Abstract:Recent progress on novel long-range coherent optical frequency domain reflectometry is reviewed along with its applications to diagnosing problems with optical fiber cables. The measurement range of a conventional C-OFDR is limited to the coherence length of the laser used as the light source, since the phase noise of the laser degrades the sharpness of the beat spectrum. We have developed phase-noise-compensated optical frequency domain reflectometry (PNC-OFDR) to overcome this limitation by introducing a novel phase-noise compensation technique, and we achieved a very high-resolution measurement over the fiber link length. We describe the principle of PNC-OFDR and recent related developments, and discuss its use in diagnosing issues with fiber networks.

Abstract:A spatial resolution of 10 cm was obtained for distances of 60 similar to 80 km in different field environments using phase-noise-compensated optical frequency domain reflectometry. The outstanding spatial resolution makes it possible to identify high-birefringence sections along installed cables. In field trials, we successfully observed beat lengths as small as similar to 20 cm, which showed that there were very large birefringence sections in the installed cables. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that such short beat lengths have been directly detected in a nondestructive measurement for long fibers, and the result will be very useful in relation to fiber management.

Abstract:We present a bandwidth-division phase-noise-compensated optical frequency domain reflectometry (PNC-OFDR) technique, which permits a fast sweep of the optical source frequency. This method makes it possible to reduce the influence of environmental perturbation, which is the dominant factor degrading the spatial resolution of frequency-domain reflectometry at a long measurement range after compensation of the optical source phase noise. By using this approach, we realize a sub-cm spatial resolution over 40 km in a normal laboratory environment, and a 5 cm spatial resolution at 39.2 km in a field trial.

Abstract:A method of measuring distributed strain over 25 km in single-mode fiber with a high sensitivity is presented in this paper. By eliminating the laser phase noise, 2.5-m spatial resolution and 58-nε strain resolution are achieved.

Abstract:We show that the performance of phase-noise-compensated optical-frequency-domain reflectometry (PNC-OFDR) is affected by the acoustic phase noise caused by environmental acoustic perturbations applied to test fibers. When both the auxiliary interferometer and the fiber under test are insulated against acoustic perturbation, the theoretical spatial resolution is obtained. This means that a laser-induced phase noise compensation scheme with a concatenative reference method (CRM) works almost ideally and eliminates the phase noise even over a 40-km range, with 16-fold concatenation. We also reveal that even when we use a laser with a very narrow linewidth of a few kHz, the phase noise of the laser remains a dominant factor in performance degradation, and the CRM works effectively over the range. Test results for an actual fiber cable installed in underground show that there was no severe degradation in performance, and that PNC-OFDR sustained its unique high resolution in actual field use.

Abstract:We show that fading noise in phase-noise compensated optical frequency domain reflectometry (PNC-OFDR) can be effectively reduced by applying an optical comb light source without any degradation in the reflectometry performance. The optical comb light source provides broad wavelength tunability, which is required for the frequency shift averaging (FSAV) for fading noise reduction while maintaining a narrow linewidth of the fiber laser used as a seed lightwave. We also clarify that PNC-OFDR with a reference interferometer simultaneously compensates for both phase noise and group velocity dispersion (GVD) induced by wideband measurement and a dispersive medium. These PNC-OFDR functions enable us to realize a high accuracy measurement of Rayleigh scattering level with low fading noise and high spatial resolution over 10 km range.

Abstract:A hardware-adaptive algorithm is proposed for phase-noise-compensated optical frequency domain reflectometry (PNC-OFDR) and the corresponding hardware system is designed to realize the real-time processing. The system not only keeps a high measurement performance with spatial resolution and measurement range of traditional PNC-OFDR, but also improves the processing efficiency, which was the main drawback in traditional PNC-OFDR. In the proof-of-concept experiment, a 7-cm spatial resolution is achieved over 100-km fiber link, which is much beyond the laser coherence length. By theoretical analysis, even at the “worst compensation point,” the signal-to-niose ratio is almost 40 dB. In the hardware-processing based system, a 7-cm spatial resolution is achieved over 37.5-km fiber link, in which the limited range is restricted by the register capacity available in the hardware we used. We believe the system is suitable for practical applications because of the real-time processing capability.

Abstract:We show that the noise of long range optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) after compensating for the phase noise of the optical source results from environmental acoustic perturbation rather than the compensation process. If both the auxiliary and measurement interferometers are insulated against acoustic noise, the phase noise compensation scheme works almost ideally even over a 20-km range, with at least eight-fold concatenation. Although the spatial resolution achieved by phase-noise compensated OFDR (PNC-OFDR) is influenced by the environmental acoustic perturbation, a resolution of ~10 cm was achieved over 20 km in a normal laboratory environment by insulating the auxiliary interferometer. This approach can be used for mid to long range network diagnosis with a narrow spatial resolution, which is unachievable with other technologies.

