Abstract:There is no assurance that interface states can be found at the boundary separating two materials. While a strong perturbation typically favors wave localization, we show on the contrary that in some two-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) possessing a Dirac-like cone at k = 0 derived from monopole and dipoles excitation, a small perturbation is sufficient to create interface states. The conical dispersion together with the flat band at the zone center generates the existence of gaps in the projected band structure and the existence of single mode interface states inside the projected band gaps stems from the geometric phases of the bulk bands. The underlying physics for the existence of an interface state is related to the sign change of the surface impedance in the gaps above and below the flat band. The established results are applicable for long wavelength regimes where there is only one propagating diffraction order for an interlayer scattering.

Abstract:There is no assurance that interface states can be found at the boundary separating two materials. As a strong perturbation typically favors wave localization, it is natural to expect that an interface state should form more easily in the boundary that represents a strong perturbation. Here, we show on the contrary that in some two dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) with a square lattice possessing Dirac-like cone at k=0, a small perturbation guarantees the existence of interface states. More specifically, we find that single-mode localized states exist in a deterministic manner at an interface formed by two PCs each with system parameters slightly perturbed from the conical dispersion condition. The conical dispersion guarantees the existence of gaps in the projected band structure which allows interface states to form and the assured existence of interface states stems from the geometric phases of the bulk bands.

Abstract:In our previous work, we use accidental degeneracy to realize conical dispersions at Γ point (k = 0) in two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystals (PCs) [1]. The conical dispersion consists of a triply degenerate state with two linear bands touching at the Dirac-like point and an additional flat band intersecting it at the same frequency. If the conical dispersion is derived from monopole and dipole excitations, the system can be described as a zero-refractive-index material with effective permittivity and permeability equal to zero simultaneously at the Dirac-like point frequency. Generally speaking, there is no guarantee that interface states can be found at the boundary of 2D PCs. Recently, we found that if an interface is formed by two semi-infinite PCs with the system parameters slightly perturbed from the condition of conical dispersion formation, there are always interface states [2]. The conical dispersion guarantees the existence of gaps both below and above the Dirac-like point in the projected band structure, a necessary condition for the formation of interface states. Meanwhile, the quasi-longitudinal flat band in the conical dispersion ensures that these two gaps have different signs of surface impedances, which can be obtained by the layer-by-layer multiple scattering theory. Since there is a relationship between the sign of the surface impedance and the geometric phase of the bulk band, the existence of interface states can be also explained by the geometric phases of the bulk bands. The presence of interface states in such systems is verified by the microwave experiment [3].
Coexistence of Pseudospin- and Valley-Hall-like Edge States in a Photonic Crystal with C3v Symmetry

Abstract:We demonstrate the coexistence of pseudospin- and valley-Hall-like edge states in a photonic crystal with C-3v symmetry, which is composed of three interlacing triangular sublattices with the same lattice constants. By tuning the geometry of the sublattices, three complete photonic band gaps with nontrivial topology can be created, one of which is due to the band inversion associated with the pseudospin degree of freedom at the Gamma point and the other two due to the gapping out of Dirac cones associated with the valley degree of freedom at the K, K' points. The system can support triband pseudospin- and valley-momentum locking edge states at properly designed domain-wall interfaces. Furthermore, to demonstrate the novel interplay of the two kinds of edge states in a single configuration, we design a four-channel system, where the unidirectional routing of electromagnetic waves against sharp bends between two routes can be selectively controlled by the pseudospin and valley degrees of freedom. Our work combines the pseudospin and valley degrees of freedom in a single configuration and may provide more flexibility in manipulating electromagnetic waves with promising potential for multiband and multifunctional applications.

Abstract:Dirac cones in photonic systems have many profound applications such as achieving zero-index materials and nontrivial photonic phases. It is shown that double Dirac cones at the zone boundary can be restored by achieving accidental degeneracy between transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes in 2D photonic crystals with anisotropic permittivity. The topological band gap can be obtained by lifting nontrivial double Dirac cones, each of which is formed by two orthogonally polarized linear branches sharing the same mirror parities. Robust transport of gapless and high transmission of gapped edge states are also demonstrated in topological anisotropic photonic crystals, demonstrating that a high transmission flat-top spectrum is observed in various working frequency regions even when the interface is no longer straight. This may pave the way to a paradigm for a bandwidth-controllable robust waveguide in topological photonics.

