Abstract:A compact bidirectional polarization splitting antenna (BPSA) composed of a patterned metallic structure coated by a thin dielectric film is proposed and theoretically investigated. Using a polarization-selective array of grooves, the backside illuminated light transmitted through the central nanoslit is split and coupled into TM- and TE-polarized modes supported by the metal-dielectric-air (MDA) configuration. The operation principle of the structure is clarified and theoretically illustrated by utilizing the fully vectorial aperiodic Fourier modal method (a-FMM). Numerical simulations show that insertion losses (ILs) less than 4 dB, polarization extinction ratios (PERs) better than 18 dB, and crosstalk (CR) less than -18 dB are achieved for both polarizations in the wavelength range 1510-1570 nm. The structure will find potential applications in highly integrated polarization diversity systems and photonic integrated circuit.

Abstract:A novel kind of circular polarization and dual-frequency linear polarization microstrip antennas is proposed. The designs are based on the anisotropic property of the complementary split ring resonator. When the complementary split ring resonator is etched on the patch of the probe-fed microstrip antenna, the gap orientation asymmetric or symmetric to the current propagating direction will render the antenna to radiate circular polarization waves or dual-frequency linear polarization waves. Details of the experimental results compared with the simulated results are presented and discussed.

Abstract:In order to implement circular polarization (CP) reconfigure, a semicircular ring antenna array has been designed by using liquid metal (LM). The array consists of eight CP antenna elements and a continuous-feeding network. A pair of slots are corroded on the radiation patch, and tubes are glued to the slots. The reconfigurable polarization was achieved by changing the current at the antenna surface after pushing the LM flowing to cover the slot with a microflow pump, then generating two degenerate modes. Therefore, a linear polarization and a right-/left-handed CP can be reconfigured. To verify this design, the antenna prototype has been fabricated; and the measurement results prove that the newly designed antenna array can archive three polarization forms, also presenting good work performance.
Compact Surface Wave Polarization Splitter Based on the Metallic-Dielectric-air Waveguide

Abstract:We proposed a compact surface wave polarization splitter based on the metallic-dielectric-air (MDA) waveguide with an slit surrounded by asymmetric corrugations. The incident light coupled to the MDA waveguide through the aperture is split into TE- and TM-polarized electromagnetic surface modes by the polarization-sensitive corrugations on each side. Polarization extinction ratios better than 20 dB are achieved for both polarizations. The structure would be interesting for a variety of optical devices and nanophotonics.

Abstract:A novel design of circular polarization microstrip patch antenna based on the complementary split ring resonator is evaluated numerically and experimentally verified. Unlike the previous application of its resonant performance, the non-resonant property of complementary split ring resonator is used as an asymmetric perturbation to excite the square microstrip patch antenna for a good circular polarization radiation. Good agreement is observed between the measurement and simulation results.

The back-side incident light coupled to the metal-dielectric-air waveguide is split and launched into TM plasmonic and TE photonic modes simultaneously. Polarization extinction ratios better than 15 dB and crosstalk less than 15 dB are achieved for both polarizations over C-band ranging from 1530 to 1570 nm.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel polarization-reconfigurable antenna based on the combination of circularly polarized (CP) modes, which is capable of changing its polarization states among arbitrary linear polarizations (LPs), left-handed circular polarization (LHCP) and right-handed circular polarization (RHCP). A truncated square patch with two isolated aperture-coupling feeds is used as radiation element operating at 2.45 GHz, which can operate in two orthogonal CP modes with low crosstalk. By exciting one of the two feeding microstrip lines, LHCP or RHCP mode can be independently generated. Meanwhile, by simultaneously exciting the two feeding microstrip lines with identical amplitudes but with different initial phases, LP mode with polarization plane oriented in any desired azimuth direction can be obtained. The simulated and measured peak gain of the proposed antenna remains at about 6.8 dBi at 2.45 GHz and the impedance matching bandwidth ranging from 2.25 to 2.60 GHz is fully overlapped for all the polarization states. Experimental results show a good performance of the proposed antenna.

