Abstract:Linear and miktoarm star-shaped diblock copolymers consisting of single-stranded DNA and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) with various compositions were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization and click chemistry. The temperature-responsive phase transition behavior, micellization, was systematically examined using UV vis spectrometry, high-sensitivity differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic light scattering, and small-angle X-ray scattering. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) increased, and its enthalpy decreased with decreasing PNIPAAm content The copolymers self-assembled into well-defined nanoparticles having a core composed of PNIPAAm and a coronal layer of DNA above LCST. The particle size and micellar aggregation number of copolymer chains depended on the macromolecular composition and chain architecture. On the other hand, regardless of their factors, the surface area occupied by one DNA strand was found to be almost unchanged. The hybridization of DNA on the nanoparticles with fully complementary one induced the aggregation of the particles in a non-cross-linking configuration. The nanoparticle composed of miktoarm star copolymer showed a quicker DNA-hybridization response in this non-cross-linking aggregation compared with the case of a linear analogue.
Phase Transition and Micellization of Temperature Responsive Dextran-graft-poly （N-Isopropylacrylamide） Polymers

Abstract:Phase behavior and micellization of dextran-graft-poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) polymers in aqueous solution are investigated in this paper using DSC and AFM methods. It is found that with the increase of grafting (G%) of the copolymers the endothermic enthalpy during the phase transition increases significantly and the transition temperature decreases slightly. The phase transition behavior of the copolymers is scanning rate dependent. Micelles are formed whenever the solution temperature is raised above the LCST of the copolymers. It is proposed that by using this thermal responsive property of the copolymers, drugs could be incorporated into the micelles without employing any organic solvent.

Abstract:The effect of molecular weight (MW) on the polymorphous crystallization and melting behavior of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) were systemically studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and time-resolved Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. It was found that the polymorphism of PLLA is not influenced much by MW, and the alpha'- and a-form crystals are produced at low and high crystallization temperature (T-c), respectively, regardless of the MW. However, MW significantly affects the crystallization kinetics, and the crystallization rate reduces greatly with MW increasing. Moreover, the T-c- and MW-dependent melting behavior of PLLA was clarified with combining the DSC and FTIR results. It was found that the alpha' to alpha-crystalline phase transition occurs prior to the dominant melting in both the low- and high-MW PLLA crystallized at low T-c. Unlike the high-MW PLLA, in low-MW PLLA crystallized at low T-c, the alpha'-form crystals only partially transform into the alpha-one, and some amounts of alpha'-form crystals melt directly without transition during the heating process. With increasing T-c, the melting of PLLA with various MWs changes from the phase transition + melting mechanism to the usual melt-recrystallization mechanism.

Abstract:Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and light scattering (LS) experiments were conducted to study the micellar morphologies and the transformation process of Polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide). The origin of morphological changes with temperature was also illustrated by the free energy calculation of micelles as a first approximation. 1,4-dioxane was chosen as the common solvent, and cyclohexane was selected as the selective solvent. At room temperature, spherical micelles are formed, and mixture of spherical micelles and cylindrical micelles are observed when the temperature decreased to 5°C. The PEO blocks are found to be slightly compressed in the core of the spherical micelle. Although the interfacial free energy is demonstrated to be the main driving force for the morphology transitions induced by decreasing temperature in this system, it is found that the reversible transformations when increasing to room temperature is not able to be observed in our experimental time range.

Abstract:Molecular orientations of the crystalline and the amorphous phases are studied in relation to morphology using all instrument constructed for simultaneous kinetic measurement of microscopic infrared (MicIR) dichroism from a predetermined sampling area and macroscopic stress of isotactic polypropylene (W) thin film uniaxially stretched at a constant strain rate at room temperature. The morphology imposes important influences oil profiles of MicIR dichroism as a function of stretching, time and also on a relationship between the orientation functions, f(c) and f(am), of the crystalline and the amorphous phases. Linear relationships between f(c) and f(am) are found for the local areas without giant spherulite inclusions when f(am) <0.3 similar to 0.4, suggesting the harmonious developments of amorphous chain deformation and lamellar ant orientation during the necking propagation. The proportionality constant between and f(c) and f(am) is not universal but is strongly dependent on the morphology of the surrounding area where the local area under examination is located. The linear relationship between f(c) and f(am) is completely invalidated for describing the relationship between the amorphous chain deformation and the lamellar orientation inside the spherulites, which reveals that the deformation mechanism in the spherulite is different from that in the microcrystalline region.

