Abstract:Porous cross-linked polymers containing pendant triazole groups were synthesized from glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) in the presence of divinylbenzene via high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) templating method followed by functionalization with sodium 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (ATANa). They were characterized with FTIR, SEM, BET, and mercury intrusion and assessed as CO2 adsorbents. With interconnected hierarchical porous structure and abundant triazole groups which absorbed CO2 chemically in 1:1 stoichiometry, the adsorbents exhibited high CO2 adsorption capacity (3.6 mmol g(1), at 25 degrees C and 1 atm) and rate, and good CO2/N-2 selectivity (similar to 30). The adsorbents also displayed easy CO2 desorption with medium desorption heat (58 kJ/mol CO2), acceptable moisture endurance, and excellent recyclability. The results suggest that these functionalized porous polymers are potential adsorbents for CO2 capture

Abstract:Active carbons were prepared from low cost ion exchange resin, the samples were characterized by means of low temperature (-196 degrees C) N-2 adsorption, XPS, SEM, TEM, etc., and performance in CO2 and phenol adsorption were evaluated. It was found that samples with hierarchical structures and highly developed micro-mesoporous system could be obtained owing to the pre-induced highly dispersed potassium species by ion exchange, which served as an efficient activation agent, this represents an important improvement as compared with the normally reported KOH activation protocol in terms of lowering the usage of the corrosive KOH, and thus the sustainability of the obtained material. The optimized sample, R-K-700, showed the highest CO2 and phenol uptake of 13.6 wt.% and 167.3 mg/g, respectively, and more importantly, samples with an ordered spherical form and similar adsorption performance to the powdered sample can be easily fabricated, making the current carbons and preparation methodology a great promise for practical applications. Abstract:Porous carbon materials have been prepared which a wide range of technologically important applications, including separation science, heterogeneous catalyst supports, water purification filters, stationary phase materials, as well as energy generation and storage applications. Templated routes to ordered mesoporous carbons are well established, but the surface of the material is difficult to chemically post-modify and processing is energy and resource intensive and laborious. The production of carbon materials from biomass (i.e. sugars or polysaccharides) is a relatively new but rapidly expanding research area. Here we describe mesoporous polysaccharide derived "Starbons" carbonaceous material technology which is based on food waste valorization and yielding materials with flexible surface chemistries and remarkably mesoporous structures.

Abstract:AbstractMesoporous carbonaceous materials (Starbons®) derived from low‐value/waste bio‐resources separate CO2 from CO2/N2 mixtures. Compared to Norit activated charcoal (AC), Starbons® have much lower microporosities (8–32 % versus 73 %) yet adsorb up to 65 % more CO2. The presence of interconnected micropores and mesopores is responsible for the enhanced CO2 adsorption. The Starbons® also showed three–four times higher selectivity for CO2 adsorption rather than N2 adsorption compared to AC.
Resorcinol–formaldehyde Resin-Based Porous Carbon Spheres with High CO2 Capture Capacities

Abstract:Porous carbon spheres are prepared by direct carbonization of potassium salt of resorcinol-formaldehyde resin spheres, and are investigated as CO2 adsorbents. It is found that the prepared carbon materials still maintain the typical spherical shapes after the activation, and have highly developed ultra-microporosity with uniform pore size, indicating that almost the activation takes place in the interior of the polymer spheres. The narrow-distributed ultra-micropores are attributed to the "in-situ homogeneous activation" effect produced by the mono-dispersed potassium ions as a form of -OK groups in the bulk of polymer spheres. The CS-1 sample prepared under a KOH/resins weight ratio of 1 shows a very high CO2 capture capacity of 4.83 mmol/g and good CO2/N-2 selectivity of similar to 17-45. We believe that the presence of a welldeveloped ultra-microporosity is responsible for excellent CO2 sorption performance at room temperature and ambient pressure. From Polysaccharides to Starbons®

