Abstract:The double inverted pendulum is an absolute unstable, high-order, multi-parameter, less-driven and nonlinear system. To stabilize the inverted pendulum, the incremental mathematical model of this system is built based on the Lagrangian mechanics. The discrete-time model predictive control based on the Laguerre series is a new novel control technology, which uses Laguerre series to represent the trace of control signal in the future and optimizes the trace simultaneously. What's more, the technology can bring in the digital integral factor in the control system to improve the ability of anti-interference. So it is applied to stabilize the double inverted pendulum. The simulation experiment shows that the control strategy is effective and practical. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:The inverted pendulum is a mechanical idealization which poses an interesting and difficult problem in control. In this paper, a robust control algorithm based on sliding mode is employed to control: a triple inverted pendulum system with single input. The employment of such a technique appears: necessary because the traditional linear design process cannot incorporate the nonlinear dynamics of such system due to physical limitations. The new controller satisfies the required dynamic characteristics of the triple inverted pendulum system and keeps the system in the sliding mode surface from initial time. Simulation results showed the validity and feasibility of the proposed technique.
A New Robust Adaptive Control of Uncertain Nonlinear Systems and Pendulum Application

Abstract:A new robust adaptive control of uncertain nonlinear systems is proposed in this paper. The proposed method combines sliding mode control with the immersion and invariance (I&I) adaptive scheme, and it has more available degrees of freedom than using the backstepping scheme. Via the proposed method, a class of nonlinear systems with mismatched parametric perturbations can be rendered asymptotically stable and the performance of the system can also be improved. Finally, the proposed method is applied to a simple pendulum with motor dynamics, and simulation results show the effectiveness and performance of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper firstly analyses the physical model of planar single inverted pendulum system, then builds the mathematical model of this system based on Lagrangian mechanics. These characteristics: multi-parameter, less-driven, strong coupling and highly nonlinearity make it difficult to stabilize the planar inverted pendulum system. But nearby the upright equilibrium of this system, the nonlinear mathematical model of the system can be linearized and get decoupled in X-axis and Y-axis. Then two LQR controllers are designed for each linear inverted pendulum in each axis respectively, and they are almost the same. At last, the simulation experiments in MATLAB test and verify the mathematical model is right and the control policy is effective. © 2011 IEEE.

Abstract:This paper introduces an indirect adaptive fuzzy model predictive control strategy for a nonlinear rotational inverted pendulum with model uncertainties. In the first stage, a nonlinear prediction model is provided based on the fuzzy sets, and the model parameters are tuned through the adaption rules. In the second stage, the model predictive controller is designed based on the predicted inputs and outputs of the system. The control objective is to track the desired outputs with minimum error and to maintain closed-loop stability based on the Lyapunov theorem. Combining the adaptive Mamdani fuzzy model with the model predictive control method is proposed for the first time for the nonlinear inverted pendulum. Moreover, the proposed approach considers the disturbances predictions as part of the system inputs which have not been considered in the previous related works. Thus, more accurate predictions resistant to the parameters variations enhance the system performance using the proposed approach. A classical model predictive controller is also applied to the plant, and the results of the proposed strategy are compared with the results from the classical approach. Results proved that the proposed algorithm improves the control performance significantly with guaranteed stability and excellent tracking. Abstract:A double inverted pendulum plant has been in the domain of control researchers as an established model for studies on stability. The stability of such as a system taking the linearized plant dynamics has yielded satisfactory results by many researchers using classical control techniques. The established model that is analyzed as part of this work was tested under the influence of time delay, where the controller was fine tuned using a BAT algorithm taking into considering the fitness function of square of error. This proposed method gave results which were better when compared without time delay wherein the calculated values indicated the issues when incorporating time delay.

