Abstract:We report a microfluidic (MF) approach to studies of temperature mediated carbon dioxide (CO(2)) transfer between the gas and the liquid phases. Micrometre-diameter CO(2) bubbles with a narrow size distribution were generated in an aqueous or organic liquid and subsequently were subjected to temperature changes in the downstream channel. In response to the cooling-heating-cooling cycle the bubbles underwent corresponding contraction-expansion-contraction transitions, which we term 'bubble breathing'. We examined temperature-controlled dissolution of CO(2) in four exemplary liquid systems: deionized water, a 0.7 M aqueous solution of NaCl, ocean water extracted from Bermuda coastal waters, and dimethyl ether of poly(ethylene glycol), a solvent used in industry for absorption of CO(2). The MF approach can be extended to studies of other gases with a distinct, temperature-dependent solubility in liquids.

Abstract:We report a new microfluidic strategy for the generation of small (<10 µm) microbubbles with a narrow size distribution. Our approach has the following features: (i) the generation of bubbles from gaseous CO2 and (ii) the controllable dissolution of these bubbles until they reach a desired size. We examine the role of various factors on the formation and the extent of bubble dissolution and show that the final dimensions of bubbles are determined by the flow rate of the continuous aqueous phase and the acid–base equilibria established within the microchannels.

Abstract:The dissolution process of CO2 bubbles adhered to a flat plate in a rectangular channel at different flow velocities is studied experimentally and theoretically. In the experiments, the CO2 bubble is manually introduced by means of a needle connected to a micro-syringe in the rectangular channel filled with ultra-pure degassed water. The rectangular channel comprises a transparent 3D printed cavity and a replaceable plate. The water flow velocity in the rectangular channel can be precisely controlled using a liquid flow controller. The CO2 bubble is adhered to the flat plate, which is replaceable and has different wetting properties. The dissolution process of the bubble is visualized using a high-speed camera at different flow velocities. The changing bubble radius over time is calculated using an image processing program. A mathematical dissolution model is developed to estimate the dissolution durations of the CO2 bubble adhered to the flat plate, which includes the effect of contact angle and water flow velocity by using Sherwood number. With appropriate constants, the dissolution model exhibits good agreement with the experimental results. It is found that both the contact angle and water flow velocity play important roles in the bubble dissolution rate. An increase in water flow velocity can help improve the bubble dissolution rate. With a decrease in contact angle, the bubble dissolution rate becomes faster. The dissolution model is used to predict the maximum allowable bubble size at different scanning speeds in immersion lithography.

Abstract:This work introduces a microfluidic method for the generation of monodispersed microdroplets by using temperature controlled bubble condensation processes. In this method, the dispersed phase is first vaporized in the feeding pipe and ruptured to monodispersed bubbles in a coflowing stream. These bubbles are then condensed in the downstream pipe, where monodispersed microdroplets are obtained. This method ensures the narrow distribution of droplet diameters and prepares microdroplets less than 200 mm in sub-millimeter fluidic devices.

Abstract:Classical bubbles are ubiquitous in nature, throughout industrial production and daily life. So far, tremendous researches on bubbles are mostly focused on aqueous or lipid systems. In this study, a new conceptual bubble system based on liquid metals, whose surface tension is nearly eight times larger than that of water, is proposed and demonstrated. Such liquid metal bubbles display a series of completely different features over the existing bubbles generated via common liquids, especially those composed of conventional aqueous solutions. Through delivering fluids inside the interior of liquid metal system, we successfully achieved the regulation of liquid metal surface with diverse morphologies, including forming single bubble, hole and multi-bubble clusters etc. For more precise manipulations, the solution environment where liquid metal is immersed into can be divided into "film-forming" and "remover" species, enabling the control of generation and vanishing of oxide on the metal surface in particular area through different combinations, resulting in the complicated administration and control of liquid metal matters. Further, the electrical characteristics of these morphologies were justified and disclosed to be capable of building logic circuits. Along this way, a display device was developed to exhibit various patterns, showing or even storing information inside. Overall, the liquid metal bubble as well as its periodic excitation opens applications in diverse areas, including but not limited to soft robotics, logic system, or underwater circuits.

