Abstract:Using all atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we have studied the mechanical properties of ZnS/CdS core/shell nanowires. Our results show that the coating of a few atomic layer CdS shell on the ZnS nanowire leads to a significant change in the stiffness of the core/shell nanowires compared to the stiffness of pure ZnS nanowires. The binding energy between the core and shell region decreases due to the lattice mismatch at the core-shell interface. This reduction in binding energy plays an important role in determining the stiffness of a core/shell nanowire. We have also investigated the effects of the shell on the thermal conductivity and melting behavior of the nanowires.

Abstract:In recent years, various kinds of ZnO-based core@shell nanomaterials have been paid much attention due to their widespread applications in the fields of physics, chemistry and energy conversion. In this work, the electronic and optical properties of a new type of ZnO-based one-dimensional core@shell nanostructure, which is composed of inner ZnO nanowire and outer carbon nanotube (CNT), is calculated based on the first-principles density functional theory (DFT). Calculation results suggest that the ZnO nanowire encapsulated in (9, 9)-CNT is the most stable structure from the view of formation energy. The interaction between the inner ZnO nanowire and the outer (9, 9) CNT belongs to a weak van der Waals type. The complex structure is found to possess metallicity for the outer (9, 9) CNT and maintain the wide band gap nature for the inner ZnO nanowire. Under the different external strains, the charge redistribution between inner ZnO nanowire and outer CNT caused by electron tunneling leads to the shift of Dirac point and the band narrowing of inner ZnO nanowire. The inner ZnO nanowire only has light absorption in the UV region, which is consistent with its optical property originating from its wide bandgap nature.

Abstract:Core-shell semiconductor quantum dots materials are being investigated due to their special performance in repairing surface defects for the single quantum dots and greatly improving the optical performance of quantum dots. Instead of a traditional small flask as a reaction vessel to prepare NaHTe, the preparation of the CdTe core using a three-necked flask was achieved. 10 CdTe/CdS and CdTe/ZnS core-shell semiconductor quantum dots with different core sizes, shell thicknesses and shell materials were synthesized. The UV–visible absorption and fluorescence spectrum of 10 kinds of core-shell semiconductor quantum dots materials were measured and analyzed. The absorption spectrum of quantum dots in the UV-visible band shows that with the increase of quantum dots size, the absorption peak is red-shifted. The CdTe/CdS quantum dots differ in fluorescence lifetime and intensity due to the conversion of different core and shell sizes of quantum dots between types I and II. When the shell thickness of CdTe/ZnS increases, the shell thickness of ZnS reduces the number of dangling bonds and defect states on the core surface, which increases the probability of electron-hole pairs recombination and causes the fluorescence peak red-shift.

Abstract:Theoretic investigation on cubic and hexagonal structures of CdS as done by a method of density function within the local density approximation. The study of the band structure and the density of states show that the band-gaps of cubic and hexagonal CdS are very close, which have a difference of less than 8.51%. The bottom of conduction-band and the top of valence-band of both phases are attributed to Cd5s and S3p orbits, respectively. The analysis of band structure implied that the two structures of CdS have a conformed optical property under visible spectrum, which also explains why the mixed structures of CdS still have good optical properties.

Abstract:The water-soluble CdSe/ZnS core-shell nanoparticles have been synthesized by using L-cysteine hydrochloride as stabilizer. The optical properties of CdSe nanoclusters and the influence of ZnS shell on the CdSe core were studied by UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. A remarkable emission enhancement with a factor of 3.5 for CdSe/ZnS core-shell nanoparticles in the intensity was observed compared to the CdSe nanoparticles. The maximum emission wavelength of CdSe/ZnS nanoparticles had a slight redshift. The absorption spectrum of CdSe/ZnS core-shell structure showed a small redshift as compared to the CdSe core. TEM, ED and XPS were used to characterize the size, shape and composition of CdSe/ZnS nanoclusters. Results of FT-IR show that sulfur and oxygen atoms in L-cysteine molecules took part in coordination with metal ions on the surface of the nanoparticles. There also existed amino-group on the surface of the core-shell nanoparticles. The above results demonstrate that the CdSe/ZnS nanoparticles are with a high degree of size-distribution and monodispersity in addition to the superior chemical stability and good optical characteristics.