Abstract:A submicron asymmetric dielectric-coated metal slit with a Fabry–Perot (FP) nano-resonator is experimentally fabricated to realize an ultra-small on-chip polarization splitter. In the hybrid plasmonic structure, both of the transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) modes can be efficiently generated on the front metal surface. Based on the quite different resonant conditions and the different field confinements of the two orthogonal polarization modes in the FP resonator, the TM and TE modes are generated to propagate in the opposite directions along the metal surface. In this device, there are no coupling waveguide regions, and the excitation and the splitting of the TE and TM modes are integrated into the same asymmetric nano-slit. This considerably shrinks the device dimension to only about 850 nm (about one wavelength). In such a submicron asymmetric slit, the measured extinction ratios for the two opposite directions can reach up to (ηL/ηR)TM ≈ 1:14 and (ηL/ηR)TE ≈ 11:1 at λ = 820 nm. This on-chip submicron polarization splitter is of importance in highly integrated photonic circuits.
Plasmonic Polarization Nano-Splitter Based on Asymmetric Optical Slot Antenna Pairs.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a plasmonic polarization nano-splitter composed of asymmetric optical slot antenna pairs. Broadband polarization-controlled unidirectional surface plasmon polariton (SPP) launching and splitting are achieved experimentally using an asymmetric optical slot antenna pair array. Both transverseelectric and transverse-magnetic-polarized incident light is coupled to SPPs on the metal surface, but with opposite directions. The measured extinction ratio for the two opposite propagating directions is larger than 5 dB within a bandwidth of 160 nm and reaches up to similar to 12 dB at an incident wavelength of 790 nm. This plasmonic polarization nano-splitter, together with the polarization-controlled unidirectional SPP coupler, may have promising applications in the nano-optics and integrated optical circuits. Abstract:An ultracompact and silicon-on-insulator-compatible polarization splitter (PS) is proposed by utilizing asymmetric directional coupling between a hybrid plasmonic waveguide and a strip dielectric waveguide. Owing to the plasmon-assisted asymmetry, birefringence is highly enhanced. Polarization splitting can be realized by strong coupling of one polarization while the other polarization is phase-mismatched. As an example, a PS based on strong TM coupling is demonstrated at the wavelength of 1.55 μm with a coupling length of 4.13 μm. Extinction ratios are 20.9 and 16.4 dB for TM and TE polarizations, respectively. The device is also broadband and fabrication-tolerant.

Abstract:This communication presents a compact, low-profile, wideband, polarization-reconfigurable antenna with right-handed circular polarization (RHCP), left-handed circular polarization (LHCP), and linear polarization (LP) diversity. The antenna consisting of quadruple identical gap-coupled square patches possesses dual wideband degenerate modes, which could be properly allocated by controlling ON/OFF states of four p-i-n diodes integrated into an overlying specially engineered driven element to dynamically produce RHCP, LHCP, and LP radiations. Due to the collaboration between the gap-coupled patches and such a reconfigurable driven element, the proposed design could operate in a wide overlapped bandwidth of 7.1% in the three dynamical states while keeping a compact size of $0.56lambda _{0},,times ,,0.56lambda _{0}$ and a low profile of $0.037lambda _{0}$ . Benefiting from the advantages of low profile, compact size, and wideband operation in three polarization-reconfigurable states, the proposed antenna is quite suitable for space-limited, wideband, intelligent, and anti-interference wireless systems.

Abstract:A compact bidirectional polarization splitter based on two cascaded sub-gratings in a metallic-dielectric-air (MDA) waveguide is proposed and theoretically analyzed. The normally incident beam coupled to the MDA waveguide is split into left-going TE- and right-going TM-polarized modes by the structure. The operation principle is clarified and a coupled-mode model is developed for facilitating design. The polarization extinction ratio better than 33 dB and crosstalk less than -41 dB for TE-polarized mode and the corresponding 36 and -28 dB for TM-polarized mode are achieved at the operating wavelength 850 nm.