Abstract:In this work, the dynamics of bubble formation in a highly viscous liquid in a co-flowing microfluidic device is experimentally investigated. The evolution of gaseous thread in the co-flowing device is recorded using a high-speed camera. The bubble formation process can be divided into three stages: retraction stage, expansion stage, and collapse stage. According to an analysis of the forces acting on the gaseous thread, the bubble formation in the co-flowing device is a competitive result of the surface tension, pressure difference and shearing effects. The surface tension effect plays an important role in the retraction stage. In the expansion stage, the pressure difference effect dominates the bubble's growth. While in the collapse stage, the shearing effect leads to the interface breakup. Three empirical correlations are proposed according to the experimental data and can be used to predict bubble formation frequency, the diameter and length of the generated bubbles.

Abstract:We have designed and constructed an experimental system to study gas bubble growth in slightly supersaturated liquids. This is achieved by working with carbon dioxide dissolved in water, pressurized at a maximum of 1 MPa and applying a small pressure drop from saturation conditions. Bubbles grow from hydrophobic cavities etched on silicon wafers, which allows us to control their number and position. Hence, the experiment can be used to investigate the interaction among bubbles growing in close proximity when the main mass transfer mechanism is diffusion and there is a limited availability of the dissolved species. Self-assembly and complex manipulation of colloidal mesoscopic particles by active thermocapillary stress

Abstract:We demonstrate that the active thermocapillary stresses induced by multiple microbubbles offer simple routes to directed self-assembly and complex but controllable micromanipulation of mesoscopic colloidal particles embedded in a liquid. The microbubbles are nucleated on a liquid-glass interface using optical tweezers. The flow around a single bubble causes self-assembly of the particles in rings at the bubble-base, while an asymmetric temperature profile generated across the bubble interface breaks the azimuthal symmetry of the flow, and induces simultaneous accumulation and repulsion of particles at different axial planes with respect to the bubble. The flows due to two adjacent bubbles lead to more diverse effects including the sorting of particles, and to local vorticity that causes radial and axial rotation of the particles - the latter being obtained for the first time using optical tweezers. The sorting is enabled by nucleating the bubbles on spatially discrete temperature profiles, while the vorticity is generated by nucleating them in the presence of a temperature gradient which once again causes a strong symmetry-breaking in the azimuthal flow. The flow profiles obtained in the experiments are explained by analytical solutions or qualitative explanations of the associated thermocapillary problem employing the Stokes and heat equations.

Abstract:An approach based upon sonication microfluidics is presented to fabricate nanoparticle-coated microbubbles. The gas-in-liquid slug flow formed in a microchannel is subjected to ultrasound, leading to cavitation at the gas liquid interface. Therefore, microbubbles are formed and then stabilized by the nanoparticles contained in the liquid. Compared to the conventional sonication method, this sonication microfluidics continuous flow approach has unlimited gas nuclei for cavitation that yields continuous production of foam with shorter residence time. By controlling the flow rate ratios of the gas to the liquid, this method also achieves a higher production volume, smaller bubble size, and less waste of the nanoparticles needed to stabilize the microbubbles.

Abstract:This paper introduces an experimental study on the microbubble generation mechanism in a co-flowing microfluidic device. Using propane, butane and air as the dispersed phases and different SDS–PEG solutions as the continuous phases, two kinds of bubble generating phenomena, named “single-bubble generation” flow and “dual-bubble generation” flow, were observed in experiment and uniform bubbles with average diameters ranging from 391μm to 713μm and polydispersity less than 2.9% were successfully prepared. The pressure fluctuation of gas phase is carefully analyzed with the Young–Laplace equation and the bubble generation mechanism is summarized from the dynamic movement of gas–liquid interface. The main factors impacting the bubble size variation are illustrated for both the organic and inorganic gases. A universal correlation is established to predict the average bubble diameters.