Abstract:Many commercially employed carbon materials are typically hydrophobic, chemically inert and microporous. Therefore, with an eye to the future, there is a need to develop new, carbon-based porous materials, the properties of which can be easily tuned to address the catalytic and separation challenges of future energy and chemical provision schemes (e.g. the Methanol Economy or Biorefinery schemes). In this regard, the synthesis of such materials must be conducted in as sustainable a manner as possible, ideally providing a flexible platform upon which to tailor properties such as functionality, porosity at different length scales (e.g. micro-, meso-, and macroporosity), hydrophilic character and macrophology (e.g. monoliths, particulates, etc.) amongst others. This chapter therefore aims to introduce one top-down synthetic approach to this end, the Starbon® materials concept. An accompanying material development history will be provided followed by a review of the variety of interesting functionally rich, highly mesoporous, high surface area (e.g. > 0.5 cm3 g–1; > 200 m2 g–1) carbonaceous materials that are accessible via the development of porous polysaccharide-derived materials and their subsequent carbonaceous derivatives. The chapter intends to provide the reader with an overview of the exciting opportunities that are open to the carbon materials chemist based on the discussed synthetic approach.
Structurally Designed Synthesis of Mechanically Stable Poly(benzoxazine-co-resol)-Based Porous Carbon Monoliths and Their Application As High-Performance CO2 Capture Sorbents

Abstract:Porous carbon monoliths with defined multi-length scale pore structures, a nitrogen-containing framework, and high mechanical strength were synthesized through a self-assembly of poly(benzoxazine-co-resol) and a carbonization process. Importantly, this synthesis can be easily scaled up to prepare carbon monoliths with identical pore structures. By controlling the reaction conditions, porous carbon monoliths exhibit fully interconnected macroporosity and mesoporosity with cubic Im3m symmetry and can withstand a press pressure of up to 15.6 MPa. The use of amines in the synthesis results in a nitrogen-containing framework of the carbon monolith, as evidenced by the cross-polarization magic-angle-spinning NMR characterization. With such designed structures, the carbon monoliths show outstanding CO2 capture and separation capacities, high selectivity, and facile regeneration at room temperature. At similar to 1 bar, the equilibrium capacities of the monoliths are in the range of 3.3-4.9 mmol g(-1) at 0 degrees C and of 2.6-3.3 mmol g(-1) at 25 degrees C, while the dynamic capacities are in the range of 2.7-4.1 wt % at 25 degrees C using 14% (v/v) CO2 in N-2. The carbon monoliths exhibit high selectivity for the capture of CO2 over N-2 from a CO2/N-2 mixture, with a separation factor ranging from 13 to 28. Meanwhile, they undergo a facile CO2 release in an argon stream at 25 degrees C, indicating a good regeneration capacity.

Rapid and efficient adsorption of methylene blue dye from aqueous solution by hierarchically porous, activated starbons®: Mechanism and porosity dependence

Abstract:Hierarchically porous activated Starbons® derived from starch are found to make excellent adsorbents for methylene blue, even in the presence of other dyes and inorganic salts, highlighting their potential to be used in water purification. The optimal material (S950C90) has a methylene blue adsorption capacity (891 mg g-1) almost nine times higher than that of unactivated S800 and four times higher than that of commercial activated carbon at 298 K. The adsorption of methylene blue onto optimal materials (S950C90 and S800K4) reaches equilibrium within 5 min. Adsorption data for all the adsorbents show a good fit to the Freundlich isotherm which allows the Gibbs free energies of adsorption to be calculated. The adsorption capacities increase as the pH of the methylene blue solution increases, allowing the dye to be desorbed by treatment with acidic ethanol and the Starbon® materials reused. Porosimetry and SEM-EDX imaging indicate that methylene blue adsorbs throughout the surface and completely fills all the micropores in the Starbon® adsorbent. The methylene blue adsorption capacities show excellent correlations with both the BET surface areas and the micropore volumes of the materials.

