Abstract:Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) grafted with single-stranded (ss) DNA conjugate (PNIPAAm-g-DNA) self-assembles above its lower critical solution temperature to form colloidal particles. When the ssDNA within the particle hybridizes with its complementary DNA, the particles aggregate above a certain threshold of salt concentration with drastically increased turbidity in solution. Detailed structural information of the particle was obtained mainly by small-angle X-ray scattering. The influence of copolymer composition on the morphology of particle and non-crosslinking aggregation was examined. The particle consists of hydrophobic PNIPAAm core surrounded by hydrophilic DNA strands. The increase in DNA fraction brought about a significant decrease in core size, whereas the shell thickness little changed and corresponded to the length of DNA. A structural model with a sticky potential was applied to the analysis of particle aggregate. This analysis provided that the particles aggregate while the coronal layers interpenetrate each other. The interaction between the particles was quantified in terms of the sticky potential and showed a trend to be influenced by the particle size rather than the graft density of DNA strands on the particle.
Surface-field-induced Microstructures of Asymmetric Diblock Copolymer Nanoparticles

Abstract:The microstructures of asymmetric diblock copolymer nanoparticles were investigated using real-space self-consistent field theory. The nanoparticle boundary provides a spherical confinement in which the highly deformable copolymers are forced into a closed and crowded space. The surface-field-induced effects on the microstructures were examined systematically, and a rich variety of novel structures, such as mixtures of distorted cylinders and spherical lamellae, was observed in the copolymer nanoparticles. Investigations of the free energies indicate that the surface-field-induced structural transitions are of the first order. The formation mechanism of the confinement-induced structures was reasonably elucidated, based on the interactions between the polymer chains and confinement boundaries, and on the spherical symmetry from confinements. Our theoretical results are in good agreement with available simulation and experimental observations. The asymmetric diblock copolymer nanoparticles show a rich variety of novel structures, such as mixtures of distorted cylinders and spherical lamellae, due to the surface-field-induced effects from the nanoparticle surfaces.
Quantifying cation-π interactions in marine adhesive proteins using single-molecule force spectroscopy

Abstract:In marine adhesives, cation-π interactions play an important role in their liquid-liquid phase separation process and underlying their strong interfacial bonding. However, it remains challenging to study the strength of cation-π interactions at the single-molecule level. Here, we engineer a recombinant chimeric polyprotein containing the mussel foot proteins-5 (MFP5) and a finger print domain GB1 to unambiguiously quantify the strength of cation-π interactions using atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based single-molecule force spectroscopy. Our results show that the formation of intermolecular cation-π interactions can be triggered at elevated salt concentrations, consistent with previous ensemble studies. Individual cation-π interaction ruptures at about 70 pN at a pulling speed of 1.6 μm s−1, comparable to the strength of other non-covalent interactions. The strength of cation-π interactions is weakly dependent on pH, which is in stark contrast with the hydrogen bonding and charge-charge interactions. Moreover, we find that the position of the cation-π bonds are formed randomly along the polyprotein chains. The propensity of forming long range cation-π interactions increases considerably when increasing the pH from 4 to 8, presumably due to the neutralization of the positive changes of MFP5. Our study directly quantifies the mechanical strength of cation-π bonds in the biological relavent settings and reveals key design parameters that may inspire the design of biomimetic strong underwater adhesives.
Probing the effects of external species on poly(acrylate acid) chain dynamics by using cationic AIE-active fluorophore

