Abstract:A series of Mg(Ca)Zr-doped acid-base bifunctional mesoporous silica were synthesized to study the impact of the one-step or two-step impregnation method on material structure. The two-step method seems to be a better way to synthesize metal-based functionalized catalyst and their catalytic performance is investigated using deacetalization-Knoevenagel reaction as the probe reaction. The coexisting dual active sites and suitable designing routes endowed highly efficient (Conv. >99.6%, Sel. >99.8%) and robust stability (10 consecutive cycles) of these materials. The present process succeeded in preparing catalysts decorated with acid-base sites by doping acidic and alkali metal species rather than grafting organic groups.

Abstract:Mesoporous carbonaceous materials have outstanding potential in many different applications such as adsorption, medicine and catalysis. We have recently reported the synthesis of a new form of mesoporous carbon, named Starbon®, obtained after low temperature carbonization of expanded starch. Such starch-derived mesoporous materials have several tunable properties including surface energies (ranging from hydrophilic to hydrophobic surfaces), which can be easily controlled by the degree of carbonization (from 200 to 700°C). Due to the diversity of surface functional groups, Starbons® can be easily chemically modified. Treatment of Starbon® materials with sulfuric acid gave a solid acid that has promising properties as heterogeneous catalyst. Comparative catalytic studies with some other similar commercial carbonaceous materials such as DARCO® and NORIT®, as well as phosphorous-containing microporous carbons, are reported.

Abstract:Solid acid catalysts of graphene oxide and sulfonated graphene oxide nanosheets have been prepared by using the modified Hummers and sulfonation methods. Physical characterization indicated that a number of functional groups such as -COOH, -OH, -O-, and -SO3H were introduced onto the surfaces of the as-synthesized nanosheets. The catalytic performance of the synthesized catalysts was evaluated in the hydrolysis of the glycosidic bond and Fischer esterification. The experimental results indicated that the catalytic activity of the sulfonated graphene oxide was superior to that of other solid acid catalysts with the same or higher acid strength and has also exceeded that of H2SO4 with 9.1 times of acid strength than that of the sulfonated graphene oxide. The high reactivity can be ascribed to the formation of hydrophobic cavities through the combination of graphene sheet and the oxygen-containing groups on its surface, which may facilitate the catalyst to anchor with reactants and promote the attack of protons.

Abstract:Here, we reported an excellent carbon-based solid acid catalyst for the catalytic synthesis of biodiesel, which was prepared by carbonizing a mesoporous phenolic resin and then followed by sulfonation with concentrated sulfuric acid. The influence of carbonization temperature on the pore structure and acidity was studied. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy dispersive spectrum analysis and an indirect titration method were used to demonstrate the successful modification of -SO3H groups on the carbon surface and determine the acidities of catalysts. N-2 adsorption-desorption and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the mesoporous structure and pore structure parameters. These results indicated that the sulfonated catalyst carbonized at a low temperature (400 degrees C) showed the highest acidity of 2.21 mmol H+ g(-1), meanwhile, retaining a mesoporous structure and relatively large surface area. The esterification reaction of oleic acid with methanol was employed to evaluate the performance of catalysts. The sulfonated mesoporous carbon catalyst exhibited a highly efficient activity, above 95% conversion of oleic acid with a 30 : 1 methanol/oleic acid at 70 degrees C for 3 h. Experimental parameters, including the molar ratio of reactants, reaction time and reaction temperature, were optimized and a superior recycling property was presented after five consecutive cycles.

Abstract:Porous carbon materials are of interest in many applications because of their high surface area and physicochemical properties. Conventional syntheses can only produce randomly porous materials, with little control over the pore-size distributions, let alone mesostructures. Recent breakthroughs in the preparation of other porous materials have resulted in the development of methods for the preparation of mesoporous carbon materials with extremely high surface areas and ordered mesostructures, with potential applications as catalysts, separation media, and advanced electronic materials in many scientific disciplines. Current syntheses can be categorized as either hard-template or soft-template methods. Both are examined in this Review along with procedures for surface functionalization of the carbon materials obtained.

Abstract:Mesoporous sulfonic acid catalysts (MSAC) are widely used in acid-catalyzed reactions, including biomass conversions with plenty of polar solvents and precursors. The catalytic efficiency of MSAC is greatly affected by the microenvironment around the sulfonic acid sites. In this review, the progress on modification of microenvironment of MSAC is reviewed over the past decade. Hydrophobic modification allows MSAC prevent the adhesion of water molecules onto sulfonic acid sites, to abate the risk of reduced acid strength and catalytic efficiency. In comparison, hydrophilic properties can bring positive effect on acid-catalyzed reactions with the aid of hydrophilic interaction between polar functional groups on MSAC and hydrophilic groups of specific substrates. Amphiphilic MSAC with tunable wettability for specific substrates and solvents tend to improve the efficiency in certain reactions with mixed solvents or reactants of different polarity, especially for biphasic systems of immiscible liquids. Furthermore, much attention has been attracted on modification of surface to simulate the microenvironment of homogeneous solvents and enzyme biocatalysts in recent research. New trends of this field are also highlighted.

