Abstract:A systematic density functional study has been performed on the structural, electronic and spectroscopic properties of C50X12 (X = H, F, Cl, Br). Nine types of carbon atoms and two kinds of X (X = H, F, Cl, Br) atoms are found in these four C-50 (D-3) derivatives, which are all well distinguished by C-13 NMR spectra signals. C50X12 (X = F, Cl, Br) are predicted to have high adiabatic electron affinity (AEA) values and might serve as good electron-acceptors in photonic/photovoltaic applications. Nucleus-independent chemical shifts (NICS) values at the cage centers of these C-50 (D-3) derivatives, although smaller than that of C-50 (D-3), show that all of the derivatives exhibit aromatic character. Because of the D-3 symmetry, 89 unique vibrational frequencies with E or A(2) symmetry in simulated infrared (IR) spectra and 91 unique vibrational frequencies respect to E or A(1) symmetry modes in simulated Raman spectra are found. Optical excitation and UV-visible spectra of C50X12 (X = F, Cl, Br) are calculated by using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) basing on their optimized ground state structures. Our calculated results show that the optical gaps of these C-50 (D-3) derivatives are tunable, all in the visible region. These C-50 (D-3) derivatives may lead to potential applications in polymer science, nanoelectronics as fluorescence-based sensors and switches, and optoelectronics.
