Abstract:We describe the characterization of a monolithically integrated photonic device for short pulse generation featuring a mode-locked laser diode, a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM), and a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The integrated device is designed for fabrication by a generic foundry scheme with a view to ease of design, testing, and manufacture. Trains of 6.8 ps pulses are generated at repetition rates that are electronically switchable from 14 GHz to 109 MHz. The SOA boosts the peak power by 7.4 dB, and the pulses are compressible to 2.4 ps by dispersion compensation using single-mode telecommunications fiber.

Abstract:Compact and integrated optical pulse generation with a high repetition rate and a small duty cycle can benefit various applications such as integrated microwave photonics. In this work, a method to generate a repetition-frequency-doubled narrow optical pulse train based on two cascaded silicon Mach Zehnder modulators is proposed and demonstrated. The generated frequency comb has even-order sidebands with linear phase and suppressed odd-order sidebands, which results in the transform-limited pulses in the time domain. The tunability of the repetition rate from 4.0 to 6.6 GHz and the duty cycle from 10.6% to 14.0% has been achieved. An analytic model that considers the non-ideal properties of the silicon modulators is also established and is able to reproduce the key features in the experiment. Our work shows the potential of an integrated silicon chip to generate high-speed optical pulse trains with tunable duty cycles demanded in integrated microwave photonics and integrated photonic signal processing.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrated a hybrid master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) laser with high peak power and widely tunable pulse repetition frequency (PRF) and pulse duration. The first-stage solid-state amplifier was carefully designed to keep good beam quality and supply high gain simultaneously. The maximum peak power of 760 kW was achieved with average power of 42 W, PRF of 50 kHz, pulse duration of 1.1 ns, and near-diffraction limited beam quality. The MOPA laser covers a broad tunable temporal range with 1-100 ns for pulse duration and 50 kHz-1MHz for PRF. Moreover, we experimentally and numerically figure out that Nd: YVO4 crystal behaves as if continuous-wave (CW) amplification takes place when PRF is larger than 30 kHz. Abstract:A passive mode-locked fiber laser-delivered 13 ps pulse is saturatedly amplified with a four-stage amplifier chain. 125 W high power all-fiber picoseconds pulse laser is demonstrated in a 15-μm fiber core, and the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of the main amplifier is up to 86.12 %. A home-made (6 + 1) × 1 fiber combiner is used to couple the pump light and signal light into the gain double cladding fiber. In order to suppress the nonlinear effects in high-power picosecond fiber amplifiers, the repetition rate of the seed pulse is increased from 60 MHz to ~1 GHz; also the gain fibers are advisably selected. The amplified output spectrum is symmetrically broadened to several nanometers due to self-phase modulation (SPM). No stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and residual pump light are observed and the optical signal-to-noise ratio is more than 30 dB. The all-fiber picoseconds MOPA laser in this report can be easily performed with the conventional fiber handing equipments, and it has great potential to be applied as pump source in the fields of optical parametric oscillator, laser frequency-doubling and supercontinuum generation.

Abstract:A pulsed fiber master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA), which is combined with second harmonic generation (SHG) and modulated by directly changing the current of the low-power seed laser, is designed in this paper to overcome the 'green gap' of semiconductor lasers and the difficulty of obtaining high-power and wide-bandwidth driving circuits. To decrease the guard slot and increase the data rate of a high-order pulse position modulation (PPM) system, pre-pulse shaping (PPS) is utilized to decrease the fluctuation of pulse power, which is caused by the gain dynamics of multi-order amplification of the MOPA, from 55.6% to 27.5% for 25-ns pulses and from 22.4% to 16.7% for 10-ns pulses, respectively. Moreover, an analog PPM demodulation method is proposed to mitigate the nonlinear effect caused by space charge limitations at dynodes of a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and increase the robustness of the system. In an optical darkroom, a 99-m 64-PPM UWOC transmission, of which the measured link loss is around 13.16 attenuation length (AL), is realized in a water tank with a data rate of 9.14 Mbps. The average received optical power ranges from -60.87 to -52.51 dBm, corresponding to a bit error rate (BER) range of 1.93 x 10(-4) to 2.3 x 10(-3). To further prove the reliability of the proposed system, we implement a 65-m UWOC experiment with the same data rate at a BER of 3.42 x 10(-4) in a 50-m standard swimming pool. Abstract:A laser system capable of offering double single-frequency pulses based on a hybrid master oscillator power amplifier structure is presented. Combining the advantages of all-fiber amplifier, bulk-amplifier-chain of Nd:YVO4 and Nd:YAG, this novel design is capable of providing a pair of nanosecond laser pulses at 1064 nm wavelength with a temporal interval of 200 μs. Approximately 13 mJ of output pulse energy is recorded at a repetition rate of 30 Hz. The pulse width is around 20 ns and the spectrum linewidth is 34.1 MHz. The beam quality factor M2 of output radiation is less than 1.30.

Abstract:An arbitrary pulse shape by compensating gain saturation in a solid-state Master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) system made up of three Neodymium doped yttrium vanadate (Nd:YVO4) amplifiers is demonstrated. By investigating the amplifier dynamics in detail, car-shaped pulse shapes were obtained with compensated pulse distortion. Desired pulse shapes, such as multiple-step, square, parabolic, and Gaussian pulses, were achieved, with a high peak power level of 41.6 kW and a narrow linewidth less than 0.06 nm. In addition, through second harmonic generation (SHG), a green laser with different pulse shapes was obtained, with a maximum conversion efficiency of 42.6%.

