Abstract:Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) promise highly efficient lighting and display technologies. We introduce a new class of linear donor-bridge-acceptor light-emitting molecules, which enable solution-processed OLEDs with near-100% internal quantum efficiency at high brightness. Key to this performance is their rapid and efficient utilization of triplet states. Using time-resolved spectroscopy, we establish that luminescence via triplets occurs within 350 nanoseconds at ambient temperature, after reverse intersystem crossing to singlets. We find that molecular geometries exist at which the singlet-triplet energy gap (exchange energy) is close to zero, so that rapid interconversion is possible. Calculations indicate that exchange energy is tuned by relative rotation of the donor and acceptor moieties about the bridge. Unlike other systems with low exchange energy, substantial oscillator strength is sustained at the singlet-triplet degeneracy point.

Abstract:Two solution-processable, carbazole-based iridium dendrimers (Ir-1 and Ir-2) were synthesized and characterized. The presence of carbazolyl substituent on the cyclometallated ligand resulted in improved solubility, good control over intermolecular interactions, and improved hole transport properties. The triazole ancillary ligand led to improved electron transport properties. When the dendrimers were employed as host-free light-emitting layers in the OLEDs, the devices exhibited a low turn-on voltage of 5.4 V. The maximal external quantum efficiencies and luminous efficiency of the devices obtained from Ir-1 and Ir-2 were 5.1% and 3.3 cd A(-1) and 7.9% and 4.4 cd A(-1), respectively, both with saturated red emission (CIE coordinates, 0.663, 0.332). The devices have a structure of indium tin oxide/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythio phene)/dendrimer/1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbenzimiazole-2-yl)benzene/cesium fluoride/aluminum. Given ease of synthesis and good device performance, these iridium dendrimers can be used to fully exploit the potential of low-cost OLEDs, leading to more applications in high-efficiency OLEDs. Abstract:In this study, a series of organic conjugated oligomers containing 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) and aromatic groups are synthesized, which are as follows: 2,5-di(methyl benzoate)-3,4-ethylenedioxy-thiophene (1EDOT-2B-COOCH3), 5,5'-di(methyl benzoate)-2,2'-bi(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (2EDOT-2B-COOCH3), 5,5"-di(methyl benzoate)-2,2':5', 2"-ter(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (3EDOT-2B-COOCH3), and 5,5.'-di(methyl benzoate)-2,2': 5', 2": 5", 2"'-quater(3,4ethylenedioxythiophene) (4EDOT-2B-COOCH3). Using these oligomers as active materials, flexible organic electrochromic devices are fabricated. The device structure is indium tin oxide-PET plastic slide (ITO-PET)/active layer/conducting gel/ITO-PET, and the electrochromic properties of oligomers are investigated. These oligomers exhibit reversible color changes upon electrochemical doping and dedoping. The highest optical contrast is exhibited by 4EDOT-2B-COOCH3, which is 75.2% at 700 nm.
A Novel Series Of P-N Diblock Light-Emitting Copolymers Based On Oligothiophenes And 1,4-Bis(Oxadiazolyl)-2,5-Dialkyloxybenzene

Abstract:A new series of p-n diblock conjugated copolymers consisting of alternate 1,4-bis(oxadiazolyl)-2,5-dialkyloxybenzene and oligothiophenes with one to three thiophene rings (P1-P3) have been synthesized. The polymers have well-defined structures and exhibit good thermal stability with the onset decomposition temperatures in nitrogen at around 300 degrees C. The glass transition temperature (T-g) of the polymers decreases with increasing the length of oligothiophene blocks. Both the absorption spectra and photoluminescence spectra shift to longer wavelength with increase in the length of oligothiophene blocks. The emissive color of the polymers could be tuned from blue to green to orange just by increasing the number of thiophene rings in the oilgothiophene blocks from one to three. No obvious change in reduction potential is found for the polymers with variation in the length of oligothiophene blocks. The reduction potential E-1/2 of the polymers is measured by cyclic voltammetry to be around -1.7 V vs SCE, comparable to those of poly(cyanoterephthalyidene) (CN-PPV) and other good electron-transporting materials. The oxidation potential of the polymers can be reduced remarkably by increasing the length of oligothiophene blocks. The oxidation potential E-1/2 Of P3 is measured to be 1.25 V with the onset potential at 1.0 V vs SCE. These values are comparable to those of some hole-injection favorable electroluminescent polymers. The results prove that the p-n diblock structure may be a promising molecular design for synthetically tuning the HOMO and LUMO of conjugated polymers.

