Abstract:Type-II Cu2S-CdS core/shell (including Cu2S/CdS and CdS/Cu2S) semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs). which call produce efficient spatial separation of electrons and holes between the core and shell, were Successfully synthesized. The results from absorption spectra, photoluminescence (PL) spectra. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and PL lifetime measurements all confirmed the formation of the type-II core/shell NCs. The emission wavelength of the type-II Cu2S/CdS core/shell NCs can be readily tuned between 515 nm and 760 inn through two methods: core size control and shell thickness control. The highest PL quantum yield that the Cu2S/CdS core/shell NCs reached was similar to 12% by controlling the shell thickness, while the core Cu2S nanocrystals had no PL at all. The PL decay data revealed that Cu2S/CdS NCs had a dual exponential characteristic and the PL emission with the longest lifetime (more than 1400 ns) occupied more than 85%. After overcoating ZnS, a Cu2S/CdS/ZnS core/shell1/shell2 structure was formed, which resulted in a blue-shift of the emission wavelength. Using the synthesis strategy of Cu2S/CdS, CdS/Cu2S type-II NCs also produced tunable emissions in the visible range.

Abstract:In order to improve the chemical stability of quantum dots in application for quantum dot sensitized solar cells, we prepared CdxZn1-xTe/CdS core/shell quantum dots with type-II structure by an aqueous phase process using 3-mercaptopropionic acid as a stabilizing agent. We investigated the composition of Zn and Cd in CdxZn1-xTe quantum dots by X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. The X-ray diffraction patterns confirm the cubic zinc combines structure of CdxZn1-xTe quantum dots. In addition, we investigated the optical absorption, fluorescence emission and emission decay of samples, indicating that the energy level of ternary quantum dots can be controlled by both size and composition. Therefore, quantum dots with type-II structure can be prepared easily, which is beneficial to the improvement of fluorescence lifetime. We find that there are two decay processes in the emission decay kinetics of CdxZn1-xTe and core/shell CdxZn1-xTe-CdS quantum dots. The average lifetime of the photoexcited carriers is 24.07 ns and 39.80 ns, respectively.

Abstract:Synthesis of colloidal nanocrystals of II-VI semiconductor materials has been refined in recent decades and their size dependent optoelectronic properties have been well established. Here we report a facile synthesis of CdSe-CdS core-shell heterostructures using a two-step hot injection process. Red-shifts in absorption and photoluminescence spectra show that the obtained quantum dots have quasi-type-II alignment of energy levels. The obtained nanocrystals have a heterostructure with a large and highly faceted tetrahedral CdS shell grown epitaxially over a spherical CdSe core. The obtained morphology as well as high resolution electron microscopy confirms that the tetrahedral shell have a zinc blende crystal structure. A phenomenological mechanism for the growth and morphology of the nanocrystals is discussed.

Abstract:Multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/CdS core/shell heterostructures have been successfully synthesized via a simple solution-phase method. The thickness of CdS shells can be facilely tuned by either the reaction temperature or time. The CdS nanoparticles are first formed directly on the surface of MWCNT, and then a uniform CdS sheath is yielded via orientated aggregation processes. The present work provides a simple route to obtain MWCNT-based core/shell heterostructures and thus is of wide interest for the studies of nanomaterials and nanodevices.

Abstract:Novel type-II core/shell structure quantum dos have been synthesized for solar cell photoelectrode material. Cd0.64Zn0.36Te and CdS were chosen as a core and shell, respectively, to generate type-II core/shell structure quantum dos (QDs). Density functional theory was employed to explore the energy structure of Cd1-xZnxTe/CdS core/shell QDs, revealing that introduction of Zn element is a feasible strategy to prepare CdTe/CdS based QDs with type-II core/shell structure. Then, Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS core/shell QDs were synthesized by aqueous phase method. Microscopic measurements showed that Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS core/shell QDs have high crystalline quality. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy together with optical spectra indicated an upward shift of the Cd0.64Zn0.36Te conduction band edge compared with CdTe, as also evidenced by systematic density functional theory based first principle calculation. Photoluminescence decay measurement also indicated the enhanced electron injection rate and decreased charge recombination of Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS QD sensitized TiO2 films. In addition, by optimizing the deposition cycles of the CdS shell, the power conversion efficiency of Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS QDs sensitized solar cells was enhanced.

Abstract:Using phosphine-free and "green" chalcogen precursors, controlled synthesis of high quality CdS/ZnSe/ZnS core/shell1/shell2 nanocrystals has been successfully carried out using different sized CdS nanocrystals as cores. The properties and structures of the synthesized nanocrystals were characterized by absorption spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). By changing CdS core sizes and/or ZnSe shell thicknesses, the PL range of CdS/ZnSe core/shell nanocrystals could be adjusted from 500 nm to 630 nm with type-II optical characteristics. The PL quantum yields (QYs) of these nanocrystals were 50-60% after the growth of thick ZnS shells, their full width at half maximum (FWHM) was kept below 50 nm during the entire growth process, and the total Cd content was reduced to about 1% in atomic ratio. TEM images showed narrow size distributions and XRD results demonstrated the zinc blende structure of CdS was retained following subsequent growth of ZnSe and ZnS shells. More than 2 g of high quality CdS/ZnSe/ZnS nanocrystals were successfully prepared in a large scale synthesis with the use of only low-cost, green, and environmentally friendly reagents.

