Abstract:The development of the oxidative cross-coupling of unreactive C(sp3)-H bonds with (hetero)arene C(sp2)-H bonds is considerably appealing, yet conceptually and practically challenging. Here, we disclose the rhodium-catalyzed oxidative heteroarylation of unactivated C(sp3)-H bonds with heteroarene C(sp2)-H bonds. This method provides a step-economic route to β-heteroarylated 2-ethylpyridine derivatives, which exhibits relatively broad substrate scope, high tolerance level of sensitive functional groups, and high selectivity. The protocol can also be extended to the coupling reaction between 8-methylquinoline derivatives and heteroarenes.

Abstract:Rhodium(III)-catalyzed enantioselective oxidative C–H/C–H cross-coupling reaction between two arenes is disclosed. With the combination of a chiral CpRh(III) complex and a chiral carboxylic acid additive, the direct coupling reactions between 1-aryl isoquinoline derivatives and electron-rich heteroarenes such as thiophenes, furans, benzothiophenes, and benzofurans are realized via a double C–H functionalization process. A series of axially chiral compounds are obtained in excellent yields and enantioselectivities (up to 99% yield and 99% ee). Abstract:N-Nitroso compounds are a versatile class of organic structures that allow expedient access to a diversity of synthetically useful architectures through demonstrated reactivities. We report herein the development of a Rh(III)-catalyzed N-nitroso-directed methodology for the ortho-olefination of arenes. The heightened reactivity endowed by the N-nitroso group translates to mild reaction conditions, high reaction yields, and synthetic compatibility of otherwise elusive substrates (e.g., an unactivated olefin, 1-octene). Comprehensive mechanistic studies on the electronic effect, deuterium exchange, kinetic isotope effect, kinetic profile, and numerous Rh(III) complexes have established [RhCp*](2+) as the catalyst resting state, electrophilic C-H activation as the turnover-limiting step, and a five-membered rhodacycle as a catalytically competent intermediate. The ability to elaborate the N-nitroso moiety to an amine functionality provides a seminal example of the innumerable synthetic possibilities offered by this transformable directing group.

Abstract:The developed methodology describes an efficient Rh(III)-catalyzed oxidative C-H/C-H cross-coupling between acyclic enamides and heteroarenes. This cross dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reaction offers advantages, including excellent regioselectivity and stereoselectivity, good functional group compatibility, and a broad substrate scope. Mechanistically, Rh(III)-catalyzed β-C(sp2)-H activation of acyclic enamides is proposed to be the critical step.

Abstract:The development of transition metal-catalyzed oxidative C-H/C-H cross-coupling between two (hetero)arenes to forge aryl-heteroaryl motifs under mild conditions is an appealing yet challenging task. Herein, we disclose a rhodium-catalyzed oxidative C-H/C-H cross-coupling reaction of an N-nitrosoaniline with a heteroarene under mild conditions. The judicious choice of the N-nitroso group as a directing group enables heightened reactivity. The coupled products could be transformed expediently to (2-aminophenyl)heteroaryl skeletons.

Abstract:Rhodium(III)-catalyzed C-H couplings of arenes with alkenes are among the most powerful methods for C-C bond formation. For these transformations, subtle manipulation of ancillary ligands can lead to dramatic changes in reactivity and selectivity. However, detailed mechanistic studies concerning the ligand effects are rare. In this study, we investigated the origin of ligand-controlled product-selectivity in rhodium(III)-catalyzed C-H couplings of arenes with alkenes, using a series of well-defined [Cp X Rh III ] complexes that feature electronically or sterically distinct Cp X (Cp (η 5 -C 5 H 5 ), Cp CF3 (η 5 -C 5 Me 4 CF 3 ) and Cp* (η 5 -C 5 Me 5 )) ligands. A combination of experimental and theoretical investigations showed that (i) rhodium hydride species containing the electron rich Cp* ligand can undergo reinsertion of the alkene, thereby allowing rhodium-walking, (ii) rhodium hydride species involving the electron-deficient Cp or Cp CF3 ligands prefer reductive elimination rather than alkene insertion. These findings offer valuable insights on future rational catalyst design for selective arene-alkene cross coupling reactions.

