Abstract:The synthesis of Saturn-type decachlorofullerene C50Cl10 in macroscopic quantities [S. Y. Xie et al., Science 304, 699 (2004)] has successfully captured the D-5h isomer of the labile fullerene C-50 and demonstrated that the equatorial pentagon-pentagon fusions of D-5h C-50 are active sites for chemical reaction. Stimulated by this experiment, we explore the structural, electronic, and spectroscopic properties of other new D5h C,90 derivatives, C50X10 (X = H, F, Br) and C50Cl9R (R = CH3, C6H5, COOH), along its equator. All the calculations were performed at the gradient-corrected and hybrid density-functional theory levels. We characterize the derived structures by computing the IR, Raman, C-13 NMR and UV-visible spectra. We find that tunable optical absorption gaps can be achieved in a wide wavelength range, from the violet to red, by passivating C-50 with H, F, Cl, or Br atoms, and by functionalizing the passivated derivatives with function groups. Our discovery of controllable optical properties of the smaller non-IPR (isolated pentagon rule) fullerene derivatives should lead to potential applications in polymer science, biology, and medicine as single-molecule fluorescent probes, in nanoelectronics as fluorescence-based sensors and switches, and in optoelectronics.