Abstract:Polymorphism phenomenon of melt-crystallized poly(butylene adipate) (PBA) has been studied by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It has been found that the isothermal crystallization leads to the formation of PBA polymorphic crystals, simply by changing the crystallization temperature. The PBA alpha crystal, beta crystal, and the mixture of two crystal forms grow at the crystallization temperatures above 32 degreesC, below 27 degreesC, and between these two temperatures, respectively. The relationship between PBA polymorphism and melting behaviors has been analyzed by the assignments of multiple melting peaks. Accordingly, the equilibrium melting temperatures T(m)degrees of both alpha and beta crystals were determined by Hoffman-Weeks and Gibbs-Thomson equations for the purpose of understanding the structural metastability. The T(m)degrees of the PBA alpha crystal was found to be higher than that of the beta crystal, indicating that the PBA alpha crystal form is a structurally stable phase and that the beta crystal form is a metastable phase. The analysis of growth kinetics of PBA polymorphic crystals indicates that the metastable PBA beta crystal is indeed the kinetically preferential result. Based on the thermal and kinetic results, the phenomenon of stability inversion with crystal size in melt-crystallized PBA was recognized, in terms of the growth mechanisms of PBA alpha and beta crystals and the transformation of beta to alpha crystals. The PBA beta --> alpha crystal transformation takes place at a sufficiently high annealing temperature, and the transformation has been evident to be a solid-sol id-phase transition process accompanied by the thickening of lamellar crystals. The molecular motion of polymer chains in both crystalline and amorphous phases has been discussed to understand the thickening and phase transformation behaviors.

Abstract:The molecular orientations in the crystalline and the amorphous phases in a quenched isotactic polypropylene (iPP) film with a smectic structure are studied using an instrument constructed for simultaneous kinetic measurement of microscopic infrared (MicIR) dichroism from a predetermined sampling area with a size of 200 × 200 μm2 and macroscopic stress of film uniaxially stretched at a constant elongation rate at 30 °C. Local deformation behavior in the sampling area is determined for one sample using a method of photogrammetry. During the passage of the necking through the sampling area, the local extension ratio λ(t) increases fast from 1.5 to 5, which induces the rapid orientation of iPP chains in both the crystalline and the amorphous phases. The orientation function of the amorphous phase, fam, from the mesoscale deformation of the sampling area is found to be well described by the pseudo-affine deformation mechanism, since the local area shrinks anisotropically during the passage of the neck shoulde...
Effect of chain conformational change on micelle structures: experimental studies and molecular dynamics simulations.

Abstract:The effect of chain conformation change on the self-assembly behavior of poly(gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (PBLG-b-PEG) was studied both experimentally by transmission electron microscopy, laser light scattering, and circular dichroism and computationally using molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. It was found that, by introducing trifluoroacetic acid to the PBLG-b-PEG solution, the conformation of the PBLG chain transforms from a-helix to random coil, which results in a change of the micelle structures formed by PBLG-b-PEG from rod to sphere. Meanwhile, the MD simulations were performed by using Brownian dynamics on the self-assembly behavior of model AB-type diblock copolymers with various chain rigidities of the A-block. The results show that, by decreasing the fraction of rigid chain conformation of the A-block, which corresponds to the helix-coil transition in the PBLG-b-PEG sample, the aggregate structure transforms from rod to sphere. The MD simulations also provide chain packing information in the micelles. On the basis of both experimental and MD simulation results, the mechanism regarding the effect of the conformation change of the polypeptide block copolymer on its self-association behavior is suggested.

Abstract:The effect of crystallization temperature on the micellar morphology of PCL-b-PEO block copolymers in water has been studied. It is found that the micellar morphology of PCL n PEO 44 and PCL n PEO 113 changes with crystallization temperature in different ways because of two competitive factors: perfection of the PCL crystals in the core and deformation of the soluble PEO block. For PCL n PEO 44 , perfection of the PCL crystals dominates the micellar morphology and lamellar micelles are formed at a higher crystallization temperature. For PCL n PEO 113 the micellar morphology is mainly determined by the tethering density and spherical micelles or cylindrical micelles with a larger length/diameter ratio are formed at a higher crystallization temperature because of the larger tethering density.

