Abstract:Using enhanced land surface temperatures (LSTs) image retrieved from Landsat ETM+, this article shows that thermal information associated with faults have been detected. These anomalies may be provided by geothermal natural convection through faults and partially influence the ground surface thermal environment. The study area in southern segment of Longmen Mountains thrust belt of Western Sichuan Basin contains complex faults and folds with recent earthquake activity. In order to study the faults for future oil exploration, we use LST data retrieved from Landsat thermal infrared band to detect the thermal information associated with faults. The LSTs are enhanced by filtering out anthropogenic activity and influence land cover classes, and interpolating to contour map. The spatial patterns of the enhanced images revealed the spatial correspondence between the thermal information and the dip planes of faults when compared with the explanation profiles and geologic features obtained from the 3D-seismic geophysical data. The thermal-affected ranges calculated and the statistically significant of regression model also indicate the result that the thermal information located near the faults are consistent with the faults' dip planes. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:It is essential to investigate soil hydro-thermal behavior to reduce the potential damage to geotechnical constructions caused by varying climatic conditions. In this work, an in-situ monitoring station was built on a clay slope with high groundwater table, situated in Yixing, China. Ten SMT-100 sensors were instrumented on the site to record the evolutions of soil temperature and volumetric water content at various depths. Meteorological information, including relative humidity, air temperature, rainfall, wind speed and solar radiation, and slope runoff was collected. A numerical investigation was also conducted to analyze the variations of soil hydro-thermal response to the recorded climatic conditions by combing coupled hydro-thermal model and soil-atmosphere interaction model. The profiles of soil temperature and volumetric water content suggest that the diurnal changes are limited to depths <40 cm, and the seasonal changes are usually approaching a location deeper than 120 cm. Soil heterogeneity can affect its hydro-thermal response, e.g., higher volumetric water content was observed at the points with lower dry density, which is mainly related to soil water retention capacity. However, appropriate theoretical models to consider soil heterogeneity in the description of soil hydro-thermal properties need to be further investigated.

Spatiotemporal Variation of River Temperature As a Predictor of Groundwater/surface-Water Interactions in an Arid Watershed in China

Abstract:Interactions between groundwater and surface water in arid regions are complex, and recharge–discharge processes are often influenced by the hydrological regime, climate and geology. Traditional methods such as hydraulic gradient measuring by piezometers, differential discharge gauging and conservative tracer experiments, are often inadequate to capture the spatial and temporal variation of exchange rates. In this study, the distribution and the size of the overall groundwater inflow zone (GIZ) and the hyporheic inflow zone (HIZ) in the middle Heihe River Basin, northwest China, are characterized, and the relative inflow flux is estimated by high-resolution temperature measurements. Distributed temperature sensing (DTS) was used to measure the mixing temperatures of a 5-km reach of streambed with a spatial resolution of 0.5 m. The sampling interval was 0.25 m, and the temporal interval was 15 and 10 min at Pingchuan and Banqiao experimental sites, respectively. Two separate measurement periods in Pingchuan (Ping1, Ping2) captured different meteorological and stream-flow conditions. The results show that the number and the size range of the individual HIZs are greater than those of GIZs. Groundwater upwelling (GIZ) causes a larger decrease in river-water temperature with less inflow flux compared with the HIZ. The distribution pattern of HIZs and GIZs is influenced by the hydrodynamics of the river and the hydraulic permeability of the riverbed. High-resolution temperature variation based on DTS is an effective predictor of distributed inflows from groundwater upwelling and hyporheic exchange in an arid region.
Water Flux Characterization Through Hydraulic Head and Temperature Data Assimilation: Numerical Modeling and Sandbox Experiments