Abstract:We report here our results on the investigation of the chain dynamics of poly(acrylic acid) in aqueous solution. The concentration of poly(acrylic acid) was approximately 3.8×10 −4 mol/L, two orders of magnitude higher than that reported in the literature. The pH value of the solution was 3.9, and the hydrogen bonds between the intrinsic and ionized carboxylic acid groups formed dynamic networks, which captured aggregation-induced emission-active molecules (a tetra-quaternary ammonium modified tetraphenylethene derivative) inside the polymer coils and induced fluorescence emission. The hydrogen bonds can be classified as intra- or intermolecular; both can be probed based on the emission change of the tetra-quaternary ammonium modified tetraphenylethene probes. The effects of different external stimuli on the polymer chain dynamics were investigated using different metal cations (including Na + , Li + , Zn 2+ , Ni 2+ , Ca 2+ , and Co 2+ ), different cation concentrations (1×10 −6 to 4×10 −4 mol/L), different poly(acrylic acid) molecular weights (5, 240, and 450 kDa), and different copolymers. The experimental results indicate that the long poly(acrylic acid) chains (high molecular weight) tend to form dense globular coils and exclude the probe molecules outside, which are robust and unsusceptible to water-soluble metal cations. However, the shorter poly(acrylic acid) chains tend to form intermolecular hydrogen bonds, which are helpful in capturing more probe molecules inside the networks, thus inducing stronger emission. Because of the dual functions of forming hydrogen bonds with carboxylic groups and acting as an acceptor of protons from the carboxylic acid group to form cationic species, copolymerization with acrylate amide [poly(acrylic acid)- co -poly(acrylamide)] can greatly affect the chain dynamics of poly(acrylic acid) segments, which is reflected by the drastically decreased emission intensity from the fluorescent probes.
Theoretical and Experimental Adsorption Studies of Polyelectrolytes on an Oppositely Charged Surface

Abstract:Using self-assembly techniques, x-ray reflectivity measurements, and computer simulations, we study the effective interaction between charged polymer rods and surfaces. Long-time Brownian dynamics simulations are used to measure the effective adhesion force acting on the rods in a model consisting of a planar array of uniformly positively charged, stiff rods and a negatively charged planar substrate in the presence of explicit monovalent counterions and added monovalent salt ions in a continuous, isotropic dielectric medium. This electrostatic model predicts an attractive polymer-surface adhesion force that is weakly dependent on the bulk salt concentration and that shows fair agreement with a Debye-Huckel approximation for the macroion interaction at salt concentrations near 0.1 M. Complementary x-ray reflectivity experiments on poly(diallyldimethyl ammonium) chloride (PDDA) monolayer films on the native oxide of silicon show that monolayer structure, electron density, and surface roughness are likewise independent of the bulk ionic strength of the solution.

Abstract:To study the electrostatic interaction between two ionic polymer surface, a polyester film surface was graft-polymerized with a cationic monomer, N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate and an anionic monomer, acrylic acid. When the oppositely charged film pair was brought into contact in the presence of water, they showed strong adhesion instantaneously in water. The adhesion interaction was studied with both shear strength method and atomic force microscopy. The interaction depended on the graft density and the ionic nature of the graft chains. The addition of salt to the medium of the measurement caused a remarkable reduction in the adhesive interaction. These interactions were attributed to the coulombic force between the grafted ionic polymer chains.

Abstract:The advancement of contemporary adhesives is often limited by the balancing act between cohesion and interfacial adhesion strength. This study explores an approach to overcome this trade-off by utilizing the spontaneous polymerization of a protic ionic liquid-based monomer obtained through the neutralization of 2-acrylamide-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid and hydroxylamine. The initiator-free polymerization process is carried out through a gradual increase in monomer concentration in aqueous solutions caused by solvent evaporation upon heating, which results in the in-situ formation of a tough and thin adhesive layer with a highly entangled polymeric network and an intimate interface contact between the adhesive and substrate. The abundance of internal and external non-covalent interactions also contributes to both cohesion and interfacial adhesion. Consequently, the produced protic poly(ionic liquid)s exhibit considerable adhesion strength on a variety of substrates. This method also allows for the creation of advanced adhesive composites with electrical conductivity or visualized sensing functionality by incorporating commercially available fillers into the ionic liquid adhesive. This study provides a strategy for creating high-performance ionic liquid-based adhesives and highlights the importance of in-situ polymerization for constructing adhesive composites.

