Abstract:Microbial inactivation using non-thermal gas discharge at atmospheric pressure has become a subject of significant research effort in the recent years. In this paper, we reviewed the different viewpoints proposed by various researchers, and discussed the reasons for arriving at these conclusions. We summarized some general rules, and offered a proposal to study the reasons behind their conclusions by building mathematical model for prediction of principle factors. Abstract:Water disinfection of E .coli by high frequency pulsed low electric fields was investigated .The effects of constructional ,electrical and aqueous parameters on disinfection efficiency and energy efficiency were evaluated .Experiments were performed with a 500 mL cylindrical reactor .Average electric intensity of 3‐12 kV/cm was applied and pulsed frequency was up to 20 000 Hz .Optimized structure of high voltage electrode were six equally distributed mesh electrodes with diameter of 40 mm .Both the disinfection efficiency and energy efficiency were enhanced by increasing the electric strength and pulse duration .Water conductivity could influence the pulsed waveforms and single pulse energy ,which changed the disinfection results . Reducing the initial bacterial density made the process more effective and easily realized sterilization .Pulsed frequency did not show any effect on disinfection ,but high frequency could greatly reduce treatment time .When pulsed voltage ,pulsed width ,water conductivity and initial bacteria density were 6 kV ,30 μs ,2 .5 μS/cm and 103‐106 cfu/mL ,respectively ,1‐2 logarithmic reduction were obtained with energy consumption less than 200 J/mL and water temperature lower than 40 ℃ .If initial bacterial density was less than 1 250 cfu/mL ,all the cells could be sterilized ,which was a non‐thermal processing .

Abstract:High-voltage(HV) discharges induce high-intensity electrical field that generates large quantities of electrons and radicals. Hence they are employed to control and remove pollutants. In this paper, we introduce several environmental applications of high-voltage discharge, such as removal of SO2, NOx, particles, VOCs and pollutants in water, ozone generation, sterilization and collection of micro-organism. For desulfuration and denitration using streamer corona discharges, heterogeneous oxidation of S(IV) is quicker than homogeneous oxidation, and increasing AC/DC, pulse power and energy density is the key for improving the removal efficiency. Electrostatic precipitator(ESP) has been developed for a long time, yet its improvement is impeded due to the inadequate development of device design and power technology, and reentrainment. Using ESP index instead of Deutsch Equation to guide ESP sizing and power optimization is conducive to improve ESP efficiency. When using HV discharge to produce ozone, the emphasis is on short-pulse power supply, additives and cooling. HV discharge is also employed to treat VOCs and waste water in various structures. The former one usually combines discharge with catalysis, while the latter includes discharge under or over liquid surface. However, both ——of them need to be improved in energy efficiency. HV discharge could deactivate micro-organism through radicals, UV or electrical field, yet it could also be used to collect micro-organisms while keeping their high activities. Nevertheless for environmental applications, the non-thermal plasma technology needs further development in pilot demonstration and integrated process.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe a pulsed low electric field process for water disinfection. Electric intensity of 0.6-1.7 kV cm(-1) is applied. Experiments are performed with a 1.2 L axis-cylinder reactor. A bipolar pulsed power source with pulsed width of 25 mu s and frequency of 100-3000 Hz is used. Water conductivity of 3-200 mu s cm(-1) is investigated, which can significantly affect pulsed voltage-current waveforms and injected energy. Energy per pulse rises with increased water conductivity. The initial E. Coli density and water conductivity are two major factors influencing the disinfection. No disinfection effect is performed with deionized water of 3 mu s cm(-1). When water conductivity is 25 mu s cm(-1) and bacteria density is 104(-1)06 cfu ml(-1), significant disinfection effect is observed. More than 99% of the cells can be disinfected with an energy density of less than 70 J ml(-1), while water temperature is below 30..

Abstract:The common compositions of a food sterilization system using high voltage pulsed electric field was explained.A high voltage pulse generator with a maximum output voltage of 15kV is developed and its working principle is described in detail.Besides,the structure of the processing chamber was designed and the distribution of electric field in the chamber was analyzed by computer simulation.Experimental results indicated that treated by this apparatus,bactericidal effect can be obviously enhanced by raising electric field and the sum of sterilized bacteria can be increased about 3 orders if the number of pulse is trebled;the greatest survivabilities of the sum bacteria remnant dropped more than 3.5 log.Research demonstrates that the developed apparatus has a better bactericidal effect than conventional ones.

