Abstract:Upon supramolecular self-assembly, novel conductive hybrid nanofibers were successfully fabricated using three amphiphilic salts, azopyridinium, aniline hydrochloride, and alkylbenzenesulfate-based anionic surfactants. The interactions like π-π stacking and ionic bonding among the different compounds played important roles in preparation of these multicomponent hybrid nanofibers. These were demonstrated by measurements of XRD, UV-vis absorption, and FTIR spectra. Interesting conductivity in an order of magnitude of 1 × 10(-7) to 1 × 10(-5) S/cm was observed in films of the fabricated hybrid nanofibers, which was attributed to the existence of freely movable ions, showing their possible applications as bionanomaterials and nanoelectronic devices. The fabrication processes of the conductive nanofibers might provide references for simulation of nerve fibers in nature.

Abstract:Engineering highly active and robust carbon nanoarchitectures is critical for energy storage devices with fast and durable charge storage capability. Herein, a quinone-amine coupling route is reported to customize interwoven heterodiatomic carbon nanofiber networks (HCNN), triggered by the polymerization between electron-withdrawing benzoquinone and electron-donating 4, 4′-diaminodiphenyl ether through hydrogen-bonding and π − π stacking interactions. Modulating the NaNH2-assisted thermal programming triggers the in-situ templating effect of sodium inorganics in polymer scaffold voids to form abundant micropores, and induces the expansion effect of released gases (N2, O2, NH3) to broaden micropores to more mesopores. HCNN shows ion-compatible pore structures, exposed electrosorption platform (2384 m2 g−1), nanofiber topology, and rich N/O motifs (4.15/13.82 wt%). The subnanopores (0.87 nm) and secondary pores (0.66 nm) of HCNN are size-exclusively accessible for SO3CF3− anion (0.79 nm) and Li+ cation (0.65 nm) of LiCF3SO3 electrolyte, which empowers high accessibility of electroactive sites and rapid ion transfer, maximizing the spatial capacitive charge storage. The assembled HCNN-based aqueous supercapacitors achieve ultrahigh energy densities of 41.8 Wh kg−1 in LiCF3SO3 electrolyte and 110.6 Wh kg−1 in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid electrolyte. Besides, HCNN as the Zn-ion capacitor cathode harvests high capacity of 220 mAh g−1, high-rate tolerance (20 A g−1) and a superior lifespan of 20, 000 cycles. This work sheds lights on structural and functional design for high-performance carbons toward advanced electrochemical energy storage.

Abstract:This paper reports a facile method of fabricating high conductivity and good mechanical properties of ployvinylidene fluoride/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PVDF/MWNTs) nanofibrous composites by an ultrasonication anchoring technique. Microstructures, electrical conductivity, mechanical and thermal properties of the PVDF/MWNTs nanofibrous composites were studied. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the MWNTs were uniformly anchored onto the surface and interspace of PVDF nanofibrous composites and the conductive network structures were easily formed. The PVDF/MWNTs nanofibrous composites exhibited excellent conductivity of 10(-2) S m(-1) with 3.91 wt% MWNTs anchored. This work opens a new path to optimize the conductivity of thermoplastic polymer nanocomposites with a wide range of application in the field of electronic and electrical engineering. Abstract:Self-assembled nanofibers with different morphologies were successfully fabricated using amphiphilic low-molecular-weight (LMW) azopyridinium compounds having hydrophobic substituents on benzene groups. The possible driving force and self-assembly principles in nanofiber formation processes were proposed based on measurements of X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis absorption spectra and polarizing optical microscopy (POM). The complicated stackings between azopyridinium salts which were constructed by three aromatic units in azopyridinium molecules, i.e. the stackings between benzene groups (Bz-Bz), pyridine groups (Py-Py) and those of benzene with pyridine groups (Bz-Py), mainly acted as the driving force for formation of LMW-AzPy nanofibers. The changed steric hindrance and hydrophobic properties of substituents on benzene groups resulted in the two aggregation types, head-tail and head-head-tail-tail, of LMW-AzPy molecules. In these cases, the head and tail are hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts of LMW-AzPys molecules, respectively. The analyses and understanding of the driving force and aggregation types of LMW-AzPy nanofibers provides references for fabrication of supramolecularly self-assembled nanofibers with controllable behaviours.
Hybrid organic-inorganic nano-composites for solid-state battery electrolytes

