Abstract:Aggregation generally quenches the light emissions of chromophoric molecules. In this review, we demonstrate that 1,1-disubstituted 2,3,4,5-tetraphenyl siloles and 2,5-difunctionalized siloles as well as their polymers exhibit the opposite behaviors. Instead of quenching, aggregation has greatly boosted their photoluminescence quantum yields by up to two orders of magnitude, turning them from faint fluorophores into strong emitters. Such “abnormal” phenomenon of “aggregation-induced emission (AIE)” is attributed to restricted intramolecular rotations of the peripheral phenyl rings against the central silole core, which block the nonradiative channel via the rotational energy relaxation processes and effectively populate the radiative decay of the excitons. Utilizing such a novel effect, siloles and their polymers find an array of applications as: sensors for chemicals, explosives, pH, and biomacromolecules (proteins, DNAs and RNAs), indicators for determining CMC and monitoring layer-by-layer self-assembling, biocompatible fluorogens for cell imaging, visualizing agent for DNA gel electrophoresis, biolabels for immunoassay, stimuli-responsive organic nanomaterials, magnetic fluorescent nanoparticles for potential bio-imaging and -separation, and outstanding materials for efficient OLEDs and PV cells.

Abstract:This review presents an overview on the application of latent fingerprint development techniques in forensic sciences. At present, traditional developing methods such as powder dusting, cyanoacrylate fuming, chemical method, and small particle reagent method, have all been gradually compromised given their emerging drawbacks such as low contrast, sensitivity, and selectivity, as well as high toxicity. Recently, much attention has been paid to the use of fluorescent nanomaterials including quantum dots (QDs) and rare earth upconversion fluorescent nanomaterials (UCNMs) due to their unique optical and chemical properties. Thus, this review lays emphasis on latent fingerprint development based on QDs and UCNMs. Compared to latent fingerprint development by traditional methods, the new methods using fluorescent nanomaterials can achieve high contrast, sensitivity, and selectivity while showing reduced toxicity. Overall, this review provides a systematic overview on such methods.

Abstract:We report how electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of rubrene can be utilized for enhancing the visualization of latent fingerprints in two different modes. The enhancement arises from the spatially selective ECL generation either from the substrate surface uncovered by the fingerprint or the fingerprint itself, designated negative or positive imaging mode, respectively. The negative mode is performed directly in an electrolyte solution containing rubrene and co-reactant. Given that organic residues in the fingerprint deposit make the underlying surface electrochemically inert or less active, ECL reaction occurs only on the surface untouched by the fingertip, generating a negative impression with a dark ridge pattern against the illuminated background. The positive imaging mode is based on the preferential adsorption of rubrene aggregates to the ridge materials via physical attraction; then the fingerprint can glow via ECL reaction in a solution containing co-reactant under an appropriate applied potential.

Abstract:Herein we report the combination of enzyme-linked immunoassay and pattern recognition analysis for extracting both chemical and spatial information from latent fingermarks (LFMs). The development approach basically involves two steps, namely, specific recognition of protein and polypeptide secretions present in the ridge residues of LFMs by horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-labeled antibodies and the HRP-catalyzed chemiluminescent (CL) reaction between luminol and H2O2. The emitted light can spatially resolve the ridges, generating a bright image against the dark object surface for visualization of an LFM. Meanwhile, thanks to the molecular specificity of the immunoassay step, the emission also provides us additional information on the existence of specific substances in LFMs. The developed LFMs are further processed by a set of digital image processing procedures. Quantitative analysis based on minutia features shows that even poorly developed fingermarks can be matched successfully. This work offers the promise of facilitating cross-disciplinary studies between data-processing approaches and fingermark development techniques, such as the extraction of more information from LFM evidence, as well as the establishment of evaluation criteria for an enhancement technique.