Abstract:The microstructural evolution of a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) with low hard segment content has been monitored utilizing in situ real-time synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and time-domain nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. The TPU is composed of 23 wt% of [4,4-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI)]-[1,4-butanediol (BD)] chain segments, which form hard domains, as [polytetrahydrofuran (PTHF)] forming soft domains. The number and distribution of monomer units in hard blocks is determined by the successive self-nucleation and annealing thermal fractionation technique. In situ SAXS method reveals heating-induced increase in the spacing of hard and soft domains, while time-domain 1H-NMR characterizes the changes in the phase composition and chain dynamics in these domains. A glassy fraction of short MDI-BD chain segments in hard domains passes through Tg above ambient temperature. At higher temperatures, MDI-BD nanocrystals start to melt. Sequence length distribution of MDI-BD chain segments causes a distribution in crystal sizes and wide melting temperature range. The melting is accompanied by the mixing of MDI-BD with PTHF segments in soft domains, and by increase in segmental mobility in these domains. Above 180 °C, the TPU melt is homogeneous on the scale above nanometers according to SAXS data.

Effects of Chain Entanglement on Liquid-Liquid Phase Separation Behavior of LCST-type Polymer Blends： Cloud Point and Decomposition Rate

Abstract:By preparing homogenous blend samples with different degrees of chain entanglement, we report an anomalous contribution of chain entanglement to phase separation temperature and rate of poly(methyl methacrylate)/poly(styrene-comaleic anhydride)(PMMA/SMA) blends presenting a typical lower critical solution temperature(LCST) behavior. The meltmixed PMMA/SMA blends with a higher chain entanglement density present a lower cloud point(Tc) and shorter delay time, but lower phase separation rate at the given temperature than solution-cast ones, suggesting that for the polymer blends with different condensed state structure, thermodynamically more facilitation to phase separation(lower Tc) is not necessarily equivalent to faster kinetics(decomposition rate). The experimental results indicate that the lower Tc of melt-mixed sample is ascribed to smaller concentration fluctuation wavelength(Λm) induced by higher entanglement degree, while higher entanglement degree in melt-mixed sample leads to a confined segmental dynamics and consequently a slower kinetics(decomposition rate) dominated by macromolecular diffusion at a comparable quench depth. These results reveal that the chain packing in polymer blends can remarkably influence the liquid-liquid phase separation behavior, which is a significant difference from decomposition of small molecular mixtures.

Abstract:Polymorphic crystalline structure has been a key factor determining the mechanical property and degradation behavior of biodegradable polymers. Herein, we report on the polymorphic crystalline structure, phase transition, and their effects on the mechanical property and degradation behavior of poly(p-dioxanone) (PPDO), a typical biodegradable and bioabsorbable semicrystalline polymer for biomedical applications. Both the polymorphic crystalline structure and crystallization kinetics of PPDO depend on crystallization temperature (To) drastically. Melting enthalpy and degree of crystallinity of PPDO first decrease and then increase with increasing T-c. PPDO forms a new mesomorphic polymorph (denoted as the alpha'-form) during crystallization at low Tc (<= 10 degrees C), in contrast to the common alpha crystals generated at high TT (>= 60 degrees C). The alpha' crystals have weaker interchain interactions and a shorter long period than the common alpha crystals, indicating the looser chain packing of a' crystals. The alpha' crystals are metastable, and they transform into the thermodynamically stable alpha crystals during heating. The alpha'-form PPDO possesses a slower degradation rate, higher flexibility, but lower strength and modulus than its a counterpart. This would provide a feasible way to tailor the degradation and mechanical properties of PPDO by varying crystal modification.
Coupling of Rotational Motion with Shape Fluctuations of Core-shell Microgels Having Tunable Softness

Abstract:The influence of shape fluctuations on deformable thermosensitive microgels in aqueous solution is investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and depolarized dynamic light scattering (DDLS). The systems under study consist of a solid core of polystyrene and a thermosensitive shell of cross-linked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) without and with embedded palladium nanoparticles. PNIPA is soluble in water, but has a lower critical solution temperature at 32 C (LCST). Below the LCST the PNIPA shell is swollen. Here we find that besides translational and rotational diffusion, the particles exhibit additional dynamics resulting from shape fluctuations. This leads to a pronounced apparent increase of the rotational diffusion coefficient. Above the transition temperature the shell collapses and provides a rather tight envelope of the core. In this state the dynamics of the shell is frozen and the core-shell particles behave like hard spheres. A simple physical model is presented to capture and explain the essentials of the coupling of rotational motion and shape fluctuations.