Abstract:Type II CdSe/CdTe core/ shell nanocrystals with a dot shape were synthesized using a modified SILAR technique that incorporates cycling of the reaction temperature ( thermal cycling). Conversely, experimental results revealed that the standard SILAR alone produced type II core/ shell nanocrystals in a peanut shape ( 1D). Despite their differences in shape, the optical properties observed for the type II dot- and peanut-shaped core/ shell nanocrystals were similar. The dot- shaped nanocrystals were confirmed as core/ shell structures with an abrupt type II heterojunction within the experimental accuracy, and the peanut-shaped ones were found to be consistent with CdSe and CdTe separated on the two ends of the rods. Similar techniques were used for the synthesis of CdS/CdSe/ CdTe type II colloidal quantum well heterostructures with dot and peanut shapes. For these type II colloidal quantum well structures, the PL peak positions were shown to be readily tunable by varying the CdSe and CdTe shell thickness, something not typically seen for the quantum dots. The PL quantum yield of these nanocrystals were found to range between 30 and 60%.

Abstract:The CdS/SiO(2) core/shell nanowires (NWs) with controlled shell thickness were successfully synthesized and subsequently heat-treated at 500 °C. The influences of silica shell coating and annealing processes on their optical properties have been investigated. Compared with original CdS NWs, the annealed CdS/SiO(2) NWs exhibited an enhanced band-edge emission with slowed photoluminescence lifetime, while the intensity of defect emission decreased. The results were ascribed to the surface passivation and recrystallization by shell coating and annealing. We believe our finding would help improving the optical properties of semiconductor NWs, and facilitate its applications in various realms, such as nanoscale emitter, sensor, and photoelectric device.

Abstract:We report the synthesis, structure and nonlinear optical properties of cadmium sulphide (CdS) nanocrystallines (NCs) synthesized electrochemically both with and without detergent ATLAS G3300. Relevant structural and morphological features are explored by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The efficiency of the second harmonic generation (SHG) appears to be strongly dependent on the energy density of the incident fundamental laser radiation and NC sizes.

Abstract:This paper introduced a two-step method for the synthesis of core/shell type nano-composites, which exhibited superior properties over single material, like photoactivity. The core material, cadium sulfide were prepared via a hydrothermal method, using PVP as surfactant to avoid severe aggregation. We obtained high crystalline nanocrystals with dimensions varied from 10 nm to 12 nm, and the nano-particles cohered together to form clusters. We applied a sonochemical route to improve the dispersion properties during the process of hydrolysation of Ti(OC4H9)(4) which coated core material with a layer of stable TiO2. By adjusting molar ratio of precursors, morphopology of CdS/TiO2 transferred from CdS embedded in continuous TiO2 matrix to products with obvious core/shell structure, which validated the unique effects of sonochemical method in the synthesis of nano-materials. And from the absorbance spectra of degraded methyl orange, the nanocomposites showed superior photoactivity over single material due to better separation of opposite carriers.

Abstract:A simple method was introduced to synthesize CdTe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals (NCs) by using a new kind of "green" tellurium precursor. Both absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra of CdTe/CdS NCs exhibited a discontinuous shift as follows: slight (<10 nm), large (∼30 nm), and slight (<10 nm) red-shift during the growth of CdS shell. Different sized CdTe cores were introduced to synthesize CdTe/CdS core/shell NCs and similar discontinuous red-shift phenomena in the PL spectra were observed. These characteristics indicated that the structure of CdTe/CdS NCs gradually evolved from type-I to type-II, in agreement with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the tuning of PL quantum yields (QYs), and PL lifetime results.

Abstract:Core/shell nanowires (CSNWs) composed of Si, C, and SiC are promising systems for optoelectronic devices. Through computational investigations, we find that the band gaps (E-sigma) of these nanowires can be controlled not only by changing their composition, but also by adjusting the core/shell thickness ratio. For Si/SiC or SiC/C CSNWs with a fixed total number of layers, the dependence of E-sigma on the core/shell thickness ratio shows a bowing effect. E-sigma can be tuned from a few eV all the way to zero. These investigations provide direction for designing optoelectronic devices based on Earth-abundant elements.

