Abstract:With the increasing interest in the applications of large deployable reflector antennas operating at high frequencies, the requirement on the reflector surface accuracy becomes more demanding. Thermal effects inevitably cause certain reflector surface distortions, thus degrading the overall antenna performance. This paper introduces a novel reflector surface distortion compensation technique using a subreflectarray and presents detailed discussions. A microstrip reflectarray is used as a subreflector, illuminated by a primary feed. By properly adjusting the additional phase shift provided by the subreflectarray, the aperture phase errors caused by the main reflector surface distortions are compensated, resulting in a considerably improved antenna performance. As an example, a distorted 20-m offset parabolic reflector antenna operating at X-band is successfully compensated by a subreflectarray, and the simulation results are compared with those obtained by array feed and shaped subreflector compensation techniques. The microstrip subreflectarray is low-profile, lightweight, and cost-effective. Only one primary feed is required, and a reconfigurable design can be achieved if electronically reconfigurable reflectarray elements are adopted.

Back-projection holography was used to study the effects of the distortion on the antenna's performance. The conjugate-field-matching method was used to obtain phase excitations at the sub-reflectarray element locations for distortion compensation. A prototype microstrip-patch-type sub-reflectarray was designed and fabricated. Radiation-pattern measurements and holographic diagnostics demonstrated the compensating technique, and showed that the sub-reflectarray drastically improved the antenna's performance.

Abstract:The sub-reflectarray compensating technique is proposed for the spherical aberration compensation in this paper. A microstrip reflectarray is a low-profile, inexpensive, and easy-to-build antenna with phase controlling capability. It is utilized as a phase actuator in a spherical reflector. By properly adjusting the reflection phase of each reflectarray element, an equal phase distribution is achieved at the exit aperture plane of the spherical reflector, and the spherical aberration is thus corrected. A 35-m spherical reflector is selected as an example to validate this concept, and the simulation results show considerable improvement. Compared with the planar array feed compensating technique, this novel technique can provide a slightly better performance, and the potential losses in the beam forming network for array feed can be circumvented.

Abstract:Spherical reflectors have been used as wide-angle scanning antennas due to the unique geometric properties of the sphere. The inherent spherical aberration, however. causes considerable performance degradation. This article presents a novel sub-reflectarray compensating technique to correct it. A microstrip reflectarray is a planar, inexpensive, passive device with unique capabilities of controlling reflection phases. By exploiting this feasible property, it is employed as an auxiliary phase corrector, and the phase errors caused by spherical aberration ore compensated. Two e examples, a 35-m spherical reflector antenna at Ka-band and a 1.5-m breadboard spherical reflector, are presented, and simulation results show: great performance improvement both no scan and large scan cases. Because of the difficulty tit measuring large reflector antennas at UCLA, it is part of future plan to collaborate with other institutions for the verification of the concept. However, we believe that the simulation results generated in this article should provide acceptable performance prediction of the proposed antenna design. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:The far-field diffraction pattern (FFDP) of a corner cube retroreflector (CCR) determines the energy of a retroreflecting beam in some applications including laser ranging, optical communication, and satellite orbit calibration. The FFDP of an imperfect CCR is investigated analytically for the non-normal incidence of a polarized light beam. We first derive a complex amplitude of a retroreflecting beam in relation with multiple parameters including the errors of dihedral angle, flatness in a CCR, and polarization property of the CCR. Then a theoretical expression of the FFDP for a nonideal CCR is deduced as a function of multiple parameters by introducing the complex amplitude into a simplified Kirchhoff's diffraction equation. Some numerically simulated results of the FFDP are presented to give a visual illustration of the relationship between the FFDP and these parameters. Our findings suggest that a strong correlation between the FFDPs and multiple factors comprising the manufacturing errors, the polarization states, and the incident angles of the input beam as well as whether the reflecting faces of the CCR are coated or not. The FFDPs can be efficiently controlled by allocating the magnitudes of these factors. Moreover, experimental verification of the FFDP is also developed for a nonideal CCR coated with silver film on the reflecting faces at a non-normal incidence. The proposed mathematical model potentially offers beneficial ingredients towards optimizing design of a CCR by considering both the manufacturing errors and incident conditions of the input beam. A Novel Radiometric Projector Compensation Algorithm Based on Lambertian Reflection Model