Abstract:The influence of two thermoresponsive polymers, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PVCL), on the phase transition behavior of a thermoresponsive ionic liquid, tributylhexylphosphonium 3-sulfopropylmethacrylate ([P4,4,4,6][MC3S]), was investigated. An obvious distinction was observed in the LCSTs and morphologies of [P4,4,4,6][MC3S]-PNIPAM and [P4,4,4,6][MC3S]-PVCL aqueous solutions, indicating their large differences in dynamic transition processes. In general, PNIPAM can "break" the water structure of [P4,4,4,6][MC3S] to decrease the transition temperature, while PVCL can "make" the water structure to increase it. Surprisingly, [P4,4,4,6][MC3S] has an unusual over-hydration behavior before dehydration while PNIPAM experiences a two-step transition process in [P4,4,4,6][MC3S]-PNIPAM aqueous solution, which has never been reported so far. Further studies revealed that the formation of strong intra-/inter-molecular hydrogen bonds C[double bond, length as m-dash]OD-N in PNIPAM is the driving force for the LCST phenomenon of [P4,4,4,6][MC3S]-PNIPAM solution, while it is the [P4,4,4,6][MC3S] that dominates the phase separation of [P4,4,4,6][MC3S]-PVCL solution.
Morphology Evolution of Aryl Amide Derivative Tmb5 As Beta-Form Nucleating Agent and Its Effect on the Crystallization of Isotactic Polypropylene

Abstract:The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to study the morphology evolution of an arylamide derivative TMB5 in different processing conditions and its effects on the beta-crystal formation of iPP. The results show that TMB5 doesn't have a defined melting point but can melt gradually when heating to 200 degrees C or over. On cooling, the TMB5 dissolved in iPP recrystallizes in the form of thinner needles which is different from its original shape and affects significantly the subsequent morphology development of iPP and finally affects the content of beta-form crystals in iPP. The compounding temperature is an important factor affecting the content of beta-form crystals. When the compounding temperature is lower than the decomposition temperature of TMB5, the content of beta-form crystals in iPP samples increases with increasing the compounding temperature. This can be explained by the formation of thinner needles and better dispersion of recrystallized TMB5. During the secondary processing procedure after compounding at a certain temperature, the lower melting temperature and cooling rate increase the content of beta-form crystals in PP.
Influence Of Annealing On Chain Entanglement And Molecular Dynamics In Weak Dynamic Asymmetry Polymer Blends

Abstract:The influence of annealing above the glass transition temperature (T-g) on chain entanglement and molecular dynamics of solution-cast poly(methyl methacrylate)/poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (PMMA/SMA) blends was investigated via a combination of dynamic rheological measurement and broadband dielectric spectroscopy. Chain entanglement density increases when the annealing temperature and/or time increases, resulting from the increased efficiency of chain packing and entanglement recovery. The results of the annealing treatment without cooling revealed that the increase of the entanglement density occurred during the annealing process instead of the subsequent cooling procedure. Annealing above T-g exerts a profound effect on segmental motion, including the transition temperature and dynamics. Namely, T-g shifts to higher temperatures and the relaxation time (tau(max)) increases due to the increased entanglement density and decreased molecular mobility. Either T-g or tau(max) approaches an equilibrium value gradually, corresponding to the equilibrium entanglement density that might be obtained through the theoretical predictions. However, no obvious distribution broadening is observed due to the unchanged heterogeneous dynamics. Furthermore, side group rotational motion could be freely achieved without overcoming the chain entanglement resistance. Hence, neither the dynamics nor the distribution width of the subglass relaxation (beta- and gamma-relaxation) processes is affected by chain entanglement resulting from annealing, indicating that the local environment of the segments is unchanged.

Abstract:Semicrystalline polymers usually undergo multilevel microstructural evolutions under high-temperature annealing and stretching deformation; this is essential to tailor the physical properties of polymer products in industrial processing. Here, we choose poly(p-dioxanone) (PPDO), a typical biodegradable, biocompatible, and bioresorbable polymer, as a model semicrystalline polymer and investigated its polymorphic structural transition and crystalline lamellar evolution under high-temperature annealing and stretching. High-temperature annealing caused the alpha'-to-alpha phase transition of PPDO, accompanied by the improvement of crystallinity (X-c) and thickening of crystalline lamellae. Tensile strength and Young's modulus of PPDO increased but the breaking strain decreased as the annealing temperature increased. Stretch-induced phase transition of PPDO depended strongly on the initial structure and stretching temperature (T-s). The a form PPDO transformed into its alpha' counterpart during stretching at low T-s. This phase transition was irreversible and did not retain the alpha form with the release of stress. However, no phase transition took place for the alpha-form PPDO stretched at high T-s (>= 40 degrees C). Original lamellae of alpha-form PPDO changed into the fibrillar lamellae during stretching via the melt-recrystallization mechanism.
Effect of chain architecture on the structure, dynamics, and rheology of thermoresponsive poloxamer hydrogels and associated blends