Abstract:Spatial distribution of groundwater recharge/discharge fluxes has an important impact on mass and energy exchanges in shallow streambeds. During the last two decades, extensive studies have been devoted to the quantification of one-dimensional (1-D) vertical exchange fluxes. Nevertheless, few studies were conducted to characterize two-dimensional (2-D) heterogeneous flux fields that commonly exist in real-world cases. In this study, we used an iterative ensemble smoother (IES) to quantify the spatial distribution of 2-D exchange fluxes by assimilating hydraulic head and temperature measurements. Four assimilation scenarios corresponding to different potential field applications were tested. In the first three scenarios, the heterogeneous hydraulic conductivity fields were first inferred from hydraulic head and/or temperature measurements, and then the flux fields were derived through Darcy's law using the estimated conductivity fields. In the fourth scenario, the flux fields were estimated directly from the temperature measurements, which is more efficient and especially suitable for the situation that a complete knowledge of flow boundary conditions is unavailable. We concluded that, the best estimation could be achieved through jointly assimilating hydraulic head and temperature measurements, and temperature data were superior to the head data when they were used independently. Overall, the IES method provided more robust and accurate vertical flux estimations than those given by the widely used analytical solution-based methods. Furthermore, IES gave reasonable uncertainty estimations, which were unavailable in traditional methods. Since temperature can be accurately monitored with high spatial and temporal resolutions, the coupling of heat tracing techniques and IES provides promising potential in quantifying complex exchange fluxes under field conditions. Abstract:Although the enhanced thermal response test (ETRT) method has been used to determine the distribution of ground temperatures and effective thermal conductivities, there are a number of obstacles which limit the wide application of this technology in the discipline of geoengineering. In this literature, four aspects of ETRT technology were investigated: (a) acquisition of ground temperature, (b) installation of the heat exchange tubes, (c) optimization of the monitoring positions, and (d) the difference in thermal conductivity obtained by the ETRT and numerical simulation. To investigate these issues, a field trial was carried out in Heze, Shandong Province, China, and the corresponding numerical models were built. The results demonstrate that: (i) the conventional methods that infer undisturbed ground temperature using water in tubes have large errors, whereas the distributed temperature sensing (DTS) technique enables the measurement of precise temperature profiles; (ii) the thermal conductivity measured using double U-tubes reflects the soil thermal property more accurately than that for a single U-tube; (iii) it is more reasonable to install optical fibers outside the U-tube sidewall than inside the observation tube; and (iv) it is essential to quantitatively consider various interface thermal impedance when estimating ground thermal conductivities using numerical simulation.

Abstract:The distribution of shallow ground temperature field is controlled by the complex water-heat coupling effects of surface temperature, shallow groundwater temperature, and groundwater flow. An indoor medium-scale model box was established to explore the variation law of the shallow ground temperature field in the process of water-heat coupling between subsurface water and groundwater by using various temperature sensors. Based on this test, a two-dimensional numerical simulation was carried out with FEFLOW. The analysis combining the test and simulation results showed that distributed optical fiber monitoring can effectively monitor the temperature field. Additionally, the temperature data can be calibrated by FBG and PT100 sensors that are available to recognize the distribution of ground temperature field accurately. The groundwater flow plays an important role in the variation of temperature field; the evolutionary tendency of temperature field has roughly the same performance in soil layers as long as they share the same permeability and thermal properties. Thus, different characteristic layers will affect the distribution of seepage field, further controlling the temperature field. Finally, this work can be potentially used to quantitatively evaluate the storage potential of shallow geothermal energy at the city scale.

However, it is still challenging to measure in-situ TH parameters with high spatiotemporal resolution and accuracy. Herein, a fiber optic sensing system was developed by combining actively heated fiber Bragg grating (AH-FBG) and artificial neural network (ANN) technologies, which enables continuous measurement of spatiotemporal variations in TH parameters of in-situ soil. Geotechnical instrumentation was conducted on the Loess Plateau, China, by using the newly developed system. Analyses of 9-month monitoring data allow us to pinpoint diverse patterns of TH behaviors of seasonally frozen loess at various depths and water migration stages. The significant impacts of ice-water phase change, latent heat, and heat convection on heat and mass transport in loess are especially demonstrated. The air temperature was further identified as the main atmospheric factor for characterizing TH behaviors in partially frozen loess, while both rainfall and air temperature have dual effects in unfrozen loess. The field investigation here presents an early attempt to acquire TH parameters of in-situ loess considering the moisture and temperature inhomogeneity. The findings in this study offer unique insights into land–atmosphere interactions, providing valuable information for deciphering triggers of potential geohazards.