Abstract:In this paper, a novel radiometric compensation algorithm based on Lambertian reflection model is proposed to neutralize the visual perception of colors and textures which are intrinsic to the projection display surface. The algorithm uses a calibration method of advanced coded structure light to determine the geometric mapping between corresponding points in the projector-camera system. Concrete analysis of the dynamic range of projectors is applied to obtain the intensity limits of the input image. Consequently, the Lambertian reflection model is constructed for each point to compute the radiometric compensation function between displayed images and camera captured images. Experimental results show that this algorithm can effectively correct color inaccuracy of projection on arbitrary textured surfaces, and observers almost hard to notice visible artifacts of projected images.
Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) Actuated Wave Front Correcting Subreflector: Distortion Compensation for Large Reflector Antennas

Abstract:Gain loss in large reflector antennas due to main reflector surface distortion is a significant problem in both ground and spacecraft antennas. There are two aspects that need to be considered: 1) Since the shape of the main reflector surface is generally not known it is necessary to determine the characteristics of the actual distortion in real time and 2) A method of compensating for the distortions is required. Three techniques for measuring the main reflector surface distortion are discussed. 1) A two-camera optical surface- measuring system using photogrammetry, 2) A small array feed placed in the focal plane of the reflector system and 3) Small probes placed on the subreflector. It was demonstrated that all three methods can recover the main reflector distortion with the subreflector probe method seeming to offer the simplest (least number of probes and minimal computation) implementation. Extensive work has been performed at JPL on the use of a deformable mirror to correct for the gravity induced distortions on a large ground reflector antenna. This work culminated in a demonstration of a deformable mirror on the NASA/JPL 70- meter antenna in early 1999. An electronic version of the deformable mirror is proposed for use with large reflector inflatable antennas for spacecraft. The mirror consists of a light weight surface made up of a reflect array of patches whose reflection phase is controlled via RF MEMS switches. Different reflectarray designs were studied for this particular application and it was decided that the element with variable slot on the ground plane was best suited keeping in mind the MEMS implementation. Some experimental results with the MEMS integrated with the reflect array patch are shown.

Abstract:Reflectarrays are used as a hyperboloidal or ellipsoidal subreflector in dual-reflector antenna systems. The design formulas for reflectarrays acting as hyperboloid are discussed and its location consideration which is important for dual-reflector system is presented. A 48-inch Cassegrain antenna is chosen to demonstrate the application of compact dual-reflector designs. A subreflectarray is designed to emulate a hyperboloidal subreflector and the plots of the reflection phase shift and scattered field of the subreflectarray validate its effectiveness.

Abstract:A novel scheme to achieve a back reflector based on two-dimensional dielectric-metal graded metasurface is proposed, which presents high-efficiency over a broad range of incident solid angles and wavelengths. The remarkable performance is achieved by an effective optimization by searching the maximum reflection and the lowest deviation angle at a certain diffraction order. The optimized structure, working as a two-dimensional Littrow grating, is able to funnel the incident energy into the diffraction order (1, 1) to reflect almost all (> 92%) the impinging light back based on Huygens-Fresnel principle.

Abstract:This paper experimentally demonstrates the use of a microstrip reflectarray as a low-profile planar substitute to a conic section subreflector (hyperboloidal type) in a symmetric dual reflector system at Ku-band. At first, a brief discussion on the simulation and measurement techniques utilized in the paper is provided. A nominal dual reflector Cassegrain system is synthesized through simulations where a feed horn is used to illuminate the hyperboloidal subreflector. Next, a flat metallic subreflector is placed at the subreflector location. This is a critical task as it shows the importance of phase compensation. Due to the flat subreflector, the feed is defocused from the image of the focus and creates phase aberration, leading to beam bifurcation, pattern degradation, and performance deterioration of the dual reflector system. A planar microstrip patch-type subreflectarray is then designed to mimic a hyperboloidal subreflector. Ray tracing is applied to the subreflector-feed system to calculate the phase needed to compensate for the axial defocusing of the feed. A prototype subreflectarray based on the ray-optics approach is fabricated. Radiation pattern measurements and back-projection holographic diagnostics demonstrate that the subreflectarray acts as a hyperboloidal subreflector and restores the antenna performance with a well-defined main beam and low side lobes.

