Abstract:A new functionalized heteroleptic iridium complex coordinated with 1-phenylisoquinoline（1-piq） and a functionalized β-diketone（G1）,Ir（1-piq）2G1,was synthesized and characterized by 1H-NMR,mass spectrometry and elemental analysis.The larger conjugation of the replacement of acetylacetone（acac） by a functionalized β-diketonate ligand led to a significant decrease in the HOMO level toward vacuum level,while Ir（1-piq）2G1 and Ir（1-piq）2（acac） showed red phosphorescent emissions of about 620 nm in dichloromethane solution.The phosphorescent polymer light-emitting devices were achieved,with the complexes incorporated with polyfluorene（PFO） as a host polymer doped with 30% of 5-（4-biphenylyl）-2-（4-tert-butylphenyl）-1,3,4-oxadiazole（PBD） as electron transport material.The energy transfer mechanism of the devices was also discussed.The lower EL performance of Ir（1-piq）2G1 is ascribed to the inter-ligand energy transfer,indicating that it is important to control the energy level of the cyclometalated and ancillary ligands.

Abstract:The effect of the molecular structures of a series of π-conjugated rigid rod oligomers in phenylene vinylene dimers on electronic structures has been investigated by utilizing electrochemistry and spectroscopy along with quantum chemical calculations. The redox potential of oligomers varies with different substituents. The ionization potential changes from 5.49 to 4.92eV, and the electron affinity from 2.59 to 2.29eV, indicating that the substituents could considerably alter both the HOMO and LUMO levels.

Abstract:A cruciform-shaped oligo(phenylenevinylene) (OPV) with a phosphorescent rhenium(I) chromophore incorporated at the centre and grafted triphenylamines around the periphery was designed as a new organic photovoltaic material, in which the chelation of rhenium(I) to the cruciform successfully constructs a three-dimensional intramolecular charge transfer system and extends the exciton lifetime; as a result, the rhenium-OPV complex shows a power conversion efficiency almost two times that of the metal ion-free parent compound.

Abstract:Poly(l-pentyne)s containing biphenyl and phthalimido pendant groups with different spacer lengths {P1(m); -[HC=C(CH2)(3)O-Biph-OCO(CH2)(m)N(CO)(2)C6H4](n)-, Biph=4,4'-biphenylyl; m = 7, 10} are synthesized in satisfactory yields by WCl6-Ph4Sn catalyst in toluene at elevated temperatures. The structures and properties of the polymers are characterized and evaluated by IR, NMR, TGA, DSC, POM, and XRD analyses. Both of the polymers are thermally stable (T-d greater than or less than 300 degrees C) and exhibit nematicity at high temperatures. Their phthalimido groups are converted into amino groups by hydrolysis, which can, after acidification, complex with lead(II) bromide to furnish polyacetylene-perovskite hybrids in high yields. The organic components contribute good solubility to the hybrids, while the perovskite framework induces the polyacetylene chains to align within the inorganic sheets. The hybrids emit a strong UV light of 374 nm upon photoexcitation, whose quantum yield increases with an increase in the spacer length. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:A series of novel poly(heteroarylene methines) containing alternating aromatic and quinoid phenylene-thiophene moieties in the main chain were synthesized. They were readily soluble in common organic solvents, and revealed tunable band gaps. Several low band gap polymers were obtained when octoxy or decoxy groups were applied as pendent groups of phenylene unit. And relevant octoxy-substituted poly(heteroarylene methins), PDTDOBQ-Me, PDTDOBQ-ORBr and PDTDOBQ-NO2, showed electrochemical band gaps of 1.60, 1.68 and 1.76eV, respectively.

Abstract:A simple and effective strategy for synthesis of bis-dipolar trimeric OPVs (a–g) with same push–pull electron groups at the two ends is presented. Their photophysical and electrochemical properties were investigated by UV–vis, fluorescence spectroscopies, and voltammetry techniques. A successful tuning in the emission color was achieved and the LUMO energy level was found to correlate with the Hammett constant of the respective substituents, providing a powerful strategy for prediction of the photoelectrical properties of the new chromophores.

Abstract:Pentacosacyclene ( PC ) and pentacosacyclene tetraimide ( PCTI ) were obtained in concise syntheses involving radial extension of tridecacyclene. PC is an electron-rich hydrocarbon with a C 88 π-conjugated framework, whereas PCTI is electron-deficient and contains a C 96 N 4 core. PC and PCTI both have non-planar saddle-shaped conformations, and PC was found to self-assemble with C 60 to produce a uniquely structured supramolecular crystalline phase. In solution, PCTI undergoes eight single-electron reductions, while PC exhibits two reversible oxidations and three reversible reduction events. Chemically generated anions of PC and PCTI showcase extended near-infrared to infrared absorptions, with the lowest energy bands observed for at > 3200 nm for the PCTI monoanion and ca. 2800 nm for the PCTI dianion. The electronic and redox properties of pentacosacyclenes can be explained using molecular orbital and valence bond theories, as originating from changes in local aromaticity of five- and eight-membered rings.