Abstract:Desired properties of solid electrolytes are high ionic conductivity and transference number, high shear modulus to prevent dendrite growth, chemical compatibility with electrodes, and ease of fabrication into thin films. Especially, elastic stiffness and ionic mobility are opposing attributes in a homogenous material, and a composite approach towards designing novel electrolytes is therefore advisable. We use a two-step sol-gel method to synthesize silica-based hybrid organic-inorganic materials for this application. First, a continuous porous silica structure is created that provides electrochemical stability and mechanical rigidity. This network also contains unreacted epoxy groups. In step 2, single-sided amine-functionalized polyethene glycol (PEGNH2) infiltrates the pores via fluid exchange. As PEG-NH2 fills the pores, the amine groups react with the epoxy groups and anchor the polymer to the silica network, which provides highly conductive pathways. IR spectroscopy, Raman and Brillouin light scattering, impedance spectroscopy, small angel x-ray scattering (SAXS), charge-discharge cell testing is performed to identify the structural and chemical origins that underlie the performance of these hybrid electrolytes. A room temperature ionic conductivity in excess of 10-5 S/cm is reached (Fig. 1).

Abstract:Nanofibers have been widely used in the construction of proton exchange membranes(PEM), which can be used to modify Nafion membranes and enhance their mechanical properties. With the addition of nanofibers, some of the sulfonic acid active sites in the perfluorosulfonic acid matrix are occupied, and the conductivity decreases. A covalent organic framework (COF) can be used to compensate for this. In this paper, hybrid COFs modified with sulfonic and pyridine groups were selected and synthesized in situ on polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers, and the fibers were placed in a perfluorosulfonic acid matrix to form a sandwich shaped composite membrane. The hybrid COF generates a small fiber-like structure to connect the PAN fibers, which improves the connectivity between three-dimensional nanofibers. This structure also plays a role in enhancing longitudinal proton transport ability of the composite membrane, which provides a new idea in the study of PEM.

Abstract:Abstract Electroconductive hydrogels have been applied in implantable bioelectronics, tissue engineering platforms, soft actuators, and other emerging technologies. However, achieving high conductivity and mechanical robustness remains challenging. Here we report an approach to fabricating electroconductive hydrogels based on the hybrid assembly of polymeric nanofiber networks. In these hydrogels, conducting polymers self-organize into highly connected three dimensional nanostructures with an ultralow threshold (~1 wt%) for electrical percolation, assisted by templating effects from aramid nanofibers, to achieve high electronic conductivity and structural robustness without sacrificing porosity or water content. We show that a hydrogel composed of polypyrrole, aramid nanofibers and polyvinyl alcohol achieves conductivity of ~80 S cm −1 , mechanical strength of ~9.4 MPa and stretchability of ~36%. We show that patterned conductive nanofiber hydrogels can be used as electrodes and interconnects with favorable electrochemical impedance and charge injection capacity for electrophysiological applications. In addition, we demonstrate that cardiomyocytes cultured on soft and conductive nanofiber hydrogel substrates exhibit spontaneous and synchronous beating, suggesting opportunities for the development of advanced implantable devices and tissue engineering technologies.

Abstract:Aiming to fabricate highly flexible conductors via a facile method, hybrid fillers of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon fiber (CF) were incorporated with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) using a solution blending method. The results showed that the hybrid fillers evidently decreased the composite resistivity and the lowest resistivity was achieved with the composite that had 6:4 CNT/CF ratio when the total filler content was 1 wt%. Due to the low filler content, the stretching strains of the composites reached greater than 200%, and the conductive network which was formed by flexible CNT and rigid CF was sensitive to strain and the related resistance change of resulted composites reached 2480.5% with a gauge factor of 50. The alternating current electrical, rheological and morphological property measurements were performed, and the results presented the existence of synergistic effect between the hybrid fillers in the conductive networks which decreased resistivity of composites. Therefore, the PDMS/CNT/CF nanocomposites are good candidates for application as inflexible sensors.

Abstract:With the elaborate engineering of supra-amphiphiles based on dual charge-transfer interactions, the rational design and programmable transformation of well-defined 1D and 2D nanostructures have been demonstrated. First, H-shaped supra-amphiphiles are successfully obtained on the basis of the directional charge-transfer interactions of naphthalene diimide and naphthalene, which self-assemble in water to form 2D nanosheets. Second, by complexation of the H-shaped supra-amphiphiles with pyrene derivatives, the 2D nanosheets transform into ultralong 1D nanofibers. Therefore, this line of research represents a successful example of supramolecular engineering and has enriched its realm.

