Abstract:An optical frequency-domain reflectometry (OFDR) based on non-tunable laser is presented in this article. Instead, a common narrow-linewidth laser modulated by an external phase modulator is used for source. By swiftly changing the modulation frequency thus sweeping the frequency of modulated light, the linear chirp probe light needed in OFDR can be made. Comparing to the common tunable laser, this external modulation scheme has a better repeatability. The corresponding experimental system is constructed to verify the system performance, and the detection distance is longer than 4km. Firstly, the end and junction reflection of the optical fiber at 4.1km was detected. Secondly, 30kHz vibration signal is detected at this position. Finally, the stress near this position is detected.

Abstract:In this study, a long-distance optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) with high spatial resolution based on time division multiplexing is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Distributed strain sensing with high spatial resolution over long sensing range can be realized by reconfiguring the system layout in a time-division-multiplexed manner by re-routing the measurement signals for segmented processing with extra circulators and couplers only, rather than any other mechanisms for performance improvement of laser source or algorithms for nonlinear errors compensation. Through time-division-multiplexed reconfiguration, the sensing distance is no longer restricted by the path difference of the auxiliary interferometer which is commonly employed in OFDR systems for compensating laser frequency tuning nonlinearity. Compared with the traditional system layout, the proposed system allows distributed measurement with flexible spatial resolutions in each sub-sensing unit without any crosstalk among them. In experiments, distributed strain sensing with spatial resolution up to 5mm is achieved over an active sensing distance of 225m by the proposed system. Furthermore, the spatial resolution flexibility of the proposed system is further verified by successfully obtaining the strain information with 2 mm spatial resolution at the end of a 235-m-long fiber.

Abstract:A novel approach to realize long-range distributed temperature and strain measurement with high spatial resolution, as well as high temperature and strain resolution, is proposed based on optical frequency-domain reflectometry (OFDR). To maintain the high measurement resolution and accuracy while increasing the sensing length, an optimized nonlinearity compensation algorithm is implemented to ensure a large wavelength tuning range. The compensated OFDR trace exhibits improved sensing resolution at a short distance, and the spatial resolution gradually deteriorates at the far end due to accumulated phase noise induced by fast tuning of the laser wavelength. We demonstrated the spatial resolution of 0.3 mm over a single-mode fiber sensing length of over 300 m, and temperature and strain resolution of 0.7 °C and 2.3 με with spatial resolution of up to 7 cm, respectively.

Abstract:We report on a dynamic range enhanced optical frequency domain reflectometry distributed backscattering interrogator based on dual-loop composite optical phase-locked loop (OPLL). Exploiting simultaneously an acousto-optic frequency shifter based an external modulation loop and a piezo based direct modulation loop, the proposed composite OPLL allows offering a larger loop bandwidth and gain, permitting a more efficient coherence enhancement as well as sweep linearization. A high fidelity frequency sweep of ${rm{sim}} text{8.2 GHz}$ at ${text{164 GHz/s}}$ sweep rate is generated with a peak-to-peak frequency error as low as ${rm{sim}} text{120 kHz}$. It leads to a dynamic range enhancement of more than ${text{3 dB}}$ for the measured power loss compared to the case when only piezo loop is applied. This corresponds to ${rm{sim}} text{15 km}$ extension for the measurement range of Rayleigh backscattering without any spatial resolution penalties. Fourier transform-limited spatial resolution has been demonstrated at a range window more than about $text{28}$ times of the intrinsic coherence length of the adopted fiber laser. The proposed method provides a straightforward optimization of the real-time sweep control and is expected to be a useful tool in industrial and commercial applications.

Abstract:A high-spatial-resolution optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) with single interferometer was proposed by using self-compensation method (SCM). The auxiliary interferometer (AI) of conventional OFDR was replaced by a processed arc end of the fiber under test (FUT) to generate a reflection signal with appropriate intensity. The actual instantaneous optical frequency (IOF) was successfully extracted from the arc end of the FUT. Combining the arc end and SCM, the phase noise of the proposed OFDR was successfully eliminated to obtain the compensated signal with high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Moreover, the influence of delay fiber (DF) length on the compensation effect was theoretically and experimentally analyzed. The proposed OFDR achieved the distributed temperature sensing with a high-spatial-resolution of 3 mm without sacrificing measurement performance, where the measured distance of the FUT was ∼ 108 m. The high-spatial-resolution of 5 mm was still achieved when the measured distance of the FUT was increased to ∼170 m. Such an OFDR system with low cost and good performance has development potential in the field of distributed measurement.

