Abstract:In the long-wavelength limit, a periodic array of bottom-mounted vertical cylinders may be used as a homogeneous medium for liquid surface waves and their effective parameters, such as their refractive index, depending on the filling fraction of the cylinders. Based on this effective medium theory, a gradient index (GRIN) lens for the focusing of liquid surface waves has been designed and fabricated here through the gradual modification of the cylinder filling fraction along a direction perpendicular to the lens axis. Their focusing performance and the transmission properties for liquid surface waves are then studied both experimentally and numerically. Both the wave patterns and spatial intensities obtained by experiment and numerical calculation demonstrate that the GRIN lens is able to focus planar liquid surface waves within a certain frequency region. Abstract:The refractive index distribution in atmosphere or fluid medium is irregular and inhomogeneous, and cannot be described by a usual gradient index formula due to the influence of flowage and change of temperature. In this paper a novel method, namely, self-adaptive grid is used for describing the refractive index in irregular inhomogeneous medium, the refractive index data are stored in RAM as a dynamic octree, the criterion of grid division for refractive index and its gradient are given and the interpolation method is used for calculating the refractive index and its gradient at positions along the ray trace trajectory. A gradient index (GRIN) rod in which the refractive index can be described by a formula is also analysis as an example, the self-adaptive grid is created and the refractive indexes and its gradient at some positions with high accuracy are output. The RMS error is under 7e-5 and can be used for ray tracing.

Abstract:A novel scheme to achieve a back reflector based on two-dimensional dielectric-metal graded metasurface is proposed, which presents high-efficiency over a broad range of incident solid angles and wavelengths. The remarkable performance is achieved by an effective optimization by searching the maximum reflection and the lowest deviation angle at a certain diffraction order. The optimized structure, working as a two-dimensional Littrow grating, is able to funnel the incident energy into the diffraction order (1, 1) to reflect almost all (> 92%) the impinging light back based on Huygens-Fresnel principle.

Abstract:Inspired by the soft, deformable human eye lens, a synthetic polymer gradient refractive index distribution (GRIN) lens with an adaptive geometry and focal power has been demonstrated via multilayer coextrusion and thermoforming of nanolayered elastomeric polymer films. A set of 30 polymer nanolayered films comprised of two thermoplastic polyurethanes having a refractive index difference of 0.05 were coextruded via forced-assembly technique. The set of 30 nanolayered polymer films exhibited transmission near 90% with each film varying in refractive index by 0.0017. An adaptive GRIN lens was fabricated from a laminated stack of the variable refractive index films with a 0.05 spherical GRIN. This lens was subsequently deformed by mechanical ring compression of the lens. Variation in the optical properties of the deformable GRIN lens was determined, including 20% variation in focal length and reduced spherical aberration. These properties were measured and compared to simulated results by placido-cone topography and ANSYS methods. The demonstration of a solid-state, dynamic focal length, GRIN lens with improved aberration correction was discussed relative to the potential future use in implantable devices. Abstract:We have proposed a new method to achieve gradient refractive-index (GRIN) optics via a compound liquid medium. By adjusting the composition of the liquid medium, the refractive index of the compound liquid was tuned in a very broad range from 1.58 to 5.15. The liquid medium also exhibited weak frequency dependence. Based on these properties, we designed a liquid GRIN planar lens and experimentally demonstrated the feasibility of this approach. The beam deflection of the lens was controlled by adjusting the distribution of the refractive-index of the lens. By changing the composition of the compound liquids in different cells of the lens framework, different spatial gradually varied refractive index profiles have been achieved. The proposed liquid planar lens has shown a good directive property at different receiving angles and demonstrated a broadband performance between 12 GHz and 15 GHz. This method results in a rapid and flexible realization of gradient refractive index structures by using liquid medium.

Abstract:Graded index (GRIN) lenses focus light through a radially symmetric refractive index profile. It is not widely appreciated that the ion-exchange process that creates the index profile also causes a radially symmetric birefringence variation. This property is usually considered a nuisance, such that manufacturing processes are optimized to keep it to a minimum. Here we show that this birefringence can be harnessed as a basis of a versatile and expandable vectorial state manipulator. Using standard GRIN lenses in cascade with other optical components, we generate various states, including full Poincaré beams that also contain orbital angular momentum. The combination of highly-symmetrical graded refractive index and corresponding birefringence – which benefit from the mature technology of the ion-exchange process – permit precise, simultaneous, phase and polarization modulation, which – when combined in a cascade structure with other elements – forms the basis for several applications. The non-pixelated nature of the birefringence of the lens, optical efficiency of the lens, and complex geometric phase inside the lens may also benefit future applications such as precision beam generation and quantum manipulation. All of these complex vectorial beam manipulations are achieved using off-the-shelf, inexpensive, passive optical components.