Abstract:By exploiting the accidental degeneracy of the doubly-degenerate dipolar and quadrupolar modes, we show that a two-dimensional dielectric photonic crystal (PC) can exhibit the double Dirac cone dispersion relation at the Γ point. Using a perturbation method and group theory, we demonstrate that the double cone is composed of two identical and overlapping Dirac cones with predictable linear slopes, and the linearity of the dispersion is guaranteed by the spatial symmetry of the Bloch eigenstates. Numerical simulations including wave-front shaping, unidirectional transmission and perfect tunneling show that the corresponding PC structure can be characterized by a zero effective refractive index.

Abstract:We show how one may obtain conical (Dirac) dispersions in photonic crystals, and in some cases, such conical dispersions can be used to create a metamaterial with an effective zero refractive index. We show specifically that in two-dimensional photonic crystals with C4v symmetry, we can adjust the system parameters to obtain accidental triple degeneracy at Γ point, whose band dispersion comprises two linear bands that generate conical dispersion surfaces and an additional flat band crossing the Dirac-like point. If this triply degenerate state is formed by monopole and dipole excitations, the system can be mapped to an effective medium with permittivity and permeability equal to zero simultaneously, and this system can transport wave as if the refractive index is effectively zero. However, not all the triply degenerate states can be described by monopole and dipole excitations and in those cases, the conical dispersion may not be related to an effective zero refractive index. Using multiple scattering theory, we calculate the Berry phase of the eigenmodes in the Dirac-like cone to be equal to zero for modes in the Dirac-like cone at the zone center, in contrast with the Berry phase of π for Dirac cones at the zone boundary.

Abstract:The exposed surface of a truncated photonic crystal (PC) may or may not carry surface states. Likewise, when two PCs are joined together, there is no assurance that interface states can be found at the boundary. We show, however, that interface states must exist at the boundary between a two-dimensional dielectric PC and its "inverted" partner (the conjugate structure formed by interchanging the high/low dielectric region) as long as a common gap can be found above the lowest band and the crystal structures possess a mirror symmetry on average along the interface direction. The interface states form deterministically as a result of different geometric phases of the bulk bands across the boundary. As the existence is protected by topological principles, the interface state will persist even in the limit of extremely small common gaps. The presence of interface states is demonstrated theoretically for a variety of PCs and also experimentally.

Abstract:Semi-Dirac cones, a type of unique dispersion relation, always exhibit a series of interesting transport properties, such as electromagnetic topological transitions and anisotropic electromagnetic transmission. Recently, dual-band semi-Dirac cones have been found in three-dimensional photonic crystals, presenting great potential in electromagnetic wave regulation. However, to the best of our knowledge, there has been no report on dual-band semi-Dirac cones and their applications in two-dimensional photonic crystals, and most of two-dimensional systems have only realized semi-Dirac cones at a single frequency. Therefore, we are to realize dual-band semi-Dirac cones in two-dimensional photonic crystals. In this work, a type of two-dimensional photonic crystal that comprises a square lattice of elliptical cylinders embedded in air is proposed. By rotating the elliptical cylinders and adjusting their sizes appropriately, accidental degeneracy at two different frequencies is achieved simultaneously in the center of the Brillouin zone. Using \begin{document}${\boldsymbol{k}} \cdot {\boldsymbol{p}}$\end{document} perturbation theory, the dispersion relations near the two degenerate points are proved to be nonlinear in one direction, and linear in other directions. These results indicate that the double accidental degenerate points are two semi-Dirac points with different frequencies, and two different semi-Dirac cones, i.e. dual-band semi-Dirac cones, are realized simultaneously in our designed photonic crystal. More interestingly, the dual-band semi-Dirac cones exhibit opposite linear and nonlinear dispersion relation along the major axis and the minor axis of the ellipse, respectively. And our photonic crystal can be equivalent to an impedance-matched double-zero index material in the direction of linear dispersion and a single-zero index material in the direction of nonlinear dispersion, which is demonstrated by the perfect transmission in the straight waveguide and wavefront shaping capabilities of electromagnetic waves. Based on the different properties of the equivalent zero-refractive-indices near the frequencies of two semi-Dirac point, the designed Y-type waveguide can be used to realize frequency separation by leading out the plane waves of different frequencies along different ports. We believe that our work is meaningful in broadening the exploration of the band structures of two-dimensional photonic crystals and providing greater convenience for regulating electromagnetic waves.

