Abstract:The dissolution process of CO2 bubbles adhered to a flat plate in a rectangular channel at different flow velocities is studied experimentally and theoretically. In the experiments, the CO2 bubble is manually introduced by means of a needle connected to a micro-syringe in the rectangular channel filled with ultra-pure degassed water. The rectangular channel comprises a transparent 3D printed cavity and a replaceable plate. The water flow velocity in the rectangular channel can be precisely controlled using a liquid flow controller. The CO2 bubble is adhered to the flat plate, which is replaceable and has different wetting properties. The dissolution process of the bubble is visualized using a high-speed camera at different flow velocities. The changing bubble radius over time is calculated using an image processing program. A mathematical dissolution model is developed to estimate the dissolution durations of the CO2 bubble adhered to the flat plate, which includes the effect of contact angle and water flow velocity by using Sherwood number. With appropriate constants, the dissolution model exhibits good agreement with the experimental results. It is found that both the contact angle and water flow velocity play important roles in the bubble dissolution rate. An increase in water flow velocity can help improve the bubble dissolution rate. With a decrease in contact angle, the bubble dissolution rate becomes faster. The dissolution model is used to predict the maximum allowable bubble size at different scanning speeds in immersion lithography.

Abstract:This work focuses on the dissolution of a train of unconfined bubbles in cylindrical microchannels. We investigate how the mass transfer is affected by the channel and bubble sizes, distance between bubbles, diffusivity, superficial velocity, deformation of the bubble, the presence of surfactants in the limit of rigid interface and off-centred positions of the bubbles. We analyse the influence of the dimensionless numbers and especially the distance between bubbles and the Péclet number, Pe, which we vary among eight decades and identify five different dissolution regimes. We show different concentration patterns and the dependence of the Sherwood numbers, Sh. These regimes can be classified by either the importance of the streamline diffusion or by the interaction between bubbles. For small Pe the streamline diffusion is not negligible as compared to convection whereas for large Pe, convection dominates in the streamline direction and, thus, crosswind diffusion becomes crucial in governing the dissolution through boundary layers or of the remaining wake behind the bubbles. Bubbles interaction takes place for very small Pe for which the dissolution is purely diffusive or for very large Pe numbers in which case long wakes eventually reach the following bubble. We also observe that the bubble deformability mainly affects the Sh in the regime for very large Pe in which bubbles interaction matters, and also that the rigid interface effect affects the boundary layer and the remaining wake. The effect of off-centred position of the bubble, determined by the transverse force balance, is also limited to large Pe. The boundary layers in rigid bubble surfaces are thicker as compared to those on stress-free bubble surface and, thus, the dissolution is smaller. For centred bubbles, the influence of inertia on the dissolution is negligible. Finally, we discuss underlying hypothesis of the model.

Abstract:In many environmental and industrial applications, the mass transfer of gases in liquid solvents is a fundamental process during the generation of bubbles for specific purposes or, vice versa, the removal of entrapped bubbles. We address the growth dynamics of a trapped slug bubble in a vertical glass cylinder under a water barrier. In the studied process, the ambient air atmosphere is replaced by a CO$_2$ atmosphere at the same or higher pressure. The asymmetric exchange of the gaseous solutes between the CO$_2$-rich water barrier and the air-rich bubble always results in net bubble growth. We refer to this process as solute exchange. The dominant transport of CO$_2$ across the water barrier is driven by a combination of diffusion and convective dissolution. The experimental results are compared to and explained with a simple numerical model, with which the underlying mass transport processes are quantified. Analytical solutions that accurately predict the bubble growth dynamics are subsequently derived. The effect of convective dissolution across the water layer is treated as a reduction of the effective diffusion length, in accordance with the mass transfer scaling observed in laminar or natural convection. Finally, the binary water-bubble system is extended to a ternary water-bubble-alkane system. It is found that the alkane (n-hexadecane) layer bestows a buffering (hindering) effect on bubble growth and dissolution. The resulting growth dynamics and underlying fluxes are characterised theoretically.