Abstract:A novel carbon based strong acid catalyst has been synthesized through the sulfonation of the carbon materials from glucose. The novel acid catalyst was obtained through the hydrothermal carbonization instead of the traditional heat treatment, which made the carbonization process under much milder condition with higher yield. The novel heterogeneous catalyst owned the advantages of high acidity as much as 2.0 mmol/g, much higher than that of Nafion and Amberlyst-15 (0.8 mmol/g). The catalytic activities of the catalyst were investigated through the acetalization. The results showed that the novel catalyst was very efficient for the reaction. The novel carbon based acid catalyst holds great potential in the green chemical process.

Starbon®400-HSO3 was used as a green and easily recovered mesoporous carbonaceous solid acid catalyst and applied, for the first time, to more complex naturally-derived substrates, such as steroids.

Abstract:The "sulfonated carbons" are a new class of metal-free solid protonic acids characterized by their unique carbon structure and Brønsted acidity (-H0 = 8-11) on par to concentrated H2SO4. These carbon materials covalently functionalized with SO3H groups via C-PhSO3H or C-SO3H linkages can act as versatile water-tolerant solid acids. Due to their low production costs, unique surface chemistry, high chemical and thermal stability, as well as tailorable pore structures they are regarded as potential substitutes to liquid H2SO4. Catalysis, in particular, biomass and large molecule catalysis, is one of the important areas in which acidic carbons have demonstrated exceptional activity and selectivity, outperforming traditional solid acid catalysts (cation-exchange resins, sulfated oxides, and acidic zeolites). In this review we address developments in the different types SO3H- and PhSO3H-functionalized acidic carbon materials, their structure, active sites, and surface properties, applications in catalysis, as well as activation and deactivation characteristics covering important literature since 2004. In particular, we aim to provide a systematic discussion on the specific merits and demerits of such materials obtained from different carbon precursors and functionalization methods which directly influence the structure-stability-acidic properties and catalytic performance.

Abstract:Various Starbon® supported solid acids were prepared and investigated in two test reactions, namely the acetylation of 5-acetyl-methylsalicylate and the alkylation of phenol with cyclohexene. Starbon®-SO3H materials exhibited in general an optimum balance of Lewis and Bronsted acid sites, making them ideal catalysts for the investigated processes. Starbon acids were comparably active and differently selective compared to similar solid acids utilised in the proposed acid catalysed processes including commercial sulphated zirconia and beta zeolite. Materials were also highly reusable under the different reaction conditions, preserving their activities almost unchanged after 4 reuses.

Abstract:Palladium nanoparticles were successfully prepared using porous materials derived from starch as support media. The nanoparticle size distribution was controllable by selection of the preparation solvent. Materials were characterised and catalytically tested in various C–C coupling reactions, exhibiting excellent catalytic activities in the microwave-assisted Heck, Suzuki and Sonogashira reactions. The palladium-supported materials were also reusable, preserving their catalytic activities after four reuses.

Abstract:A stable and highly active ordered mesoporous polymer-based acid catalyst has been prepared via a simple surfactant templating approach and oxidation treatment. The composition and nanostructure are characterized by XRD, NMR, XPS, TEM, nitrogen sorption, elemental and chemical analysis. The sulfonic acid groups have been anchored within the well-arranged channels of the polymer-based matrix. Even with a high –SO3H group loading (up to about 27.4 wt%) on the mesoporous polymer-based material, the ordered mesostructure and high surface area (400 m2 g−1) can be retained and the functional moieties are highly chemically accessible. With the large number of acid sites (0.93–2.38 H+ mmol g−1 determined by acid–base titration) and the hydrophobic character, the mesoporous polymer-based solid exhibits unique catalytic performance in acid-catalyzed reactions such as condensation and acetalization, not only high activity (per site yield of bisphenol-A is over 45 in the condensation of phenol and acetone) but also excellent stability. Loss in acidic loading and activity is negligible even after the catalyst is reused 20 times in the acetalization of butanediol and aldehyde. The stability is most likely attributed to the hydrophobic nature of the mesoporous polymer-based solids, which favors the diffusion of water and thereby inhibits the poisoning of acidic sites caused by water generating in the reaction. Moreover, with large mesopores, the diffusion of reactants and products can be promoted and hence the catalytic activity can be further increased.