Abstract:Recently, we demonstrated that the local heating of degassed water can generate water vapor microbubbles and induce a rapid flow around the bubble. Although flow generation involves the self-excited oscillation of bubbles at a local heating point, the conditions under which the bubbles oscillate are not fully understood. In this study, the dependence of microbubble size and oscillation frequency on the concentration of non-condensable gases in water was investigated. A continuous-wave laser beam was focused on a β-FeSi2 thin film, and water was locally heated using the photothermal conversion properties of the film. The results showed that the lower the concentration of non-condensable gases dissolved in water, the smaller the bubble size and the higher the oscillation frequency. Furthermore, it was found that the bubbles oscillate when the amount of non-condensable gas absorbed by the bubbles, i.e., the bubble size, falls below a specific level. This study can provide a new understanding of the bubble oscillation mechanism and lead to the development of fluid control technology using bubbles.

Abstract:Microfluidic devices are often utilized to generate uniform-size microbubbles. In most microfluidic bubble generation experiments, once the bubbles are formed the gas inside the bubbles begin to dissolve into the surrounding aqueous environment. The bubbles shrink until they attain an equilibrium size dictated by the concentration and type of amphiphilic molecules stabilizing the gas-liquid interface. Here, we exploit this shrinkage mechanism, and control the solution lipid concentration and microfluidic geometry, to make monodisperse bulk nanobubbles. Interestingly, we make the surprising observation of a critical microbubble diameter above and below which the scale of bubble shrinkage dramatically changes. Namely, microbubbles generated with an initial diameter larger than the critical diameter shrinks to a stable diameter that is consistent with previous literature. However, microbubbles that are initially smaller than the critical diameter experience a sudden contraction into nanobubbles whose size is at least an order-of-magnitude below expectations. We apply electron microscopy and resonance mass measurement methods to quantify the size and uniformity of the nanobubbles, and probe the dependence of the critical bubble diameter on the lipid concentration. We anticipate that further analysis of this unexpected microbubble sudden contraction regime can lead to more robust technologies for making monodisperse nanobubbles.

Abstract:This letter describes the gas-liquid phase flow patterns and the mechanism of generation of monodisperse microbubbles in a T-junction microfluidic device using the crossflowing shear-rupturing technique. The bubble size is ranged from 100 to 500 mu m. The air phase states as isolate air slugs, "pearl necklaces," periodic isolate bubbles, zig-zag bubble patterns, and multiple-bubble layer can be observed in the wider measured channel. The bubble size relates with the continuous phase flow velocity and viscosity as V-b proportional to 1/(mu(c)u(c)), while being almost independent of surface tension gamma and air phase flow rate Q(g), for the conditions used in this work. The bubble formation mechanism by using the crossflowing shear-rupturing technique is different from the hydrodynamic flow focusing and both geometry-dominated breakup techniques. Our system provides independent control of both the size and volume fraction of dispersed bubbles. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:The nucleation and growth of CO2 bubbles in non-Newtonian and Newtonian fluids that were initially supersaturated under different pressures are investigated in the present work. Quantitative information by means of two cameras reveals that at an immobile nucleation site the bubble grows rapidly followed by a linear increase in bubble diameter with time. After reaching a critical size, the bubble detaches from the stagnant site to rise in liquids with an exponential temporary increase for both the diameter and distance. A simple physical reasoning was proposed to qualitatively explain these observed phenomena. Recently, the growth rate and flow fields around a CO2 micro-bubble were measured in a microdevice by a micro-Particle Image Velocimetry in water. This information at microscale gives new insight into the complex mechanism of bubble nucleation and growth in fluids and could help to develop a rigorous theoretical modelling and numerical simulation such as the Lattice Boltzmann approach.