Abstract:We have used Raman spectroscopy to study the molecular and electronic structures of the radical cations and dications of carbon-bridged oligo(para-phenylenevinylene)s (COPVn, n = 1-6) possessing consecutive fused pentagons and hexagons, up to 19, along with COPV derivatives having electron-donating and -withdrawing groups. This study was made possible by the outstanding stability of the charged states of COPVs. We could untangle the effects of π-conjugation in the planar structure on the Raman frequency by distinguishing it from other structural effects, such as strain in the vinylene groups shared by the two pentagons. The analyses showed that the radical cations have benzo-quinoidal structures confined in the center of the molecule, as well as benzo-aromatic rings at the terminal sites. In contrast, dications of COPVn longer than n = 3 exhibit a biradicaloid character because of the recovery of aromaticity in the central rings and quinoidal rings at the terminal positions. These biradicaloids favor a singlet nature in their ground electronic states because of the double spin polarization. The introduction of electron-donating and -withdrawing groups on the termini of a COPV core affords, upon oxidation or reduction, a fully delocalized class III mixed valence system because of the high degree of conjugation of the COPV platform, which favors extensive charge delocalization.
Two Photon Absorption Property of a PPV Oligomer with Central Biphenyl Bridge and Peripheral Carbazole Substituents

Abstract:The effect of cruciform structure on the two photon absorption action cross-section of fluorescence chromophore was reported. 1,4-Di(9'-ethyl-carbazolyl)-3'-vinylbenzene(R1) is a classic two photon absorption(TPA) chromophore with D-pi-D structure. By linking two TPA chains with a biphenyl bridge, the obtained cruciform molecule(1) exhibits evidently larger two photon absorption action cross-section (sigma') than its single-chain counterpart. For example, in 10(-4) mol/L toluene solution, cruciform 1 shows a sigma' value of 491.0 x 10(-50) cm(4) . s, while the sigma' value of R1 is only 137.5 x 10(-50) cm(4) . s. The amplification of sigma' was ascribed to the cruciform structure, which rendered the TPA chromophores with cross dipole arrangement and curbed the fluorescence quenching in concentrated solutions.

Abstract:Through variation of the chemical route, a conjugated co-polymer has been prepared in a predominantly cis-configuration and a predominantly trans configuration respectively. Pump and probe Kerr ellipsometry is used to probe the behaviour of each in solution compared to a model trimer compound, The results indicate that isomerism plays an important part in the excited state dynamics of these materials in solution.

Abstract:Novel bis(arylamine-substituted) oligo(ladder-type pentaphenylene)s 1-3, with bridge lengths estimated to be 2.2, 4.2, and 6.3 nm, respectively, have been developed, and the model compound 4 with a mono-arylamine substituent was also synthesized. Their absorption spectra in different solvents are almost identical, while distinct bathochromic shifts of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra were observed with increasing solvent polarity due to the polarized excited states. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) spectra display a two-step oxidation of the bridged diamines in compound 1, which suggests that the electron and charge delocalize in mixed-valence (MV) cation 1+* and that both redox centers can communicate through the pentaphenylene bridge. Only unresolved curves in CV and DPV spectra were observed in the first two oxidation processes of diamines 2 and 3, indicating that the bridges are too long for efficient delocalization over the entire molecules and the radical cations localize at each arylamine center. This finding was further supported by chemical oxidation with SbCl5 and studies of the corresponding UV-vis-NIR absorption spectra of compounds 1-4. A significant intervalence charge-transfer (IVCT) band around 5283 cm-1 (1893 nm) was observed in 1+*. This is the first report of such a highly intense IVCT band in the NIR region with intensity similar to that of the visible band of the radicals, enabling further analysis of the CT process and the coupling matrix element V, classifying 1+* as a class II derivative (V = 1.6 kcal/mol). This study may offer an effective way to improve the understanding of charge transfer and charge-carrier transport in various conjugated oligomers or polymers and facilitate their ongoing exploration in optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:p-Quinodimethane (p-QDM) is a fundamental building block for the design of π-conjugated systems with low band gap and open-shell biradical character. However, synthesis of extended p-QDMs has usually suffered from their intrinsic high reactivity and poor solubility. In this work, benzannulation together with terminal cyano-substitution was demonstrated to be an efficient approach for the synthesis of a series of soluble and stable tetracyano-oligo(N-annulated perylene)quinodimethanes nPer-CN (n = 1-6), with the longest molecule having 12 para-linked benzenoid rings! The geometry and electronic structures of these oligomers were investigated by steady-state and transient absorption spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, electron spin resonance, superconducting quantum interference device, and FT Raman spectroscopy assisted by density functional theory calculations. They showed tunable ground states, varying from a closed-shell quinoidal structure for monomer, to a singlet biradical for dimer, trimer, and tetramer, and to a triplet biradical for pentamer and hexamer. Large two-photon absorption cross-section values were observed in the near-infrared range, which also exhibited a clear chain-length dependence.