Abstract:Fluorescent and electron-rich polymer threaded into porous framework provides a scaffold for sensing acceptor molecules through noncovalent interactions. Herein, poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) threaded MIL-101 with confined nanospace was synthesized by vinyl-monomer impregnation, in situ polymerization, and interpenetration. The pore size of the resulted hybrid could be controlled by varying the time of polymerization and interpenetration. The interaction of PVK-threaded MIL-101 with guest molecules showed a charge-transfer progress with an obvious red shift in the optical spectra. Depending on the degree of the interaction, the solution color changed from blue to green or to yellow. In particular, electron-rich PVK-threaded MIL-101 could effectively probe electron-poor nitro compounds, especially 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TNP), a highly explosive material. This sensing approach is a colorimetric methodology, which is very simple and convenient for practical analysis and operation.

Abstract:Anionic polyelectrolytes, such as DNA, are attracted to anionic surfaces in the presence of multivalent cations. A major barrier toward molecular-level understanding of these attractive interactions is the paucity of measurements of the binding strength. Here, atomic force microscopy-based single molecule force spectroscopy was used to quantify the binding free energy of double-stranded DNA to an anionic surface, with complementary density functional theory calculations of the binding energies of metal ion-ligand complexes. The results support both electrostatic attraction and ion-specific binding. Our study suggests that the correlated interactions between counterions are responsible for attraction between DNA and an anionic surface, but the strength of this attraction is modulated by the identity of the metal ion. We propose a mechanism in which the strength of metal-ligand binding, as well as the preference for particular binding sites, influence both the concentration dependence and the strength of the DNA-surface interactions.

Abstract:In a novel application, infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry is used to provide clear evidence for the formation of a covalent bond at a polymer/polymer interface. Specifically, there is evidence for the formation of a Si-O-C bond resulting from a reaction between the silyl (SiH) group of a poly(hydrogen methyl siloxane) crosslinker used in poly(dimethyl siloxane) and the carboxylic acid group of poly(acrylic acid). This covalent bond formation could explain the source of the "lock-up" that is sometimes found between acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives and a silicone-coated release liner.

Effect of Cation–π Interaction on Macroionic Self‐Assembly

Abstract:A series of rod-shaped polyoxometalates (POMs) [Bu4 N]7 [Mo6 O18 NC(CH2 O)3 MnMo6 O18 (OCH2 )3 CNMo6 O18 ] and [Bu4 N]7 [ArNMo6 O17 NC(CH2 O)3 MnMo6 O18 (OCH2 )3 CNMo6 O17 NAr] (Ar=2,6-dimethylphenyl, naphthyl and 1-methylnaphthyl) were chosen to study the effects of cation-π interaction on macroionic self-assembly. Diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY) and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) techniques show that the binding affinity between the POMs and Zn2+ ions is enhanced significantly after grafting aromatic groups onto the clusters, leading to the effective replacement of tetrabutylammonium counterions (TBAs) upon the addition of ZnCl2 . The incorporation of aromatic groups results in the significant contribution of cation-π interaction to the self-assembly, as confirmed by the opposite trend of assembly size vs. ionic strength when compared with those without aromatic groups. The small difference between two aromatic groups toward the Zn2+ ions is amplified after combining with the clusters, which consequently triggers the self-recognition behavior between two highly similar macroanions.

Abstract:Nature uses the power of non-covalent interactions as the basis for many kinds of adhesion phenomena. Inspired by nature, scientists have prepared various synthetic adhesive materials that rely on a number of non-covalent interactions at the interfaces. Commonly used non-covalent interactions include hydrogen bonding, - stacking, charge transfer interactions, electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic interactions, macrocycle-based host-guest interactions, among others. Within this context, macrocycle-based host-guest interactions are of particular interest. Often they give rise to distinct properties, such as multiple combined noncovalent interactions and a diversity of stimuli-based responsiveness. In this tutorial review, we will summarise recent advances in adhesive supramolecular polymeric materials that rely primarily on macrocycle-based host-guest interactions. An overview of future challenges and a perspective of this sub-field are also provided.
Correlations between adhesion and molecular interactions at buried interfaces of model polymer systems and in commercial multilayer barrier films