Abstract:A perfect anomalous reflector is designed by employing the receiving and scattering array antenna theory to optimize the scattering characteristics of a planar reflecting surface. For periodic reflectors with a supercell consisting of a relatively few reactively loaded radiating elements, reflection amplitudes into propagating Floquet modes are controlled in an algebraic optimization of the load reactances, avoiding brute-force optimization via electromagnetic simulations. Wide-angle reflectors are numerically designed and compared with the conventional reflectarray designs, showing that the proposed design approach achieves reflection efficiencies higher than the linear reflection phase gradient method in a computationally efficient manner.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to present a novel diagnostic procedure for reflectarray design. By separating the fields into their incident, scattered and total components, one can get great insight into the working of the reflectarray as a parabolic surface. By plotting the actual phase provided by each reflectarray element in the true reflectarray environment, one can diagnose the design and find the flaws in the existing design. In order to validate this diagnostic approach, a good and a defected reflectarray were designed. The defected design produced lower directivity and higher side lobes. Using this diagnostic procedure, the defected area of the reflectarray was successfully identified.

Abstract:A novel way to design arbitrarily shaped retro-reflectors by optics surface transformation is proposed. The entire design process consists of filling an optic-null medium between the input and output surfaces of the retroreflector, on which the points have 180 deg reverse corresponding relations. The retro-reflector can be designed to be very thin(a planar structure) with high efficiency. The effective working angles of our retro-reflector are very large(from-80 deg to +80 deg), which can, in principle, be further extended. Layered metal plates and zero refractive index materials are designed to realize the proposed retro-reflector for a TM polarized beam.

Abstract:The sub-reflectarray (SR) has been designed to act as a hyperboloidal or ellipsoidal subreflector in a dual reflector system. In this work, the specular reflection effect in SRs is investigated. By exploiting the polarization properties of different reflectarray elements, the key components of the scattered fields of the SR are separated and compared. Full-wave simulation results show that the specular reflection can noticeably affect the radiation pattern of the SR. By properly choosing the polarization, geometry, and aperture phase distribution, its performance can be improved.

Abstract:Beam squint generally exists in offset reflector antennas with circularly polarized feeds. It is manifested by a small beam shift of the radiation pattern in the plane perpendicular to the principal offset plane, which can significantly affect the beam pointing accuracy. In this paper a practical and widely applicable compensation technique for the beam squint is proposed. Simulation results show that a small lateral feed displacement in the perpendicular plane can effectively minimize or eliminate the linear phase shift caused by the depolarization effect, thus compensating for the beam squint effect. This is in practice very useful for offset reflector antennas where the previously suggested method based on feed tilting may not be proper. A simple formula is derived to quickly estimate the optimal feed displacement for both right- and left-hand circularly polarized feeds. Three representative examples: a single offset parabolic reflector, a suboptimal offset Cassegrain reflector, and an axially symmetric Cassegrain reflector with an off-focus feed, are presented to validate the proposed method. Satisfactory results are achieved for all three examples.
On Understanding the Radiation Mechanism of Reflectarray Antennas: an Insightful and Illustrative Approach

Abstract:This article presents a unique point of view for microstrip reflectarrays. Through the effective utilization of graphical visualization of the scattered fields from the reflectarrays, one can gain insightful understanding into the fundamental workings of these antennas. The most important part of the reflectarray analysis and design is the accurate characterization of the individual reflectarray element for reflection phase performance. Using this visualization approach, reflectarray elements are characterized in unit-cell environments. This exercise aids in identifying the important geometrical parameters of the element that contribute to the reflection phase shift. These elements are then placed in an actual reflectarray environment, and the performance of the reflectarray is evaluated through full-wave electromagnetic simulations and measurements. It is validated that this technique can be successfully used to analyze, design, and potentially diagnose reflectarray antennas.
Tunable Perfect Anomalous Reflection Using Passive Aperiodic Gratings

Abstract:Realizing continuous sweeping of perfect anomalous reflection in a wide angular range has become a technical challenge. This challenge cannot be overcome by the conventional aperiodic reflectarrays and periodic metasurfaces or metagratings. In this paper, we investigate means to create scanning reflectarrays for the reflection of plane waves coming from any direction into any other direction without any parasitic scattering. The reflection angle can be continuously adjusted by proper tuning of reactive loads of each array element, while the geometrical period is kept constant. We conceptually study simple canonical two-dimensional arrays formed by impedance strips above a perfectly reflecting plane. This setup allows fully analytical solutions, which we exploit for understanding the physical nature of parasitic scattering and finding means to overcome fundamental limitations of conventional reflectarray antennas. We propose to use subwavelength-spaced arrays and optimize current distribution in $\lambda/2$-sized supercells. As a result, we demonstrate perfect tunable reflection to any angle. Our work provides an effective approach to design reconfigurable intelligent surfaces with electrically tunable reflection angles.