Abstract:For over a century, fingerprints have served as a pivotal tool in identification owing to their enduring characteristics and easily apparent features, particularly in the realm of criminal investigations. Latent fingerprints (LFP) are "invisible fingerprints" that are most commonly available at crime scenes and require a rapid, selective, sensitive, and convenient method for detection. However, existing fingerprint development techniques harbour limitations, prompting the exploration of novel approaches that prioritize investigator safety and environmental sustainability. Leveraging the unique photophysical properties of aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) emerges as a promising candidate for on-site analysis of LFP visualization. In this highlight article, we have presented a comparative analysis of various AIEgens (organic compounds, metal complexes, nanoparticles, and polymers) for the development and detection of LFP. Through this examination, insights into the efficiency and potential applications of AIE-based fingerprint development techniques are illuminated. In addition, several strategies have been proposed for circumventing the limitations of existing AIEgens. We hope that this highlight article will encourage more researchers to investigate AIEgens in LFP detection which could contribute to forensic science.

Abstract:An efficient method has been developed for visualizing latent fingerprints by spatially selective electropolymerization of luminol on the ITO electrode. The fingerprint deposited on the electrode surface functions as a mask so that polyluminol is formed on the bare electrode surface. Therefore, electrochemiluminescence is only generated between the ridges of fingerprint, eventually yielding a negative ECL image. This method is easy to operate and safe to examiners. In addition, the second- and third-level details of fingerprints can be well resolved, indicating the potential application for personal identification and forensic investigation.

Abstract:Creation of AIEgens with high brightness is compactly related to acquiring optimum AIE capabilities and still faces challenges. This study proposes an ingenious structurally regulative approach for preparing ultrabright AIEgens, taking iridium complexes as the model. The incremental rotational activity of substituents obtained by fine adjustment of the stereoscopic configuration efficaciously activates the AIE of iridium complexes and synchronously imparts high-brightness luminescence. Subsequently, benefitting from the ultrabright AIE, high-resolution visualization of latent fingerprints (LFPs) is achieved on diverse substrates by transient immersion in a solution of the AIE-active iridium complex (Ir3) for 60 s. The LFPs stained by Ir3 are integral and distinct enough to possess level 1–3 detail features, which allow precisely realizing personal identification. The LFP photograph emerges inconspicuous attenuation of contrast when aged under ambient light for 10 days and then being continuously irradiated with high-power ultraviolet light for 1 h, reflecting extraordinary aging resistance. Notably, the ultrabright AIE of Ir3 with room-temperature phosphorescence feature successfully achieves enhanced visualization of local fingerprint details with ultrahigh contrast. This LFP visualization protocol based on the ultrabright AIEgens is practical and provides a reliable solution for forensic investigations in actual scenarios.

Abstract:A water-soluble probe, TPA-1OH, with aggregation-induced emission activity is synthesized and used for expedient real-time fluorescence <i>in situ</i> visualization of latent fingerprints (LFPs). A TPA-1OH aqueous solution exhibits nonfluorescence in pure water while strong fluorescence upon molecular aggregation induced by addition of poor solvent. Fluorescence images of LFPs on a variety of substrates, including rough surfaces such as walls, bricks, and paper, are developed under 405 nm light, by soaking in or spraying with a TPA-1OH aqueous solution (30 μM) without any necessity of organic cosolvents and post-treatment steps. The probe is noncytotoxic at a concentration lower than 50 μM. The development process of LFPs is demonstrated by real-time fluorescence <i>in situ</i> imaging. The exponential relationship between the relative fluorescence intensity and time is deduced from the fitting curve. The LFP images developed by TPA-1OH are evident and intact enough to allow that the level 1-3 details are displayed and analyzed. Noteworthily, the level 3 details of LFPs such as the fingerprint ridge width and the characteristics of the sweat pores are evidently visible under fluorescence microscopy. Even the nanoscopic details exceeding level 3 are visualized under super-resolution microscopy with sub-50 nm optical resolution.

Abstract:Existing latent fingerprint developers achieve marvelous progress during the past decades. However, most of these methods mainly consider single target substance, which may face difficulties in latent fingerprint imaging when the corresponding substance is absent from latent fingerprint traces. To alleviate this issue, we propose a novel single-molecule multi-target green fluorescent probe , TPE-NI-NHS, which could target both lipids and amino acids through physical adsorption and chemically bonding under mild conditions, respectively. Specifically, tetraphenylethylene and active ester group in TPE-NI-NHS are connected at two ends of the naphthalimide core, which provide perfect aggregation-induced emission, accurate and quick reaction with amino acids, lipophilic properties , and green fluorescence emission. As expected, TPE-NI-NHS achieves green fluorescent imaging for latent fingerprints contained different contents of lipids and amino acids with high quality, high sensitivity, and high contrast under mild conditions. In summary, TPE-NI-NHS developer provides multiple targeting features, novel imaging principles and mild imaging process to latent fingerprint detections.