Abstract:Sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG) was applied to characterize the interfacial adhesion chemistry at several buried polymer interfaces in both model systems and blown multilayer films. Anhydride/acid modified polyolefins are used as tie layers to bond dissimilar polymers in multilayer barrier structures. In these films, the interfacial reactions between the barrier polymers, such as ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) or nylon, and the grafted anhydrides/acids provide covalent linkages that enhance adhesion. However, the bonding strengths vary for different polymer–tie layer combinations. Here, using SFG, we aim to provide a systematic study on four common polymer–tie interfaces, including EVOH/polypropylene–tie, EVOH/polyethylene–tie, nylon/polypropylene–tie, and nylon/polyethylene–tie, to understand how the adhesion chemistry varies and its impact on the measured adhesion. Our SFG studies suggest that adhesion enhancement is driven by a combination of reaction kinetics and the interfacial enrichment of the anhydride/acid, resulting in stronger adhesion in the case of nylon. This observation matches well with the higher adhesion observed in the nylon/tie systems in both lap shear and peel test measurements. In addition, in the polypropylene–tie systems, grafted oligomers due to chain scission may migrate to the interface, affecting the adhesion. These by-products can react or interfere with the barrier–tie chemistry, resulting in reduced adhesion strength in the polypropylene–tie system.

Abstract:The interfacial characterization of aligned carbon nanotube/polyimide nanocomposites. The interaction properties can be significantly improved by using conjugated polymers with aromatic rings for carbon nanotube (CNT)‐reinforced composites. In this study, we investigated the influence of the molecular structure of the polyimide (PI) conjugated polymer on the mechanical properties and interfacial characteristics of CNT/PI composites. To that end, nanocomposites composed of aligned multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and PI with three different molecular structures were examined. Tensile tests, small‐angle x‐ray scattering (SAXS), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were conducted, which revealed significant variations in the tensile properties among the three aligned MWNT/PI nanocomposites. The SAXS analyses indicated that MWNT/BPDA‐PDA had the largest interfacial specific surface area, as corroborated by the MD simulation results, which further demonstrated that the rigidity of the molecular structure influenced the extent of wrapping the PI chains around MWNTs. A highly rigid molecular chain hindered the intrachain folding of the PI chain, facilitating better wrapping of the MWNTs and a larger interfacial area. The MWNTs induced conformational changes in the PI chain owing to π–π stacking. Hermans orientation factor revealed that BPDA‐PDA exhibited the highest degree of orientation with MWNTs, whereas BTDA‐MPD displayed the greatest extent of MWNT‐induced conformational changes. The calculated interaction energy confirmed that MWNT/BTDA‐MPD exhibited the strongest interface strength (−41.50 Kcal/mol/nm2), which was 36.32% and 43.03% higher than that of MWNT/BPDA‐ODA and MWNT/BPDA‐PDA, demonstrating its superior tensile properties. This study provides insights into the interfacial characteristics between conjugated polymers and CNTs, which are essential for designing interfaces and developing high‐performance nanocomposites. Highlights Interfacial interaction between polyimide and aligned carbon nanotubes was investigated. Modulation by polyimide structures on the mechanical property of composite was revealed. The rigidity of the polyimide hinders the folding and facilitates the wrapping. The interfacial interaction induces molecular orientation in polyimide can be observed by molecular dynamic simulation.

Single Molecule Study of Force-Induced Rotation of Carbon-Carbon Double Bonds in Polymers.