Diffusive and convective dissolution of carbon dioxide in a vertical cylindrical cell

Abstract:The dissolution and subsequent mass transfer of carbon dioxide gas into liquid barriers plays a vital role in many environmental and industrial applications. In this work, we study the downward dissolution and propagation dynamics of CO2 into a vertical water barrier confined to a narrow vertical glass cylinder, using both experiments and direct numerical simulations. Initially, the dissolution of CO2 results in the formation of a CO2-rich water layer, which is denser in comparison to pure water, at the top gas-liquid interface. Continued dissolution of CO2 into the water barrier results in the layer becoming gravitationally unstable, leading to the onset of buoyancy driven convection and, consequently, the shedding of a buoyant plume. By adding sodium fluorescein, a pH-sensitive fluorophore, we directly visualise the dissolution and propagation of the CO2 across the liquid barrier. Tracking the CO2 front propagation in time results in the discovery of two distinct transport regimes, a purely diffusive regime and an enhanced diffusive regime. Using direct numerical simulations, we are able to successfully explain the propagation dynamics of these two transport regimes in this laterally strongly confined geometry, namely by disentangling the contributions of diffusion and convection to the propagation of the CO2 front.

Abstract:We perform direct numerical simulations of a gas bubble dissolving in a surrounding liquid. The bubble volume is reduced due to dissolution of the gas, with the numerical implementation of an immersed boundary method, coupling the gas diffusion and the Navier–Stokes equations. The methods are validated against planar and spherical geometries' analytical moving boundary problems, including the classic Epstein–Plesset problem. Considering a bubble rising in a quiescent liquid, we show that the mass transfer coefficient can be described by the classic Levich formula , with and the time-varying bubble size and rise velocity, and the gas diffusivity in the liquid. Next, we investigate the dissolution and gas transfer of a bubble in homogeneous and isotropic turbulence flow, extending Farsoiya et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 920, 2021, A34). We show that with a bubble size initially within the turbulent inertial subrange, the mass transfer coefficient in turbulence is controlled by the smallest scales of the flow, the Kolmogorov and Batchelor microscales, and is independent of the bubble size. This leads to the non-dimensional transfer rate scaling as , where is the macroscale Reynolds number , with the velocity fluctuations, the integral length scale, the liquid viscosity, and the Schmidt number. This scaling can be expressed in terms of the turbulence dissipation rate as , in agreement with the model proposed by Lamont & Scott (AIChE J., vol. 16, issue 4, 1970, pp. 513–519) and corresponding to the high regime from Theofanous et al. (Intl J. Heat Mass Transfer, vol. 19, issue 6, 1976, pp. 613–624).

Abstract:In this work, the dynamics of bubble formation in a highly viscous liquid in a co-flowing microfluidic device is experimentally investigated. The evolution of gaseous thread in the co-flowing device is recorded using a high-speed camera. The bubble formation process can be divided into three stages: retraction stage, expansion stage, and collapse stage. According to an analysis of the forces acting on the gaseous thread, the bubble formation in the co-flowing device is a competitive result of the surface tension, pressure difference and shearing effects. The surface tension effect plays an important role in the retraction stage. In the expansion stage, the pressure difference effect dominates the bubble's growth. While in the collapse stage, the shearing effect leads to the interface breakup. Three empirical correlations are proposed according to the experimental data and can be used to predict bubble formation frequency, the diameter and length of the generated bubbles.

Abstract:We combine modeling and measurements to investigate the dynamics of convective carbon dioxide (CO<math>2</math>) dissolution in a pressure-volume-temperature cell, extending a recent study by Wen et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 854, 2018, pp. 56–87) at low-pressure under ideal-gas conditions to high-pressure and real-gas conditions. Pressure-dependent compressibility and solubility are included to model the evolution of CO<math>2</math> concentration in the gas phase and at the interface, respectively. Simple ordinary-differential-equation models are developed to capture the mean behavior of the convecting system at large Rayleigh number and are then verified by using both numerical simulations and laboratory experiments. The prefactor for the linear scaling of convective CO<math>2</math> dissolution is evaluated – for the first time – by using pressure-decay experiments in bead packs at reservoir conditions. The results show that our models could quantitatively predict the process of the convective CO<math>2</math> dissolution in pressure-decay experiments. Moreover, the results also reveal that for increasing gas pressure in closed systems, the negative feedback of the pressure drop – resulting from the dissolution of CO<math>2</math> in the liquid – is weakened due to the decrease of the solubility constant at real-gas conditions. Our analysis provides a new direction for determination and validation of the convective dissolution flux of CO<math>2</math> in porous media systems.