Abstract:A number of years ago the Green Chemistry Centre of Excellence at York discovered new high surface area forms of polysaccharides. Further study of these materials has found that after controlled thermal treatment they exhibit remarkable thermal properties, which have enabled us to make an entirely new class of materials with properties ranging from starch-like to carbon-like (see figure 1).([1]) Trademarked Starbon (R) this novel family of mesoporous materials have surface functionalities ranging from hydrophilic to hydrophobic and utilizes the natural ability for polysaccharides to retain their organized structure during pyrolysis. The mesoporous Starbon (R) family now consists of a continuum of materials from a number of different polysaccharides from renewable sources.([2])This technology has been applied to a number of areas such as solid acid/base catalysis, catalyst supports, water purification, and chromatography and has recently been developed into a scalable commercial product.

Abstract:A series of experiments were conducted to determine the chemical and physical differences between varieties of Starbon and activated carbon (AC). The adsorption process for all materials followed pseudo second order kinetics. High levels of adsorption were obtained for all materials; AC showed low levels of desorption for all bioactives over multiple washings, whereas the Starbons showed elevated desorption over the course of multiple washings.

Abstract:In this study, a facile strategy is reported for the preparation of porous carbon materials with adjustable pore size through carbonization of MOF-5 at 900 degrees C with the assistance of different additives. Results show that the physical and chemical properties (such as morphology, carbon defect content, BET specific surface area, pore structure) of the porous carbon materials can be adjusted through introduction of different compounds (i.e., C16H32O2, C6H14O6, C18H36O2, Na2CO3, KOH, Cu(NO3)2, NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, ethyl cellulose) during the carbon-ization processes. CO2 adsorption experiment results show that there is a linear relationship between the CO2 adsorption capacity (at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar) and the cumulative pore volume of pores at 5-7 angstrom, suggesting that pores in the range of 5-7 angstrom play a major role in CO2 adsorption at such condition. While the CO2 adsorption capacity (at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar) is independent on the BET specific surface area of the materials. Among the prepared porous carbon materials, 5C-C6H14O6-900 exhibits the highest CO2 adsorption capacity (i.e., 3.32 mmol/g at 25 degrees C and 1 bar, 0.88 mmol/g at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar), with good adsorption/desorption cycle stability and CO2/N2 selectivity. Our work provides a facile and general method to adjust and control the pore size dis-tribution of MOF-derived porous carbon materials. Besides, the analysis results indicate that the micropores in a specific pore size range play a decisive role in the adsorption of CO2 at low pressure, which provides a new idea for the preparation of high-efficiency adsorbents at low pressures.

Abstract:The controlled pyrolysis of mesoporous polysaccharide-derived materials, from starch and alginic acid, formed carbonaceous materials (Starbons (R)) and were demonstrated as efficient materials for the removal of dyes from wastewater. The resulting materials were characterised by solid-state NMR, N-2 adsorption porosimetry, FT-IR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and tunnelling electron microscopy (TEM). The material's efficiency for dye adsorption was tested using methylene blue (MB) and acid blue 92 (AB) dyes. Adsorption data indicated that the mesoporosity of the material had a far greater influence on the adsorption capacity and speed of adsorption, than high surface area alone. Mesoporous Starbon (R) (A300) was evaluated against commercially available activated carbon (Norit) and demonstrated a superior adsorption capacity of MB; 186 mg g(-1) vs. 42 mg g(-1). The kinetic activity of Starbon (R) was also determined with A800 showing the fastest rate of adsorption compared to S800 and Norit, suggesting that it is a more suitable material for water purification.
Nitrogen-Doped Starbons®: Methodology Development and Carbon Dioxide Capture Capability.