Abstract:Abstract. The alpine region is important in riverine and watershed ecosystems as a contributor of freshwater, providing and stimulating specific habitats for biodiversity. In parallel, recent climate change, human activities and other perturbations may disturb hydrological processes and eco-functions, creating the need for next-generation observational and modeling approaches to advance a predictive understanding of such processes in the alpine region. However, several formidable challenges, including the cold and harsh climate, high altitude and complex topography, inhibit complete and consistent data collection where and when it is needed, which hinders the development of remote-sensing technologies and alpine hydrological models. The current study presents a suite of datasets consisting of long-term hydrometeorological, snow cover and frozen-ground data for investigating watershed science and functions from an integrated, distributed and multiscale observation network in the upper reaches of the Heihe River Basin (HRB) in China. Meteorological and hydrological data were monitored from an observation network connecting a group of automatic meteorological stations (AMSs). In addition, to capture snow accumulation and ablation processes, snow cover properties were collected from a snow observation superstation using state-of-the-art techniques and instruments. High-resolution soil physics datasets were also obtained to capture the freeze–thaw processes from a frozen-ground observation superstation. The updated datasets were released to scientists with multidisciplinary backgrounds (i.e., cryospheric science, hydrology and meteorology), and they are expected to serve as a testing platform to provide accurate forcing data and validate and evaluate remote-sensing products and hydrological models for a broader community. An in situ observation dataset of soil hydraulic properties and soil moisture in a high and cold mountainous area on the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Abstract:Abstract. Soil hydraulic properties (SHPs) and soil moisture (SM) are fundamental to describing and predicting water and energy cycles at the land surface, and for regulating evapotranspiration, infiltration and runoff. However, information about these soil properties from existing datasets is often scarce and inaccurate for high and cold mountainous areas such as the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), which hampers our understanding of hydrological and energy cycle processes over large mountainous areas like the QTP. Based on soil profile data at depths of 5 cm and 25 cm from 238 sampling sites, and on soil data from 32 SM monitoring stations at depths of 5 cm, 15 cm, 25 cm, 40 cm, and 60 cm, we have compiled a SHP and SM dataset for a high and cold mountainous area, Northeastern QTP. We used this dataset to explore the large-scale spatial and temporal variability of SHPs and of SM across the study area. Our evaluation of several existing SHP datasets, SM datasets derived from remote-sensing, reanalysis and data assimilation, showed that SHPs (soil texture, bulk density, and soil saturated hydraulic conductivity) in these datasets are biased, and do not capture the spatial variability recorded in the in-situ observations. When comparing with the in-situ SM observations, the SM product derived from remote-sensing was more reliable than the SM product derived from reanalysis data (which had a higher bias), and than the data assimilation product (which did not capture SM temporal variability). The in situ observation dataset presented here provides unique and important information about the SHP variability and long-term SM trends at a large-scale, high and cold mountainous area, and thus offers opportunity for further understanding of water cycle and energy exchange processes over the QTP.

Abstract:Water temperature is a critically important parameter for characterizing aquatic ecosystem, particularly in hydrodynamic processes produced by human activities or climate effects in shallow water regions (oceanic pasture, tidal currents, upwelling currents, etc.). The variation of water temperature is a slight and slow process, as technology advances, high-precision observation of the spatial and temporal variation of water temperature on 3-D scale is crucial to environmental research and predictions. To address this issue, 3-D water temperature field is reconstructed by coastal acoustic tomography technology and inversion water temperature variations are obtained. A multiacoustic station experiment was conducted in a reservoir in Changsha, China, from March 4, 2022 to March 5, 2022. Two grid-averaged 3-D inversion methods (Lagrangian-least-squares method and improved-Landweber iteration method) with multistation underwater sensing network are processed to reveal water temperature fluctuations. The rotated empirical orthogonal function is used to further analyze and evaluate the sensitivity of temperature variations in the individual spatial grids. In this article, water temperature distribution and dynamic variation process in the whole spatial structure are obtained and discussed using 3-D sound transmission information, and the feasibility of the methods is verified by comparing them with temperature depth sensor array observation results. This study provides high-precision ideas and methods for 3-D water temperature activities of underwater acoustic tomography network in shallow environments.