Abstract:Rolled-up catalytic Ti/Cr/Pt microtubes, consisting of inorganic nanomembranes integrated on-chip, are used to generate oxygen microbubbles in solutions of hydrogen peroxide. Oxygen bubble parameters (frequency, radius and volumetric flow rate) are optimized at different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and common dish soap. Increasing the aspect ratio of the microtube (e.g., tube length/diameter) leads to the formation of smaller bubbles, but at higher frequencies. Longer tubes produce less total oxygen volume in comparison to shorter tubes. We attribute this observation to the specific dynamic behaviours of bubbles in tubes.
Electrically Modulated Thin Film Dynamics Controlling Bubble Manipulation in Microfluidic Confinement

Abstract:Thin film dynamics and associated instability mechanisms have triggered a wide range of scientific innovations, as attributed to their abilities of creating fascinating patterns over small scales. Here, we demonstrate a new thin film instability phenomenon governed by electro-mechanics and hydrodynamics over interfacial scales in a narrow fluidic confinement. We first bring out the essential physics of this instability mechanism, in consideration with the fact that under the action of axial electrical field in a confined microfluidic environment, perturbations may be induced on the interfaces of thin corner films formed adjacent to the walls of a microchannel, leading to the inception of ordered lateral structures. A critical electric field exists beyond which these structures from the walls of the confinement intermingle to evolve into localized gas pockets in the form of bubbles. These bubbles do not remain static with further changes in electric field, but undergo a sequence of elongation-deformation-breakup episode in a dynamically evolving manner. By elucidating the complex interplay of electro-hydrodynmic forces and surface tension, we offer further insights into a new paradigm of interfacial instability mediated controlled microbubble manipulation for on-chip applications, bearing far-ranging scientific and technological consequences in executing designed fluidic operations in confined miniaturized environment.

Abstract:We studied the dissolution dynamics of CO2 gas bubbles in a microfluidic channel, both experimentally and theoretically. In the experiments, spherical CO2 bubbles in a flow of a solution of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) first shrink rapidly before attaining an equilibrium size. In the rapid dissolution regime, the time to obtain a new equilibrium is 30 ms regardless of SDS concentration, and the equilibrium radius achieved varies with the SDS concentration. To explain the lack of complete dissolution, we interpret the results by considering the effects of other gases (O2, N2) that are already dissolved in the aqueous phase, and we develop a multicomponent dissolution model that includes the effect of surface tension and the liquid pressure drop along the channel. Solutions of the model for a stationary gas bubble show good agreement with the experimental results, which lead to our conclusion that the equilibrium regime is obtained by gas exchange between the bubbles and liquid phase. Also, our observations from experiments and model calculations suggest that SDS molecules on the gas-liquid interface form a diffusion barrier, which controls the dissolution behaviour and the eventual equilibrium radius of the bubble.
Bubble Nucleation and Growth on Microstructure Surface under Microgravity

Abstract:Understanding the nucleation and growth dynamics of the surface bubbles generated on a heated surface can benefit a wide range of modern technologies, such as the cooling systems of electronics, refrigeration cycles, nuclear reactors and metal industries, etc. Usually, these studies are conducted in the terrestrial environment. As space exploration and economy expanding at an unprecedented pace, the aforementioned applications that potentially deployable in space call for the understanding of thermal bubble phenomena in a microgravity setting. In this work, we investigate the nucleation and growth of surface bubble in space, where the gravity effect is negligible compared to the earth. We observe much faster bubble nucleation, and the growth rate can be ~30 times higher than that on the earth. Our finite element thermofluidic simulations show that the thermal convective flow due to gravity around the nucleation site is the key factor that effectively dissipates the heat from heating substrate to the bulk liquid and slows down the bubble nucleation and growth processes. Due to the microgravity field in space, the thermal convective flow is negligible compared to the terrestrial environment, leading to the localization of heat around the nucleation site, and thus enables faster bubble nucleation and growth in space. We also find that bubble nucleation can be influenced by the characteristic length of the microstructures on the heating surface. The microstructures behave as fins to enhance the cooling of the surface. With finer microstructures enabling more efficient surface to liquid heat transfer, the bubble nucleation takes longer.