Abstract:Highly sensitive reflectometry over 20 km with a sub-meter spatial resolution based on phase noise compensated optical frequency domain reflectometry and the concatenative reference method is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. A fiber laser is used as a light source to extend he measurement range although the distance remains limited to the laser coherence length because of the existence of laser phase noise. To reduce the influence of laser phase noise, the measurement signal is compensated using reference signals generated from a single auxiliary interferometer supported by a newly developed compensation process. By using the proposed technique, the measurement range is extended to 20 km with a sub-meter resolution and a sensitivity (relative to the Rayleigh backscattering level) of about -30 dB, which is nearly impossible to realize with the OTDR technique. The entire measurement time is 20 ms and the processing time is 20 s for each section.

Abstract:Fiber deformation measurement is crucial in the structure health monitor, which reflects the stress, strain or deformation of the structure where the fiber is laid. The principle of the fiber deformation measurement by the optical phase tracking in OFDR scheme is described and the data processing algorithm is demonstrated in details to receive accurate results. The differential phase is acquired by making a difference between the phase spectrum of the reference and measurement states. A robust phase unwrapping method based on the density distribution is proposed to get the whole unwrapped low-noise phase of the fiber. Additionally, the phase decoherence caused by the scatter unit misalignment induced by the fiber deformation is analyzed and the phase correction method is proposed to improve the phase coherence. The fiber deformation can be tracked along the fiber with a resolution of tens of microns, depending on the set parameters of the OFDR system. Moreover, the strain distribution is also derived from the differential phase. In the experiments, the measurements of the standard single-mode fiber with uniform and non-uniform deformation have been accomplished in a spatial resolution of 40 mu m. The noise is about 0.1 mu m in a stretching range of about 40 mu m. Simultaneously, hundreds of microstrain are obtained and show a high accuracy with a resolution of the level of millimeter.

Abstract:A high-sensitivity and high-spatial-resolution distributed acoustic sensor based on phase-sensitive optical frequency domain reflectometry ( Φ -OFDR) is proposed. The vibration information is retrieved from the phase change of the complex Rayleigh backscattering. Inner-pulse division and rotating-vector-sum methods are employed to overcome the fading problem and to suppress the crosstalk along the fiber. For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, the waveforms of two simultaneous kilohertz-level vibrations along a 950 m fiber are recovered thanks to the enhanced crosstalk suppression ratio. The spatial resolution of 12 cm and strain resolution of 1 n ε / H z are experimentally achieved.

Abstract:A novel time-gated digital optical frequency domain reflectometry (TGD-OFDR) technique with high spatial resolution over long measurement range is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. To solve the contradictory between the tuning rate of lightwave frequency, which determines the spatial resolution, and the measurable distance range in traditional OFDR, our proposed scheme sweeps the frequency of probe beam only within a time window, while the local reference remains a frequency-stable continuous lightwave. The frequency-to-distance mapping is digitally realized with equivalent references in data domain. In demonstrational experiments, a 1.6-m spatial resolution is obtained over an entire 110-km long fiber link, proving that the phase noises of the laser source as well as environmental perturbations are well suppressed. Meanwhile, the dynamic range was 26 dB with an average of only 373 measurements. The proposed reflectometry provides a simple-structure and high-performance solution for the applications where both high spatial resolution and long distance range are required.

Abstract:We demonstrate a novel method to compensate the optical source phase noise in long-range OFDR by using an optical fiber delay loop (OFDL). In this method, a 10 km OFDL is incorporated in the reference interferometer of the reflectometry. A frequency shifter is used to count the circulation rounds of the light traveling in OFDL. The preliminary "proof-of-concept" experiment shows a successful compensation effect and an 11 cm spatial resolution over 20 km measurement range is realized by this method.
Long-range fiber-optic earthquake sensing by active phase noise cancellation

Abstract:We present a long-range fiber-optic environmental deformation sensor based on active phase noise cancellation (PNC) in metrological frequency dissemination. PNC sensing exploits recordings of a compensation frequency that is commonly discarded. Without the need for dedicated measurement devices, it operates synchronously with metrological services, suggesting that existing phase-stabilized metrological networks can be co-used effortlessly as environmental sensors. The compatibility of PNC sensing with inline amplification enables the interrogation of cables with lengths beyond 1000 km, making it a potential contributor to earthquake detection and early warning in the oceans. Using spectral-element wavefield simulations that accurately account for complex cable geometry, we compare observed and computed recordings of the compensation frequency for a magnitude 3.9 earthquake in south-eastern France and a 123 km fiber link between Bern and Basel, Switzerland. The match in both phase and amplitude indicates that PNC sensing can be used quantitatively, for example, in earthquake detection and characterization.

Abstract:Photon counting optical time-domain reflectometry (PC-OTDR) based on the single photon detection is an effective scheme to attain the high spatial resolution for optical fiber fault monitoring. Currently, due to the spatial resolution of PC-OTDR is proportional to the pulse width of a laser beam, short laser pulses are essential for the high spatial resolution. However, short laser pulses have a large bandwidth, which would be widened by the dispersion of fiber, thereby causing inevitable deterioration in spatial resolution, especially for long-haul fiber links. In this letter, we propose a scheme of dispersion independent PC-OTDR based on an infinite backscatter technique. Our experimental results -with more than 50 km long fiber - show that the spatial resolution of the PC-OTDR system is independent with the total dispersion of the fiber under test. Our method provides an avenue for developing the long-haul PC-OTDR with high performance.