Ensemble Learning-Aided Hydrothermal Coupling Investigation on Dam Impoundment Impact: A Case Study of the Xiluodu Project in China

Abstract:AbstractThe monitoring and analysis of the temperature field in the reservoir area is gaining importance as it provides insights regarding structural safety and environmental impact. Most studies focus on earthen dams and the seasonal fluctuation of the thermal field induced by the ambient temperature. Few studies analyse the long-term trend of the bedrock temperature after high-arch dam impoundment as the involved geological elements are likely to be unexpected and unknown. In this paper, a unique geothermal evolution model in the downstream bedrock of a 285.5 m high-arch dam is reported based on continuous field observations during the past nine years, which cannot be explained by available hydrogeological data. To clarify the phenomenon, a research framework that comprises field measurements, machine learning interpretation, and hydrothermal coupling simulation is proposed. Borehole surveys and water chemistry analyses are performed to gather more data from critical areas. The proposed machine learning pipelines attempt to interpret the field test data. These are integrated with a double-loop grid-search process and can achieve hyperparameter searching and model evaluation simultaneously. It proves to be robust to local minima and more applicable to groundwater source discrimination when compared to other models. The contribution of the newly discovered features is further discussed through comparative and sensitivity analysis based on the hydrothermal coupling theory. With the proposed hybrid analysis framework, the shallow buried limestones and the confined hot groundwater have been identified as the causes of the unique phenomenon. These factors should be of concern to researchers facing similar situation in the future.
Analysis of the Scale Effect and Temporal Stability of Groundwater in a Large Irrigation District in Northwest China

Abstract:The depth to groundwater table (DGT) and the stability sites of groundwater were closely related parameters in groundwater research. Controlling the DGT and identifying stability sites of DGT were of great significance to prevent soil salinization and improve groundwater monitoring. In this study, using DGT data from the Hetao Irrigation District (HID) from 1991 to 2015, combined with spatial interpolation and coefficient-of-variation methods, this study explored the spatiotemporal variation characteristics and scale-effect problems of DGT from four hierarchical scales: the irrigation district, irrigation subdistrict, main canal, and branch canal. The Spearman correlation coefficient, average relative difference, and standard deviation were also used to further clarify the characteristics of groundwater time stability and its periodic variation rule. The results indicated that the spatiotemporal variation in DGT in the HID, and showed moderate variation characteristics, consistent with scale-effect features, which was deeply influenced by the regional climate and human activities. The DGT in the HID showed different temporal stabilities before and after 2000 caused by the application of Water-saving practices (WSPs). The stability sites were not entirely the same in different years or time periods, but they were all at the moderate DGT level in the HID. The results of this study can provide more insights for improving soil salinization and groundwater monitoring and provide more information for agricultural water-use efficiency and management.

Long-term River Water Temperature Reconstruction and Investigation: A Case Study of the Dongting Lake Basin, China