Abstract:When a water droplet is deposited within a sparsely miscible liquid medium such as certain oils, the droplet surprisingly vanishes, even in a confined geometry. Such a phenomenon has crucial consequences for multiphase flows in which confined nano- and/or picoliter droplets are considered. We report here experiments of microdroplet dissolution in microchannels that reveal an enhancement of the shrinkage of confined water microdroplets in oil due to the permeability of the walls - made of polydimethilsiloxane (PDMS) - and a delay when collective effects are present. The system is first modelled assuming that the dissolution of the droplets in its surrounding liquid follows the Epstein-Plesset solution of the diffusion equation. The dissolution of small isolated droplets can indeed be described by this solution of the diffusion equation, while the vanishing of droplets larger than a certain critical value and those closer to other droplets requires numerical simulations which take into account the boundary conditions of the confined system, the neighbouring droplets and interestingly, the evaporative water vapour flux through the PDMS. Our results thus reveal the important role of the water solubility in oil and most remarkably, of the water vapour transport through permeable walls.

Abstract:We perform direct numerical simulations of soluble bubbles dissolving in a Taylor–Couette (TC) flow reactor with a radius ratio of and Reynolds number in the range , which covers the main regimes of this flow configuration, up to fully turbulent Taylor vortex flow. The numerical method is based on a geometric volume-of-fluid framework for incompressible flows coupled with a phase-change solver that ensures mass conservation of the soluble species, whilst boundary conditions on solid walls are enforced through an embedded boundary approach. The numerical framework is validated extensively against single-phase TC flows and competing mass transfer in multicomponent mixtures for an idealised infinite cylinder and for a bubble rising in a quiescent liquid. Our results show that when bubbles in a TC flow are mainly driven by buoyancy, theoretical formulae derived for spherical interfaces on a vertical trajectory still provide the right fundamental relationship between the bubble Reynolds and Sherwood numbers, which reduces to for large Péclet values. For bubbles mainly transported by TC flows, the dissolution of bubbles depend on the TC Reynolds number and, for the turbulent configurations, we show that the smallest characteristic turbulent scales control mass transfer, in agreement with the small-eddy model of Lamont & Scott (AIChE J., vol. 16, 1970, pp. 513–519). Finally, the interaction between two aligned bubbles is investigated and we show that a significant increase in mass transfer can be obtained when the rotor of the apparatus is operated at larger speeds.

Abstract:A microbubble model is developed with the mesoscopic simulation tool, dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) and many-body dissipative particle dynamics (MDPD). Standard DPD particles are employed to represent bubble phase at low density, and MDPD particles are for the liquid phase. The microbubble can be stable in liquid, in contrast to the vacuum bubble model. Gas-liquid interface is well presented with density and pressure jumps. The density ratio of gas to liquid can be lower than 0.1 by increasing the cut-off radius of bubble particles. Oscillating behavior of the microbubble model is investigated and validated by comparing with the Rayleigh-Plesset equation. The current model shows correct dynamic response, and the fluctuating behavior is captured as well. The lower the density ratio of the microbubble model, the closer the oscillating frequency to that of continuum theory. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2018

Abstract:The dissolution and microfluidic mass transfer of carbon dioxide in water at high-pressure conditions are crucial for a myriad of technological applications, including microreactors, extractions, and carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration (CCUS) processes. In this experimental work, we use a high-pressure microfluidic method to elucidate the mass transfer process of CO2 in water at high pressure. An intriguing multiphase CO2 flow and dispersions are observed when operating at the pressure-temperature ($P$-$T$) condition close to the CO2 gas-liquid phase boundary ($P=6.5$ MPa and $T=23.5\pm 0.5~^{\circ}$C). We propose a series of strategies to unravel this complex multi-phase dynamics by calculating each phase's volume and mass change in a gas-liquid coexistent CO2 dispersion, estimating the possible CO2 concentration change in water, and comparing with the CO2 solubility data. Finally, we quantify the CO2 mass transfer by directly calculating the CO2 dissolution rate in water and estimating the volumetric mass transfer coefficient ($k_{L}a$). The results show that the mass transfer may be influenced by the specific area ($a$), CO2 concentration gradient in the water slug, and the traveling speed of a dispersion.