Abstract:Optical frequency domain reflectometry is a suitable and promising measurement technique for optical network components characterization; however its performance is severely limited by sweep nonlinearity of the laser chirp. We demonstrate precise linearization of broadband optical frequency chirp using optoelectronic feedback loop. The sweep rate and the laser chirp shape is locked to and determined by the frequency of a reference electronic signal, an agile, high coherence swept-frequency semiconductor laser source with a bandwidth of 66GHz in 100ms is achieved. The laser source is applied to a coherent optical frequency domain reflectometry; a transform-limited spatial resolution of 1.5mm at a distance of 200 meters is demonstrated.

Abstract:A novel fiber optical reflectometry is proposed for long distance measurements and sensing applications. The reflectrometric information is included in the phase difference of two interfering light beams reflected at the same scattering point on the fiber under test (FUT). The reflection position and local information can be determined by modulating the frequency difference and analyzing the reflecting signal in frequency domain. Theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration are presented. Two adjacent reflection points 50 km away from the reflectometry with a gap of 11 meters between each other is distinguished. It is estimated that the operating range could be over 500 km theoretically by employing a light source with 0.3 nm bandwidth. This novel reflectometry is applied as a fiber Bragg grating interrogation solution as an example.

Abstract:We have proposed and demonstrated a novel optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) incorporating an electron-optic modulator (EOM) for fiber length and chromatic dispersion measurement. The fiber length and chromatic information can be obtained by analyzing the phase difference of two interference beams in frequency domain. Two reflection points with a distance of 7 m at the end of the fiber under test (FUT) 60 km away was well distinguished and the chromatic dispersion is successfully measured at C-band.

Abstract:Rayleigh scattering-based distributed optical fiber sensors with long sensing distance and large dynamic range are highly desired for application scenarios such as vehicle tracking, structure health monitoring, and geological survey. To enlarge the dynamic range, we propose a coherent optical time domain reflectometry (COTDR) based on double-sideband linear frequency modulation (LFM) pulse. By utilizing I/Q demodulation, both the positive and negative frequency band of the Rayleigh backscattering (RBS) signal can be properly demodulated. Consequently, the dynamic range is doubled without increasing the bandwidth of signal generator, photodetector (PD), and oscilloscope. In the experiment, the chirped pulse with 10 μs pulse width and 498 MHz frequency sweeping range is launched into the sensing fiber. Single-shot strain measurement is achieved over 5 km single-mode fiber with a spatial resolution of 2.5 m and a strain sensitivity of 7.5 pε/<i>H</i> <i>z</i>. A vibration signal with 3.09 με peak-to-peak amplitude (corresponding to 461 MHz frequency shift) is successfully measured with the double-sideband spectrum, which cannot be properly recovered with the single-sideband spectrum.

Abstract:We report on the generation of a highly coherent broadband optical linear frequency sweep (LFS) using mode-spacing swept comb and multi-loop composite optical phase-locked loop (OPLL). We exploit a specially designed agile opto-electronic frequency comb as a sweeping reference, whose mode-spacing is capable of arbitrary frequency sweep while preserving a stable phase and power distribution per mode. By locking a continuous-wave (CW) laser to any of its modes using composite OPLL with a large loop bandwidth, it allows the extraction of the optical LFS at high-order modes in a coherent manner with a multiplied sweep range and rate. With such capability, only intermediate frequency LFS with smaller bandwidth is required to yield a broadband LFS while inheriting the coherence and precision from the comb. We achieve optical LFS of 60 GHz at 6 THz/s sweep rate with a nine-folded sweep bandwidth of the driving signal. Fourier transform-limited spatial resolution at more than 80 times of the intrinsic coherence length of the CW laser is demonstrated in an OFMCW interferometry, verifying the high coherence with more than 4 orders of magnitude improvement in spatial resolution. The characteristics in terms of agility, coherence, and precision are discussed together with the potential limitations. The proposed method is capable of generating arbitrary frequency-modulated optical waveforms with a multiplied bandwidth, showing attractive potential in future metrology applications.