Abstract:The existence of interface states at the boundary of two semi-infinite photonic crystals (PhCs) with different lattice constants are investigated systematically. Compared to the interface states in the two PhCs with the same period, a band folding effect is observed for the interface states inside the common band gap of the two PhCs with different lattice constants. We demonstrate that these interface states can be predicted by the surface impedance of the two PhCs. The dispersion of interface states can be determined by the condition of impedance matching combined with the band folding effect. Moreover, some part of the folded interface states penetrates the region of projected bulk bands, and they usually leak to the bulk and form resonant states. However, the interface state at the Γ point can be perfectly localized and becomes a bound state in the continuum (BIC) due to the symmetry mismatch. These findings may provide a general scheme for designing BICs in the PhC structures based on the interface states.

Abstract:The study of interface/surface states in photonic crystals provides new approaches to control the flow of light. In this work, a new type of interface states in two-dimensional photonic crystals is experimentally realized and characterized. The existence of this type of interface states is solely dependent on the reflection properties of the bulk photonic crystals without any surface/interface decorations. Our experimental results have excellent agreement to numerical simulations and the propagation properties of these measured interface states indicate that this new type of interface states will be a good candidate for future optical waveguiding applications. This type of deterministic interface states also exists at the boundary between a dielectric photonic crystal and its “inverted” partner as long as a common gap can be found above the lowest band, which is also experimentally characterized.

Abstract:Interface states in photonic crystals (PCs) have attracted attention for the special properties, such as high transmission efficiency in bend waveguides, and their generation related to the topological phase. Previous works on interface states in PCs were mainly based on the square lattice, the honeycomb lattice or the triangular lattice, but with different materials, shapes, or sizes of rods resulting in the complicated structure. In this paper, an interface is constructed by two 2D PCs with different rectangular lattices, but the same materials, shapes, and sizes of dielectric rods, which generates interface states. The interface states are analyzed with respect to Zak phases and surface impedances. The retainability of the interface states in rectangular lattice PCs is investigated by studying the relationship between the length-width ratio of the rectangular lattice and the Zak phase. It is found that, when the interface states are generated by changing the length-width ratio of the rectangular lattice, the retainability of the interface states is related to the positions of the photonic bandgaps or the Zak phases of the bands. A more detailed examination indicates that these conclusions are applicable to the rectangular lattice PCs with other materials, shapes, and sizes of dielectric rods. These results can lead to new ways to generate interface states easily, with only one kind of dielectric rod. In addition, these outcomes may contribute to the understanding of the relationship between the geometry and the interface state.

Creating Anisotropic Topological Phases Within Inversely Designed Photonic Crystals

Abstract:Photonic topological insulators endow flexible manipulation of light with high efficiency and robustness. The majority of previous research concentrated on isotropic topological states, with anisotropic topological states receiving less attention. In this study, we investigate anisotropic topological edge states in two-dimensional photonic systems for both the transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) modes. First, using the topology optimization method, photonic crystals (PCs) with maximized odd-order band gaps, from the first-order to the seventh-order, are created. An anisotropic topological phase transition is then obtained by shifting the primitive unit cell (UC) of the optimized PC along the horizontal direction by half of the lattice constant. Tightly localized anisotropic topological edge states are thus formed at the interface between the primitive and trans-lated UCs. Finally, the transmission properties of the anisotropic topological edge states are numerically demonstrated. Our findings could aid in the development of topological photonic devices that offer reliable directional transmissions and radiations.
Inverse Design of Polymorphic Dirac-like Cone Dispersion Relationship in Photonic Crystals