Abstract:This paper presents experimental and theoretical studies of binary semiconductor CdS, Zn:CdS, and (Zn-Ni) co-doped CdS. Thin films of pure CdS, Cd35ZnS36, and Cd34ZnNiS36 alloys grown by sol-gel spin coating were analyzed using X-ray diffraction, EDX, and UV-vis spectroscopy. The experimental results show the success of growing nanomaterials in hexagonal structures with crystallite sizes ranging from 1.6 to 2.11 nm and possessing band gaps in the region 2.30 -2.49 eV. Additionally, we investigate the structural and optoelectronic properties of these materials in the ground state using the density functional theory implemented in the WIEN2k software. The first principles calculations confirmed that the structural and optical properties of CdS align with the experimental results. For nanostructure Cd35ZnS36, the lattice parameters decrease, and the band gap increases to 2.85 eV with Zn doping. The (Zn-Ni) co-doped CdS structure optimization shows that the ferromagnetic configuration is more stable than the non-magnetic structure. The spin-polarized band structure investigations reveal that the majority spin-up channel is about 2.79 eV while the minority spin-down channel is around 2.19 eV. These results increase the importance of Zn:CdS and CdZnNiS alloys for optoelectronic and spintronic applications. The calculated optical properties of CdS, Zn:CdS, and (Zn-Ni) co-doped CdS show slight changes in refractive index and extinction coefficient with the doping and a quantitative agreement with the experimental findings.

Abstract:In order to improve the chemical stability of quantum dots in application for quantum dot sensitized solar cells, we prepared CdxZn1-xTe/CdS core/shell quantum dots with type-II structure by an aqueous phase process using 3-mercaptopropionic acid as a stabilizing agent. We investigated the composition of Zn and Cd in CdxZn1-xTe quantum dots by X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. The X-ray diffraction patterns confirm the cubic zinc combines structure of CdxZn1-xTe quantum dots. In addition, we investigated the optical absorption, fluorescence emission and emission decay of samples, indicating that the energy level of ternary quantum dots can be controlled by both size and composition. Therefore, quantum dots with type-II structure can be prepared easily, which is beneficial to the improvement of fluorescence lifetime. We find that there are two decay processes in the emission decay kinetics of CdxZn1-xTe and core/shell CdxZn1-xTe-CdS quantum dots. The average lifetime of the photoexcited carriers is 24.07 ns and 39.80 ns, respectively.
Electronic structure and optical properties of ZnS/CdS nanoheterostructures

Abstract:The electronic and optical properties of spherical nanoheterostructures are studied within the semi-empirical $sp^{3}s^{*}$ tight-binding model including the spin-orbit interaction. We use a symmetry-based approach previously applied to CdSe and CdTe quantum dots. The complete one-particle spectrum is obtained by using group-theoretical methods. The excitonic eigenstates are then deduced in the configuration-interaction approach by fully taking into account the Coulomb direct and exchange interactions. Here we focus on ZnS/CdS, ZnS/CdS/ZnS and CdS/ZnS nanocrystals with particular emphasis on recently reported experimental data. The degree of carrier localization in the CdS well layer is analyzed as a function of its thickness. We compute the excitonic fine structure, i.e., the relative intensities of low-energy optical transitions. The calculated values of the absorption gap show a good agreement with the experimental ones. Enhanced resonant photoluminescence Stokes shifts are predicted.

Abstract:Novel type-II core/shell structure quantum dos have been synthesized for solar cell photoelectrode material. Cd0.64Zn0.36Te and CdS were chosen as a core and shell, respectively, to generate type-II core/shell structure quantum dos (QDs). Density functional theory was employed to explore the energy structure of Cd1-xZnxTe/CdS core/shell QDs, revealing that introduction of Zn element is a feasible strategy to prepare CdTe/CdS based QDs with type-II core/shell structure. Then, Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS core/shell QDs were synthesized by aqueous phase method. Microscopic measurements showed that Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS core/shell QDs have high crystalline quality. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy together with optical spectra indicated an upward shift of the Cd0.64Zn0.36Te conduction band edge compared with CdTe, as also evidenced by systematic density functional theory based first principle calculation. Photoluminescence decay measurement also indicated the enhanced electron injection rate and decreased charge recombination of Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS QD sensitized TiO2 films. In addition, by optimizing the deposition cycles of the CdS shell, the power conversion efficiency of Cd0.64Zn0.36Te/CdS QDs sensitized solar cells was enhanced.

