Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a new 4-bit/symbol optical data format based on simultaneously modulating dark return-to-zero (DRZ), differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK) and polarization-shift-keying (PoISK) for 100Gbit/s applications. Through numerical simulation, we show the differential tolerance of the three dimension modulation format toward polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) and chromatic dispersion. The receiver sensitivities of three different combined modulation formats, with those of DRZ, DQPSK and PoISK, are compared respectively, while extinction ratio of DRZ is changed. The proposed three dimension orthogonal modulation format has a more compact spectrum and is more tolerant to phase noise compared with DQPSK for 100Gbit/s transmission.

Abstract:A novel staggered differential phase-shift keying (SDPSK) modulation format used for 100 Gbit/s transmission system was proposed. The 2 bit/symbol optical signal could be simply demodulated by using a 1 bit delayed Mach-Zehnder interferometer and a balanced receiver. Compared with the transmission characteristics of the four types of staggered phase modulation formats, such as NRZ-DPSK, RZ-DPSK, NRZ-DQPSK, and RZ-DQPSK formats, it was found that the chromatic and polarization-mode dispersion tolerances of both the SDPSK and DPSK formats with the NRZ and RZ (with 50% duty cycle) shape formats were almost identical, the SDPSK signal could allow larger nonlinear tolerance than the DPSK or DQPSK signal, additionally, the best transmission performance for the RZ-SDPSK signal could be attained if it transmitted through 90 km standard single-mode fiber and 16 km dispersion-compensating fiber, and launched into a third-order Gaussian optical band-pass filter with beyond 125 GHz bandwidth.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the generation of polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) modulated vector signal adopting Mach–Zehnder-modulator-based (MZM-based) optical-carrier-suppression (OCS) intensity modulation and direct detection. The MZM is driven by a 6-GHz precoded vector signal carrying 2-Gbaud QPSK transmitter data, and biased at its minimum transmission point to realize OCS modulation. The phase of the 6-GHz precoded vector signal is 1/2 of that of the regular QPSK symbol. Only one polarization beam splitter (PBS) is needed to implement optical polarization diversity. The bit-error rate (BER) for the 2-Gbaud PDM-QPSK modulated vector signal can reach the hard-decision forward-error-correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8×10−3 after 80-km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) transmission in the presence of optical dispersion compensation, and 80-km SMF-28 transmission causes no power penalty.

Abstract:We experimentally investigate digital intra-channel nonlinear impairment compensation and inter-channel crosstalk suppression for 4 × 160.8-Gb/s wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) polarization division multiplexing quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) transmission over 1300-km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) on a 50-GHz grid with the spectral efficiency of 3.21b/s/Hz, adopting simplified heterodyne coherent detection. By using nonlinear compensation based on DBP with crosstalk suppression based on post filter and maximum likelihood sequence estimation (PF&MLSE), the BER has been improved from 1.0 × 10−3 to 3.5 × 10−4 for 4 × 160.8Gb/s WDM PDM-QPSK with heterodyne detection after 1300km SMF-28 transmission.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a coherent transmission system with a high symbol rate using up to 110-GBaud PDM-QPSK signals. Super-Nyquist-filtering technology is used to narrow down the bandwidth of a single channel on a 100-GHz grid. The performance of the high baud rate electronic time division multiplexed-based super-Nyquist-filtered signal is also studied under the aggressive optical filtering elements in multiple reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs) nodes during transmission. We successfully transmit 100-GHz-grid, 20 channel single-carrier 440-Gb/s super-Nyquist 9-QAM-like signal over 3600-km ultralarge effective-area fiber (ULAF) at a high net SE of 4 b/s/Hz (after excluding the 7% hard-decision FEC overhead). The highly filtering tolerant performance of the 9-QAM liked super-Nyquist signal is also experimentally demonstrated. Using this scheme, we then successfully transmit ten channel 440-Gb/s signal over 3000-km ULAF and ten cascaded 100-GHz-grid ROADMs based on the 110-GBaud QPSK. Such signal is coherently detected and processed after a real-time oscilloscope at 160-GSa/s sampling rate with 65-GHz bandwidth.

