Based on our scheme, 4 channels of 10 Gb/s WDM signals are used to obtain practical performance evaluation. In the presence of 10-dB gain for signals, the power penalties of 1.35 -dB at the BER of 10 -9 are achieved for DPA in DSF, and as the comparing counterpart of DPA, counter-pumping DRA induce approximately the same level of power penalty (1.55-dB) in DSF and 1.96 -dB in SMF. Co-pumping DRA are also tested in both kind of fibers. Finally, the energy-efficiency issue for different pumping schemes is analyzed.

Abstract:We report, for the first time to our knowledge, an optically powered wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) communication system with distributed parametric amplification in the dispersion-shifted fiber. The parametric pump for the amplification of WDM signals also acts as the power supply for the receiver component. The proposed scheme is also a potential candidate for the "last mile" transmission. Successful musical signal transmission has been demonstrated. Additionally, four channels of 10-Gb/s WDM signals are used to get more precise performance evaluation of the system. The power penalties of less than or equal to 1.35 dB at a bit-error rate of 10(-9) are achieved for all WDM channels in the presence of 10-dB parametric gain.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an O-band single-lane 200 Gb/s intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) transmission system using a low-chirp, broadband, and high-power directly modulated laser (DML). The employed laser is an isolator-free packaged module with over 65-GHz modulation bandwidth enabled by a distributed feedback plus passive waveguide reflection (DFB+R) design. We transmit high baud rate signals over 20-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) without using any optical amplifiers and demodulate them with reasonably low-complexity digital equalizers. We generate and detect up to 170 Gbaud non-return-to-zero on-off-keying (NRZ-OOK), 112 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4), and 100 Gbaud PAM6 in the optical back-to-back configuration. After transmission over the 20-km optical-amplifier-free SSMF link, up to 150 Gbaud NRZ-OOK, 106 Gbaud PAM4, and 80 Gbaud PAM6 signals are successfully received and demodulated, achieving bit error rate (BER) performance below the 6.25%-overhead hard-decision (HD) forward-error-correction code (FEC) limit. The demonstrated results show the possibility of meeting the strict requirements towards the development of 200 Gb/s/lane IM/DD technologies, targeting 800 Gb/s and 1.6 Tb/s LR applications.

Abstract:An optical amplification-free deep reservoir computing (RC)-assisted high-baudrate intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) system is experimentally demonstrated using a 100G externally modulated laser operated in C-band. We transmit 112 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) and 100 Gbaud 6-level PAM (PAM6) signals over a 200-m single-mode fiber (SMF) link without any optical amplification. The decision feedback equalizer (DFE), shallow RC, and deep RC are adopted in the IM/DD system to mitigate impairment and improve transmission performance. Both PAM transmissions over a 200-m SMF with bit error rate (BER) performance below 6.25% overhead hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold are achieved. In addition, the BER of the PAM4 signal is below the KP4-FEC limit after 200-m SMF transmission enabled by the RC schemes. Thanks to the use of a multiple-layer structure, the number of weights in deep RC has been reduced by approximately 50% compared with the shallow RC, whereas the performance is comparable. We believe that the optical amplification-free deep RC-assisted high-baudrate link has a promising application in intra-data center communications.

Abstract:In this paper, we review different designs of distributed Raman amplifiers which have been proposed to minimize the signal power profile asymmetry in mid-link optical phase conjugation systems. We demonstrate how the symmetrical signal power profiles along the fiber can be achieved using various distributed Raman amplification techniques in the single-span and more realistic multi-span circumstances. In addition, we show the theoretically predicted results of the Kerr nonlinear product reduction with different Raman techniques in mid-link optical phase conjugator systems, and then in-line/long-haul transmission performance using numerical simulations.