Abstract:Poloxamers, ABA triblock polymers composed of a poly(propylene oxide) (PPO) midblock (B) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) endblocks (A), are widely studied for biomedical applications. Aqueous poloxamer 407 (P407; also referred to as F127) undergoes a solution-to-gel transition with increasing temperature, driven by the formation and ordering of micelles onto periodic lattices; however, the gel temperature and resulting modulus has limited tunability. Here, reverse P407 (RP407), a BAB polymer of the same composition and molar mass but the inverted architecture, is synthesized via anionic polymerization. The micellization and gelation temperatures of RP407 are higher than that of P407 and the PPO endblocks allow for intermicelle bridging; however, both single-component solutions favor body-centered cubic (BCC) packings. Further, aqueous RP407 displays a "soft gel" region with interesting rheological behavior, including viscoelastic aging and thermal hysteresis. Combining P407 and RP407 yields solutions with intermediate transition temperatures and alters the size and micelle packing. While the single-component solutions produce BCC packings, the blends form close-packed structures and larger micelles of higher aggregation numbers. Blends of P407 with an analogous AB diblock (E111P32) display similar behavior, whereas RP407/diblock blends form intermediate-sized BCC-packed micelles. These differences in packing and aggregation alter the local environments within the gels, which could have implications for applications such as drug delivery and protein stabilization.
Aqueous Solutions of Poly(ethylene Oxide)-Poly(n-isopropylacrylamide): Thermosensitive Behavior and Distinct Multiple Assembly Processes

Abstract:Detailed phase transition and conformational changes taking place as a function of temperature in poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PEO-b-PNIPAM) semidiluted aqueous solutions are elucidated in the present study. By the use of elaborate vibrational spectroscopy techniques in combination with two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2Dcos), three transition regions including respective rich domains (<29 °C), loose aggregations (30-36 °C), and dense sphere micelles (>37 °C) are depicted. In particular, subtle variations of hydrogen bonds are detected even under the lower critical solution temperature (LCST), and the respective rich domain regime is marked with strong participation from hydrogen bonding at different concentrations and compositions. Both the formation of intermolecular hydrogen bonds and the less hydration degrees of PNIPAM segments compared with PNIPAM homopolymer at elevated temperatures verify the evolution of PNIPAM from their own domains to loose aggregations with PEO shells. Dense micelles are formed beyond the LCST of PNIPAM, while the outmost PEOs act as buffer layers and postpone the shrinkage of PNIPAM chains. Due to the existence of a buffer layer, higher phase transition temperatures compared with PNIPAM homopolymer are observed.
Thermoresponsivity, Micelle Structure and Thermal-Induced Structural Transition of Amphiphilic Block Copolymer Tuned by Terminal Multiple H-Bonding Units.

Abstract:Constructing noncovalent interactions has been a benign method to tune the stimuli responsivity and assembled structure of polymers in solution; this is essential for controlling the functions and properties of stimuli-responsive materials. Herein, we demonstrate a novel supramolecular strategy to manipulate the cloud point (T-cp) and assembled structure of thermoresponsive polymers in solution by using H-bonding interactions. We use poly(lactide-co-glycolide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b- poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA-PEG-PLGA) as a model thermoresponsive polymer and functionalize its chain terminals by the self-complementary quadruple H-bonding motif, 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone (UPy). UPy end functionalization and increasing PLGA block length decrease the T-cp of copolymer. Both UPy- and nonfunctionalized copolymers form the spherical micelles at low temperature. They undergo the intermicellar aggregation and form large compound micelles during heating; this thermally induced structural transition causes the presence of T-cp. Due to the UPy-UPy H-bonding interactions, UPy end functionalization leads to more copolymer chains to associate in one micelle, thus, enhancing the hydrodynamic, gyration radii, core size, as well as the packing density of PLGA in micelle core and grafting density of PEG on core-shell interface. The decreased T-cp of UPy-functionalized copolymer stemmed from the stronger intermicellar attractions at high temperature. Furthermore, UPyfunctionalized copolymers exhibit higher drug loading content, slower drug release rate, and better separation efficiency in removing the hydrophobic substances from water than PLGA-PEG-PLGA precursors.
