Abstract:In this article, a highly directive all-dielectric zero-index metamaterial (ZIM) based nanoantenna has been proposed which has the ability to directionally transmit the radiation from an isotropic quantum emitter. The zero-index metamaterial (ZIM) used here, is basically a rods-in-air type photonic crystal, which exhibits zero-index behaviour owing to the existence of a Dirac-cone at the Gamma (Γ) point in its photonic band structure. The emitter is embedded inside the ZIM and the radiation pattern can be controlled by varying the shape and size of the array.

Abstract:Metamaterials offer unprecedented flexibility for manipulating the optical properties of matter, including the ability to access negative index, ultra-high index and chiral optical properties. Recently, metamaterials with near-zero refractive index have drawn much attention. Light inside such materials experiences no spatial phase change and extremely large phase velocity, properties that can be applied for realizing directional emission, tunneling waveguides, large area single mode devices, and electromagnetic cloaks. However, at optical frequencies previously demonstrated zero- or negative-refractive index metamaterials require the use of metallic inclusions, leading to large ohmic loss, a serious impediment to device applications. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an impedance matched zero-index metamaterial at optical frequencies based on purely dielectric constituents. Formed from stacked silicon rod unit cells, the metamaterial possesses a nearly isotropic low-index response leading to angular selectivity of transmission and directive emission from quantum dots placed within the material.

Abstract:In this paper, a planar zero-index metamaterial, which can be easily fabricated, was designed. Both the simulation and experimental results show that a zero index of refraction occurred at 8.75 GHz. The zero index of refraction can be used to enhance the directivity of antennas. We used a dipole antenna embedded in this metamaterial and found that the directivity of the antenna was effectively enhanced compared with the case without this metamaterial.

Abstract:In this article, the highly directive emission based on a new type of metamaterial has been demonstrated. A structure of crossed metallic strips with slots is designed. By embedding the source, inside a slab of such material, the emitted energy is concentrated around the normal of the slab based on the zero refraction principle. An antenna is constructed, and the simulation has been done on it. The results show that highly directive property is achieved. Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate highly directive emission based on anisotropic metamaterials with spatial dispersion of very narrow hyperbola. By embedding the source inside a slab of such material, the emitted energy, both inside and outside the material, is concentrated around the normal of the slab, and a perfect far-field radiation is thus achieved. This effect is verified experimentally in the microwave domain, and a directivity that is far larger than the best one to our knowledge is obtained from the constructed antenna.

Abstract:Zero-index material is a typical metamaterial with an effective zero refractive index, possessing a variety of exotic electromagnetic properties and particular functionalities. We have considered two kinds of zero-index materials with the first one a nearly matched zero index made of magnetic metamaterial and the second one a radially anisotropic zero index. The magnetic metamaterial-based systems are shown to be significant in wavefront engineering and flexibly tunable by an external magnetic field and a temperature field. The radially anisotropic zero-index-based systems can remarkably enhance the omnidirectional isotropic radiation by enclosing a line source and a dielectric particle within a shell configuration. The physical origin lies in that the dielectric particle effectively rescatters the trapped anisotropic higher order modes and converts them into the isotropic 0th order mode radiated outside the system. The case for the system with the loss is then examined and the energy compensation with a gain particle is also demonstrated.

Abstract:Metamaterials with a refractive index of zero exhibit physical properties such as infinite phase velocity and wavelength. However, there is no way to implement these materials on a photonic chip, restricting the investigation and application of zero-index phenomena to simple shapes and small scales. We designed and fabricated an on-chip integrated metamaterial with a refractive index of zero in the optical regime. Light refracts perpendicular to the facets of a prism made of this metamaterial, directly demonstrating that the index of refraction is zero. The metamaterial consists of low-aspect-ratio silicon pillar arrays embedded in a polymer matrix and clad by gold films. This structure can be fabricated using standard planar processes over a large area in arbitrary shapes and can efficiently couple to photonic integrated circuits and other optical elements. This novel on-chip metamaterial platform opens the door to exploring the physics of zero index and its applications in integrated optics.

