Abstract:Summary form only given. Tapered nanofibers are fibers that are stretched until their diameter becomes comparable to the optical wavelength. As the length of such nanofibers can reach tens of centimeters, the guided mode that presents a strong evanescent field can be used to efficiently excite “evanescent nonlinearities” in the medium surrounding the nanofiber. This evanescent field was already used in many applications, for instance to probe the atomic fluorescence of gases, and also for spectroscopic measurements. However, to our knowledge, this field has never been used to perform optical nonlinearities, the so-called “evanescent nonlinearities”, except in two very recent communications . In this work, we present the demonstration of stimulated Raman scattering in the evanescent field of a nanofiber immersed in ethanol. The nanofiber was drawn from a telecom fiber with a home-made pulling platform. The targeted diameter and length are respectively 440 nm and 6 cm. The pump source was a frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser emitting pulses at 532 nm whose full width at half maximum is 510 ps. We observed the first Stokes of ethanol at 630 nm (see fig. below). The conversion efficiency is about 40 % for an input pump energy of 0.24 μJ. This first experimental demonstration of stimulated Raman scattering in the evanescent field of a nanofiber immersed in a liquid opens the way to the study of a new kind of experiments and components, thanks to the various materials that can form or surround the nanofiber and the feasibility of nanosystems such as nanoloops or nanoresonators.

Abstract:Nanofibres can be produced with diameters smaller than the wavelength of the light they guide. In this regime, the guided mode presents a strong evanescent field well adapted to the excitation of “evanescent nonlinearities”. We theoretically investigate such an evanescent nonlinearity: the Raman interaction between the evanescent field and a liquid surrounding the nanofibre. Our calculations demonstrate that the Raman conversion is obtained with nanofibre lengths an order of magnitude lower than those required for liquid core photonic crystal fibres.

Abstract:We study the spontaneous Raman scattering (RS) in taper-drawn micro/nano-fibers (MNFs) by employing the photon counting technique. The spectra of RS in five MNFs, which are fabricated by using different heating flames (hydrogen flame or butane flame) and with different diameters, are measured within a frequency shift range of 1435 cm(-1)-3200 cm(-1). From the measured spectra, we observe the RS peaks originated from silica and a unique RS peak with a frequency shift of similar to 2905 cm(-1) (similar to 87.2 THz). Unlike the former ones, the latter one is not observable in conventional optical fibers. Furthermore, the unique peak becomes obvious and starts to rapidly increase with the decrease of the diameter of MNFs when the diameter is smaller than 2 mu m, and the intensity of the unique peak significantly depends on the heating flame used in the fabricating process. Our investigation is useful for the entanglement generation or optical sensing using taper-drawn MNFs.

Abstract:In recent years, tapered optical fibers (TOFs) have attracted increasing interest and developed into a range of devices used in many practical applications ranging from optical communication, sensing to optical manipulation and high-Q resonators. Compared with conventional optical fibers, TOFs possess a range of unique features, such as large evanescent field, strong optical confinement, mechanical flexibility and compactness. In this review, we critically summarize the multimode interference in TOFs and some of its applications with a focus on our research project undertaken at the Optoelectronics Research Centre of the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom.

Abstract:As a novel sensing technology,tapered optical fiber sensing technology has attracted much more attention due to its advantages in many sensing related applications,such as sensing in electricity,petrochemical industry,biochemistry,aerospace,environmental protection and national defense.Compared with the conventional optical fiber based sensors,tapered optical fiber sensing devices offer a number of outstanding optical properties,including fast response,scale in micro/nano meters,strong confinement,large evanescent field and high sensitivity.In this chapter the following parts are presented:1) the principles,fabrication process,refractive index and temperature sensing characteristics based on microfiber coupler sensors were reviewed;2) the sensing principles of singlemode-multimode-singlemode (SMS) fiber structure and singlemode-tapered multimode-singlemode (STMS) fiber structure were discussed and their applications on refractive index and temperature sensing were presented;3) a multimode interference halftapered optical fiber probe based sensors were demonstrated for temperature and refractive index sensing;4) Finally tapered optical fiber based devices can also be used for optical telecommunications and micromanipulation applications.