Abstract:Carbon-carbon double bonds (C═C) are ubiquitous in natural and synthetic polymers. In bulk studies, due to limited ways to control applied force, they are thought to be mechanically inert and not to contribute to the extensibility of polymers. Here, we report a single molecule force spectroscopy study on a polymer containing C═C bonds using atomic force microscope. Surprisingly, we found that it is possible to directly observe the cis-to-trans isomerization of C═C bonds at the time scale of ∼1 ms at room temperature by applying a tensile force ∼1.7 nN. The reaction proceeds through a diradical intermediate state, as confirmed by both a free radical quenching experiment and quantum chemical modeling. The force-free activation length to convert the cis C═C bonds to the transition state is ∼0.5 Å, indicating that the reaction rate is accelerated by ∼109 times at the transition force. On the basis of the density functional theory optimized structure, we propose that because the pulling direction is not parallel to C═C double bonds in the polymer, stretching the polymer not only provides tension to lower the transition barrier but also provides torsion to facilitate the rotation of cis C═C bonds. This explains the apparently low transition force for such thermally "forbidden" reactions and offers an additional explanation of the "lever-arm effect" of polymer backbones on the activation force for many mechanophores. This work demonstrates the importance of precisely controlling the force direction at the nanoscale to the force-activated reactions and may have many implications on the design of stress-responsive materials.
Like-charge polymer-membrane complexation mediated by multivalent cations: one-loop-dressed strong coupling theory

Abstract:We probe the electrostatic mechanism driving adsorption of polyelectrolytes onto like-charged membranes upon the addition of tri- and tetravalent counterions to a bathing monovalent salt solution. We develop a one-loop-dressed strong coupling theory that treats the monovalent salt at the electrostatic one-loop level and the multivalent counterions within a strong-coupling approach. It is shown that the adhesive force of the multivalent counterions mediating the like-charge adsorption arises from their strong condensation at the charged membrane. The resulting interfacial counterion excess locally maximizes the screening ability of the electrolyte and minimizes the electrostatic polymer grand potential. This translates into an attractive force that pulls the polymer to the similarly charged membrane. We show that the high counterion valency enables this adsorption transition even at weakly charged membranes. Additionally, strongly charged membranes give rise to salt-induced correlations and intensify the interfacial multivalent counterion condensation, strenghtening the complexation of the polymer with the like-charged membrane, as well as triggering the orientational transition of the molecule prior to its adsorption. Finally, our theory provides two additional key features as evidenced by previous adsorption experiments: first, the critical counterion concentration for polymer adsorption decreases with the rise of the counterion valency, and second, the addition of monovalent salt enhances the screening of the membrane charges and suppresses salt correlations. This weakens the interfacial multivalent counterion condensation and results in the desorption of the polymer from the substrate.

Abstract:Eight 6FDA-TFDB polyimide (PI) samples with absolute molecular weights ranging from 1.25 × 105 g·mol−1 to 3.11 × 105 g·mol−1 are obtained by precipitation fractionation. Rheological experiments are conducted to determine the influence of molecular weight on the associating behavior of PI in N,N′-dimethylformamide (DMF) solutions in a broad volume fraction, including abnormal steady shear flow, solution heterogeneity, and scaling behavior. Abnormal flow behaviors, i.e., multi-region shear thinning and weak shear thickening, are studied, and these behaviors have not been reported in literature. The heterogeneity of PI/DMF solutions is examined by dynamic rheological test. By plotting ηsp versus ϕ/ϕη, four concentration regions of I–IV can be distinguished for all PI samples with various molecular weights. The scaling results in different concentration regions are in good agreement with the associative polymer theory proposed by Rubinstein and Semenov. The scaling exponents do not show molecular weight dependence in concentration regions I and II. In concentration regions III and IV, the scaling exponents change little when the molecular weight is below 242 k but increase when the molecular weight increases from 242 k to 311 k. This work can help us to understand polyimide solution properties from dilute to semidilute entangled solutions, and will guide the polyimide solution preparation for different processing.

Abstract:Cation-π interaction is a potent intermolecular interaction between a cation and an aromatic system, which has been viewed as a new kind of binding force, as being compared with the classical interactions (e.g. hydrogen bonding, electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions). Cation-π interactions have been observed in a wide range of biological contexts. In this paper, we present an overview of the typical cation-π interactions in biological systems, the experimental and theoretical investigations on cation-π interactions, as well as the research results on cation-π interactions in our group.
