Abstract:Model-free adaptive controller (MFAC) is a novel data-driven control methodology that relies only on input/output (I/O) measurement data instead of classic mathematical models of actual controlled plants. The single-input single-output (SISO) compact-form MFAC (SISO-CFMFAC) is a promising method for controlling SISO nonlinear time-varying systems. The parameters in SISO-CFMFAC must be carefully tuned before use, as inappropriate parameters may lead to poor control performance. However, up to now, parameter tuning has been a time-consuming and laborious task. In this paper, a new approach called SISO-CFMFAC-LSTM is proposed for parameter self-tuning of SISO-CFMFAC based on long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network. To evaluate the performance of the proposed methodology, qualitative and quantitative comparisons with other existing control algorithms are carried out. Six individual performance indices, namely, the root mean square error (RMSE), the integral absolute error (IAE), the integral time-weighted absolute error (ITAE), the integral absolute variation of the control signal (IAVU), the maximum overshoot (MO), and the imprecise control ratio (ICR), are introduced for quantitative comparison. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed SISO-CFMFAC-LSTM achieves the best performance in all indices, indicating that it is an effective control method for SISO nonlinear time-varying systems.
On Parameter Design for Predictive Control with Adaptive Disturbance Model

Abstract:The step model widely used to estimate the unmeasured output disturbance in MPC at present has limited disturbance rejection performance. Adaptive disturbance model can estimate the disturbance dynamics better and improve the ability of disturbance rejection. Parameter design of the controller has great impact on the control performance. The disturbance rejection strategy of disturbance adaptation predictive control (DMCA) is analyzed in the paper, as well as the effects of controller parameters on system dynamic performance, robustness and disturbance rejection ability. In addition, design methods for parameters such as disturbance prediction horizon, orders of time series model and filter factor for output error are researched and then experience guidelines for the parameter design are summarized. Simulation results show that DMCA can decrease the integral of absolute value of error criterion for the controlled variable by 45% than Dynamic Matrix Control (DMC). The optimization design of controller parameters improves DMCA's ability of predicting and rejecting disturbance further.

Abstract:Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) is a typical and high nonlinear process in process industry .It is difficult to control CSTR process. MPC is an advanced control strategy. But it is hard to tune the MPC parameters. A hybrid algorithm is presented to solve this difficulty and this algorithm is based on the immune clonal selection algorithm and sequential quadratic programming. The framework of tuning parameters based on events trigger is introduced in case of uncertain disturbance. Finally, simulation experiments were done with this algorithm in CSTR .Comparison with the results of set point control proved that the proposed method is more effective than other tuning methods and can be used to control CSTR process.

Abstract:A novel and easy-to-use robust tuning strategy for model predictive control (MPC) is presented. The proposed strategy based on Min-Max algorithm can deal with model uncertainty explicitly; it could design an MPC controller with strong robustness and small over-shooting, owing to the performance index employed in the strategy. Another contribution of the performance index is to avoid large prediction horizon and control horizon being selected to MPC controllers, which can reduce the MPC online computation. The superiority of the proposed robust tuning strategy has been demonstrated by simulation results. © 2006 IEEE.

Abstract:The performance of the PID controller may deteriorate when the operating condition of a process fluctuates. A robust parameter tuning method to improve the PID controller performance under bounded model uncertainty is presented. First an enhanced performance criterion is proposed to reduce the overshoot and large control move. Then the robust tuning problem is formulated as a Min-Max optimization. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is applied to solve the nonlinear, non-differentiable problem. Examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Compared with other PID tuning methods, the result shows that better performance can be achieved with the model parameter fluctuation.

Abstract:Model predictive control (MPC) is known for its good dynamic performance, but the parameter mismatch issue has long been concerned. In order to help evaluating and improving the control performance of MPC, a comprehensive knowledge of the side-effects of a variety of possible parameter mismatches on different MPC types is highly required. In this paper, three main MPC types, i.e. the continuous-control-set MPC (CCS-MPC), the finite-control-set MPC (FCS-MPC), and the generalized predictive control (GPC), are considered for the permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drive. Three types of parameter mismatch are considered, i.e. mismatches of the stator resistance, stator inductance, and permanent magnet flux linkage. Their side-effects, including the steady-state control errors and the stability issues, on all the three MPC types are theoretically analyzed and compared. Simulation results are provided to validate the correctness of the comparison study.