Abstract:The generation of unwanted higher-order Raman effects is the main factor restricting the power scaling of Raman fiber amplifiers (RFAs). This phenomenon arises from an interplay of physical processes, including stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), four-wave mixing (FWM), and the intricate temporal and spectral dynamics. Tapered fibers have demonstrated excellent nonlinear effects suppression characteristics due to the varying core diameter along the fiber, which is widely used in ytterbium-doped fiber lasers. In this paper, a comprehensive numerical investigation is conducted on the core-pumping tapered fiber RFAs considering Raman-assisted FWM. The higher-order Raman power in the tapered fiber is always kept at a low level, showing a weak Raman-assisted FWM effect. A numerical investigation is conducted to study the impact of the tapering ratio, the lengths of the thin part, tapered region, and thick part on the higher-order Raman threshold of RFAs. Furthermore, the impact of phase mismatch variations caused by changes in the seed wavelength, on the output signal power and nonlinear effects is analyzed. This paper presents, for the first time, a study on core-pumped RFAs using tapered fibers, providing a novel perspective on enhancing the power of RFAs.

Abstract:The guiding modes of a single mode fiber(@1550nm),when the cutoff frequency of the fiber is less than the frequency of the launching field,have been investigated.The fused tapered fiber has been fabricated by using the flame of a spirit lamp.If controlling the fiber dimension well during pulling process,the unique tapered fiber will have a multimode input end and a single mode output end for launching wavelength 632.8nm,which are demonstrated in our experiment.

Abstract:A ytterbium-doped large-mode-area step-index fiber perform was fabricated by chelate precursor doping technique. For the purpose of raising the threshold of nonlinear effects and transverse mode instability simultaneously, a long tapered fiber was drew by changing the perform drawing speed. The core/cladding diameter of this tapered fiber was varied from 10/155 to 26/400 μm in 18m-long with the tapering ratio of 2.6. Using this fiber as a gain medium for a fiber laser in amplifier, the beam quality factor M2 was ~1.2 when the output power obtained over 1.2kW with slope efficiency of 74.5%. The laser output spectrum was centered at 1063.8nm with narrow 3dB bandwidth of 0.26nm. The stimulated Raman scattering suppression ratio was about ~34.7dB.

Abstract:For many nonlinear optical process, it is desirable to maximize the product of the intensity and the interaction length. In this paper, very long subwavelength-diameter optical fibers with low optical loss about 0.1 dB cm(-1) were fabricated with a new drawing process by heating the standard single mode fiber with a designed electric strip heater. Pumping the taper fibers with 532 nm mode- locked peco-second laser, we observed exclusive SRS phenomena appeared in these fibers with low pump power and fiber length.

Abstract:A sensitivity-enhanced fiber-optic refractive index (RI) sensor based on a tapered single-mode thin-core diameter fiber is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The sensor head is formed by splicing a section of tapered thin-core diameter fiber (TCF) between two sections of single-mode fibers (SMFs). The cladding modes are excited at the first SMF-TCF interface, and then interfere with the core mode at the second interface, thus forming an inter-modal interferometer (IMI). An abrupt taper (tens of micrometers long) made by the electric-arc-heating method is utilized, and plays an important role in improving sensing sensitivity. The whole manufacture process only involves fiber splicing and tapering, and all the fabrication process can be achieved by a commercial fiber fusion splicer. Using glycerol and water mixture solution as an example, the experimental results show that the refractive index sensitivity is measured to be 0.591 nm for 1% change of surrounding RI. The proposed sensor structure features simple structure, low cost, easy fabrication, and high sensitivity.