Abstract:Fully-surrounded Zn3P2/ZnS core/shell nanowires (NWs) were synthesized for the first time via a two-step method: a catalyst free chemical vapor deposition followed by a low-pressure vulcanization process. Field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and high-angle angular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the morphologies, crystal structure, and element composition of the core/shell NWs. The band structure analysis demonstrates that the Zn3P2/ZnS core–shell NW type-II heterostructures have bright potential in photovoltaic nanodevice applications. The core/shell NW growth method used here can be extended to other material system.
Band-filling of solution-synthesized CdS nanowires

Abstract:The band edge optical characterization of solution-synthesized CdS nanowires (NWs) is described. Investigated wires are made through a solution-liquid-solid approach that entails the use of low-melting bimetallic catalyst particles to seed NW growth. Resulting diameters are approximately 14 nm, and lengths exceed 1 microm. Ensemble diameter distributions are approximately 13%, with corresponding intrawire diameter variations of approximately 5%. High-resolution transmission electron micrographs show that the wires are highly crystalline and have the wurtzite structure with growth along at least two directions: [0001] and [1010]. Band edge emission is observed with estimated quantum yields between approximately 0.05% and 1%. Complementary photoluminescence excitation spectra show structure consistent with the linear absorption. Carrier cooling dynamics are subsequently examined through ensemble lifetime and transient differential absorption measurements. The former reveals unexpectedly long band edge decays that extend beyond tens of nanoseconds. The latter indicates rapid intraband carrier cooling on time scales of 300-400 fs. Subsequent recovery at the band edge contains significant Auger contributions at high intensities which are usurped by other, possibly surface-related, carrier relaxation pathways at lower intensities. Furthermore, an unusual intensity-dependent transient broadening is seen, connected with these long decays. The effect likely stems from band-filling on the basis of an analysis of observed spectral shifts and line widths.

Abstract:Multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/CdS core/shell heterostructures have been successfully synthesized via a simple solution-phase method. The thickness of CdS shells can be facilely tuned by either the reaction temperature or time. The CdS nanoparticles are first formed directly on the surface of MWCNT, and then a uniform CdS sheath is yielded via orientated aggregation processes. The present work provides a simple route to obtain MWCNT-based core/shell heterostructures and thus is of wide interest for the studies of nanomaterials and nanodevices.

Abstract:High quality single-crystal CdS nanowire ( NW) networks have been synthesized on Si(111) substrates via the chemical vapour deposition method. X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction show that the NWs in the networks grow along the < 11 (2) over bar0 > directions and their (0001) crystal planes are parallel to the Si(111) substrates. Room-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra of single CdS NWs in the networks are dominated by a near-band-edge emission and free from deep-level defect emissions. The PLs resulting from free-exciton and bound-exciton recombinations are detected at 77 K. The results of the electrical transport measurement on the CdS NW networks show that the current can flow through different NWs via the cross-junctions. The resistivity, electron concentration and electron mobility of single NWs in the networks are estimated by fitting the I-V curves measured on single NWs with the metal-semiconductor-metal model suggested by Zhang et al (2006 Appl. Phys. Lett. 88 073102; 2007 Adv. Funct. Mater. at press).

Abstract:Type-II Cu2S-CdS core/shell (including Cu2S/CdS and CdS/Cu2S) semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs). which call produce efficient spatial separation of electrons and holes between the core and shell, were Successfully synthesized. The results from absorption spectra, photoluminescence (PL) spectra. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and PL lifetime measurements all confirmed the formation of the type-II core/shell NCs. The emission wavelength of the type-II Cu2S/CdS core/shell NCs can be readily tuned between 515 nm and 760 inn through two methods: core size control and shell thickness control. The highest PL quantum yield that the Cu2S/CdS core/shell NCs reached was similar to 12% by controlling the shell thickness, while the core Cu2S nanocrystals had no PL at all. The PL decay data revealed that Cu2S/CdS NCs had a dual exponential characteristic and the PL emission with the longest lifetime (more than 1400 ns) occupied more than 85%. After overcoating ZnS, a Cu2S/CdS/ZnS core/shell1/shell2 structure was formed, which resulted in a blue-shift of the emission wavelength. Using the synthesis strategy of Cu2S/CdS, CdS/Cu2S type-II NCs also produced tunable emissions in the visible range.
Tuning the Crystal Structure of the Epitaxial CdS Shells on Zinc-Blende CdSe Nanocrystals: Lattice Defects and Electronic Traps