Abstract:Functionalized nanoporous carbon materials have attracted the colossal interest of the materials science fraternity owing to their intriguing physical and chemical properties including a well-ordered porous structure, exemplary high specific surface areas, electronic and ionic conductivity, excellent accessibility to active sites, and enhanced mass transport and diffusion. These properties make them a special and unique choice for various applications in divergent fields such as energy storage batteries, supercapacitors, energy conversion fuel cells, adsorption/separation of bulky molecules, heterogeneous catalysts, catalyst supports, photocatalysis, carbon capture, gas storage, biomolecule detection, vapour sensing and drug delivery. Because of the anisotropic and synergistic effects arising from the heteroatom doping at the nanoscale, these novel materials show high potential especially in electrochemical applications such as batteries, supercapacitors and electrocatalysts for fuel cell applications and water electrolysis. In order to gain the optimal benefit, it is necessary to implement tailor made functionalities in the porous carbon surfaces as well as in the carbon skeleton through the comprehensive experimentation. These most appealing nanoporous carbon materials can be synthesized through the carbonization of high carbon containing molecular precursors by using soft or hard templating or non-templating pathways. This review encompasses the approaches and the wide range of methodologies that have been employed over the last five years in the preparation and functionalisation of nanoporous carbon materials via incorporation of metals, non-metal heteroatoms, multiple heteroatoms, and various surface functional groups that mostly dictate their place in a wide range of practical applications.

However, relatively low surface area and small micropores of conventional solid acids have strongly limited their practical applications. This article systemically reviews the synthesis and catalysis performance of mesoporous solid acids including (1) mesoporous aluminosilicates, (2) mesoporous zeolites, (3) mesoporous sulfated zirconia, (4) mesoporous hybrid inorganic–organic materials, and (5) mesoporous resins.

Abstract:A number of years ago the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence at York discovered new high surface area forms of polysaccharides. Further study of these materials has found that after controlled thermal treatment they exhibit remarkable thermal properties, which have enabled us to make an entirely new class of materials with properties ranging from starch-like to carbon-like (see figure 1).([1]) Trademarked Starbon (R) this novel family of mesoporous materials have surface functionalities ranging from hydrophilic to hydrophobic and utilizes the natural ability for polysaccharides to retain their organized structure during pyrolysis. The mesoporous Starbon (R) family now consists of a continuum of materials from a number of different polysaccharides from renewable sources.([2])This technology has been applied to a number of areas such as solid acid/base catalysis, catalyst supports, water purification, and chromatography and has recently been developed into a scalable commercial product.

Abstract:Since the 1990s, there has been rapidly expanding development of solid materials with mesoporous structure, of which mesoporous carbons are an important family. Toward the design of functional materials, mesoporous carbons with various compositions have been prepared for specific uses, such as catalysts, adsorbents, and electrode materials. Some of those novel materials indeed show promising performance in several fields, such as nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon for oxygen reduction reactions in fuel cells and mesoporous carbon nitride for photocatalysis. This Mini-review summarizes recent advances in the design, synthesis, characterization, and application of mesoporous carbons with functional compositions and briefly discusses next-generation mesoporous carbons.

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalysis is an exciting field in constant development. New and improved catalysts that can both be effective and economical are always on demand. Activated carbons may well play an important role in this field, as they are a cheaper alternative while more environmentally benign. In this paper, a brief overview of the effort developed in the application of activated carbon as heterogeneous catalysts in various reactions is presented. Functionalised activated carbon has been used as catalyst for fine chemical reactions. Gas-phase reactions for NO, N2O and CO2 conversions were thoroughly studied using activated carbon as catalyst support. In situ characterization techniques proved to be valuable tools to understand carbon gasification mechanism.

Abstract:The synthesis of hierarchically porous Starbon(R) based materials from initially highly mesoporous Starbons(R) is reported. Mesoporous starbons(R) are prepared from three different biopolymers: starch, alginic acid and pectin and each is then activated using three different activating agents: potassium hydroxide, carbon dioxide and oxygen to give a set of hierarchically porous Starbons(R) which retain the mesopores of the precursor whilst becoming predominantly microporous. The hierarchically porous materials are characterised using nitrogen porosimetry, CHN analysis, ICP-OES, XPS, SEM and TEM imaging. It is shown that the hierarchically porous Starbons(R) have higher carbon dioxide adsorption capacities than either the mesoporous Starbon(R) precursors or conventional microporous activated carbon. The materials show selectivities of up to 64 for adsorption of carbon dioxide versus nitrogen and only lose only 3-7% of their carbon dioxide adsorption capacities when the carbon dioxide is saturated with water. The carbon dioxide capture capacity of all 50 Starbon(R) materials showed a strong and positive linear correlation with the product of the materials ultramicropore surface area and ratio of ultramicropore (0.4-0.7 nm) volume to total pore volume.