Abstract:The present study investigates experimentally the evolution of two-phase flow pattern and pressure drop in the converging and diverging, silicon-based microchannels with mean hydraulic diameter of 128μm and CO2 bubbles produced by chemical reactions of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3). Three different concentrations of 0.2, 0.5 and 0.8mol/L of each reactant at the inlet before mixing and 10 different flow rates from 1.60×10−9m3/s to 16.0×10−9m3/s are studied. Flow visualization is made possible by using a high-speed digital camera. It is found that the present design of the microchannel, with the inlet chamber, results in much more intensive chemical reactions in the diverging microchannel than that in the converging one. The void fractions at the entrance and exit regions and pressure drop through the channel are also measured. The results reveals that the presence of small void fraction, <0.1, at the inlet may promote CO2 generation in the microchannel, irrespective of the channel is converging or diverging, indicating the agitation effects of bubbly flow in the microchannel. The increase of inlet concentration of reactants does not increase the pressure drop in the converging microchannel significantly, while the inlet concentration presents significant but mild effects on the pressure drop in the diverging microchannel. The two-phase frictional multiplier may be positively correlated with the mean void fraction in the channel linearly, and the data agree well with predictions from the correlations in the literature.
Dynamics of convective carbon dioxide dissolution in a closed porous media system

Abstract:Motivated by geological carbon dioxide (CO$_2$) storage, many recent studies have investigated the fluid dynamics of solutal convection in porous media. Here we study the convective dissolution of CO$_2$ in a closed system, where the pressure in the gas declines as convection proceeds. This introduces a negative feedback that reduces the convective dissolution rate even before the brine becomes saturated. We analyse the case of an ideal gas with a solubility given by Henry's law, in the limits of very low and very high Rayleigh numbers. The equilibrium state in this system is determined by the dimensionless dissolution capacity, $\Pi$, which gives the fraction of the gas that can be dissolved into the underlying brine. Analytic approximations of the pure diffusion problem with $\Pi>0$, show that the diffusive base state is no longer self-similar and that diffusive mass transfer declines rapidly with time. Direct numerical simulations at high Rayleigh numbers show that no constant flux regime exists for $\Pi > 0$; nevertheless, the quantity $F/C_s^2$ remains constant, where $F$ is the dissolution flux and $C_s$ is the dissolved concentration at the top of the domain. Simple mathematical models are developed to predict the evolution of $C_s$ and $F$ for high-Rayleigh-number convection in a closed system. The negative feedback that limits convection in closed systems may explain the persistence of natural CO$_2$ accumulations over millennial timescales.

Abstract:Abstract We study experimentally the growth of an isolated gas bubble in a slightly supersaturated water–CO2 solution at 6 atm pressure. In contrast to what was found in previous experiments at higher supersaturation, the time evolution of the bubble radius differs noticeably from existing theoretical solutions. We trace the differences back to several combined effects of the concentration boundary layer around the bubble, which we disentangle in this work. In the early phase, the interaction with the surface on which the bubble grows slows down the process. In contrast, in the final phase, before bubble detachment, the growth rate is enhanced by the onset of density-driven convection. We also show that the bubble growth is affected by prior growth and detachment events, though they are up to 15 min apart.

Abstract:Microchannels have great potential in intensification of gas–liquid–liquid reactions involving reacting gases, such as hydrogenation. This work uses CO2–octane–water system to model the hydrodynamics and mass transfer of such systems in a microchannel with double T‐junctions. Segmented flows are generated with three inlet sequences and the size laws of dispersed phases are obtained. Three generation mechanisms of dispersed gas bubbles/water droplets are identified: squeezing by the oil phase, cutting by the droplet/bubble, cutting by the water–oil/gas–oil interface. Based on the gas dissolution rate, the mass transfer coefficients are calculated. It is found that water droplet can significantly enhance the transfer of CO2 into the oil phase initially. When bubble‐droplet cluster are formed downstream the microchannel, droplet will retard the mass transfer. Other characteristics such as phase hold‐up, bubble velocity and bubble dissolution rate are also discussed. Abstract:We report a microfluidic (MF) approach to studies of temperature mediated carbon dioxide (CO(2)) transfer between the gas and the liquid phases. Micrometre-diameter CO(2) bubbles with a narrow size distribution were generated in an aqueous or organic liquid and subsequently were subjected to temperature changes in the downstream channel. In response to the cooling-heating-cooling cycle the bubbles underwent corresponding contraction-expansion-contraction transitions, which we term 'bubble breathing'. We examined temperature-controlled dissolution of CO(2) in four exemplary liquid systems: deionized water, a 0.7 M aqueous solution of NaCl, ocean water extracted from Bermuda coastal waters, and dimethyl ether of poly(ethylene glycol), a solvent used in industry for absorption of CO(2). The MF approach can be extended to studies of other gases with a distinct, temperature-dependent solubility in liquids.
Experimental investigation of solubility trapping in 3D printed micromodels