Abstract:Ultra-high pressure sterilization technology is currently one of the popular non-thermal sterilization technologies of agricultural products(food).As one of the alternative heat sterilization technologies,it has the most industrialization potential.In recent years,this technology has become a hot area of agricultural products(food) sterilization technology,and the sterilization mechanism and influencing factors of sterilization effect are constantly have new discoveries.On the basis of summary and analysis of domestic and foreign research reports,this paper reviewed the mechanism research status of microorganisms impacted by high pressure from morphological,chemical reaction,gene mechanism and cell membrane.Experiments research status of factors influencing germicidal efficacy were also reviewed in this paper.Theoretical guidance is provided for its further research.

Abstract:In this paper, a new multiple-needle-cylinder reactor is designed to study the Escherichia coli inactivation with an unstable pulsed arc discharge in water and investigate the influence of several parameters for promoting its industrial application. The results show that the inactivation rate is mainly determined by energy density. About three orders reduction can be obtained with an initial cell count of 3 × 105 CFU/mL and energy density around 2 J/mL. The inactivation rate can almost reach 100% when the energy density is around 8 J/mL. For reaching the maximum inactivation rate of this system, the parameters including initial water conductivity below 50 μS/cm, initial cell count over 104 CFU/mL, and bubbling flow rate around 3.5 L/min are recommended. The water conductivity, pH value, and concentrations of hydrogen peroxide and ozone are also measured during the treatment to evaluate their influence. The transmission electron microscopy images of E. coli indicate that the intracellular morphology changes after plasma treatment.

Abstract:Electrohydraulic discharge (EHD) can generate localized plasma emitting high intensity ultraviolet, and generating shock wave and active species. It is a multiple mode-of-action approach of sterilization and disinfection. Based on a homemade experimental setup, including all Solid-switch capacitive pulsed power source and multi-electrode EHD reactor, we experimentally investigate the mechanism of EHD for chlorella inactivation.Typical energy range of the pulse power source is 5-500J with a repetition rate of 1-10Hz. Mono-current pulse wave is applied on the EHD reactor. We also design a multiple electrode configuration to increase the chlorella inactivation efficiency of over 90%. Besides, a monochromator combined with PMT and a high speed CCD camera system are used to detect the ultraviolet emission and pulsed plasma induced bubble growth process, respectively. After discharging, the concentration of chlorophyll measured by UV-visible spectrophotometer rises, which is caused by the broken up of chlorella cell.

Abstract:Atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) has a significant effect on the inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, virus and fungus. However, sterilization effect of APPJ is restricted by many factors: forms of the power supply (pulse, AC, DC, etc.), parameters of the voltage (amplitude, frequency), time and distance of processing, and the parameters of working gas. In this paper, the system consisting of the pulse power supply and the plasma generation device which uses coaxial cylinder tube, are developed by our research team independently. The system can generate plasma jets of low temperature under atmospheric pressure, using helium as working gas. In the experiment, Escherichia coli, which is typical and common in our environment, was used as the processing object to analyze the sterilization effect of APPJ under different power supply parameters, gas flow rate and processing time. In this paper the composition of plasma jet was analyzed by testing infrared spectra of it and the structure of bacteria was observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM) to study the principle of sterilization. The experimental results show that the active ingredients in APPJ will directly act on bacteria, making the bacterial structure destroyed, cell components lost completely and finally the bacteria inactivated; or the cell fragmentation will occur under the electric field, leading to the thorough loss of bacterial morphology. With the increase of the voltage amplitude or the gas velocity, the sterilization ratio of Escherichia coli increases continuously. Also lengthening the processing time is an effective measure to enhance the sterilization ratio of APPJ. When the processing time exceeds 1 minute, sterilization ratios under different parameters of power supply and gas flow rate can reach 90% or more. The sterilization effect of plasma jet can be obviously seen. Compared to traditional methods such as thermal, chemical and radiate sterilization, APPJ sterilization is more effective, cleaner and free from contamination.