Abstract:The inverted pendulum is controlled in this article by using the nonlinear control theory. From classical analytical mechanics, its substructure equation of motion is derived. Because of the inclusion of the restoring forces, the Taylor expansion is employed to facilitate the analysis. An estimated satisfactory periodic solution is obtained with the aid of the modified Homotopy perturbation method. A numerical technique based on the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method is employed to justify the previous solution. On the other hand, a positive position feedback control is developed to dampen the vibrations of an IP system subjected to multi-excitation forces. The multiple time scale perturbation technique of the second order is introduced as a mathematical method to solve a two-degree-of-freedom system that simulates the IP with the PPF at primary and 1:1 internal resonance. The stability of these solutions is checked with the aid of the Routh-Hurwitz criterion. A set of graphs, based on the frequency response equations resulting from the MSPT method, is incorporated. Additionally, a numerical simulation is set up with RK-4 to confirm the overall controlled performance of the studied model. The quality of the solution is confirmed by the match between the approximate solution and the numerical simulation. Numerous other nonlinear systems can be controlled using the provided control method. Illustrations are offered that pertain to implications in design and pedagogy. The linearized stability of IP near the fixed points as well as the phase portraits is depicted for the autonomous and non-autonomous cases. Because of the static stability of the IP, it is found that its instability can be suppressed by the increase of both the generalized force as well as the torsional constant stiffness of the spring. Additionally, the presence of the magnetic field enhances the stability of IP.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, two mathematical models of the primary inverted pendulum are established based on the Simulink and the Simscape toolboxes of the MATLAB respectively. The inverted pendulum changes from the unstable state to the stable state after performing the state feedback control and the PID control method. Under these two control methods, the overshoot of the Simulink model is 57% and 80% smaller, and the adjustment time is 25% and 20% larger than that of the Simscape model. The control effect of the PID method in the two models is better than that of the state feedback method. The adjustment time of the pendulum rod is 40% and 37.5% smaller, and the overshoot is 82% and 61% smaller than that of state feedback control, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, angular control of the pendulum and position control of the cart for an inverted pendulum are considered, and the design of its four typical controllers are introduced by using PID control, fuzzy control, state feedback control and TC control. Simulation results and Monte-Carlo experiments show that the four controllers have good performance and robustness when the initial angle is 0.3 radians.

Abstract:Control of an inverted pendulum is a classical example of the stabilisation problem pertaining to systems that are unstable by nature. The reaction wheel and the motor act as actuators, generating the torque needed to stabilise the system and counteract inevitable disturbances. This paper begins by describing the design and physical implementation of a wheel-based inverted pendulum. Subsequently, the process of designing and testing the proportional–integral–derivative (PID) and unknown input Kalman-filter-based linear quadratic regulator (LQR) controllers is performed. In particular, the design and pre-validation were carried out in the Matlab/Simulink environment. The final validation step was realised using a constructed physical pendulum, with a digital controller implemented using the STM32 board. Finally, a set of various physical disturbances were introduced to the system to show the high reliability and superiority of the proposed Kalman-filter-based LQR strategy.

Abstract:Measurement and Control, Ahead of Print. A reference model-based backstepping anti-interference control method is proposed, which performs well in the application of Inverted Pendulum system. Firstly, the backstepping controller of the single-stage straight-line inverted pendulum is designed and the reference model of the system is obtained. Input the actual state variables into the reference model. If the single-stage straight-line inverted pendulum is disturbed, it will deviate from the ideal value of the reference model. In order to improve the anti-interference performance of single-stage straight-line inverted pendulum system, the generalized state error is introduced, that is, the error between the output of the reference model and the actual output of the system. Then the controller is designed by Lyapunov stability theory based on generalized state error and backstepping control method. Finally, the reference model-based backstepping anti-interference controller is obtained. MATLAB/Simulation results show that the controller can effectively suppress the influence of external interference on the single-stage straight-line inverted pendulum. It has strong robustness and anti-interference ability.

Abstract:The hardware of an inverted pendulum system was developed with low-cost and high reliability and stability, Meanwhile, a novel expert fuzzy control scheme and the MATLAB-based real-time control approach was proposed. The number of fuzzy control rules was significantly reduced by combining related variables, and the control performance was greatly improved by adopting a suitable rule-base according to the angle of the pole with the vertical. The proposed control scheme was implemented in MATLAB and showed a good performance in the real-time fuzzy control of the developed inverted pendulum.

Abstract:The external disturbances together with endogenous unknown dynamics need to be concerned eternally in control problems. And the inverted pendulum problem is one of the most essential and classical problems in control engineering. In this paper, the cascaded linear Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC) method is proposed to stabilize the pendulum around its unstable equilibrium and track the desired position with disturbance and measurement noise. Simulation results justify the effectiveness and robustness, and offer a better performance against external disturbances in comparison with the common PID & linear quadratic regulator (LQR) method.