Abstract:We optimize the novel configuration of a hybrid fiber amplifier - Raman assisted-fiber-based optical parametric amplifier (R-FOPA),in which the parametric gain and Raman gain profiles are combined to achieve a flat composite gain profile. The pump powers and the fiber length in the hybrid amplifier are effectively optimized by genetic algorithm (GA) scheme. The optimization results indicate that the R-FOPA can achieve a 200-nm flat bandwidth spectrum with the gain of 20 dB and ripple of less than 4 dB.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel signal/pump double-pass Raman fiber amplifier using fiber Brag gratings (FBGs). In order to compensate the dispersion slop mismatch among channels in lightwave system, FBGs embedded in different positions along dispersion compensated fiber are used to control the travel length of each WDM signal. Gain equalization can be achieved by optimizing the reflectivity of each FBG. Maximum output power variation among channels is less than +/- 0.5 dB after appropriate optimization. Finally, a wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system using 40-Gb/s x 8 ch non return-to-zero (NRZ) signal transmission in a 100-km transmission fiber is simulated to confirm the system performance. Using proposed dispersion compensation method, it may lead to 2 dB improvement in Q value. Such kind of RFA may find vast applications in WDM system where dispersion management is a crucial issue. Abstract:A novel amplified modulating retro-reflector (AMRR) based on a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) is proposed and a bidirectional free-space optical communication (FSO) system including both downstream and upstream links is experimentally demonstrated with only a single light source using this AMRR. The RSOA-based AMRR can provide a net gain more than 4dB and support the modulation bit rate up to 1.25Gbit/s. The bidirectional FSO transmission performance is evaluated by observing eye diagrams and measuring bit error rate (BER) results of both 10-Gbit/s DPSK downstream and 1.25-Gbit/s OOK upstream signals. The factors that limit the modulation bit rate and transmission quality are analyzed. The power penalties of both links are less than 0.69dB in the bidirectional FSO system at the BER of 1×10-3.

Abstract:We have proposed and demonstrated a novel signal-pump double-pass distributed Raman fiber amplifier (RFA) by using a three-port optical circulator as a reflective mirror. This unique RFA architecture not only doubles the amount of dispersion compensation, but also enhances the pumping efficiency. In comparison with the conventional signal-pump single-pass scheme, the proposed RFA has a 2.0-dB gain improvement and a 3.7-dB equivalent noise figure suppression, measured at 1598 nm. The proposed RFA may find wide applications in long-haul transmission and optical networks, where dispersion compensation is of great concern. Abstract:A simple method is provided for the performance comparison of the Raman-amplified optical-fiber transmission systems. The results show that, compared with conventional hybrid-Raman-amplification systems, the maximum transmission distance can be increased by about 10% and 30% separately, and the input signal power can be decreased by about 6 dB for bidirectional-pumping all-Raman-amplification systems based on uniform or dispersion-managed transmission fibers.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an 80-channel wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission system over a 400 km fiber link. Raman amplification results in a non-flat WDM signal spectrum. Therefore, bit allocation optimization is used to enable different channels to carry different order quadrature amplitude modulation signals according to their optical signal-noise-ratios. A neural network equalizer based on a convolutional neural network (CNN), long short-term memory (LSTM) network, and fully connected (FC) layer structure is adopted in Rx digital signal processing, in which CNN is used for characteristic extraction, LSTM is used for equalization and demodulation, and FC layers are used for output. After transmission, the bit error rate of all channels is below the 25% soft-decision forward error correction threshold, and the line rate reaches 53.76 Tbit/s.

Abstract:The ever-increasing demand for the transmission capacity has stimulated intensive investigations, in terms of both new transmission window of standard single mode fiber (SSMF) and new fiber utilizing the spatial domain. Multi-band wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transmission exploring the extended wavelength band, besides traditional C+L band, is an attractive solution for the rapid and cost-effective enhancement of transmission capacity. To this end, here we demonstrate the U-band WDM transmission over 125-km G.652.D fiber, when the C-band amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source acts as the incoherent pump for Raman amplification (RA). Meanwhile, bidirectional long short-term memory neural network (BiLSTM-NN) is applied to inversely design the spectral shape of two C-band ASE sources. After the optimization through inverse design, the ROP variation at the U-band can be less than 1.2 dB under different net Raman gains. Consequently, we can experimentally achieve a net Raman gain of ∼15 dB over a 3 dB bandwidth of around 2.1 THz at the U-band, under the condition of distributed bidirectional Raman pump configuration. Finally, the performance of the U-band RA is experimentally verified by transmitting three-wavelength 20 GBaud DP-QPSK signals, when the threshold of 7% HD-FEC can be successfully reached.