Abstract:An air-insulated coaxial-falling film reactor was applied in drinking water sterilization in this study.The sterilization efficiency test results indicated that under the operational condition of 10 kV input voltage,12.5 kHz frequency and 50 s treatment time,the sterilization efficiency of corona discharge could achieve 3.85 and 3.77 orders of magnitude reduction for electric field sterilization.The higher sterilization efficiency for discharge sterilization was attributed to higher energy utilization efficiency compared with electric field sterilization.Furthermore,flow cytometer(FCM) and fluorescence microscope tests were utilized to reveal the sterilization mechanism.The results confirmed that both discharge and electric field sterilization can cause protein damage.However,in the case of electric field sterilization,the membrane damage was reversible,which resulted in the existence of sub-lethal cells.While in the case of discharge sterilization,the membrane damage was irreversible.The safety assessment of drinking water sterilization was also conducted by radical generation measurements.Our results showed that no radical was generated during electric field sterilization.Thus,based on all above mentioned results,electric field sterilization is a promising drinking water sterilization technology.

Abstract:The inactivation of airborne pathogenic microorganisms is crucial to attenuate the dissemination of infectious diseases induced by airborne pathogens. Conventional air disinfection methodologies, such as ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and ozone treatment, have demonstrated limited efficacy. Consequently, we investigated the potential of employing pulsed voltages to effectively eradicate bacteria within aerosols. Our inquiry revealed that the bacterial disinfection rate increased proportionally with elevated applied voltage and frequency. For instance, when a pulsed voltage of 20 kV and a frequency of 500 Hz were applied, a substantial disinfection rate exceeding 6.0 logarithmic units was attained. Furthermore, with the utilization of the stranded wire anodes, the disinfection intensity could be augmented by up to 2.0 logarithmic units compared with the solid wire configuration. Through the utilization of a stranded wire electrode model, we scrutinized the electric field encompassing the electrode, revealing a non-uniform electric field with the stranded wire electrode. This observation indicated an amplified bacterial disinfection effect, aligning with our experimental outcomes. These findings significantly enhance our comprehension of efficacious approaches to electrically disinfecting airborne bacteria.

Abstract:The atmospheric pressure surface barrier discharge (APSBD) in air has been used in killing Escherichia coli (E. coli). There is almost no bacterial colony in the sample after treatment by discharge plasma for 2 min. A diagnostic technique based on mass spectrum has been applied to the discharge gas and the mechanism of killing is discussed. Ozone and monatomic oxide are considered to be the major antimicrobial active species. There is almost no harmful by-product. The experiment proves that APSBD plasma is a very simple, effective and innocuous tool for sterilization.

Abstract:To test and verify the results of bacteria sterilization with plasma and to analyze the inactivation mechanisms,we get results of a series of experimentations by E.coli treated with two plasmas-DBD plasma jet and APMTP+JET plasma.We obtain the life curves of E.coli(Escherichia coli)by taking account of the bacteria nurtured in medium after being treated,and compare SEM(scanning electron microscopy) photographs taken before and after experimentation.It is found that the microwave plasma works better than DBD plasma jet does;the life curves show different regulations when treated by different plasma;active base and high-energy nuclear physics probably play an important role in experiments,and accumulated electrostatic charge takes effect;for microwave plasma,the high-temperature can not be ignored;other factors work in coordination.

Abstract:This research investigated whether electrostatic fields can be used to inactivate surface-borne and airborne microorganisms. Vegetative cells of Pseudomonas fluorescens and Bacillus subtilis var. niger were deposited on filters and subjected to electrostatic fields of different strengths and polarities for controlled time periods. In addition, P. fluorescens bacteria, which represent sensitive species, were aerosolized and exposed to electrostatic fields of up to 10 kV/cm. The results have shown that more than 90% of the P. fluorescens cells deposited on the surface of nonconductive filters are inactivated when fields of 15 kV/cm are applied for 30 min or longer. Similar effects were observed when P. fluorescens were exposed to fields of 5 and +/- 10 kV/cm for 2 h. In contrast, the culturability of B. subtilis var. niger cells exposed under the same conditions did not substantially decrease. Exposure of airborne P. fluorescens to +/- 10 kV/cm for 30 s also did not result in a significant reduction of culturability. This research has shown that specific combinations of electrostatic field strength and exposure time can be used to effectively inactivate certain bacterial cells deposited on nonconductive surfaces. For the investigated conditions, the treatment was not effective for bacteria in the airborne state.