Non-Destructive Enhancement of Latent Fingerprints on Stainless Steel Surfaces by Electrochemiluminescence

Abstract:Visualization and detection of latent fingerprints (LFPs) on metal surfaces are of highly practical importance, e.g., in identifying gun cartridges. We report herein the visualization of LFPs on stainless steel surfaces by electrochemiluminescence (ECL). Since organic residues, such as fatty acids, in the fingerprint deposit make the underlying surface electrochemically inert or less active, an ECL reaction occurs only on the metal portions untouched by the fingertip, hence generating a negative image of the fingerprint. The popular ECL reaction solution, consisting of ruthenium(II) tris(2,2'-bipyridyl) and tri-n-propylamine, was used for this imaging purpose. Factors, including the applied potential and the concentration of ECL luminophore, as well as the stability of ECL negative images, were investigated to achieve a satisfactory visualization enhancement. This imaging approach is simple, rapid, non-invasive, and no pre-treatment either on the background or on the fingerprint itself is needed. It constitutes a powerful tool for visualizing LFPs on metal surfaces. This method was also demonstrated to be suitable for enhancing LFPs collected from various surfaces.
Instantaneous High-Resolution Visual Imaging of Latent Fingerprints in Water Using Color-Tunable AIE Pincer Complexes

Abstract:Instant visualization of latent fingerprints is developed by using a series of water-soluble terpyridine zinc complexes as aggregation-induced emission probes in pure water, under UV light or ambient sunlight. By simply soaking, or spraying with an aqueous solution of the probe, bright yellow fluorescence images with high contrast and resolution are readily developed on various surfaces including tinfoil, glass, paper, steel, leather, and ceramic tile. Remarkably, latent fingerprints can be visualized within seconds including details of whorl and sweat pores. The color of emission can be tuned from blue to orange by modifying the pincer ligands, allowing direct imaging under sunlight. These inexpensive, water-resistant, and color-tunable probes provide a practical approach for latent fingerprints recording and analysis, security protection, as well as criminal investigation in different scenarios.

Abstract:Based on carbazole derivatives, a new fluorescent dye G-D was constructed. White fluorescent fingerprint powder was constructed by proportionally blending montmorillonite with G-D and the previously synthesized dyes (B-D and R-D). White fluorescent fingerprint powder is obvious in the dark and can be subjected to minimal fluorescent background interference. The white fluorescent fingerprint powder was successfully used to develop latent fingerprints left on various surfaces, including glass, tin foil, marble, acrylic plate with bright fluorescence, painted wood and coins. Impressively, the white fluorescent fingerprint powder also has excellent applications in developing aged fingerprints and replication. For complex criminal investigation activities, the white fingerprint powder with high resolution, wide applicability and real-time development is a competitive visualization means.

Abstract:Herein,a facile and effective approach was proposed for visualizing latent fingerprints（LFPs） on two kinds of conductive surfaces by spatially selective electrochemical deposition of Prussian blue（PB） thin films.This strategy exploited the fingerprint residue as an insulating mask and the PB thin films were only generated on the bare surface including the valleys between the papillary ridges,which produced a negative image of LFPs with high resolution up to the third level information.The surface morphology of PB films was characterized by the field emission scanning electron microscopy（FE-SEM）.This enhancement technique showed promising performance in selected materials of practical interest.

Abstract:Efficient and accurate visual identification of latent fingerprints is crucial in areas such as criminal investigation and information security. Aggregation-induced luminescence (AIE) fluorescent materials are widely used in this field because of their strong fluorescence and easy functionalization. They have attracted significant interest and emerged as a promising area since the introduction of the AIE concept. Here a new water-soluble fluorescent nanoparticle, flu-p-DITPA, through amphiphilic self-assembly with amphiphilic polymers macro-CTA-mPEG2000 (P1) and exhibits typical AIE properties. The core molecule, indo-DITPA, derived from the triphenylamine backbone, was obtained through rational molecular design and theoretical calculations, and the calculated results were confirmed with experimental results. The photophysical properties of indo-DITPA and flu-p-DITPA have been meticulously studied, revealing their remarkable characteristics. Taking advantage of their favorable photophysical properties, good water solubility, and biocompatibility, the researchers have devised a simple yet effective method for visualizing latent fingerprints (LFPs) with high resolution under UV light. This method enables the easy decoding of latent fingerprint information at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. Importantly, this technique is simple, rapid, and user-friendly, marking a significant step forward in the field of forensic science and fingerprint analysis.
Cross-Linking Induced Emission of Polymer Micelles for High-Contrast Visualization Level 3 Details of Latent Fingerprints