Abstract:We have developed a novel integrated platform for liquid photonics based on liquid core optical fiber (LCOF). The platform is created by fusion splicing liquid core optical fiber to standard single-mode optical fiber making it fully integrated and practical - a major challenge that has greatly hindered progress in liquid-photonic applications. As an example, we report here the realization of ultralow threshold Raman generation using an integrated CS2 filled LCOF pumped with sub-nanosecond pulses at 1064nm and 532nm. The measured energy threshold for the Stokes generation is ~ 1nJ, about three orders of magnitude lower than previously reported values in the literature for hydrogen gas. The integrated LCOF platform opens up new possibilities for ultralow power nonlinear optics such as efficient white light generation for displays, mid-IR generation, slow light generation, parametric amplification, all-optical switching and wavelength conversion using liquids that have orders of magnitude larger optical nonlinearities compared with silica glass.

Abstract:A method to fabricate all-in-fiber liquid microcells has been demonstrated which allows for the incorporation of complex hollow-core photonic crystal fibers (HCPCFs). The approach is based on a mechanical splicing method in which the hollow-core fibers are pigtailed with telecoms fibers to yield devices that have low insertion losses, are highly compact, and do not suffer from evaporation of the core material. To isolate the PCF cores for the infiltration of low index liquids, a pulsed CO2 laser cleaving technique has been developed which seals only the very ends of the cladding holes, thus minimizing degradation of the guiding properties at the coupling region. The efficiency of this integration method has been verified via strong cascaded Raman scattering in both toluene (high index) core capillaries and ethanol (low index) core HCPCFs, for power thresholds up to six orders of magnitude lower than previous results. We anticipate that this stable, robust all-fiber integration approach will open up new possibilities for the exploration of optofluidic interactions.

Abstract:A novel tapered two-mode fiber embedded long-period fiber grating (TTMF-LPFG) sensor is proposed. The long-period fiber grating (LPFG) is fabricated by periodically splicing the two-mode fiber (TMF) and single-mode fiber (SMF), and then the LPFG is tapered to make a refractive index (RI) sensor. By comparing the sensors with different waist diameters, we found that the smaller the diameter of the sensor is, the higher the sensitivity is. When the taper waist diameter is 36 , the maximum sensitivity reaches 1360.43 nm/RIU. TTMF-LPFG shows low sensitivity to the temperature, avoiding the influence of temperature. For the traditional taper fiber, a very thin taper waist is required to excite strong evanescent field (EF) in order to obtain a large RI sensitivity. This situation creates a sensor fragile. For our structure, through the taper, LPFG can be formed and the sensitivity can be improved at the same time. The sensor has great potential in chemical composition analysis and biomedical applications.

Abstract:Stimulated Raman scattering of toluene and its mixture with chloroform is studied in liquid-core optical fiber. The results show a remarkably broadened Raman line of the mixture from about 630nm to 650nm by a pumping wavelength at 532nm, which is assigned to the interaction of CH vibrations of the two liquids. The results suggest that interactions between adjacent vibrations can produce strong and wide Raman spectra in liquid-core fiber which may prove a new simple way for supercontinuum generation. Abstract:We have designed and fabricated a single-mode Raman gain fiber (RGF) and use it to experimentally demonstrate a Raman distributed temperature sensor (RDTS) for high-precision temperature measurement with low power consumption. We have performed simulation to analyze the impact of fluorine-doped inner cladding on the control of the acoustic field and suppression of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), showing that the SBS threshold can be improved by 37dB at 6wt% fluorine-doping concentration. Taking advantage of high Raman gain, a maximum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) improvement of 6dB has been realized by using RGF under the same pump power as by using single-mode fiber (SMF), and the temperature uncertainty at the fiber end is enhanced from 0.9°C to 0.5°C. To achieve comparable sensing accuracy as that of SMF-based RDTS, our RGF-based RDTS only consumes half of the power, showing good energy efficiency. The magnitude of SNR and temperature uncertainty enhancement is limited by the relatively large fiber attenuation, but it can be further improved through optimization of the fiber design with high fluorine-doping concentration and graded index structure.