Abstract:Model predictive control arithmetic was used for wind turbine pitch control, whose nonlinear model was identified by support vector regression (SVR). But the model of wind turbine could be changed in fieldwork, so incremental learning algorithm was adopted for SVR online identification. In order to shorten the calculation time of SVR online identification, the improved sequential minimal optimization (SMO) algorithm was used to substitute for the original quadratic programming (QP). And the algorithm was further improved by the elimination of invalid break points and the model's being stored and reused. Because the differential loop was used in the electro-hydraulic proportional pitch-controlled system and the direction of load was changeless, the models of feathering and backpaddling are different. Therefore the two models were switched in the predictive control process. At last two models switched predictive pitch control algorithm based on improved incremental SVR was presented and tested in the pitch-controlled wind turbine semi-physical simulation test-bed. Abstract:To research the tendencies of immediate change in the scheduled parameters, a linear parameter–varying control strategy is made in real time for lab-based inverted pendulum system. An adjusted and observing virtual instrument is designed in LabVIEW to construct this mechanism. To obtain the transient response data, a step response is transmitted by virtual instrument to the inverted pendulum by which model of inverted pendulum is identified. System model depicts its characteristics, so this model is employed in designing controller. To improve the performance and robustness, linear parameter–varying controller is created to deal with parameter distinctions. Furthermore, the effectiveness of this designed robust controller is checked by integrating on hardware system. The discovered model is checked by evaluating the presented approaches in real time and simulation outcomes with traditional controller as proportional–integral–derivative controller and linear–quadratic regulator.

Abstract:In this paper, the model predictive control (MPC) approach is utilized to stabilize the output power of the wind turbines at the region above the rated wind speed. The controller is designed based on two different approaches and results have been compared. First, by putting the advantages of the MPC approach into practice, the optimal output power regulation of the wind turbine is obtained using a control oriented linear parameter varying (LPV) model of the wind turbine. However, this method inherently requires high computational cost and thus powerful hardware and processors. To cope with this limitation, an efficient suboptimal approach is proposed that significantly reduces the online computational complexity of the controller. In this approach, the main part of the controller design procedure is done off-line prior to the closed-loop wind turbine power generation and a set of optimal controllers were designed using the MPC scheme. Then, a convex combination of the calculated controllers is used for online power regulation of the wind turbine. It is noted that the selected wind turbine is a horizontal axis wind turbine operating at various speeds ranging from 10-25 m/s. Finally, using a set of simulation results we investigate the performance of the proposed approach.

Abstract:This paper proposes a nonlinear controller for a quadrotor helicopter, under the control of which the system is globally asymptotically stabilized with good control quality. The proposed controller is synthesized by Command Filtered Backstepping method with a novel parameter scheduling scheme. By scheduling controller parameters within the system-stabilizing region, the convergence speeds of errors in each step are adaptively adjusted based on different flight conditions. Amplitudes of control signals are reduced during fast tracking progress to avoid actuator saturation, which is hardly modeled and may cause instability. The controller also allows more aggressive tuning that achieves better regulation accuracy. The technology to implement the proposed controller is illustrated in detail, and key parameters of quadrotor model and the actuator’s dynamics are identified by experiments. To validate the proposed method, experimental flight tests are conducted under three typical flight conditions. Results comparing to other methods such as PID, sliding mode control and dynamic surface control are demonstrated, showing that the proposed controller is practical to an actual quadrotor system and can achieve good control performance.

Abstract:This study develops a data-driven controller tuning scheme to iteratively achieve the desired objective criterion with significant improvement of the convergence performance. Differing from model-based approaches, the controller is in a linear parameterisation form and the controller parameters are tuned by fully using available collection data to address the practical difficulty in obtaining accurate dynamic model. Specifically, the internal iterative behaviour between the current parameter and the optimal parameter is firstly analysed with mathematic expression. Moreover, a novel iterative law based on the behaviour is proposed, which has the ability to directly seek the global optimal parameter that minimises the objective criterion. Furthermore, an unbiased gradient approximation based on the Toeplitz matrix is developed to simplify the practical implementation. Case studies are conducted by both simulation and experiment, and the results consistently indicate that the proposed tuning scheme not only guarantees the parameter converging to global minimum, but also possesses an excellent convergence rate. The proposed strategy essentially provides a novel data-driven controller tuning method and could be applied to practical applications.
Parameter-Adaptive Approximate MPC: Tuning Neural-Network Controllers without Retraining