Abstract:A donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated monomer (ST-BBT) constructed from the swivel-cruciform configuration of 5,5' - bibenzothiadiazole acceptor core and thiophene donor arm was synthesized via common chemical reactions. The corresponding polymer (pST-BBT) was successfully electrodeposited onto ITO glass via cyclic voltammetry (CV) method. Meanwhile, the linear-structure analogue (pST-BT) containing benzothiadiazole as acceptor unit and thiophene as donor unit was also obtained as reference. We investigated their electrochemical and optical properties, surface morphology, and electrochromic performances, respectively. Notably, pST-BBT exhibited the faster response speed (0.5s for discoloration and 2.5s for coloration) than pST-BT (1.0s for discoloration and 8.5s for coloration) under the same conditions. The introduction of 5,5' -bibenzothiadiazole with swivelcruciform configuration into the polymer backbone helped to optimize the surface morphology, speed up the ion diffusion process and even possess the possible microporous structure, which were all beneficial to enhance the electrochromic response speed. The swivel-cruciform molecular configuration was a promising structural strategy to construct the high-performanced electrochromic materials. (C) 2018 The Electrochemical Society.

Spectroscopic and Electrochemical Study of A Novel Blue Electroluminescent P-N Diblock Conjugated Copolymer

Abstract:A novel p-n diblock copolymer, poly[N-(2'-ethylhexyl)-carbazole-3,6-diyl-1 ",3 ",4 "-oxadiazole-2 ",5 "-diyl-2''',5'''-dioctyloxy-1''', 4'''phenylene-1'''',3'''',4''''-oxadiazole-2'''',5''''-diyl] (PCOPO) composed of an electron-rich moiety carbazole and an electron-deficient unit aromatic oxadiazole was synthesized aiming at balancing the abilities of conducting holes and electrons. Electrochemical analyses by cyclic voltammetry indicate that PCOPO can be reversibly n-doped and irreversibly p-doped. The cathodic sweep reveals that the reduction involves two-electron process with respect to the successive reduction of oxadiazole rings and carbazole moieties in the polymer chain. The highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO) energy levels of the polymer are estimated to be 5.60 and 2.66 eV from the onset of oxidation and reduction potentials, respectively. The band gap energy of the polymer estimated by the electrochemical measurement (2.94 eV) is in good agreement with that from the optical method (2.82 eV). The photoluminescence (PL) of film samples shows that the polymer emits greenish-blue light (475 nm). The PL of solutions is concentration-dependent. In dilute solutions, the PL emission is from the singlet exciton transition, whereas in the concentrated solutions, it is mainly originated from excimers, The excimer formation is related to the incorporation of oxadiazole rings into the polymer backbone, which can enhance the interchain interactions. Both photophysical and electronic properties demonstrate that the polymer may be a promising candidate material for the fabrication of an efficient blue light-emitting device.

Abstract:A cruciform-shaped oligo(phenylenevinylene) (OPV) with a phosphorescent rhenium(I) chromophore incorporated at the centre and grafted triphenylamines around the periphery was designed as a new organic photovoltaic material, in which the chelation of rhenium(I) to the cruciform successfully constructs a three-dimensional intramolecular charge transfer system and extends the exciton lifetime; as a result, the rhenium-OPV complex shows a power conversion efficiency almost two times that of the metal ion-free parent compound.

Abstract:A novel series of indole-based conjugated oligomers were synthesized by Wittig-Horner-Emmons olefination from the aryl-bridged bisindole aldehydes and the corresponding bisphosphonates. The introduction of indole into the light-emitting materials made these oligmers exhibit favorable properties. The), were thermally stable, and the UV-vis spectra of the oligomers could be modulated by the arylenevinylene units; their PL and EL spectra also showed similar properties that can be further modulated. The highest luminance achieved in a device with the configuration ITO/PEDOT:PSS/oligomer/Ba/Al was 2536 cd/m(2) at 7.5 V for oligomer P6, and the highest external EL quantum efficiency of 0.39% and luminous efficiency of 0.97 cd/A were attained by oligomer P1.

