enrichment factors were 5.29, 7.70, 7.25 and 7.49 for the four alkylphenones of butyrophenone, valerophenone, hexanophenone and heptanophenone, respectively. Linear relationship was obtained with all the four alkylphenones between their chromatographic peak areas before and after the extraction in the range of concentration from 0.05ppm to 1.5ppm. The RSD of the chromatographic peak areas in triplicate extractions was 7.97%, 3.75%, 2.91% and 4.45% for butyrophenone, valerophenone, hexanophenone and heptanophenone, respectively. Advantages of the extraction technique developed include ease of operation, low reagent cost, no consumption of organic solvents and no requirement for additional phase separation.
On-line combination of single-drop liquid-liquid-liquid microextraction with capillary electrophoresis for sample cleanup and preconcentration: a simple and efficient approach to determining trace analyte in real matrices.

Abstract:In order to improve the sensitivity of capillary electrophoresis (CE) and overcome the deficiency of commercial CE instruments in handling complex matrices directly, we proposed a novel technique which combined single-drop liquid–liquid–liquid microextraction (SD-LLLME) with CE on-line. In this technique, SD-LLLME was realized using a commercial CE instrument and, to further concentrate the target analyte, large-volume sample stacking combined sweeping without polarity switching was utilized. Even though without agitating the donor phase in the extraction process, the model compound, adenine was enriched 550-fold in only 10min. The enrichment factors were 760 and 1030 when the extraction time was extended to 30 and 60min, respectively. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of adenine were 5.24% and 2.29% for peak area and migration time, respectively, which indicated that this method was much more reproducible compared to the existing methods that combined sample-preparation strategies with CE. In addition, this approach was selective while cleaning up target analyte. These mentioned advantages allowed the developed method to be an attractive approach to determining trace target compounds in complex real samples.
Nanoextraction based on surface nanodroplets for chemical preconcentration and determination

Abstract:Liquid-liquid extraction based on surface nanodroplets, namely nanoextraction, can continuously extract and enrich target analytes from the flow of a sample solution. This sample preconcentration technique is easy to operate in a continuous flow system with low organic solvent consumption and a high enrichment factor. In this review, the evolution from single drop microextraction to advanced nanoextraction will be briefly introduced. Also, the formation principle and key features of surface nanodroplets will be summarized. Further, the major findings of nanoextraction combined with in-droplet chemistry toward sensitive and quantitative detection will be discussed. Finally, we will give our perspectives on the future trend of nanoextraction.

Automated Ionic Liquid Dispersive Liquid-Liquid Microextraction on a Centrifugal Microfluidic Platform

Abstract:We aim to develop an automated platform to preconcentrate and separate trace-level substances in water sample, especially using ionic liquids as environmentallyfriendly extractants. For the first time, automatically saltcontrolled ionic liquid dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction on a centrifugal microfluidic platform is introduced. Red dye is chosen as a surrogate analyte to validate this method. The entire liquid transport and mixing process is controlled by rotation speed, siphon valves and capillary valves. Still frame images on the integrated compact disc are collected during the experiment to show detailed steps of the process, which consist of mixing, siphon priming, transportation between chambers, separation and collection. The red dye preconcentration results are clearly demonstrated and observable with the naked eye. Abstract:In this work, a novel approach for miniaturized liquid-liquid (L-L) extraction was developed. Nanoextraction from a flow of a highly diluted solution for much-improved sensitivity in offline chemical detection and quantification

Abstract:Preconcentration of the target compound is a critical step that ensures the accuracy of the subsequent chemical analysis. In this work, we present a straightforward yet effective liquid-liquid extraction approach based on surface nanodroplets (i.e., nanoextraction) for offline analysis of highly diluted sample solutions. The extraction and sample collection were streamlined in a 3-m microcapillary tube. The concentration of the target analyte in surface nanodroplets was significantly increased compared to the concentration in the sample solution, reaching several orders of magnitudes. A limit of detection (LOD) was decreased by a factor of $\sim 10^3$ for an organic model compound in Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) measurements and $\sim 10^5$ for a model fluorescent dye in fluorescence detection. The quantitative analysis of the organic compound was also achieved in a wide concentration region from $10^{-3}$ M to $10^{-4}$ M. The total volume of surface nanodroplets can be manipulated to further enhance extraction efficiency, according to the principle that governs droplet formation by solvent exchange. Additionally, our method exhibited significantly improved sensitivity compared to traditional dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME). The LOD of the fluorescent dye and the organic model compound obtained with DLLME was 3 orders of magnitude and 20 times higher than the LOD achieved through nanoextraction approach. The nanoextraction developed in this work can be applied to preconcentrate multi-compounds from river water samples, without clear interference from each other. This can further extend its applicability for the detection and quantification of target analytes in complex aqueous samples by common analytical instruments.

Abstract:A microdroplet-based continuous countercurrent extraction process with a high phase ratio (60–110) is proposed in this work. A countercurrent extraction apparatus containing a cross-flow T-junction microdisperser and a milli-scale column was established, and phenol extracted from water and transferred to n-octanol was used as the model system. The diameters of the microdroplets formed by the microdisperser were studied, and these ranged from 160 to 220 μm with a uniform diameter distribution and a relative standard deviation of < 15%. The hold-ups of the two phases in the countercurrent column were investigated, and a prediction model was established. The effects of the experimental parameters, namely, the circulation ratio, flow rate, phase ratio, and column length, on the extraction efficiency, volumetric mass transfer coefficient (Koa), and theoretical stage were studied. The value of Koa ranged from 0.087 to 0.352 s−1 within the scope of the experiment, and the theoretical stage value of 2 was achieved with a column height of only 25 cm under certain conditions, indicating a higher mass transfer efficiency compared with traditional devices. The mechanism of mass transfer intensification was discussed and identified to be dependent on the microscale diameter and uniform diameter distribution of the droplets.