Abstract:Understanding interfacial mass transfer during dissolution of gas in a liquid is vital for optimising large-scale carbon capture and storage operations. While the dissolution of CO2 bubbles in reservoir brine is a crucial mechanism towards safe CO2 storage, it is a process that occurs at the pore-scale and is not yet fully understood. Direct numerical simulation (DNS) models describing this type of dissolution exist and have been validated with semi-analytical models on simple cases like a rising bubble in a liquid column. However, DNS models have not been experimentally validated for more complicated scenarios such as dissolution of trapped CO2 bubbles in pore geometries where there are few experimental datasets. In this work we present an experimental and numerical study of trapping and dissolution of CO2 bubbles in 3D printed micromodel geometries. We use 3D printing technology to generate three different geometries, a single cavity geometry, a triple cavity geometry and a multiple channel geometry. In order to investigate the repeatability of the trapping and dissolution experimental results, each geometry is printed three times and three identical experiments are performed for each geometry. The experiments are performed at low capillary number representative of flow during CO2 storage applications. DNS simulations are then performed and compared with the experimental results. Our results show experimental reproducibility and consistency in terms of CO2 trapping and the CO2 dissolution process. At such low capillary number, our numerical simulator cannot model the process accurately due to parasitic currents and the strong time step constraints associated with capillary waves. However, we show that, for the single and triple cavity geometry.

Abstract:Fine bubbles with a diameter less than 1 mm are widely used to intensify the gas-liquid processes since the micro-interface they build can significantly improve the mass transfer of gases to the liquid phase. In this study, a coupled mathematical model of motion and mass transfer of a single fine bubble with multicomponent was established and verified for carbon dioxide desorption. The rising and dissolution behaviors of a single fine bubble with different external pressures and initial diameters were observed using a high-speed imaging tech-nique to evaluate the increasing velocity, V-b, and the mass transfer coefficient, k(L). Design indicators such as effective mass transfer height and residence stay time of the bubble have been established to guide the optical selection of initial bubble size and liquid level height (reactor height) for a bubbling reactor's optimal design and operation. The comparison between the theoretical calculations and the experimental results proves that the new model can well describe the movement and multicomponent mass transfer behavior of a single fine bubble in an aqueous solution, and the relative errors are less than 5%.

Abstract:In this work, the rise characteristics of shrinking CO 2 and non-shrinking N 2 bubbles in distilled water for a wide range of bubble sizes in ellipsoidal and wobbly regime (d eq = 1.5 mm to 6.5 mm) have been investigated. For these bubbles, their size, trajectory, and rise velocity have been measured using a moving camera system, while the dissolved CO 2 is qualitatively studied using a planar laser-induced fluorescence (P-LIF) technique. We explore the interplay between hydrodynamics and mass transfer using well-studied regimes in bubble behaviour. Our results show that the interrelation between mass transfer and bubble rise dynamics is quasi-steady in nature and strongly dependent on wake-induced effects: shape and path oscillations. Based on an analogy of the two phenomena, we conclude that the behaviour of smaller bubbles (<2 mm) as immobile spheres from a mass transfer perspective is not related to the mobility of the interface, but a lack of surface renewal of dissolved gas at the interface. We propose a mechanistic correlation for calculating the mass transfer coefficient, kL , in this regime of bubble size, using the knowledge of the drag coefficient.

Abstract:The dissolution of CO 2 into water has attracted much attention for the modeling of air-sea gas exchange, CO 2 sequestration into porous aquifers, and gas transport in bioreactors. In nearly all circumstances, the surface of water is covered by surfactants that make the gas-liquid interface behave elastically and exhibit surface (excess) shear viscosity. Here, transport and mixing of CO 2 across the interface is studied in an axisymmetric system with inertia. A rotating knife edge at the interface with negligible contact surface area takes advantage of surface shear viscosity to drive a strong overturning flow in the bulk via viscous coupling. When CO 2 is dissolved into water, this system has a forced convection nature that enhances the transport of CO 2 into water. This transport leads to intense radial gradients in the dissolved CO 2 resulting in baroclinic production of azimuthal vorticity which alters the underlying meridional flow and further enhances mixing by breaking down transport barriers. Flow visualization experiments reveal baroclinic instability and numerical simulations detail the hydrodynamics, including the effects of varying the CO 2 partial pressure above the water.