Abstract:A series of new iridium dendrimers comprised of bifunctional charge transport peripheral groups have been designed and facilely synthesized. The relationship between the structures and their photophysical, electrochemical and electrophosphorescent performances is investigated. Through the incorporation of rigid electron-transporting phosphine oxide groups and/or hole-transporting arylamine units, the new complexes all have good thermal stabilities with high glass-transition temperature up to 284°C. Besides, the peripheries sufficiently shield the emissive core from the intermolecular interactions and prevent luminance quenching in neat films. Solution-processed phosphorescent organic light-emitting device (PhOLED) based on bipolar phosphor 2 as neat emitter achieves a maximum current efficiency of 12.4cdA−1 with Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage coordinates of (0.57, 0.42), and the value remains at 11.5cdA−1 at a practical luminance of 1000cdm−2. This low roll-off can be attributed to the bipolar nature of the emitter. This indicates that rational incorporation of charge-transporting moieties into the sphere of iridium(III) core is a simple and effective approach to develop efficient host-free phosphors for solution-processable nondoped PhOLEDs.

Abstract:Two 3D monodisperse oligofluorenes with non-conjugated triphenylamine-based cores have been synthesized by Friedel-Crafts copolycondensation reaction. The oligomers, PF3-TPA and PF3-TPA(3), consist of three fluorene pentamer arms that are connected non-conjugately through a triphenylamine (TPA) and 1,3,5-tris(triphenylamino)benzene core (TPA(3)), respectively, at the 9-position of the central fluorene of the pentafluorene arms. The coplanar structures of the cores and the linkages at the centre of the pentafluorene arms produced a 3D structure of oligomers. This specific structure efficiently retarded the crystallization tendencies of the pentafluorene arms and gave the materials completely amorphous morphological structures. Both oligomers emit deep-blue fluorescence with high efficiencies in thin films (phi(pl-film) = 67 % for PF3-TPA(3) and 86% for PF3-TPA). The introduction of triphenylamine units into the core promoted the hole-injection ability while not obviously scarificing the electron-injection ability of the oligomers. The multi-layer devices ITO/PEDOT-PSS/PF3-TPA(3) and PF3-TPA/TPBI/LiF/Al were fabricated to investigate the electroluminescence (EL) properties of the two oligomers. Both oligomers showed a low turn-on voltage of 4 V. The luminances reached 1946 cd/m(2) at 7.5 V in the PF3-TPA(3) device and 1055 cd/m(2) at 8 V in the PF3-TPA device. The EL efficiencies at this luminance were 1.63 and 1.57 cd/A, respectively.

Abstract:Organic multifunctional luminescent materials have drawn growing attention due to their diverse emissive mechanism and potential application in luminescent field. Herein, a series of cyanobenzene-decorated dimethylacridine-quinoline conjugates is designed and synthesized, which exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), aggregation-induced emission (AIE), polymorphism and multicolor mechanochromic luminescence (MCL) with high contrast beyond 75 nm. Significantly, structure-property investigations via the in-depth analysis of molecular conformations and three-dimensional supramolecular framework of the polymorphic crystals demonstrate that the diverse conformations and abundant noncovalent interactions have a predominant impact on aggregation-dependent TADF property and emission wavelength. The quasi-equatorial conformational electron-donating unit and quasi-planar structural electron-withdrawing segment in aggregation states of the emitter are beneficial for accelerating the rate of the reverse intersystem crossing, enhancing TADF character, and promoting the emission with a bathochromic shift. The organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) employing these emitters achieve good device performance with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 14.6%.

Abstract:A novel series of oligomers consisting of thiophene as a p-type unit and oxadiazole as an n-type unit were separately synthesized. On the basis of the characterization of photophysical and electrochemical properties, the structure- property relationships of the oligomers were investigated. Cyclic voltammogram studies showed that changing the number of thiophene and oxadiazole units could effectively modulate the electronic properties of the p-n diblock and triblock oligomers. The effect of molecular regiochemistry on electronic properties is also investigated. The observed electronic properties were consistent with theoretical calculations. These systems serve as excellent examples, demonstrating the band gap control principle in the p-n heterostructure oligomers.