Abstract:A Hagihara–Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction has been used to synthesize a new copolymer consisting of electron-accepting perylene bisimide (PBI) and electron-donating oligo(p-phenylene ethynylene) (OPE) units. Photoinduced singlet energy transfer and charge separation have been studied in solution via steady-state absorption, excitation, fluorescence, and theoretical calculations. The electron transfer from the OPE excited state competes with a singlet energy transfer state to the PBI unit. The results show that the excitation of the OPE unit in the polymer results in energy and electron transfers, while the excitation of the PBI unit in the polymer only result in electron transfer.

Abstract:Structural, electronic, and optical properties of a series of π-conjugated chain type oligomers composed of the bipyridyl, ethynyl and thiophenyl fragments are studied by advanced quantum chemical methods. The properties of the P-oligomers (P1–P4, with 1–4 repeating units, respectively) and the corresponding DP-oligomers (DP2–DP4, with 2–4 repeating units, respectively, but without the terminal thiophenyl fragments) are compared. The geometry optimization results at B3LYP/6-31G level show that all the fragments involved in both the P-oligomers and DP-oligomers in the ground state exhibit a zigzag chain within the molecular plane. The TD-DFT calculations reveal that the dipole-allowed lowest-lying X1A→A1B absorption band of each oligomer possesses the π→π∗ transition characters. The geometry structures of P1, P2 and DP2 in the excited state have been studied by the CIS method, the fluorescence of them revealed by TD-DFT method is originated from the 1[ππ∗] excited state. Upon increasing the number of the repeating unit, there is a progressive lowering in HOMO–LUMO gaps, being consistent with the red shifts in the lowest-lying absorptions and fluorescence. The ionization potentials (IPs) and electron affinities (EAs) of the polymer are obtained by the extrapolation method. The calculated IPs of DP-polymer are lower than those of P-polymer and the EAs of DP-polymer are higher than those of the P-polymer, which indicates that the DP-polymer is more suitable for electron transferring and hole creating material.

Abstract:The electronic and charge transport properties of a cruciform pi-conjugated molecule 3,6-diphenyl-1,2,4,5-(2',2 "-diphenyl)-benzobisazole were investigated with density functional theory at B3LYP/6-31G (d) level. The molecular reorganization energy and charge transfer integral between the nearest neighbour molecule were calculated. The hole and electron mobilities are 0.31 and 0.11 cm(2) . V-1 . s(-1), respectively. Hole transport is mainly through the benzene "edge-to-face" interaction at terphenyl directions and displaced pi-pi stacking interaction of molecular center. While the main path for electron transport is the pi-pi stacking interaction in the benzobisazole direction. Mulliken charge analysis for the cationic and ionic state of molecule reveal that the hole and electron are mainly delocalized at terphenyl and benzobisazole directions, respectively. Such hole and electron transport at cruciform direction would be benefit for the balanced charge and electron transport, which might give the hints for practical applications in organic photoelectronic devices and design of novel charge transport materials.
Ground, Excited Structures and Photoelectronic Properties of Poly(P-Phenylenevinylene) Oligomers with Biphenyl Bridge

Abstract:Ground and excited state structures of several poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) oligomers that contain a biphenyl bridge were fully optimized by density functional theory (DFT) and the configuration interaction singles (CIS) method, respectively. The most rational geometric structures for the ground state, the excited state and frontier molecular orbitals were obtained. The absorption and emission properties of the oligomers were then calculated using the semi-empirical Zemer's intermediate neglect of differential overlap (ZINDO) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). We analyzed the effect of an increase in the biphenyl chain length on frontier molecular orbitals and the energy gap. Results indicate that absorption and emission properties hardly change as the length of the biphenyl chain increases. A cross configuration between neighboring PPV oligomer chains and the degree of intrachain twist becomes increasingly obvious. Molecular symmetry is reduced and the pi-pi stacking effect is weakened among these types of conjugated molecules in a solid. This is perhaps the most important factor for an increase in the fluorescence quantum efficiency of light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:This paper reports the design, synthesis, two-photon absorption (TPA) properties, and frontier molecular orbital (FMO) features of a new class of cruciforms These new cruciforms utilize the anthracene ring as a pi-center and exhibit very large and significantly enhanced two-photon absorption cross sections (delta) that are two to four times as large as the sum of the delta values of the two corresponding linear analogues over a relatively wide range of wavelengths (740-900 nm). Quantum chemical calculations and solvatochromic behaviors reveal that donor-acceptor-substituted anthracene-centered cruciforms show spatially separated HOMO and LUMO. Although the enhancement of delta in anthracene-centered cruciforms seems to be not relative to their FMO Features, this is thoroughly different from the known characteristics of benzene-centered analogues showing no enhancement of delta. On considering that the only difference in these cruciforms is the pi-Center, it is primarily concluded that the anthracene core plays a crucial role in the enhancement of delta