Synergic effect in the enhancement of the electrical conductivity of polymer hybrid nanocomposites containing 1 D and 2 D carbon nanofillers

Abstract:The hybrid carbon conductive nanoparticles to obtain polymer nanomaterials based on epoxy resin, poly(etherimide) (PEI), condensing polyesters (PET, PTT) and thermoplastic elastomers (PTT–block–PTMO) have been used. The influence of the addition of carbon nanotubes (singleand multi-walled), carbon nanofibers, graphene derivatives, and mixtures of both, on the electrical conductivity properties as well as the possibility to obtain the so called synergic effect of the enhancement of electrical conductivity. The aim of the research was obtaining polymer hybrid nanocomposites containing nanoparticles differ in shape (1D and 2D), which due to the high aspect ratio and a specific high surface area show a strong tendency to agglomeration. Resulting in the process of chemical synthesis of the polymer matrix (in situ) polymer hybrid nanocomposites were characterized by a high degree of uniformity of the structure and improved physical properties (much lower percolation thresholds in relation to composites based for example on epoxy resin or poly(etherimide)). Efficiency of in situ polymerization in obtaining hybrid nanomaterials has been evaluated through synthesis of thermoplastic polyesters (PET and PTT) and with thermoplastic elastomers (PTT–block–PTMO). The conditions for preparing 1D and 2D nanoparticle dispersions in a liquid substrate has been established using ultrasonic vibration alternately with a mechanical stirrer and conducting the synthesis depending on the type of polymer matrix. It was also shown that the addition of single-walled carbon nanotubes and graphene nanoplatelets with a concentration of not higher than 0.6 wt % to the condensation polymers allows obtaining lightweight, electrically conductive composite materials with improved thermal stability and improved mechanical properties. Additionally, for nanocomposites based on PTT–block–PTMO the positive hybrid effect has been observed, for both, improvement in mechanical properties and electrical conductivity. It was observed that the graphene nanoplatelets are fairly evenly distributed throughout the polymer and specifically linked to carbon nanotubes. This connection plays an essential role in the creation of the conduction paths in the hybrid nanocomposite. The observed synergistic hybrid effect is the result of the phenomena occurring in the polymer in the presence of carbon nanoparticles and the effects on the verge of a filler–filler and filler–polymer.

Abstract:Bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (BZIFs) have received enormous attention due to their unique physi-chemical properties, but are rarely reported for electrically conductive hydrogel (ECH) applications arising from low intrinsic conductivity and poor dispersion. Herein, we propose an innovative strategy to prepare highly conductive and mechanically robust ECHs by in situ growing Ni/Co-BZIFs within the polyvinyl alcohol/sodium alginate dual network (PZPS). 2-methylimidazole (MeIM) ligands copolymerize with pyrrole monomers, enhancing the electrical conductivity; meanwhile, MeIM ligands act as anchor points for in-situ formation of BZIFs, effectively avoiding phase-to-phase interfacial resistance and ensuring a uniform distribution in the hydrogel network. Due to the synergism of Ni/Co-BZIFs, the PZPS hydrogel exhibits a high areal capacitance of 630.3 mF·cm-2 at a current density of 0.5 mA·cm-2, promising for flexible energy storage devices. In addition, PZPS shows excellent mechanical strength and toughness (with an ultimate tensile strength of 405.0 kPa and a toughness of 784.2 kJ·m-3 at an elongation at break of 474.0 %), a high gauge factor of up to 4.18 over an extremely wide stress range of 0-42 kPa when used as flexible wearable strain/pressure sensors. This study provides new insights to incorporating highly conductive and uniformly dispersed ZIFs into hydrogels for flexible wearable electronics.

Abstract:Stimuli‐responsive hydrogels with decent electrical properties are a promising class of polymeric materials for a range of technological applications, such as electrical, electrochemical, and biomedical devices. In this paper, thermally responsive and conductive hybrid hydrogels are synthesized by in situ formation of continuous network of conductive polymer hydrogels crosslinked by phytic acid in poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) matrix. The interpenetrating binary network structure provides the hybrid hydrogels with continuous transporting path for electrons, highly porous microstructure, strong interactions between two hydrogel networks, thus endowing the hybrid hydrogels with a unique combination of high electrical conductivity (up to 0.8 S m−1), high thermoresponsive sensitivity (significant volume change within several seconds), and greatly enhanced mechanical properties. This work demonstrates that the architecture of the filling phase in the hydrogel matrix and design of hybrid hydrogel structure play an important role in determining the performance of the resulting hybrid material. The attractive performance of these hybrid hydrogels is further demonstrated by the developed switcher device which suggests potential applications in stimuli‐responsive electronic devices.