Abstract:Water temperature is a fundamental property of river habitats and aquatic ecosystems. In some cases, assessing water temperature changes is restrained by the availability of historical observation. This study proposed a framework to address the water temperature data scarcity in thermal regime assessment by incorporating the long short-term memory (LSTM) network and the time series technologies. The factors affecting water temperature included air temperature, evaporation, and streamflow. Driven by the historical observation of these factors, the LSTM network produced long-term water temperature series. The time series technologies unraveled the temporal dynamics of the reconstructed water temperature. The trend, periodicity, and complexity were investigated using linear regression, trend-free pre-whitening Mann-Kendall test, Sen's slope, wavelet transform, and moving sample entropy. The framework was applied in the Dongting Lake Basin, China, which drains four tributaries: Xiangjiang, Zishui, Yuanjiang, and Lishui Rivers. The LSTM network reconstructed the monthly water temperature series from 1960 to 2020, which was good surrogate data for thermal regime evaluation. The annual water temperature of the four tributaries increased significantly, with an average warming rate of 0.15 °C per decade. Heterogeneity of tendency and changing rates existed across sub-basins and months, and the warming water temperature dominated the variation. A significant oscillation of a one-year period across six decades was identified in the Dongting Lake Basin. The water temperature complexity decreased significantly in the Xiangjiang, Zishui, and Yuanjiang Rivers, while it increased significantly in the Lishui River. The case study indicated that the framework was practicable and flexible with explicit structure. It could be applied in other basins to address water temperature data scarcity and support the comprehensive riverine thermal regime assessment.

Abstract:Shallow temperatures down to a depth of 100 m were measured over one year in 19 closed boreholes located in Nanjing, China, to reveal the conditions and factors influencing the subsurface thermal regime. A monitoring concept with distributed temperature sensing, fiber Bragg grating-based sensor, and a type of Resistance Tem-perature Detectors, is implemented, providing spatial distribution characteristics of subsurface temperatures. The results show that temperatures near the surface are most dynamic, influenced by the air temperature. The temperature remains stable at the depth of 10-20 m. The mean transition temperature is 18.1 degrees C. Borehole measurements are interpolated by using satellite images and surface temperature records to obtain large-scale surface temperature distributions and temporal variations of subsurface temperature. Geological and hydro-logical conditions are primary factors by affecting subsurface upward heat flux and heat loss. Urban land cover change and enhanced heat release from urbanization contribute to a subsurface urban heat island with intensities of 1.0-4.4 degrees C. The altered subsurface thermal regime is of primary concern for the management of shallow geothermal energy use. The monitoring concept in this study can provide spatially-temporally continuous pro-files of subsurface temperature and become a reference for city-wide geothermal monitoring in other urban areas.

Thematic information, including surface temperature, urban area, and surface slope are derived from Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) data and digital elevation models (DEM). GIS is applied as a decision-support tool to integrate the thematic information for suitability analysis. The results indicate that combining remote sensing with GIS is an overall effective and accurate method for geothermal exploration. Three developed geothermal fields are successfully extracted in Tengchong, and promising areas are found to the north of study area and warrant further exploration.
Analysis of Groundwater–lake Interaction by Distributed Temperature Sensing in Badain Jaran Desert, Northwest China

Abstract:The Badain Jaran Desert is the second largest desert of China with a total area of 49 200 km2. At least 72 perennial lakes are scattered throughout the desert, sustaining a unique desert–lake ecosystem. Groundwater of various origins was believed to play an essential role in maintaining those desert lakes, but hydrological measurements are lacking due to difficult field conditions. This study applied the distributed temperature sensing technique to continuously measure temperature variations in one of the desert lakes – the Badain Lake – to identify groundwater discharge to the lake based on the temperature differences between groundwater and lake water. Because temperature may be influenced by various unforeseen and temporary factors, it is critical to discern those factors that may affect the temperature such as solar radiation and vertical temperature stratification and to ensure that the temperature variations of the lake water as detected by the distributed temperature sensing are mainly caused by groundwater discharge. A time window was identified during which the groundwater discharge is the dominant factor that determines the temperature pattern of the lake water. The results show that the temperature near the eastern and southeastern lakeshore of the eastern Badain Lake is colder than the average, indicating that this area is the main groundwater discharge zone. Near the northwestern lakeshore adjacent to a sand dune, a weak cold abnormal area was identified, indicating that the sand dune is another recharge source to the lake through channelling the local precipitation toward the lake. The contribution from the sand dune, however, appeared to be less than that from the regional groundwater flow. This study provides the first identification of the temperature abnormal areas, which imply groundwater discharges into desert lakes and contributes to a better understanding of the unique desert–lake ecosystem. Detecting Geothermal Anomalies Using Multi-Temporal Thermal Infrared Remote Sensing Data in the Damxung–Yangbajain Basin, Qinghai–Tibet Plateau