Abstract:Dirac-like cone linear dispersion relations in photonic crystals (PhCs) often endow them with unique properties, yet searching for such relations can be challenging. We introduce a generalized inverse design system that, given the dielectric constants and lattice of two-dimensional PhCs, can efficiently determine its structural parameters to obtain its Dirac-like cone dispersion. Employing this inverse design strategy, we design three types of Dirac cone PhCs, including triple degenerate, quadruple degenerate, and triple degenerate under dual polarization with the same frequency. Further investigations reveal a systematic relationship between the radius of the dielectric rods in these PhCs and their corresponding Dirac frequencies across varying dielectric constants. The zero refractive index characteristic is validated in two of the three PhCs studied, as confirmed through numerical simulations. Additionally, by leveraging our proposed inverse design method, we introduce an innovative shell dielectric rod model, which encapsulates a dielectric material, achieving a quadruple degenerate dispersion structure with dual Dirac cones. This research provides a potent tool for the inverse design of PhCs and expands its application in Dirac cone dispersion design.
DIRAC DISPERSION AND ZERO-INDEX IN TWO DIMENSIONAL AND THREE DIMENSIONAL PHOTONIC AND PHONONIC SYSTEMS

Abstract:We show that by applying accidental degeneracy, we can obtain a triply-degenerate state at the zone center in the band diagram of two dimensional (2D) photonic crystal. The dispersion near the zone center comprises two linear bands and an additional ∞at band crossing at the same frequency. If this triply-degenerate state is formed by the degeneracy of monopole and dipole excitations, we show that the system can be mapped to an efiective medium with permittivity and permeability equal to zero. While \Dirac cone dispersions can only be meaningfully deflned in 2D systems, the notion of a Dirac point can be extended to three dimensional (3D) classical wave systems. We show that a simple cubic photonic crystal composed of core-shell spheres exhibits a 3D Dirac-like point at the center of the Brillouin zone at a flnite frequency. Using efiective medium theory, we can map our structure to an isotropic zero refractive index material in which the efiective permittivity and permeability are simultaneously zero at the Dirac-like point frequency (!D). The Dirac-like point is six-fold degenerate and is formed by the accidental degeneracy of electric dipole and magnetic dipole excitations, each with three degrees of freedom. We found that 3D Dirac-like points at ~ = 0 can also be found in simple cubic acoustic wave crystals. Difierent from the case in the photonic system, the 3D Dirac-like point in acoustic wave system is four-fold degenerate, and is formed by the accidental degeneracy of dipole and monopole excitations. Using efiective medium theory, this acoustic wave system can also be described as a material which has both efiective mass density and reciprocal of bulk modulus equal to zero at !D. Abstract:Dirac cones and Dirac points are found at the K (K') points in the Brillouin zones of electronic and classical waves systems with hexagonal or triangular lattices. Accompanying the conical dispersions, there are many intriguing phenomena including quantum Hall effect, Zitterbewegung and Klein tunneling. Such Dirac cones at the Brillouin zone boundary are the consequences of the lattice symmetry and time reversal symmetry. Conical dispersions are difficult to form in the zone center because of time reversal symmetry, which generally requires the band dispersions to be quadratic at k = 0. However, the conical dispersions with a triply degenerate state at k = 0 can be realized in two dimensional (2D) photonic crystal (PC) using accidental degeneracy. The triply degenerate state consists of two linear bands that generate Dirac cones and an additional flat band intersecting at the Dirac point. If the triply degenerate state is derived from the monopolar and dipolar excitations, effective medium theory can relate this 2D PC to a double zero-refractive-index material with effective permittivity and permeability equal to zero simultaneously. There is hence a subtle relationship between two seemingly unrelated concepts: Dirac-like cone and zero-refractive index. The all-dielectric "double zero"-refractive-index material has advantage over metallic zero-index metamaterials which are usually poorly impedance matched to the background and are lossy in high frequencies. The Dirac-like cone zero-index materials have impedances that can tune to match the background material and the loss is small as the system has an all-dielectric construction, enabling the possibility of realizing zero refractive index in optical frequencies. The realization of Dirac-like cones at k = 0 can be extended from the electromagnetic wave system to acoustic and elastic wave systems and effective medium theory can also be applied to relate these systems to zero-index materials. The concept of Dirac/Dirac-like cone is intrinsically 2D. However, using accidental degeneracy and special symmetries, the concept of Dirac-like point can be extended from two to three dimensions in electromagnetic and acoustic waves. Effective medium theory is also applicable to these systems, and these systems can be related to isotropic media with effectively zero refractive indices. One interesting implication of Dirac-like cones in 2D PC is the existence of robust interface states. The existence of interface states is not a trivial problem and there is usually no assurance that localized state can be found at the boundary of photonic or phononic crystal. In order to create an interface state, one usually needs to decorate the interface with strong perturbations. Recently, it is found that interface state can always be found at the boundary separating two semi-infinite PCs which have their system parameters slightly perturbed from the Dirac-like cone formation condition. The assured existence of interface states in such a system can be explained by the sign of the surface impedance of the PCs on either side of the boundary which can be derived using a layer-by-layer multiple scattering theory. In a deeper level, the existence of the interface state can be accounted for by the geometric properties of the bulk band. It turns out that the geometric phases of the bulk band determine the surface impedance within the frequency range of the band gap.The geometric property of the momentum space can hence be used to explain the existence of interface states in real space through a bulk-interface correspondence.