Abstract:The authors present 42.7-Gb/s return-to-zero on-off keying pulse-overlapped 1980-km transmission experiments on standard single-mode fiber, which compare the performances of the 33% duty-cycle pi/2 alternate-phase format to the 33% duty-cycle return-to-zero and the 67% duty-cycle carrier-suppressed return-to-zero on-off keying formats. The results show that an effective reduction in nonlinear transmission penalty from intrachannel four-wave mixing can be achieved in systems where strong pulse overlap occurs. Experiments show an increased optimum launch power of 2 dB can be realized with the pi/2 alternate-phase format resulting in a >3 dB improvement in Q as compared to the return-to-zero and carrier-suppressed return-to-zero formats due to a reduction in intrachannel four-wave mixing.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a highly filtering-tolerant multi-modulus equalization (MMEQ) process for very aggressively spectrum-shaped 9-ary quadrature-amplitude-modulation (9-QAM)-like polarization division multiplexing quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) signal to achieve 400-Gb/s wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) channels on the 100-GHz grid for ultra-long-haul reach and high tolerance of the filter narrowing effect caused by reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs). We successfully transmitted 8 channels 480-Gb/s super-Nyquist (channel occupancy much less than signal baud rate) WDM signals at 100-GHz grid over 25 × 200 km conventional single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) with post Raman amplification and 25 ROADMs at a net spectral efficiency (SE) of 4b/s/Hz, after excluding the 20% soft-decision forward-error-correction (FEC) overhead. The system performance is significantly enhanced by the MMEQ based on 9-QAM-like constellations compared to the conventional 4 point QPSK constellation. A record transmission distance over conventional SMF-28 with a large number of ROADMs is firstly reported on the 400-Gb/s channels at 100-GHz grid.

Abstract:A new intersymbol interference (ISI)-free nonlinearity-tolerant frequency domain root M-shaped pulse (RMP) is derived for dispersion unmanaged coherent optical transmission systems. Beginning with the relationship between pulse shaping and intra-channel nonlinearity effects, we derive closed-form expressions for the proposed pulse. Experimental demonstrations reveal that by employing the proposed pulse at a roll-off factor of 1, the maximum transmission reach of a single-channel 56 Gb/s polarization-division-multiplexed quadrature phase-shift keying (PDM-QPSK) system can be extended by 33% and 17%, when compared to systems using a root raised cosine (RRC) pulse and a root optimized pulse (ROP), respectively. For a single-channel 128 Gb/s polarization-division-multiplexed 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (PDM-16QAM) system, the reach can be extended by 44% and 18%, respectively. Reach increases of 30% and 13% are also observed for a dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) 504 Gb/s PDM-QPSK transmission system. The tolerance to narrow filtering effect for the three pulses is experimentally studied as well.

Abstract:For the first time, a long-reach 400G transmission proposal based on quad-carrier PM-QPSK with a net spectral efficiency of 4 b/s/Hz was experimentally demonstrated. Under the assumption of narrowing100-GHz bandwidth after passing through multiple optical nodes, 512-Gb/s quad-carrier PM-QPSK signals were successfully delivered over 2400-km SMF-28 with EDFA-only amplification, and the worst-case BER received at edge channel was small than the soft-decision pre-FEC limit of 2×10-2.

Abstract:In this paper, polarization-insensitive wavelength conversion based on orthogonal-pumps and four-wave mixing in HNLF is experimentally demonstrated for high-speed 112-Gb/s PolMux-RZ-QPSK transmission with digital coherent detection. The conversion performance of the proposed scheme is investigated for both single- and four-channel input signals, with the achieved post-conversion OSNR for the two cases shown to be 30 and 20 dB, respectively. Moreover, it is shown that the OSNR of the converted single-channel signal can be maintained above 25 dB even if the wavelength spacing between the original and converted signals is larger than 25 nm. Finally, the BER of 4x112-Gb/s PolMux-RZQPSK converted signals after 1 km HNLF transmission is measured to be below 1x10(-4). The optimum OSNR and launched HNLF power are also investigated.

Abstract:Employing spectrally efficient PolMux-RZ-8PSK modulation format and single-ended digital coherent detection technique, we demonstrate 8 times 114-Gb/s DWDM transmission over 640 km of SSMF on a 25-GHz grid with record spectral efficiency of 4.2 bit/s/Hz, utilizing no optical dispersion compensation or Raman amplification. We show that the distortion caused by the direct square-law detection of the signal component with single-ended photo detection can be effectively mitigated by a novel DSP algorithm.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel synthesizing method for high-speed 8-ary quadratic-amplitude modulation (QAM) optical signal generation using commercial optical modulators with binary electrical driving signals. Using this method, we successfully generated 114-Gb/s pulse-duration modulation (PDM)-8QAM optical signals. Intradyne detection of PDM-8QAM optical signals with robust blind polarization demultiplexing has been demonstrated by using a new cascaded multimodulus equalization algorithm. With return-to-zero-shaped PDM-8QAM modulation and the proposed blind polarization demultiplexing algorithm, we demonstrate transmission of a record 32-Tb/s fiber capacity (320 × 114 Gb/s) over 580 km of ultralow-loss single-mode fiber-28 fiber by utilizing C+L-band erbium-doped fiber-amplifier-only optical amplification and single-ended coherent detection technique at an information spectral efficiency of 4.0 bit/s·Hz.