Abstract:High quality single-crystal CdS nanowire ( NW) networks have been synthesized on Si(111) substrates via the chemical vapour deposition method. X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction show that the NWs in the networks grow along the < 11 (2) over bar0 > directions and their (0001) crystal planes are parallel to the Si(111) substrates. Room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra of single CdS NWs in the networks are dominated by a near-band-edge emission and free from deep-level defect emissions. The PLs resulting from free-exciton and bound-exciton recombinations are detected at 77 K. The results of the electrical transport measurement on the CdS NW networks show that the current can flow through different NWs via the cross-junctions. The resistivity, electron concentration and electron mobility of single NWs in the networks are estimated by fitting the I-V curves measured on single NWs with the metal-semiconductor-metal model suggested by Zhang et al (2006 Appl. Phys. Lett. 88 073102; 2007 Adv. Funct. Mater. at press).
The Structural and Electronic Properties of CdS/ZnS Core-Shell Nanowires

Abstract:The structural and electronic properties of the CdS/ZnS core-shell nanowires (NWs) oriented along [001] direction have been investigated by means of the first-principles calculation. It is found that CdS core suffers from the compressive strain in the CdS-core/ZnS-shell NWs, and ZnS core is stretched in the ZnS-core/CdS-shell NWs. A thicker ZnS shell can improve the NWs' stability, and a thicker CdS shell would decrease their stability. For both CdS/ZnS core-shell NWs, the band gap decreases linearly with increasing the shell when the core size is fixed. However, when the diameter of NWs is fixed, CdS-core/ZnS-shell NWs with a thicker shell would have larger band gap. The results agree well with that of red-shift or blue-shift of the spectrum in experimental observations. The partial density of states indicates that the contribution to valence band maximum mainly comes from the S-3p state, and the contribution to conduction band minimum mainly comes from Cd-5s state for CdS-core/ZnS-shell NWs. Thus the electrons would be effectively confined in CdS core, and the holes tend to distribute over both the core and shell. It can be deduced that CdS-core/ZnS-shell NWs with a thicker shell may have larger mobility.

Abstract:Cobalt silicide nanostructures have been synthesized by a spontaneous chemical vapor transport and reaction method. The temperature and the vapor flow rate were shown to critically influence the growth of nanostructures. The effects of two main parameters on the growth of nanostructures were discussed. The phases formed were determined by the Gibbs free energy changes in the reactions. Various phases (CoSi, Co2Si) and morphologies, such as single-stern nanowires, three-dimensional (3D) nanowire networks, and aloelike nanostructures, have been synthesized. Very low turn-on field (1.42 V/mu m) and good conductance obtained from field-emission and electrical property measurements, respectively, indicate that CoSi nanowires are potentially useful for electronic devices.
From Cu2S nanocrystals to Cu doped CdS nanocrystals through cation exchange: controlled synthesis, optical properties and their p-type conductivity research

Abstract:Heterovalent doping represents an effective method to control the optical and electronic properties of semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs), such as the luminescence and electronic impurities (p-, n-type doping). Considering the phase structure diversity, coordination varieties of Cu atoms in Cu2S NCs, and complexity of Cu doping in II-VI NCs, monodisperse Cu2S NCs with pure hexagonal phase were synthesized firstly. Then through cation exchange reaction between Cd ions and well-defined Cu2S NCs, dominant Cu(I) doped CdS NCs were produced successfully. The substitutional Cu(I) dopants with controllable concentrations were confirmed by local atom-specific fine structure from X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, elemental analysis characterizations from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the electron spin resonance (ESR) measurement. The dominant and strong Cu(I) dopant fluorescence was verified by their absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectra, and PL lifetime. Finally, the band positions and the p-type conductivities of the as-prepared Cu2S and Cu(I) doped CdS NCs were identified by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) measurements. The high monodispersity of NCs enables their strong film-scale self-assembly and will hasten their subsequent applications in devices.

Abstract:Thin CdSe layers ("quantum shells") were epitaxially grown onto CdS nanocrystal templates. Their optical properties are dominated by the shell thickness despite the different bandgap and size of the templates. The emission of the CdSe quantum shells, which can be tuned by varying the shell thickness, ranges from 520 to 650 nm (see Figure), and the emission quantum yield can be increased to over 40 % by coating the quantum shells with epitaxially grown CdS thin layers (CdSe colloidal "quantum wells"). Abstract:We have developed a versatile approach for preparing core/shell structured noble metal (alloy)/cadmium selenide nanocrystals with different shell thicknesses. Cd was bound to the core in the presence of reagents capable of reacting with the carboxyl of fatty acids of cadmium precursors. Subsequent adding of Se precursor led to the formation of core/shell structures.

Abstract:Well-defined intersectional CdS nanocrystalline thin films with a conifer-like morphology were synthesized by a facile electrochemical process. The morphology, structure, and phase composition of CdS nanostructures were examined by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The electrochemical deposition conditions influencing the synthesis of these conifer-like CdS nanocrystals, such as deposition temperature, deposition time, current density, and concentrations of the precursors, were studied systematically. The orientation-transformation mechanism of the growth of conifer-like CdS nanocrystals was proposed based on the results, which is beneficial for the shape-controlled synthesis of other shaped nanostructures. The charge transport properties of these thin films before and after annealing treatment were also studied via the space-charge-limited conduction model, from which the total density of trapping states and the electron mobility in CdS nanocrystalline thin films were estimated.