Abstract:We study the stimulated Raman emission of a high-Q polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-coated silica microsphere on a silicon chip. In this hybrid structure, as the thickness of the PDMS coating increases, the spatial distribution of the whispering gallery modes moves inside the PDMS layer, and the light emission switches from silica Raman lasing to PDMS Raman lasing. The Raman shift of the PDMS Raman laser is measured at 2900 cm(-1), corresponding to the strongest Raman fingerprint of bulk PDMS material. The threshold for this PDMS Raman lasing is demonstrated to be as low as 1.3 mW. This type of Raman emission from a surface-coated high-Q microcavity not only provides a route for extending lasing wavelengths, but also shows potential for detecting specific analytes.

Abstract:This Letter introduces a novel laser emission probe for liquid-crystal microspheres based on a tapered fiber. A cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) is injected into a hollow glass microsphere (HGM) attached at the front end of a tapered fiber in order to produce laser. Tapered fibers are preferable to rectangular fibers for liquid-crystal microsphere laser emission. The whispering gallery mode (WGM) laser is significantly suppressed by the tapered fiber-based liquid-crystal microsphere, which also displays an apparent single-mode photonic bandgap (PBG) laser peak. The stimulation response of tapered fiber-based liquid-crystal microspheres to organic vapors causes a modification of the laser peak wavelength with increasing gas concentration. In addition, laser emission generated by tapered fiber-based liquid-crystal microspheres is expected to be used in fields such as microenvironmental biosensing.

The Theoretical Research and Experimental Fabrication of the Dispersion Turning Point Sensors Realized in Tapered-Microfibers

Abstract:A tapered-microfiber sensor near the dispersion turning point (DTP) is theoretically researched and experimentally fabricated by carefully tapering a standard single mode fiber (SMF). With respect to other tapered fiber sensors, the microfiber sensor near DTP has quite high sensitivity, which is verified by the theoretical analysis in this work. The influences of two critical structural parameters, the tapering length and the waist diameter, on the occurrence of DTP are also studied. Furthermore, the preparation technology of this sensor is experimentally explored. As last, the transmission spectrum of the fabricated microfiber DTP sensor is highly consistent with that in theoretical calculation. These results show its potential for humidity sensing and other environmental trace detection.

Abstract:We report here the low-loss double-end coupling of an anti-resonant hollow-core fiber (AR-HCF) with a solid-core single-mode fiber by the fiber tapering technique for the first time. The double-end coupling model is established by the beam propagation method, and the various influences, such as those of insertion depth, tapered waist offset, tapered waist bending, etc, on the coupling efficiency are simulated in detail. Results show that the coupling efficiency can be optimized by choosing proper waist diameters of the tapered solid-core fibers at both ends; meanwhile, the output taped fiber must be inserted into the proper depth. The calculated maximum coupling efficiency is 70.8% for AR-HCF of the core diameter 46 μ m at the 1.5 μ m band, and the measured value is ~52.3%, which is hoped to be further increased by improving the performance of the tapered fibers and the coupling system. This work opens new opportunities for all-fiber structured gas lasers, which is very significant for its future applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate an all-fiber high-power narrow-linewidth fiber laser based on a homemade tapered Yb-doped fiber (T-YDF). The laser performance is investigated and systematically compared with different seed powers and pump manners. The experimental results reveal that the injected seed power requires a trade-off designed to take into account the impact of spectral broadening, nonlinear effects, and transverse mode instability (TMI). Compared with the co-pump manner, the counter-pump manner performs well in inhibiting nonlinearities, spectral broadening, and improving the TMI threshold. Under the counter-pump manner, this narrow-linewidth T-YDF amplifier realized a 2.09 kW output power with a 3 dB spectral linewidth of ∼0.34 nm, a beam quality of M<sup>2</sup>∼1.28 and a high Raman suppression ratio over 53.5 dB, the highest reported power for such a T-YDF-based narrow-linewidth single-mode laser, to the best of our knowledge. This work provides a promising pathway towards implementing monolithic high-power narrow-linewidth single-mode fiber lasers.