Abstract:Two swivel-cruciform D-A conjugated monomers (BTBBT and BTDQL) combining 5,5'-bibenzo[c][<a class="workspace-trigger" href="#bib1">1</a>,<a class="workspace-trigger" href="#bib2">2</a>,<a class="workspace-trigger" href="#bib5">5</a>]thiadiazole (BBT) and 2,2',3,3'-tetramethyl-6,6'-biquinoxaline (DQL) as the A units and 2,2'-bithiophene (BT) as the D unit are synthesized. The corresponding polymer films (pBTBBT and pBTDQL) are smoothly obtained on ITO-glass via electrochemical polymerization. Owing to the structural similarity, BTBBT and BTDQL enable to be electropolymerized under the same conditions, resulting in the similar thickness and surface morphology of their corresponding polymer films. Interestingly, pBTDQL displays the coloration time of 0.9s at λmax and 0.5s at 900nm, which is much shorter than that of pBTBBT with the coloration time of 6.3s at λmax and 3.0s at 900nm under the same conditions. The obviously rapider electrochromic switching rate of pBTDQL is attributed to its lower oxidation potentials and higher redox charge as evidenced by cyclic voltammetry results, which indicate an easier and more charge injection during electrochemical process. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results further demonstrate that pBTDQL exhibits the lower charge-transfer resistance and ion-diffusion resistance. These data indicate that charge transport property of conjugated polymer plays a key role on the electrochromic switching rate of pBTBBT and pBTDQL, and additionally DQL could serve as an electron-accepting building block for the constructions of faster switching conjugated polymer-based electrochromic materials.

Abstract:To study influence of the donor(D)-acceptor(A) units and pendent mode of phosphorescent moiety on the opto-electronic properties for its resulting copolymers, two D-A-based polyfluorene derivatives (P1 and P2) pending the red-emitting iridium bi(phenylisoquilonato) (picolinato) [Ir(Piq)2(pic)] unit and a polyfluorene derivative (P3) only pending Ir(Piq)2(pic) unit were synthesized and characterized, in which the donor of carbazole, the acceptor of oxadiazole are grafted into the C-9 position of fluorene, the Ir(Piq)2(pic) unit is pended into either the C-9 position for P1 and P3 or the end for P2 of fluorene by unconjugated linkage, respectively. Their opto-electronic properties were significantly influenced by the D-A units and pendent mode of the Ir(Piq)2(pic) unit. In the polymer light-emitting devices with a configuration of ITO/PEDOT/polymers/LiF/Al, the P1 showed best electroluminescent properties than the P2 and P3. The maximum current efficiency of 0.72 cd/A and the highest luminance of 1398 cd/m2 were obtained in the P1-based device, which are 1.3 and 1.5 times higher than those in the P2-based device, respectively. Abstract:In this paper we present the synthesis and characterization of a new light-emitting copolymer constituted of regularly alternating segments of 3,3'-didecyl-2,2'-bithiophene and 2,6-bis(1,3,4-oxadiazolyl)toluene, which are p-dopable and n-dopable, respectively. The new polymer emits intense green light under the irradiation of UV light in its film states and shows strong solvatochromism both on absorption and on emission. The n-doping potential of the polymer is measured to be similar with that of 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) and other reported oxadiazole-containing polymers, the currently excellent electron-transporting materials, while its p-doping potential is much lower than those of other oxadiazole-containing light-emitting polymers and is comparable with that of poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) and polythiophenes (PT), the typical p-dope type materials. The presented synthesis reveals a possible approach to balance the rates of injection of electrons and holes from opposite contacts into an emissive layer in polymer light-emitting diodes by controlling the intrinsic properties of light-emitting materials.

Abstract:We have prepared a new class of copolymers containing carbazole, 1,8-naphthalimide and 1,3,4-oxadiazole. Optical properties of the copolymers are studied in the UV-visible region. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry examined their thermal stability. The copolymers are soluble in common organic solvents, and emit blue-green light under the irradiation of UV light in their film states. For these copolymers, there is an intramolecular energy transfer from carbazole and 1,3,4-oxadiazole to 1,8-naphthalimide. Single-layer devices of indium tin oxide/copolymers/aluminum utilizing these copolymers as emissive materials were fabricated, that emitted blue-green light at 6–8 V under a forward bias.