Abstract:This study reports a modified Haldane model that supports transitions between valley and Chern topological phases in photonic crystals. Berry curvatures of this system can be flexibly diffused, converged, or flipped by endowing different model parameters, thus exhibiting exotic topological interface/edge behaviors, such as topological bound states with ideally zero dispersion. Importantly, the coexistence of chiral and antichiral edge states preserved simultaneously by valley and Chern topological phases is achieved by splicing together two kinds of topological structures as an entirety. It further employs a honeycomb lattice comprising gyromagnetic and ceramic cylinders at microwave frequencies, where inversion and time-reversal symmetries can be flexibly manipulated. Topological interface transport is demonstrated, including two opposite signs of group velocities jointly protected by topologically distinct regimes. These results bridge the gap between valley and Chern topological physics and shed light on developing reconfigurable integrated device applications for classical (quantum) information processing and photonic computing. The coexistence of chiral and antichiral edge states is proposed for photonic crystals by a modified Haldane model. Dirac cones induced by accidental degeneracy in photonic crystals and zero-refractive-index materials

Abstract:A zero-refractive-index metamaterial is one in which waves do not experience any spatial phase change, and such a peculiar material has many interesting wave-manipulating properties. These materials can in principle be realized using man-made composites comprising metallic resonators or chiral inclusions, but metallic components have losses that compromise functionality at high frequencies. It would be highly desirable if we could achieve a zero refractive index using dielectrics alone. Here, we show that by employing accidental degeneracy, dielectric photonic crystals can be designed and fabricated that exhibit Dirac cone dispersion at the centre of the Brillouin zone at a finite frequency. In addition to many interesting properties intrinsic to a Dirac cone dispersion, we can use effective medium theory to relate the photonic crystal to a material with effectively zero permittivity and permeability. We then numerically and experimentally demonstrate in the microwave regime that such dielectric photonic crystals with reasonable dielectric constants manipulate waves as if they had near-zero refractive indices at and near the Dirac point frequency.

Abstract:By using the \vec{k}\cdot\vec{p} method, we propose a first-principles theory to study the linear dispersions in phononic and photonic crystals. The theory reveals that only those linear dispersions created by doubly-degenerate states can be described by a reduced Hamiltonian that can be mapped into the Dirac Hamiltonian and possess a Berry phase of -\pi. Triply-degenerate states can also generate Dirac-like cone dispersions, but the wavefunctions transform like a spin-1 particle and the Berry phase is zero. Our theory is capable of predicting accurately the linear slopes of Dirac/Dirac-like cones at various symmetry points in a Brilliouin zone, independent of frequency and lattice structure.