Abstract:By using the low loading of the conductor filler to achieve high conductivity is a challenge associated with electrically conductive adhesion. In this study, we show an assembling of nickel-coated polystyrene (Ni@PS) microspheres into 3-dimensional network within the epoxy resin with the assistance of an electric field. The morphology evolution of the microspheres was observed with optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The response speed of Ni@PS microsphere to the electric field were investigated by measuring the viscosity and shear stress variation of the suspension at a low shear rate with an electrorheological instrument. The SEM results revealed that the Ni@PS microspheres aligned into a pearl-alike structure. The AC impedance spectroscopy confirmed that the conductivity of this pearl-alike alignment was significantly enhanced when compared to the pristine one. The maximum enhancement in conductivity is achieved at 15 wt. % of Ni@PS microspheres with the aligned composites about 3 orders of magnitude as much as unaligned one, typically from ~10−5 S/m to ~10−2 S/m.

Abstract:A battery of siloxane (SiO)/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCT) core-shell hybrids are successfully fabricated by encapsulating MWCTs with siloxanes via the hydrolysis-condensation reaction. First, MWCT is treated by the surfactant to improve the surface polarity. Then, the hydrolysis-condensation reaction of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and different saline coupling agents is performed on the surface of MWCTs to achieve various core-shell hybrids. These hybrids serve as fillers of epoxy resin (EPR) to prepare high-performance thermally conductive, electrically insulating and strength-enhanced composites at low fillers loadings. The SiO/MWCT/EPR composite possesses high thermal conductivity (0.55 W m−1 K−1, which is 196.7% higher than pure EPR) and excellent electrical insulation (>1012 Ω) at 1 wt% filler loading. The thermal conductivity improvement mechanism for these composites containing SiO/MWCT core-shell hybrids is demonstrated in detail. Moreover, the siloxane encapsulation route for MWCTs significantly declines their electrical conductivity, which greatly upgrades the practical value of as-prepared thermal conductivity composites.

Abstract:Silver dendrites were prepared by a facile replacement reaction between silver nitrate and zinc microparticles of 20 μm in size. The influence of reactant molar ratio, reaction solution volume, silver nitrate concentration, and reaction time on the morphology of dendrites was investigated systematically. It was found that uniform tree-like silver structures are synthesized under the optimal conditions. Their structure can be described as a trunk, symmetrical branches, and leaves, which length scales of 5–10, 1–2 μm, and 100–300 nm, respectively. All features were systematically characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM, and x-ray powder diffraction. A hybrid fillers system using silver flakes and dendrites as electrically conductive adhesives (ECAs) exhibited excellent overall performance. This good conductivity can be attributed mainly to the synergy between the silver microflakes (5–20 μm sized irregular sheet structures) and dendrites, allowing more conductive pathways to be formed between the fillers. In order to further optimize the overall electrical conductivity, various mixtures of silver microflakes and silver dendrites were tested in ECAs, with results indicating that the highest conductivity was shown when the amounts of silver microflakes, silver dendrites and the polymer matrix were 69.4 wt.% (20.82 vol.%), 0.6 wt.% (0.18 vol.%), and 30.0 wt.% (79.00 vol.%), respectively. The corresponding mass ratio of silver flakes to silver dendrites was 347:3. The resistivity of ECAs reached as low as 1.7 × 10−4 Ω cm.

Abstract:Four types of novel inorganic–organic hybrid zwitterionic polymers were successfully synthesized through sol–gel process. The polymer precursors were obtained by a reaction of N-[3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl] ethylene diamine (TMSPEDA), under non-aqueous conditions, with 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS), and followed by a reaction with γ-butyrolactone (γ-BL), and then exposure to open air to generate the hybrid zwitterionic polymers. The final polymers and products were characterized by FTIR, 13C NMR, TGA and conductometric titration curves. Both FTIR and 13C NMR spectra of polymers demonstrate the generation of ion pairs in these hybrid zwitterionic polymers. The TGA analysis reveals that the thermal stability of these types of hybrid zwitterionic polymers could go up to 350°C. The relationships between conductivity and pH values show that the conductivities and the amphiphilic behaviors of hybrid zwitterionic polymers can be influenced by pH values; and the isoelectric point (IEP) of these kinds of hybrid zwitterionic polymers was pH 6.68–8.20, while the apparent contents of both anionic and cationic groups in the polymers are in the range of (1.1–2.1)×10−4 and (2–8.0)×10−5mol/g, respectively. These kinds of polymers are expected to have applications to create anti-fouling membranes and single ionic conductors as well as to separate multi-valent ionic salts, etc.