Abstract:The phase cross-correlation function of an optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR) system is proposed to detect a multi-point vibration event, which is verified in detail by theoretical simulation and experiment. An OFDR system based on a non-tunable laser source with digital sweep frequency is developed. It is verified experimentally that the location and frequency resolution of multi-point high-frequency vibration can be detected by analyzing the phase cross-correlation function of the sensing signal. High-frequency signals of 50 kHz and 20 kHz are located and separated on the 8 km optical fiber. The frequency resolution is 1.26 kHz, and the minimum spatial error is 11.5 m.

Abstract:We demonstrate efficient coherence enhancement of a chirped distributed feedback (DFB) laser for frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) reflectometry. Both sweep nonlinearity and broadband stochastic frequency noises during the laser chirp are efficiently suppressed by a composite feedback loop. The residual frequency error relative to a perfect linear chirp is shown to be about 89 kHz for a laser chirp of 50 GHz in 100 ms, compared with 44 MHz with the loop open. The broadband frequency noise suppression of the frequency-swept laser greatly improves its coherence, leading to a higher signal-to-noise ratio and a significantly extended measurement range in FMCW reflectometry ranging. We demonstrate a 2 mm transform-limited spatial resolution at a range window of 50 m and a 17.5 cm spatial resolution at an extended measurement range of 750 m, which is about 15 times the intrinsic laser round-trip coherence length.

Abstract:Distributed optical fiber sensing based on optical frequency domain reflectometers is a promising technology to achieve high-density sensing information in harsh environments. Aiming at the major influence factor on robustness due to degradation of the similarity or correlation degree (SCD) between the reference and measurement spectra, in this letter, high-orders residual sampling error of nonlinearly swept laser source is found to cause random position deviations besides accumulated compensation based on thermal-/elastic-optic effect, and a local search and dynamic prediction method based on Kalman filter is proposed for position matching reference and measurement sensing gauges. Through this method, SCD can be improved when the accumulated compensation is invalid. Experiments indicate that a wide measurement range (highest temperature of ~ 450 °C and largest strain of $\sim 10~000~\mu \varepsilon$ ) under a spatial resolution of 5 mm, as well as high robustness and high accuracy, can be achieved along a 50-meter-long fiber under test. Besides, the computation amount can be reduced to 1/3.5 ~ 1/17.2. The advantages of this method include high robustness, wide measurement range, high processing rate, and excellent applicability with current OFDR systems.

Abstract:This article reports an effective, robust, and universal estimating method to enhance and maintain the measuring accuracy for the semiconductor laser (SCL)-based optical frequency-domain reflectometry (OFDR) by estimating the reflecting locations. The core is to build the bridge between the limited data sampling rate and almost continued real values, providing the potential strategy for high-resolution fiber sensing without the modulated optical fibers. The experiments demonstrate that the described method can be effectively applied to a range of applicating areas, resulting in the millimeter-level optical fiber subset identifying with an error equal rate (EER) of less than 1%.

Abstract:We report on a versatile optical frequency-modulated continuous-wave interferometry technique that exploits wideband phase locking for generating highly coherent linear laser frequency chirps. This technique is based on an ultra-short delay-unbalanced interferometer, which leads to a large bandwidth, short lock time, and robust operation even in the absence of any isolation from environmental perturbations. In combination with a digital delay-matched phase error compensation, this permits the achievement of a range window about 60 times larger than the intrinsic laser coherence length with a 1.25 mm Fourier transform-limited spatial resolution. The demonstrated configuration can be easily applied to virtually any semiconductor laser.

Abstract:Phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) is often required in many large-scale monitoring applications. However, the frequency response of the system is restricted by the round-trip time transmitted along the sensing fiber. In this article, we propose a new system which can realize ultrasound sensing with a very long sensing distance. The new system uses a weak reflector array as the sensing part to realize a quasi-distributed measurement. An orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) method is used to multiplex multiple probe pulses into one interrogating period. This method has a high spectrum utilization efficiency of the transmission bandwidth. Vernier effect is also used to detect the frequency higher than the repetition rate of the probe pulses. With the combination of these two proposed methods, a quasi-distributed measurement of ultrasound signal with a response frequency up to 25 kHz can be realized with a very long sensing distance up to 51 km.