Abstract:Metamaterials with a Dirac-like cone dispersion at the center of the Brillouin zone behave like an isotropic and impedance-matched zero refractive index material at the Dirac-point frequency. Such metamaterials can be realized in the form of either bulk metamaterials with efficient coupling to free-space light or on-chip metamaterials that are efficiently coupled to integrated photonic circuits. These materials enable the interactions of a spatially uniform electromagnetic mode with matter over a large area in arbitrary shapes. This unique optical property paves the way for many applications, including arbitrarily shaped high-transmission waveguides, nonlinear enhancement, and phase mismatch-free nonlinear signal generation, and collective emission of many emitters. This review summarizes the Dirac-like cone-based zero-index metamaterials’ fundamental physics, design, experimental realizations, and potential applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we achieve highly directive emission based on left-handed metamaterial. By employing the anisotropic characteristics, the electromagnetic (EM) wave propagates along only one direction inside the medium and has a quasi-plane phase front; the electromagnetic (EM) waves emitted from the medium would behave high directional. Abstract:We use experiment and theory to demonstrate a new mechanism for directive emissions, which involves a double-plate resonance cavity made with metamaterials. In contrast to other mechanisms employing Fabry-Perot cavities, photonic crystals or zero index materials, our system is significantly thinner than the working wavelength and requires a smaller lateral size. We show the physics to be governed by subwavelength resonance modes unique to such metamaterials-based cavities.

Abstract:Zero-index (ZI) materials are synthetic optical materials with vanishing effective permittivity and/or permeability at a given design frequency. Recently, it has been shown that the permeability of a zero-index host material can be deterministically tuned by adding photonic dopants. Here, we apply metal-induced crystallization (MIC) in quasi-random metal-semiconductor composites to fabricate large-area zero-index materials. Using Ag-Si as a model systems, we demonstrate that the localized crystallization of the semiconductor at the metal/semiconductor interface can be used as design parameter to control light interaction in such a disordered system. The induced crystallization generates new zero-index states corresponding to a hybridized plasmonic mode emerging from selective coupling of light to the ångström-sized crystalline shell of the semiconductor. Photonic doping can be used to enhance the transmission in these disordered metamaterials as is shown by simulation. Our results break ground for novel large-area zero-index materials for wafer scale applications and beyond.

Abstract:Zero-index materials exhibit exotic optical properties that can be utilized for integrated-optics applications. However, practical implementation requires compatibility with complementary metallic-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technologies. We demonstrate a CMOS-compatible zero-index metamaterial consisting of a square array of air holes in a 220-nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer. This design supports zero-index modes with Dirac-cone dispersion. The metamaterial is entirely composed of silicon and offers compatibility through low-aspect-ratio structures that can be simply fabricated in a standard device layer. This platform enables mass adoption and exploration of zero-index-based photonic devices at low cost and high fidelity.

Abstract:Zero-index metamaterials (ZIMs) offer unprecedented ways to manipulate the flow of light, and are of interest for wide range of applications including optical cloaking, super-coupling, and unconventional phase-matching properties in nonlinear optics. Impedance-matched ZIMs can be obtained through a photonic Dirac-cone (PDC) dispersion induced by an accidental degeneracy of an electric monopole and a transverse magnetic dipole mode at the center of the Brillouin zone. Therefore, PDC is very sensitive to fabrication imperfections. In this work, we propose and demonstrate fabrication-tolerant all-dielectric ZIM in telecom regime that supports near PDC dispersion over much wider parameter space than conventional designs. The prism device integrated with Si photonics is fabricated and measured for the verification.

Abstract:Resonant enhancement of electromagnetic waves propagating at oblique incidence in metamaterials, with dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability linearly changing from positive to negative values, has been predicted and theoretically studied. This effect occurs for both TE and TM polarizations near the point where a refractive index changes its sign. Our model elucidates the unique features of the resonant enhancement in "positive-to-negative transition" metamaterials for a broad frequency range from microwaves to optics.

Abstract:We propose a scheme which can generate a highly directional single photon with almost 100% efficiency. Therefore we can get a useful single photon when it is required. An initial excited atom is placed inside a special Fabry-Perot cavity whose walls consist of left-handed and zero-index metamaterials. The left-handed slabs work as a closed shell to avoid dissipation of the emitted photon, while the outer zero-index metamaterial slabs act as a special shutter which is transparent only for normal incidence, so that the photon emitted by the atom can only escape out of the cavity unidirectionally. Furthermore, we design the cavity with currently available metamaterials made of two-dimensional dielectric photonic crystals, and simulate the radiative field of an electric dipole to confirm our prediction. Differently from the previous proposal of single-photon sources which demanded complicated structure design and subtle mode analysis, our scheme is simple and robust for atomic position. This work has promising applications for quantum communication and optical quantum computing.