Abstract:Rationally developing an intelligent tool for high-contrast fluorescence imaging of latent fingerprints (LFPs) is gaining much concern in many applications such as medical diagnostics and forensic investigations. Herein, the off–on fluorescent polymer micelles (PMs) have been rationally designed and synthesized for high-contrast fluorescence imaging of LFPs through the cross-linking reaction of hydrazine (N2H4) and aldehyde group of polymer. Excitingly, the cross-linking (N2H4) induced emission of PMs has the property of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), which could effectively address the notorious aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effects of conventional organic dyes. In addition, the cross-linking strategy can not only improve structural stability of PMs but also enhance its fluorescence brightness. The experiment results demonstrated that PMs showed high water dispersibility (100% aqueous solution), high selectivity, large Stokes shift (∼150 nm), good photostability, and excellent long-term stability. Because of the hydrophobic interaction between the PMs and fingerprint components, the PMs preferentially adhered onto the ridges of fingerprint, and then cross-linking (N2H4) induced emission properties endowed the PMs for high-contrast imaging of LFPs in different substrates, especially the levels 1–3 details of LFPs. Abstract:Fluorescent fingerprint powders can achieve colour‐changing visual development of latent fingerprints by grease response with high contrast and applicability. The fluorescent fingerprint powders cause no damage to genetic information, and can be used in complex criminal investigation environments. Comprehensive Summary A new fluorescent fingerprint powder (DFF‐MMT) was formulated by blending cyclic chalcone dye DFF with montmorillonite (MMT), which can develop latent fingerprints (LFPs) with exceptional resolution and contrast on various surfaces, including ordinary glass, tin foil, marble, LED screens, and materials with distinct colors and fluorescent backgrounds. The fluorescence of DFF‐MMT transforms from orange to bright yellow with LFPs, allowing for a flawless visualization of fingerprints on uneven surfaces or materials with static electricity. Impressively, fingerprints developed by DFF‐MMT can be stored for over 21 months and conveniently duplicated. The developed LFPs by DFF‐MMT still keep high quality under the influence of aquatic condition, illumination and thermal effects. DFF‐MMT also exhibits benefits, such as affordability, real‐time, high‐resolution, high‐contrast development and no damage to DNA, making it an ideal choice for sophisticated criminal investigations.

Abstract:Identification of endogenous and exogenous chemicals contained in latent fingerprints is important for forensic science in order to acquire evidence of criminal identities and contacts with specific chemicals. Mass spectrometry has emerged as a powerful technique for such applications without any derivatization or fluorescent tags. Among these techniques, MALDI (Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization) provides small beam size but has interferences with MALDI matrix materials, which cause ion suppressions as well as limited spatial resolution resulting from uneven distribution of MALDI matrix crystals with different sizes. LAET (Laser Activated Electron Tunneling) described in this work offers capabilities for chemical imaging through electron-directed soft ionization. A special film of semiconductors has been designed for collection of fingerprints. Nanoparticles of bismuth cobalt zinc oxide were compressed on a conductive metal substrate (Al or Cu sticky tape) under 10 MPa pressure. Resultant uniform thin films provide tight and shining surfaces on which fingers are impressed. Irradiation of ultraviolet laser pulses (355 nm) on the thin film instantly generates photoelectrons that can be captured by adsorbed organic molecules and subsequently cause electron-directed ionization and fragmentation. Imaging of latent fingerprints is achieved by visualization of the spatial distribution of these molecular ions and structural information-rich fragment ions. Atomic electron emission together with finely tuned laser beam size improve spatial resolution. With the LAET technique, imaging analysis not only can identify physical shapes but also reveal endogenous metabolites present in females and males, detect contacts with prohibited substances, and resolve overlapped latent fingerprints.