Abstract:Five nitrogen sources (glycine, beta-alanine, urea, melamine and nicotinamide) and three heating methods (thermal, monomodal microwave and multimodal microwave) are used to prepare nitrogen-doped Starbons (R) derived from starch. The materials are initially produced at 250-300 degrees C (SN(x)300(y)), then heated in vacuo to 800 degrees C to produce nitrogen-doped SN(x)800(y)'s. Melamine gives the highest nitrogen incorporation without destroying the Starbon (R) pore structure and the microwave heating methods give higher nitrogen incorporations than thermal heating. The carbon dioxide adsorption capacities of the nitrogen-doped Starbons (R) determined gravimetrically, in many cases exceed those of S300 and S800. The carbon dioxide, nitrogen and methane adsorption isotherms of the most promising materials are measured volumetrically. Most of the nitrogen-doped materials show higher carbon dioxide adsorption capacities than S800, but lower methane and nitrogen adsorption capacities. As a result, the nitrogen-doped Starbons (R) exhibit significantly enhanced carbon dioxide versus nitrogen and methane versus nitrogen selectivities compared to S800.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous lignin carbons with large mesopore sizes and mesopore volumes were synthesized using lignin as a renewable and sustainable polymeric precursor and siliceous mesostructured cellular foam as a template in a solvothermal process. The prepared lignin carbon materials, which are present in arrays of microspheres, showed a quasi-spherical porous morphology and were highly characterized by the rarely seen dominance of a three-dimensional large mesopore system that had a narrow pore size distribution centered at 20–25 nm with high surface areas of up to 960 m 2 g −1 and mesopore volumes of up to 1.50 cm 3 g −1 , respectively. The results also showed that the large-pore mesoporous framework could be readily tuned by varying the carbonization/activation temperature and the silica-to-lignin ratio by mass. Applying the as-prepared carbon materials as porous support for preparing CO 2 adsorbent materials demonstrated that the large-pore mesostructured carbon can effectively accommodate a large uploading capacity of polyamines, giving rise to a high CO 2 uptake capacity of 129.9 mg-CO 2 /g-adsorbent or 2.95 mmol-CO 2 /g-adsorbent with favorable adsorption kinetics at 75 °C and a CO 2 partial pressure of 0.15 bar, which is among the best sorbents ever reported under similar adsorption conditions.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous ZSM-5 (HP-ZSM-5) was constructed using organosilanes as the growth inhibitors for CO2 capture. The properties of adsorbents were characterized by X-ray diffraction, N-2 adsorption/desorption, scanning electron microscopy, temperature-programmed desorption of carbon dioxide, and Al-27 magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance. It was found that HP-ZSM-5 samples synthesized by organosilanes had a significant effect on the microstructure and morphology. CO, adsorption capacity of HP-ZSM-5 was up to 58.26 cm(3) g(-1) at 0 degrees C and 1 bar, significantly higher than that of the ZSM-5 sample. The effective improvement of CO2 adsorption performance mainly originated from the micro-/mesoporous composite structure and complex surface morphology, which can provide low -resistant pathways for CO2 through the porous network. Besides, in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was carried out to study the adsorption process on adsorbents, and the results indicated that a faster physical adsorption process was achieved as a result of the introduction of mesopores.