Abstract:In this paper, a combination of approximate feedback linearization and sliding mode control approaches is applied to stabilize a class of fourth-order nonlinear systems. In order to improve the performance of the proposed controller, design parameters of the sliding surface are adjusted using the adaptation laws, based on the gradient descent technique. Eventually, a new version of particle swarm optimization is implemented to optimize the control gains with respect to the integral of time-weighted absolute errors as the objective function, and a constraint on the maximum control effort value. The introduced idea is put into practice for the under-actuated inverted pendulum system, and the procedure is described with details step by step. The time responses of cart position, pendulum angle, and control effort of the proposed method is then compared with those of several recently published references so as to evaluate the effectiveness of this scenario.

Abstract:The inverted pendulum is an under-actuated and nonlinear system, which is also unstable. It is a single-input double-output system, where only one output is directly actuated. This paper investigates a single intelligent control system using an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) to stabilize the inverted pendulum system while tracking the desired position. The non-linear inverted pendulum system was modelled and built using MATLAB Simulink. An adaptive neuro-fuzzy logic controller was implemented and its performance was compared with a Sugeno-fuzzy inference system in both simulation and real experiment. The ANFIS controller could reach its desired new destination in 1.5 s and could stabilize the entire system in 2.2 s in the simulation, while in the experiment it took 1.7 s to reach stability. Results from the simulation and experiment showed that ANFIS had better performance compared to the Sugeno-fuzzy controller as it provided faster and smoother response and much less steady-state error.

Abstract:To research the tendencies of immediate change in the scheduled parameters, a linear parameter–varying control strategy is made in real time for lab-based inverted pendulum system. An adjusted and observing virtual instrument is designed in LabVIEW to construct this mechanism. To obtain the transient response data, a step response is transmitted by virtual instrument to the inverted pendulum by which model of inverted pendulum is identified. System model depicts its characteristics, so this model is employed in designing controller. To improve the performance and robustness, linear parameter–varying controller is created to deal with parameter distinctions. Furthermore, the effectiveness of this designed robust controller is checked by integrating on hardware system. The discovered model is checked by evaluating the presented approaches in real time and simulation outcomes with traditional controller as proportional–integral–derivative controller and linear–quadratic regulator.

Abstract:An inverted pendulum is a challenging underactuated system characterized by nonlinear behavior. Defining an effective control strategy for such a system is challenging. This paper presents an overview of the IP control system augmented by a comparative analysis of multiple control strategies. Linear techniques such as linear quadratic regulators (LQR) and progressing to nonlinear methods such as Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and back-stepping (BS), as well as artificial intelligence (AI) methods such as Fuzzy Logic Controllers (FLC) and SMC based Neural Networks (SMCNN). These strategies are studied and analyzed based on multiple parameters. Nonlinear techniques and AI-based approaches play key roles in mitigating IP nonlinearity and stabilizing its unbalanced form. The aforementioned algorithms are simulated and compared by conducting a comprehensive literature study. The results demonstrate that the SMCNN controller outperforms the LQR, SMC, FLC, and BS in terms of settling time, overshoot, and steady-state error. Furthermore, SMCNN exhibit superior performance for IP systems, albeit with a complexity trade-off compared to other techniques. This comparative analysis sheds light on the complexity involved in controlling the IP while also providing insights into the optimal performance achieved by the SMCNN controller and the potential of neural network for inverted pendulum stabilization.

Adaptive Control of an Inverted Pendulum by a Reinforcement Learning-based LQR Method

Abstract:Inverted pendulums constitute one of the popular systems for benchmarking control algorithms. Several methods have been proposed for the control of this system, the majority of which rely on the availability of a mathematical model. However, deriving a mathematical model using physical parameters or system identification techniques requires manual effort. Moreover, the designed controllers may perform poorly if system parameters change. To mitigate these problems, recently, some studies used Reinforcement Learning (RL) based approaches for the control of inverted pendulum systems. Unfortunately, these methods suffer from slow convergence and local minimum problems. Moreover, they may require hyperparameter tuning which complicates the design process significantly. To alleviate these problems, the present study proposes an LQR-based RL method for adaptive balancing control of an inverted pendulum. As shown by numerical experiments, the algorithm stabilizes the system very fast without requiring a mathematical model or extensive hyperparameter tuning. In addition, it can adapt to parametric changes online.