Abstract:A method to design the metasurface‐based splitter with dual beams which have different power distributions, polarizations, and radiated angles is proposed. The presented metasurface is ultrathin which is only 0.12λ and the whole unit cell is mainly composed of receiving antenna with single‐polarization, power divider, dual‐channel phase shifter with independent control and transmitting antenna with dual‐polarization. According to the functional requirements of the beam splitter, the main components which are power divider and phase shifter can be artificially tailored correspondingly. And the fixed design of receiving and transmitting antennas can receive the incident electromagnetic (EM) wave with single‐polarization and transmit the EM wave with dual‐polarization, respectively. Comparing with conventional cascaded transmitarray and bulk lens, the design logic of proposed whole splitter is very clear that scanning and optimizing massive parameters of unit cells for satisfying the demands of polarization, transmission phase, and power distribution simultaneously is not needed. The good consistent results of experiment and simulation can verify the validity of our design. A method for designing the metasurface‐based splitter with dual beams which have different power distributions, polarizations, and radiated angles is proposed. Abstract:Array antennas with multipolarization function have important research value to improve the stable transmission of communication systems by supporting antenna diversity technology. In this letter, a millimeter-wave (mm-wave) quadri-polarization array antenna based on folded C-type substrate integrated waveguide is proposed. The operating principle is that the proposed differential feeding network can flexibly provide the required amplitude and phase difference, so that four mutually perpendicular single-branch slot array antennas can achieve multiple polarization characteristics. In addition, by removing the metal floor around the array antenna, the distortion of the antenna's main beam is suppressed. Simulation and experimental results show that the proposed quadri-polarization array antenna can provide orthogonal dual-linear polarization and dual-circular polarization radiation patterns. At the same time, it has the advantages of low profile and easy integration.

Abstract:Polarization beam splitters, devices that separate the two orthogonal polarizations of light into different propagation directions, are among the most ubiquitous optical elements. However, traditionally polarization splitters rely on bulky optical materials, while emerging optoelectronic and photonic circuits require compact, chip-scale polarization splitters. Here, we show that a rectangular lattice of cylindrical silicon Mie resonators functions as a polarization splitter, efficiently reflecting one polarization while transmitting the other. We show that the polarization splitting arises from the anisotropic permittivity and permeability of the metasurface due to the twofold rotational symmetry of the rectangular unit cell. The high polarization efficiency, low loss and low profile make these metasurface polarization splitters ideally suited for monolithic integration with optoelectronic and photonic circuits.This article is part of the themed issue 'New horizons for nanophotonics'.
A Polarization Reconfigurable Patch Antenna with Loop Slots on the Ground Plane

Abstract:This letter proposes a reconfigurable microstrip patch antenna with polarization states being switched among linear polarization (LP), left-hand (LH) and right-hand (RH) circular polarizations (CP). The CP waves are excited by two perturbation elements of loop slots in the ground plane. A p-i-n diode is placed on every slot to alter the current direction, which determines the polarization state. The influences of the slots and p-i-n diodes on antenna performance are minimized because the slots and diodes are not on the patch. The simulated and measured results verified the effectiveness of the proposed antenna configuration. The experimental bandwidths of the -10-dB reflection coefficient for LHCP and RHCP are about 60 MHz, while for LP is about 30 MHz. The bandwidths of the 3-dB axial ratio for both CP states are 20 MHz with best value of 0.5 dB at the center frequency on the broadside direction. Gains for two CP operations are 6.4 dB, and that for the LP one is 5.83 dB. This reconfigurable patch antenna with agile polarization has good performance and concise structure, which can be used for 2.4 GHz wireless communication systems.
A Compact Metasurface Antenna Array with Diverse Polarizations

Abstract:In this letter, a compact metasurface antenna array with diverse polarizations is proposed. The array element is a dual-polarized metasurface antenna driven with a square patch. In order to have compact size and low sidelobes for the antenna array, shared radiating elements are applied for both polarizations with a size reduction of 18.8% for a 1 × 4 antenna array. The diverse polarization property is achieved with the method of maximum power transmission efficiency (MMPTE), in which a dual-feed patch antenna connected to an ideal power combiner is chosen as the receiving antenna. With different scattering matrices of the power combiner, it is easy to calculate the excitation distribution for any polarizations with maximum gain. For demonstration, the antenna array with diverse polarizations is designed, fabricated, and measured.