Abstract:The killing logarithms index in killing a vegetative form in an explosure of about 90 S and a spore in an explosure of about 120 S, by using a low-temperature plasma produced by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), reached 5. The speed in killing the strains tested, by using a low-temperature plasma, was the highest with E. Coli, then S. Aureus and B. Subtilis var niger spore. The results of the scanning electron microscope showed that the low-temperature plasma destroyed the outer structure of the bacteria and that the vegetative form was more susceptible to the inactivation effect of the low-temperature plasma than was the spore. This indicated that the effects of the high voltage and high velocity particle flow, in plasma, penetrating through the outer structure of the bacteria might play a dominant role during the inactivation of the bacteria.
Sterilization of Escherichia Coli Cells by the Application of Pulsed Magnetic Field.

Abstract:The inactivation of microorganisms by pulsed magnetic field was studied. It was improved that the application of electromagnetic pulses evidently causes a lethal effect on E. coli cells suspended in phosphate buffer solution Na2HPO4/NaH2PO4 (0.334/0.867 mmol/L). Experimental results indicated that the survivability (N/N0; where N0 and N are the number of cells survived per milliliter before and after electromagnetic pulses application, respectively) of E. coli decreased with magnetic field intensity B and treatment time t. It was also found that the medium temperatures, the frequencies of pulse f, and the initial bacterial cell concentrations have determinate influences in destruction of E. coli cells by the application of magnetic pulses. The application of an magnetic intensity B = 160 mT at pulses frequency f= 62 kHz and treatment time t = 16 h result in a considerable destruction levels of E. coli cells (N/N0 = 10(-4)). Possible mechanisms involved in sterilization of the magnetic field treatment were discussed. In order to shorten the treatment time, many groups of parallel inductive coil were used. The practicability test showed that the treatment time was shortened to 4 h with the application of three groups of parallel coil when the survivability of E. coli cells was less than 0.01%; and the power consumption was about 0.2 kWh/m3.

Abstract:Destruction processe of Escherichia coli (E. coli) had been analyzed in a 02 flowing postdischarge reactor where has high quantity of oxygen atoms and other charged particles. The germicidal effect was investigated as a function of the treatment time, the discharge power, the sample position and the concentration of organic pollutant. The microstructure of E. coli before and after sterilization were observed with digital microscope. The results showed that under the optimum treatment conditions of 100 W and 60 s, E. coli could be inactivated effectively within the distance of 0 similar to 40 cm from the center of induction coil. But the germicidal effect reduced rapidly with increasing the concentration of organic pollutant, namely, the influence of organic pollutant on germicidal effect was great. The digital microscope pictures indicated that the intense penetrating through the outer membrane of bacilli by the discharged particles with high energy in flowing 02 postdischarge reactor played a major role during the treatment process.

Abstract:With increasing attention toward novel sterilization methods, plasma sterilization has gained more and more interest. However, the underlying mechanisms are still unknown. In this paper, we investigated the inactivation of Escherichia coli using dielectric-barrier discharge (DBD) plasma in saline water. There were three processes shown in the survival curve, namely, during the preparation period, the reaction period, and the saturation period. Observations under a transmission electron microscope (TEM) and detection by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) supplied adequate details regarding these processes. Based on these results, we infer that during the preparation period, the main process is the accumulation of chemical substances. During the reaction period, adequate amounts of chemicals decompose and denature cell membranes and macromolecules to kill bacteria in large quantities. During the saturation period, the killing effect decreases because of the protection by clustered cells and the saturation of pH. This study of sterilizing processes systematically reveals the mechanisms of plasma sterilization. IMPORTANCE Compared with traditional methods, plasma sterilization has advantages of high efficiency, easy operation, and environmental protection. This may be more suitable for air and sewage sterilization in specific spaces, such as hospitals, laboratories, and pharmaceutical factories. However, the mechanisms of sterilization are still relatively unknown, especially for bactericidal activities. Knowledge of sterilization processes provides guidance for practical applications. For example, the bactericidal action mainly occurs during the reaction period, and the treatment time can be set based on the reaction period, which could save a lot of energy. The results of this study will help to improve the efficiency of plasma sterilization devices.
