Abstract:An efficient direct C(sp3)-H oxidation of diarylmethanes has been demonstrated by this study. This method employs environment-friendly O-2 as an oxidant and is promoted by commercially available MN(SiMe3)(2) [M = K, Na or Li], which provides a facile method for the synthesis of various diaryl ketones in excellent yields. This protocol is metal-free, mild and compatible with a number of functional groups on substrates.

Abstract:Metal-free aerobic oxidation of aryl sulfides to sulfoxides and sulfones has been developed in the presence of aliphatic aldehydes with excellent selectivity and yields. The reaction proceeded under mild conditions with the catalysis of N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI). Control experiments indicated that the reaction underwent a free radical pathway with the acylperoxyl radicals generated from aldehydes in situ as the key intermediates. The aromatic aldehydes were less efficient in the sulfide oxidation, which might be explained by the fact that the aromatic ring dispersed the electrons of free radicals and thus weakened the attacking ability of peroxy free radicals.

Abstract:β-Alkoxy sulfides are widely used as versatile building blocks in organic synthesis. Therefore, it is highly desirable to develop a convenient and efficient method for oxysulfenylation of alkenes. In this communication, an easy and efficient metal-free approach to β-alkoxy sulfides has been developed. The protocol uses readily available 1-(arylthio)pyrrolidine-2,5-diones and alcohols as the oxysulfenylating agents, chloroform as the solvent, and no ligand, additive and exclusion of air were required. Therefore, the present method provides a useful strategy for synthesis of β-alkoxy sulfides.

Abstract:Metal-free methylation of a pyridine N-oxide C-H bond was developed using peroxide as a methyl reagent under neat conditions. Pyridine N-oxide derivatives with various groups (e.g., Cl, NO2, and OCH3) were all suitable substrates, and the desired products were obtained in moderate to excellent yields under standard conditions. Moreover, the methylation can be performed with a good yield on the gram-scale experiment. Tentative mechanistic studies show that the methylation is a classical radical process.

Abstract:The merging of transition-metal catalysis with radical chemistry offers a versatile platform for three-component difunctionalization of alkenes, allowing the construction of molecular complexity from readily available feedstocks. However, the direct use of hydrocarbon feedstocks as sp 3 -hybridized carbon radical precursors to participate in catalytic enantioselective functionalization of alkenes remains elusive. Here we describe an asymmetric 1,2-oxidative alkylation of conjugated dienes based on direct functionalization of strong and neutral C( sp 3 )–H bonds enabled by the combination of hydrogen atom transfer and copper catalysis. This approach allows carbon-centred radicals to be generated by selective activation of aliphatic C–H bonds, which are ubiquitous in hydrocarbons and other radical precursors. These radicals then react with 1,3-dienes to give allylic radicals which participate in copper-mediated asymmetric C–O coupling. This protocol provides a single-step access to various synthetically useful allylic esters directly from widely available chemical feedstocks.

Abstract:A metal/organo cooperative catalysis to enable the enantioselective functionalization of inactive C-H bonds γ to the formyl group in aliphatic aldehydes has been established. Instead of using enals as substrates in traditional organocatalytic cyclization reactions, the aliphatic aldehydes directly participated in [4 + 2] cyclization with quinone derivatives exploiting molecular oxygen as oxidants to afford optically active cyclic molecules with excellent levels of enantioselectivity. This method features a combination of pot, step, and atom economy.

Abstract:Although tremendous progress in the field of C(sp3)–H oxidation has been achieved over the last decades, the selective oxidation of non-activated positions on hydrocarbon skeletons is still highly challenging. It usually requires the presence of a suitable functional group in proximity to the desired oxidation site. Here we present a novel approach for catalyst-directed C–H oxidation that relies on substrate binding via the solvophobic effect in fluorinated alcohols, and thus is independent of functional groups on the substrate. Enabled by the novel supramolecular catalyst Mn(mcp)-RS2, the preferential oxidation at the fifth position on aliphatic substrates was observed.

Abstract:A novel palladium catalyzed hydroxylation of unactivated aliphatic C(sp(3))-H bonds was successfully developed. Different from conventional methods, water serves as the hydroxyl group source in the reaction. This new reaction demonstrates good reactivity and broad functional group tolerance. The C-H hydroxylated products can be readily transformed into various highly valuable chemicals via known transformations. Based on experimental and theoretical studies, a mechanism involving the Pd(II)/(IV) pathway is proposed for this hydroxylation reaction.

Abstract:Metal-free, photoredox-catalyzed aromatization-driven deconstructive functionalization of spiro-dihydroquinazolinones with α-CF3 alkenes is presented. The readily available spiro-dihydroquinazolinones reacted efficiently with α-CF3 alkenes during photocatalysis to give the gem-difluoroallylated and the CF3-containing quinazolin-4(3H)-ones in good yields with excellent chemoselectivity. The selectivity depends on the electron effect of substituents in α-CF3 alkenes. A wide range of four-, five-, six-, seven-, eight- and twelve-membered spiro-dihydroquinazolinones were compatible with this transformation. The protocol is also characterized by the mild and redox-neutral reaction conditions, good functional group compatibility and excellent atom economy. Mechanistic studies revealed that the reaction proceeds via a radical pathway.

Abstract:Radical involved transformations are now considered as extremely important processes in modern organic synthetic chemistry. According to the demand by atom-economic and sustainable chemistry, direct C(sp 3 )–H functionalization through radical oxidative coupling represents an appealing strategy for C–C bond formations. However, the selectivity control of reactive radical intermediates is still a great challenge in these transformations. Here we show a selective radical oxidative C(sp 3 )–H/C(sp)–H cross-coupling of unactivated alkanes with terminal alkynes by using a combined Cu/Ni/Ag catalytic system. It provides a new way to access substituted alkynes from readily available materials. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that this reaction proceeds through a radical process and the C(sp 3 )–H bond cleavage is the rate-limiting step. This study may have significant implications for controlling selective C–C bond formation of reactive radical intermediates by using multimetallic catalytic systems.

Abstract:Metal-catalyzed highly Markovnikov-type selective hydrofunctionalization of terminal alkynes provides a straightforward and atom-economical route to access 1,1-disubstituted alkenes, which have a wide range of applications in organic synthesis. However, the highly Markovnikov-type selective transformations are challenging due to the electronic and steric effects during the addition process. With the development of metal-catalyzed organic synthesis, different metal catalysts have been developed to solve this challenge, especially for platinum group metal catalysts. In this perspective, we review homogeneous metal-catalyzed Markovnikov-type selective hydrofunctionalization of terminal alkynes according to the classified element types as well as reaction mechanisms. Future avenues for investigation are also presented to help expand this exciting field.

Abstract:Metalloporphyrins are a class of versatile catalysts with the capability to functionalize saturated C-H bonds via several well-defined atom/group transfer processes, including oxene, nitrene, and carbene C-H insertions. The corresponding hydroxylation, amination, and alkylation reactions provide direct approaches for the catalytic conversion of abundant hydrocarbons into value-added functional molecules through C-O, C-N, and C-C bond formations, respectively. This tutorial review describes metalloporphyrin-based catalytic systems for the functionalization of different types of sp(3) C-H bonds, both inter-and intramolecularly, including challenging primary C-H bonds. Additional features of metalloporphyrin-catalyzed C-H functionalization include unusual selectivities and high turnover numbers.