Abstract:Owing to the exponential increase in human populace and anthropogenic activities, there has been a significant release of CO 2 into the atmosphere, precipitating environmental quandaries such as the greenhouse effect. Consequently, the sequestration of CO 2 emerges as an imperative endeavor. While prior research has illuminated the potential of surface-modified biochar to augment its sequestration efficacy via avenues such as activation and nitrogen doping, scant attention has been devoted to diatomic modification strategies. In this investigation, a novel array of nitrogen and sulfur co-doped porous carbons were engineered, utilizing discarded bamboo shoot husks as a carbonaceous substrate, thiourea as a dual-source dopant for nitrogen and sulfur, and potassium carbonate as an activating agent, through an intricate triphasic synthesis procedure. The study meticulously evaluated their CO 2 sequestration capabilities, scrutinizing the influence of activator concentration and thermal activation conditions on the adsorption dynamics. The resultant N, S co-doped activated carbons manifested superlative CO 2 capture capacities. A salient specimen, designated BSNC-800–2, showcased an unparalleled CO 2 adsorptive uptake of 5.93 mmol/g at 0 °C and 3.83 mmol/g at 25 °C, attributable to its expansive specific surface area and substantive microporous volume. It was discerned that the interplay between the dopant concentrations and the proportion of narrow micropores was pivotal in modulating CO 2 adsorption efficacy. Furthermore, these samples exhibited a suite of remarkable CO 2 adsorption attributes, encompassing robust cyclic stability, elevated CO 2 /N 2 selectivity, and a moderate heat of adsorption. Isothermal adsorption model simulations at 25 °C across all samples demonstrated a high fidelity to empirical observations when aligned with the Freundlich isotherm. Thermodynamic assessments posited that the sequestration of CO 2 via the nitrogen-sulfur co-doped bamboo-derived porous carbons proceeded as a spontaneous and exothermic process, thereby corroborating the adsorbents' proficiency in CO 2 entrapment. This study is anticipated to inspire new methods for synthesizing nitrogen-sulfur co-doped carbon and provide fresh insights into CO 2 adsorption from flue gas using hetero-doped carbon.

Abstract:Multiscale carbon supraparticles (SPs) are synthesized by soft-templating lignin nano- and microbeads bound with cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). The interparticle connectivity and nanoscale network in the SPs are studied after oxidative thermostabilization of the lignin/CNF constructs. The carbon SPs are formed by controlled sintering during carbonization and develop high mechanical strength (58 N·mm–3) and surface area (1152 m2·g–1). Given their features, the carbon SPs offer hierarchical access to adsorption sites that are well suited for CO2 capture (77 mg CO2·g–1), while presenting a relatively low pressure drop (∼33 kPa·m–1 calculated for a packed fixed-bed column). The introduced lignin-derived SPs address the limitations associated with mass transport (diffusion of adsorbates within channels) and kinetics of systems that are otherwise based on nanoparticles. Moreover, the carbon SPs do not require doping with heteroatoms (as tested for N) for effective CO2 uptake (at 1 bar CO2 and 40 °C) and are suitable for regeneration, following multiple adsorption/desorption cycles. Overall, we demonstrate porous SP carbon systems of low cost (precursor, fabrication, and processing) and superior activity (gas sorption and capture).This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Lignosulfonate, as the large-scale by-products from the sulfite pulping, converting them to porous carbon is an alternative potential path. However, most sodium lignosulfonate (LS-Na) derived porous carbon all belonged to the dominated microporous carbon materials, and had poor graphitization degree and low heteroatoms content. Here, a series of hierarchically porous carbon with rich and controllable mesopores were firstly prepared from LS-Na by two dual template strategies. These carbon materials showed high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface areas (S BET ) of 230.6–1483.3 m 2 /g, hierarchical porous structure (mesopore content up to 84.5%), rich heteroatoms (N, O, S) doping (9.22–22.53%), and good graphitization structure. The incorporation of SBA-15 and Ni species as the nano-templates not only brought the unique micro-structure, but also enhanced mesoporous properties. SLS-C had the largest CO 2 uptake (206.2 mg/g) due to the largest micropore volume (V micro ) and ultramicropore volume (V ultra ) by micropore filling mechanism. SLS-S-Ni-C possessed effective iodine capacity (∼2.2 g/g) and good recycling (∼90.9%), the adsorption process was based on the dominated physical adsorption, meanwhile, also along with the weak chemical interaction for some iodine molecules by little strong binding sites. SLS-Ni-C had the largest equilibrium capacity of RhB (350.6 mg/g) and the fast adsorption kinetic (about 50 min) due to the large S BET , suitable micro-mesopores size and proportion. This work provided a kind of hierarchical porous carbon from LS-Na by dual template routes, and matched adsorbents for the removal of targeted contaminants.