Abstract:A cobalt(II)-catalyzed regioselective aryl C-H bond oxygenation between arenes and aryl or aliphatic carboxylic acids under bidendate-chelation assistance is developed. Abstract:Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation assisted by an oxidizing directing group has evolved to a mild and redox-economic strategy for the construction of heterocycles. Despite the success, these coupling systems are currently limited to cleavage of an oxidizing N-O or N-N bond. Cleavage of an oxidizing C-N bond, which allows for complementary carbocycle synthesis, is unprecedented. In this article, α-ammonium acetophenones with an oxidizing C-N bond have been designed as substrates for Rh(III)-catalyzed C-H activation under redox-neutral conditions. The coupling with α-diazo esters afforded benzocyclopentanones, and the coupling with unactivated alkenes such as styrenes and aliphatic olefins gave ortho-olefinated acetophenoes. In both systems the reactions proceeded with a broad scope, high efficiency, and functional group tolerance. Moreover, efficient one-pot coupling of diazo esters has been realized starting from α-bromoacetophenones and triethylamine. The reaction mechanism for the coupling with diazo esters has been studied by a combination of experimental and theoretical methods. In particular, three distinct mechanistic pathways have been scrutinized by DFT studies, which revealed that the C-H activation occurs via a C-bound enolate-assisted concerted metalation-deprotonation mechanism and is rate-limiting. In subsequent C-C formation steps, the lowest energy pathway involves two rhodium carbene species as key intermediates.

Abstract:A rhodium(III)-catalyzed direct ortho CH bond olefination of arenes, including but not limited to benzamides, arylpyridines and indoles, with a variety of unactivated aliphatic olefins has been developed. In the presence of catalytic amounts of dichloro(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)rhodium(III) dimer {[Cp*RhCl2](2)}, copper(II) acetate monohydrate [Cu(OAc)(2)H2O] and silver hexafluoroantimonate(V) (AgSbF6), the coupling reaction occurred efficiently to afford the ortho-olefinated linear products in good to excellent yields with high regio- and stereoselectivities, and a range of functional groups in both coupling partners is compatible with the reaction conditions. This protocol relies on the use of directing groups, and the addition of AgSbF6 as additive is crucial for the catalysis. This new method expands the scope of rhodium(III)-catalyzed direct CH bond olefination of arenes, and provides a rapid access to useful linear arylation products of unactivated olefins.

Abstract:A rhodium(I)-catalyzed direct C-H bond olefination of pyridyl-substituted arenes with readily available vinyl carboxylic acids has been realized. This reaction occurred efficiently without the need for any external oxidant, affording the ortho-olefinated products in high yields and excellent regioselectivities. Diversely substituted vinyl carboxylic acids behaved as efficient olefination reagents under the reaction conditions, and a range of functional groups in both coupling partners was well tolerated. Mechanistic studies indicated that a decarbonylation step is involved in this catalytic process, and pivalic anhydride [(t-BuCO)(2)O] acts as the activator of the carboxylic acids for the in situ generation of highly active anhydrides.

Abstract:An urgent yet challenging task is to overcome the limitations in substrate scope and regio- and chemoselectivity in the oxidative couplings between two arenes for the construction of unsymmetrical 2,2'-difunctional biaryls with diverse application requirements. In this work, a co-oxidant-free Rh(I)/Zn(NTf2)(2)/air catalytic system has been developed for dual chelation-assisted oxidative C-H/C-H cross-couplings between two anilines, between two phenols, and between phenols and anilines, which enables rapid assembly of rich libraries of 2,2'-bianilines, 2,2'-biphenols, and 2'-aminobiphenyl-2-ols. This protocol features air as the sole oxidant, complete regioselectivity, high chemoselectivity, low molar ratio of substrates (even 1:1), convenient operation, and scale-up synthesis. The established catalytic system is tolerant of the substrates having both electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents at different positions of the aryl ring. This work further discloses that the chemoselectivity of cross-coupling over homocoupling mainly relies on a suitable combination of two directing groups (i.e., a pair of strongly and weakly coordinating directing groups) rather than the electronically distinct properties between two substrates, which provides an inspiration for designing the matching directing group pair for the dual chelation-assisted oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H cross-couplings. Thus, this strategy allows the highly chemoselective cross-coupling between electronically similar coupling partners, which represents a challenging task in the oxidative Ar-H/Ar-H cross-coupling reactions.