Abstract:Geothermal energy is an eco-friendly, renewable source of underground thermal energy that exists in the interior of the earth. By tapping into these formations, fluids can be channeled to heat the rock formations above, resulting in a significantly higher land surface temperature (LST). However, LST readings are influenced by various factors such as sun radiation, cyclical variations, and precipitation, which can mask the temperature anomalies caused by geothermal heat. To address these issues and highlight the LST anomalies caused by geothermal heat, this paper proposes a methodology to efficiently and quickly calculate the multi-temporal LST leveraging of the Google Earth Engine (GEE) in the Damxung–Yangbajain basin, Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. This method incorporates terrain correction, altitude correction, and multi-temporal series comparison to extract thermal anomaly signals. The existing geothermal manifestations are used as a benchmark to further refine the methodology. The results indicate that the annual mean winter LST is a sensitive indicator of geothermal anomaly signals. The annual mean winter LST between 2015 and 2020 varied from −14.7 °C to 26.7 °C, with an average of 8.6 °C in the study area. After altitude correction and water body removal, the annual mean winter LST varied from −22.1 °C to 23.3 °C, with an average of 6.2 °C. When combining the distribution of faults with the results of the annual mean winter LST, this study delineated the geothermal potential areas that are located predominantly around the fault zone at the southern foot of the Nyainqentanglha Mountains. Geothermal potential areas exhibited a higher LST, ranging from 12.6 °C to 23.3 °C. These potential areas extend to the northeast, and the thermal anomaly range reaches as high as 19.6%. The geothermal potential area makes up 8.2% of the entire study area. The results demonstrate that the approach successfully identified parts of known geothermal fields and indicates sweet spots for future research. This study highlights that utilizing the multi-temporal winter LST is an efficient and cost-effective method for prospecting geothermal resources in plateau environments.

Airborne Thermal Remote Sensing for Estimation of Groundwater Discharge to A River

Abstract:Traditional methods for studying surface water and groundwater interactions have usually been limited to point measurements, such as geochemical sampling and seepage measurement. A new methodology is presented for quantifying groundwater discharge to a river, by using river surface temperature data obtained from airborne thermal infrared remote sensing technology. The Hot Spot Analysis toolkit in ArcGIS was used to calculate the percentage of groundwater discharge to a river relative to the total flow of the river. This methodology was evaluated in the midstream of the Heihe River in the arid and semiarid northwest China. The results show that the percentage of groundwater discharge relative to the total streamflow was as high as 28%, which is in good agreement with the results from previous geochemical studies. The data analysis methodology used in this study is based on the assumption that the river water is fully mixed except in the areas of extremely low flow velocity, which could lead to underestimation of the amount of groundwater discharge. Despite this limitation, this remote sensing-based approach provides an efficient means of quantifying the surface water and groundwater interactions on a regional scale.

Abstract:The distribution and flow of geothermal energy in the North China region are influenced by geological structures and rock thermal properties. However, the interactions between geothermal energy, groundwater movement, and hydrogeochemical processes are not well understood. In this study, a numerical model was developed to simulate these interactions under different geological conditions. The results showed that the stress field of geological structures affects the flow path and velocity distribution of geothermal fluid, leading to distortion and uneven temperature distribution. The distribution of high-mineralized zones of geothermal water indicated the main recharge area in the northern part of the North China Basin (Henan). Hydrochemistry analysis revealed a dynamic balance between centrifugal and centripetal flows in sandstone geothermal water. The study provides important insights for the exploration and development of underground geothermal water, as well as the assessment and optimization of geothermal resources in large basins.