Abstract:The CdS shells are epitaxially grown onto monodisperse zincblende CdSe core nanocrystals in octadecene mixed with fatty amines, with the volume fraction of fatty amines in the epitaxy solution (V-NH2) varying between 0 and 100%. The shape -except the nanoplatelets from the reactions with medium V-NH2 (especially 20% V-NH2)-and surface ligands of the resulting CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals from all reactions can be unified through a two-step surface treatment. The internal lattice defects originated from zinc-blende/wurtzite stacking fault(s), i.e., wurtzite lattice domain(s) in the CdS shells and twin fault(s) in the zinc-blende region, can be systematically controlled by varying the V-NH2 and remain unaltered during the surface treatments. Both twin faults and wurtzite CdS lattice domains neither affect the electronic structure of the core/shell nanocrystals nor create internal electronic defects for the nanocrystals. Photoluminescence decay dynamics of the dot-shaped core/shell nanocrystals with solely twin faults can be mono-exponential and near-unity radiative decay, but photoluminescence of those with wurtzite CdS domains would always decay with double-exponential even if the photoluminescence quantum yield is unity. The results here imply that the most common lattice defects related to the stacking faults for II-VI and III-V semiconductor nanocrystals can be managed for achieving high-quality optical properties.
Silica-coated and annealed CdS nanowires with enhanced photoluminescence

Abstract:The CdS/SiO(2) core/shell nanowires (NWs) with controlled shell thickness were successfully synthesized and subsequently heat-treated at 500 °C. The influences of silica shell coating and annealing processes on their optical properties have been investigated. Compared with original CdS NWs, the annealed CdS/SiO(2) NWs exhibited an enhanced band-edge emission with slowed photoluminescence lifetime, while the intensity of defect emission decreased. The results were ascribed to the surface passivation and recrystallization by shell coating and annealing. We believe our finding would help improving the optical properties of semiconductor NWs, and facilitate its applications in various realms, such as nanoscale emitter, sensor, and photoelectric device.

Abstract:Nearly monodisperse zinc-blende CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals were synthesized by epitaxial growth of 1-6 monolayers of CdS shell onto presynthesized zinc-blende CdSe core nanocrystals in one pot. To retain the zinc-blende structure, the reaction temperature was lowered to the 100-140 degrees C range by using cadmium diethyldithiocarbamate as a single-source precursor and primary amine as activation reagents for the precursor. Although the wurtzite counterparts grown under the same conditions showed optical properties similar to those reported in the literature, zinc-blende CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals demonstrated surprisingly different optical properties, with ensemble single-exponential photoluminescence decay, significant decrease of photoluminescence peak width by the shell growth, and comparatively high photoluminescence quantum yields. The lifetime for the single-exponential ensemble photoluminescence decay of zinc-blende CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals with 3-4 monolayers of CdS shell was reproducibly found to be approximately 16.5 +/- 1.0 ns.

Abstract:Novel core–shell nanostructures comprised of cubic sphalerite and hexagonal wurtzite ZnS have been synthesized at 150°C by a simple hydrothermal method. The results of HR-TEM and SAED investigation reveal that the cores of hexagonal wurtzite ZnS (ca. 200 nm in average diameter) are encapsulated by a shell of cubic sphalerite ZnS. The FE-SEM image of the nanomaterials shows a surface tightly packed with nanoparticles (<10 nm in size). The optical properties of the fabricated material have been studied in terms of ultraviolet–visible absorption and photoluminescence. Furthermore, a possible mechanism for the fabrication of the core–shell nanostructures has been presented.

Abstract:A theoretical analysis of optical properties in a ZnS/CdS/ZnS core/shell/shell spherical quantum dot was carried out within the effective mass approximation. The corresponding Schrödinger equation was solved using the finite element method via the 2D axis-symmetric module of COMSOL-Multiphysics software. Calculations included variations of internal dot radius, the application of electric and magnetic fields (both oriented along z-direction), as well as the presence of on-center donor impurity. Reported optical properties are the absorption and relative refractive index change coefficients. These quantities are related to transitions between the ground and first excited states, with linearly polarized incident radiation along the z-axis. It is found that transition energy decreases with the growth of internal radius, thus causing the red-shift of resonant peaks. The same happens when the external magnetic field increases. When the strength of applied electric field is increased, the opposite effect is observed, since there is a blue-shift of resonances. However, dipole matrix moments decrease drastically with the increase of the electric field, leading to a reduction in amplitude of optical responses. At the moment impurity effects are activated, a decrease in the value of the energies is noted, significantly affecting the ground state, which is more evident for small internal radius. This is reflected in an increase in transition energies.
