Abstract:We present a bandwidth-division phase-noise-compensated optical frequency domain reflectometry (PNC-OFDR) technique, which permits a fast sweep of the optical source frequency. This method makes it possible to reduce the influence of environmental perturbation, which is the dominant factor degrading the spatial resolution of frequency-domain reflectometry at a long measurement range after compensation of the optical source phase noise. By using this approach, we realize a sub-cm spatial resolution over 40 km in a normal laboratory environment, and a 5 cm spatial resolution at 39.2 km in a field trial.

Abstract:Highly sensitive reflectometry over 20 km with a sub-meter spatial resolution based on phase noise compensated optical frequency domain reflectometry and the concatenative reference method is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. A fiber laser is used as a light source to extend he measurement range although the distance remains limited to the laser coherence length because of the existence of laser phase noise. To reduce the influence of laser phase noise, the measurement signal is compensated using reference signals generated from a single auxiliary interferometer supported by a newly developed compensation process. By using the proposed technique, the measurement range is extended to 20 km with a sub-meter resolution and a sensitivity (relative to the Rayleigh backscattering level) of about -30 dB, which is nearly impossible to realize with the OTDR technique. The entire measurement time is 20 ms and the processing time is 20 s for each section.

Abstract:This paper describes coherent optical frequency domain reflectometry (C-OFDR) with cm-level spatial resolution over 5 km. We propose the use of a single sideband with a suppressed carrier (SSB-SC) modulator and a narrow linewidth fiber laser as a tunable light source for C-OFDR. The advantage of using SSB-SC modulation is clarified theoretically by comparison with a double sideband with suppressed carrier modulation. We achieved cm-level spatial resolution over a 5-km measurement range and high sensitivity with a noise level 30 dB lower than the Rayleigh backscattering level.

Abstract:We show that the noise of long range optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) after compensating for the phase noise of the optical source results from environmental acoustic perturbation rather than the compensation process. If both the auxiliary and measurement interferometers are insulated against acoustic noise, the phase noise compensation scheme works almost ideally even over a 20-km range, with at least eight-fold concatenation. Although the spatial resolution achieved by phase-noise compensated OFDR (PNC-OFDR) is influenced by the environmental acoustic perturbation, a resolution of ~10 cm was achieved over 20 km in a normal laboratory environment by insulating the auxiliary interferometer. This approach can be used for mid to long range network diagnosis with a narrow spatial resolution, which is unachievable with other technologies.

Abstract:We report on an ultra-long range optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) using a coherence-enhanced highly linear frequency-swept fiber laser source based on an optoelectronic phase-locked loop (OPLL). The frequency-swept fiber laser is locked to an all-fiber-based Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) to suppress sweep nonlinearity and enhance the laser coherence, leading to a high coherence linear frequency sweep of 1 GHz in the duration time of 25 ms. This enables the OFDR to realize an ultra-long range measurement with a high spatial resolution. As a result, we obtain a 10 cm transform-limited spatial resolution at a 20 km fiber within 25 ms measurement time, and a 72 cm spatial resolution over an entire 200 km fiber link within 5 ms measurement time. The proposed reflectometry provides a high-performance solution with both high spatial resolution and ultra-long measurement range for field real-time fiber network monitoring and sensing applications.

Abstract:A novel type of optical frequency domain reflectometry with a measurement range much longer than the laser coherence length is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. To reduce the influence of laser phase noise, the measurement signal is compensated by using reference signals generated from a single auxiliary interferometer supported by a newly proposed compensation process. The compensation is accomplished numerically with a computer for each section of the delay fiber length in an auxiliary interferometer after only one data acquisition. Abstract:A novel approach to realize long-range distributed temperature and strain measurement with high spatial resolution, as well as high temperature and strain resolution, is proposed based on optical frequency-domain reflectometry (OFDR). To maintain the high measurement resolution and accuracy while increasing the sensing length, an optimized nonlinearity compensation algorithm is implemented to ensure a large wavelength tuning range. The compensated OFDR trace exhibits improved sensing resolution at a short distance, and the spatial resolution gradually deteriorates at the far end due to accumulated phase noise induced by fast tuning of the laser wavelength. We demonstrated the spatial resolution of 0.3 mm over a single-mode fiber sensing length of over 300 m, and temperature and strain resolution of 0.7 °C and 2.3 με with spatial resolution of up to 7 cm, respectively.

Abstract:Optical coherent domain reflectometry (OCDR) can achieve a high spatial resolution that is independent of the bandwidth of the receiver, but the measurement range is usually very limited. Here we propose an external modulation OCDR system, in which a pair of linear frequency-modulated pulses generated by one modulator are employed as the probe pulse and the reference, respectively. The spatial resolution is determined by the frequency modulation range of the pulse, and the measurement speed is boosted by orders because the proposed technology can simultaneously diagnose a section of fiber with each pair of pulses, while only a single point can be accessed at a time in typical OCDR. In the demonstrational experiment, a measurement range of up to 50 km is achieved with a spatial resolution of 1.4 m and a measuring time of less than 30 s.

Abstract:In this invited talk, three advanced methods to improve both the spatial resolution and the measurement range are presented which paves the way for new horizons in high-end applications. The first one is to develop an optical source with ultra-highly-linear frequency sweeping rate, and use it for optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR). The second one is to use linear optical sampling (LOS) technique to measure ultra-short pulse used for optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) and adopt dispersion compensation scheme. The third one is to use LOS technique for characterizing the ultra-wide linearly chirped signals for pulse compression.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a millimeter-resolution long-range optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) using an ultra-linearly 100-GHz swept optical source realized by injection-locking technique and cascaded four-wave-mixing (FWM) process. The ultra-linear sweep is realized using an external modulation method with a linearly swept radio frequency (RF) signal. The RF signal sweeps from 16 GHz to 19.3 GHz, and the slave laser is injection-locked to the 8th-order sideband of the master laser, achieving a frequency sweeping span of similar to 25 GHz. By using the injection-locked frequencyswept laser as the optical source of OFDR, we obtain a spatial resolution of 4.2 mm over 10km measurement range. A polarization beat length of 10.5 cm is measured benefiting from the high spatial resolution. To improve the spatial resolution further, FWM process is used to broaden the frequency sweeping span. Frequency sweeping span of similar to 100 GHz is achieved with cascaded FWM. We demonstrate a 1.1-mm spatial resolution over 2-km measurement range with the proposed ultra-linearly swept optical source.