Abstract:Model Predictive Control (MPC) is a method to control nonlinear systems with guaranteed stability and constraint satisfaction but suffers from high computation times. Approximate MPC (AMPC) with neural networks (NNs) has emerged to address this limitation, enabling deployment on resource-constrained embedded systems. However, when tuning AMPCs for real-world systems, large datasets need to be regenerated and the NN needs to be retrained at every tuning step. This work introduces a novel, parameter-adaptive AMPC architecture capable of online tuning without recomputing large datasets and retraining. By incorporating local sensitivities of nonlinear programs, the proposed method not only mimics optimal MPC inputs but also adjusts to known changes in physical parameters of the model using linear predictions while still guaranteeing stability. We showcase the effectiveness of parameter-adaptive AMPC by controlling the swing-ups of two different real cartpole systems with a severely resource-constrained microcontroller (MCU). We use the same NN across both system instances that have different parameters. This work not only represents the first experimental demonstration of AMPC for fast-moving systems on low-cost MCUs to the best of our knowledge, but also showcases generalization across system instances and variations through our parameter-adaptation method. Taken together, these contributions represent a marked step toward the practical application of AMPC in real-world systems.

Abstract:Aiming at single input single output system with closed loop feedback control,a novel parameter tuning method of PID controller was proposed. The target equations satisfied with the requirements of control system stability were derived by root locus meth-od using the characteristic equation. Then the parameter calculation formula of PID controller was deduced on the basis of the Lya-punov stability criterion. The analysis and comparison of performance simulation on representative industrial processes were given in detail,such as first-order plus dead-time process and electromechanical control model of DC motor. Simulation results show that pro-posed tuning method is simple and useful,easy to realize,has good tracking performance and robust stability to disturbance. It is ap-propriate not only for processes with time delay,but also for without time delayed models with significant advantages for wide applica-tion prospect. But it should be accomplished with computer technology because of large amount of calculation.

Abstract:Traditional PI controller tuning formulae can not be easily adapted to specific system requirements. This paper presents a parameter tuning and robustness evaluation method for performance-oriented optimal PI controllers. The generalized Hermite-Biehler theorem is used to define the PI controller parameter region which stabilizes a closed-loop system. The genetic algorithm with global searching is used to select optimum parameters from a region based on specified performance criteria. The Monte-Carlo method is used to compare the stability and performance for parameter uncertainties within a bounded range. Simulation results show that the proposed method demonstrates good stability for the specified indices and more robust performance than four other traditional methods for perturbations of the system parameters.

Abstract:Transactions of the Institute of Measurement and Control, Ahead of Print. This paper presents an on-line and real-time controller tuning architecture based on Youla–Kucera controller parameterization. First, a coarse controller is designed to satisfy nominal performance of closed-loop system. Second, Youla parameter is used to construct an on-line and real-time fine tuning mechanism including a group of controller candidates under arbitrary switching strategy. The mechanism can adjust the control performance on-line to achieve the balance between dynamic and steady-state performance without resulting in any closed-loop stability problems.

Abstract:Most research on control of nonlinear systems using backstepping concentrates on construction of feedback controllers to achieve stability and/or steady-state tracking performance. Little research considers systematic methods for tuning nonlinear feedback controllers to guarantee the transient performance. This paper investigates how parameters of a backstepping controller can be determined to achieve the predefined settling time and overshoot, which are basic criteria for the transient performance. First, some modifications are made for the backstepping design method by introducing more parameters so that there are more degrees of freedom for parameter tuning. Second, the pole-placement method is used for the linear part of the closed-loop system corresponding to a backstepping controller. Third, an objective function is defined by summing the square of errors between the corresponding coefficients of the desired and real characteristic polynomials. Fourth, constraints are introduced to guarantee the negative semi-definiteness of the time derivative of the Lyapunov function. Fifth, the controller parameters can be found by minimizing the objective function. Finally, simulation and experimental results show that, compared with the existing method, the proposed method is more effective and efficient for fine tuning backstepping controllers.