Abstract:We report enhanced reflection displayed by arrays of silicon based inverted nanocones. Theoretical studies suggest that such arrays display enhanced reflection and photonic band gaps within the optical and near infrared regions. Measured results show three to four fold enhancement in reflection and agree well with calculations. Such arrays can be used to enhance infrared reflection in photovoltaic devices which mostly contribute towards heating.

Abstract:Graded index (GRIN) lenses are commonly used for compact imaging systems. It is not widely appreciated that the ion-exchange process that creates the rotationally symmetric GRIN lens index profile also causes a symmetric birefringence variation. This property is usually considered a nuisance, such that manufacturing processes are optimized to keep it to a minimum. Here, rather than avoiding this birefringence, we understand and harness it by using GRIN lenses in cascade with other optical components to enable extra functionality in commonplace GRIN lens systems. We show how birefringence in the GRIN cascades can generate vector vortex beams and foci, and how it can be used advantageously to improve axial resolution. Through using the birefringence for analysis, we show that the GRIN cascades form the basis of a new single-shot Mueller matrix polarimeter with potential for endoscopic label-free cancer diagnostics. The versatility of these cascades opens up new technological directions.

Abstract:By engineering densely packed arrays of metallic nanoparticles, a GRIN lens light‐sink is built where light is preferentially directed toward the center. Unlike traditional bulky macroscopic GRIN lenses, this light‐sink features a size under 2.5 μm, with exceptional control over the local refractive index. Gradient‐index (GRIN) lenses have long been recognized for their importance in optics as a result of their ability to manipulate light. However, traditional GRIN lenses are limited on a scale of tens of microns, impeding their integration into nanoscale optical devices. This study presents a groundbreaking self‐assembled method that overcomes this limitation, allowing for constructing GRIN lenses at an extremely small dimension. The self‐assembly process offers several advantages, including creating highly precise, scalable, cost‐effective, and complex structures that eliminate the need for intricate and time‐consuming manual assembly. By engineering densely packed arrays of metallic nanoparticles, exceptional control over the local refractive index has been achieved. This is accomplished by layer‐by‐layer assembly of gold nanoparticles of different sizes over silica beads. A GRIN lens light‐sink is built where light is preferentially directed toward the center, which is corroborated by measuring the fluorescence of Rhodamine B (RhB) in the inside. Unlike traditional bulky macroscopic GRIN lenses, light‐sinks boast a size under 2.5 μm. Notably, the self‐focusing effects of this design allowed us to track the growth of single‐nanoparticle layers using SERS (Surface‐Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy). These results pave the way for designing and developing lens‐like devices at the nanoscale, allowing unprecedented light manipulation.

Abstract:Reconfigurable reflectors have significant potential in future telecommunication systems, and approaches to the design and realization of full and tunable reflection control are now actively studied. Reflectarrays, being the classical approach to realize scanning reflectors, are based on the phased-array theory (the so-called generalized reflection law) and physical optics approximation of the reflection response. To overcome the limitations of the reflectarray technology, researchers actively study inhomogeneous metasurfaces, using the theory of diffraction gratings. To make these devices tunable and fully realize their potential, it is necessary to unify the two approaches and study reconfigurable reflectors from a unified point of view. Here, we offer a tutorial on reflectarrays and metasurface reflectors, explaining their common fundamental properties that stem from the diffraction theory. This tutorial is suitable for graduate and postgraduate students and hopefully will help to develop deeper understanding of both phased arrays and diffraction gratings.

Abstract:We report a two-dimensional (2D) tunable liquid gradient refractive index (L-GRIN) lens for variable focusing of light in the out-of-plane direction. This lens focuses a light beam through a liquid medium with a 2D hyperbolic secant (HS) refractive index gradient. The refractive index gradient is established in a microfluidic chamber through the diffusion between two fluids with different refractive indices, i.e. CaCl(2) solution and deionized (DI) water. The 2D HS refractive index profile and subsequently the focal length of the L-GRIN lens can be tuned by changing the ratio of the flow rates of the CaCl2 solution and DI water. The focusing effect is experimentally characterized through side-view and top-view image analysis, and the experimental data match well with the results from ray-tracing optical simulations. Advantages of the 2D L-GRIN lens include simple device fabrication procedure, low fluid consumption rate, convenient lens-tuning mechanism, and compatibility with existing microfluidic devices. We expect that with further optimizations, this 2D L-GRIN lens can be used in many optics-based lab-on-a-chip applications.
Flat silicon gradient index lens with deep reactive-ion-etched 3-layer anti-reflection structure for millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths

Abstract:We present the design, fabrication, and characterization of a 100 mm diameter, flat, gradient-index (GRIN) lens fabricated with high-resistivity silicon, combined with a three-layer anti-reflection (AR) structure optimized for 160-355 GHz. Multi-depth, deep reactive-ion etching (DRIE) enables patterning of silicon wafers with sub-wavelength structures (posts or holes) to locally change the effective refractive index and thus create anti-reflection layers and a radial index gradient. The structures are non-resonant and, for sufficiently long wavelengths, achromatic. Hexagonal holes varying in size with distance from the optical axis create a parabolic index profile decreasing from 3.15 at the center of the lens to 1.87 at the edge. The AR structure consists of square holes and cross-shaped posts. We have fabricated a lens consisting of a stack of five 525 $\mu$m thick GRIN wafers and one AR wafer on each face. We have characterized the lens over the frequency range 220-330 GHz, obtaining behavior consistent with Gaussian optics down to -14 dB and transmittance between 75% and 100%.

Abstract:We proposed a method to realize three-dimensional (3D) gradient index (GRIN) devices requiring large refractive index (RI) range with broadband performance. By combining non-resonant GRIN woodpile photonic crystals structure in the metamaterial regime with a compound liquid medium, a wide RI range (1-6.32) was fulfilled flexibly. As a proof-of-principle for the low-loss and non-dispersive method, a 3D Eaton lens was designed and fabricated based on 3D printing process. Full-wave simulation and experiment validated its omnidirectional wave bending effects in a broad bandwidth covering Ku band (12 GHz-18 GHz). (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:Infrared gradient refractive index (GRIN) material lenses have attracted much attention due to their continuously varying refractive index as a function of spatial coordinates in the medium. Herein, a glass accumulation thermal diffusion method was used to fabricate a high refractive index GRIN lens. Six Ge17.2As17.2SexTe(65−x) (x = 10.5–16) glasses with good thermal stability and high refractive index (n@10 μm > 3.1) were selected for thermal diffusion. The refractive index span (∆n) of 0.12 was achieved in this GRIN lens. After thermal diffusion, the lens still had good transmittance (45%) in the range of 8–12 μm. Thermal imaging confirmed that this lens can be molded into the designed shape. The refractive index profile was indirectly characterized by the structure and composition changes. The structure and composition variation became linear with the increase in temperature from 260 °C to 270 °C for 12 h, indicating that the refractive index changed linearly along the axis. The GRIN lens with a high refractive index could find applications in infrared optical systems and infrared lenses for thermal imaging.

Abstract:We propose planar, high numerical aperture (NA), low loss, focusing reflectors and lenses using subwavelength high contrast gratings (HCGs). By designing the reflectance and the phase of non-periodic HCGs, both focusing reflectors and lenses can be constructed. Numerical aperture values as high as 0.81 and 0.96 are achieved for a reflector and lens with very low losses of 0.3 and 0.2 dB, respectively. The design algorithm is also shown to be readily extended to a 2D lens. Furthermore, HCG optics can simultaneously focus the reflected and transmitted waves, with important technological implications. HCG focusing optics are defined by one-step photolithography and thus can be readily integrated with many devices including VCSELs, saturable absorbers, telescopes, CCDs and solar cells.

Numerical method for designing gradient refractive index lens

Abstract:The orthodox method for designing gradient refractive index lens requires that the feeding antenna possesses a steady phase center, which restricts the application of this lens. To break through the restriction, the paper presents a numerical method. By sampling the polarized electric field of the feeding antenna, phases of the electric field are got. Then they are used to design the gradient refractive index lens, which is fabricated from metamaterials with cut-wires structure. The design method is straightforward and flexible, with no restriction on the feeding antenna. Taking patch antenna as demonstration, the return losses and radiation patterns of the patch antenna and the lens antenna are compared. The data show that the lens obviously improves the gain and efficiency of the patch antenna. The gain is improved by 2 dB and the efficiency is increased from 62% to 99%.

Abstract:Gradient refractive index (GRIN) materials utilize an internally tailored refractive index in combination with the designed curvature of the optical element surface, providing the optical designer with additional freedom for correcting chromatic and spherical aberrations. In this paper, new GRIN materials suitable for the second (3-5 µm) and third (8-12 µm) atmospheric windows were successfully developed by the thermal diffusion method based on Ge20As20Se60-xTex series high refractive index glasses, where the maximum refractive index difference (Δn) at 4 µm and 10.6 µm were 0.281 and 0.277, respectively. The diffusion characteristics and refractive index distribution of the GRIN glass were analyzed by Raman characterization. Furthermore, the performance of GRIN singlet and homogeneous singlet in the LWIR band (8 µm, 10.6 µm (primary wavelength), 12 µm) was compared, and the results showed that the GRIN singlet had better chromatic aberration correction and unique dispersion characteristics.