Abstract:A stable, 2.09 μm single-frequency Ho:YAG master oscillator and power amplifier (MOPA) system at a pulse repetition frequency of 1.25 kHz is demonstrated. The maximum output energy of the single-frequency injection-seeded laser is 13.76 mJ, and the corresponding pulse width is 178.9 ns. The seed laser is a continuous-wave Ho:YAG non-planar ring oscillator laser. The half-width of the pulse spectrum is measured to be 2.65 MHz by using the heterodyne technique, which is about 1.06 times Fourier transform limited.

Abstract:We have for the first time experimentally demonstrated a high repetition-rate picosecond fiber laser source at 2 mu m by a spectrally masked phase modulation technique, where a phase modulator driven by a sinusoidal RF signal and a fiber Bragg grating are used to convert the output of a 2-mu m continuous-wave single-longitudinal-mode diode to a picosecond pulse train. The repetition-rate of this laser source can be continuously and flexibly tuned from 1 to 6 GHz by simply changing the RF signal. We achieved a shortest pulse width of similar to 60 ps and a high SNR of >75 dB at an operating frequency of 6 GHz. The simplicity and robustness of such a picosecond laser as well as the ability to synchronize with an external trigger make it a highly useful source for 2-mu m high speed optical data processing, communications, and metrology.

Abstract:Mode-locked lasers (MLLs) generate ultrashort pulses with peak powers substantially exceeding their average powers. However, integrated MLLs that drive ultrafast nanophotonic circuits have remained elusive because of their typically low peak powers, lack of controllability, and challenges when integrating with nanophotonic platforms. In this work, we demonstrate an electrically pumped actively MLL in nanophotonic lithium niobate based on its hybrid integration with a III-V semiconductor optical amplifier. Our MLL generates ∼ 4.8-ps optical pulses around 1065 nm at a repetition rate of ∼10 GHz, with energies exceeding 2.6 pJ and peak powers beyond 0.5 W. The repetition rate and the carrier-envelope offset frequency of the output can be controlled in a wide range by using the driving frequency and the pump current, providing a route for fully stabilized on-chip frequency combs.

Abstract:Mode-locked lasers (MLLs) have enabled ultrafast sciences and technologies by generating ultrashort pulses with peak powers substantially exceeding their average powers. Recently, tremendous efforts have been focused on realizing integrated MLLs not only to address the challenges associated with their size and power demand, but also to enable transforming the ultrafast technologies into nanophotonic chips, and ultimately to unlock their potential for a plethora of applications. However, till now the prospect of integrated MLLs driving ultrafast nanophotonic circuits has remained elusive because of their typically low peak powers, lack of controllability, and challenges with integration with appropriate nanophotonic platforms. Here, we overcome these limitations by demonstrating an electrically-pumped actively MLL in nanophotonic lithium niobate based on its hybrid integration with a III-V semiconductor optical amplifier. Our MLL generates $\sim$4.8 ps optical pulses around 1065 nm at a repetition rate of $\sim$10 GHz, with pulse energy exceeding 2.6 pJ and a high peak power beyond 0.5 W. We show that both the repetition rate and the carrier-envelope-offset of the resulting frequency comb can be flexibly controlled in a wide range using the RF driving frequency and the pump current, paving the way for fully-stabilized on-chip frequency combs in nanophotonics. Our work marks an important step toward fully-integrated nonlinear and ultrafast photonic systems in nanophotonic lithium niobate.

Abstract:We report the generation of high-peak-power picosecond optical pulses in the 1.55 μm spectral band from a monolithically mode-locked laser integrated with a pulse selector and power booster. High-peak-power (>1 W) pulses with durations of 15.4 ps at a 55 MHz selected rate are demonstrated, indicating that this device shows promise as a high-peak-power pulsed light source for bio-photonic applications.

Abstract:We recently experimentally demonstrated a high-power, high-repetition-rate mid-infrared (mid-IR) radiation at 4.0 mu m, based on the fiber-laser pumped optical-parametric-oscillator (OPO) configuration. To ensure the excellent characteristics of the OPO output, the master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) structure fiber laser was developed as the pump source and the homemade periodically poled magnesium-oxide-doped lithium niobate (PPMgLN) crystal (60 mm in length) was employed in the oscillator. Under the pump power of 18.5 W, the maximum 2.03 W average power of 4.0 mu m idler laser was finally achieved at a high repetition rate of 200 kHz. Abstract:We report on an environmentally stable mode-locked all polarization maintaining fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) at a ultralow repetition rate. Experimentally, using different cavity lengths we have achieved stable mode-locking at different repetition rates. By carefully adjusting the length of the total fiber of NALM, we achieve stable broadband pulse trains with a repetition rate as low as 140 kHz. The pulses can be further amplified up to 27 mu J and compressed down to 1.16 ps. The laser system has potential application for industrial application.

Abstract:A compact frequency-doubled diode-pumped Nd:YAG master-oscillator power-amplifier laser system with programmable microsecond pulse length has been developed. Analog pulse shaping of the output from a single-frequency continuous-wave Nd:YAG oscillator, and subsequent amplification, allowed the generation of rectangular pulses with pulse lengths on the order of the Nd:YAG fluorescence lifetime. Temporally flat-top pulses of 1064 nm light with 520 mJ pulse energy, 2.6 kW peak power, and 200 $\mu$s duration, with linewidth below 10 kHz, were obtained at a repetition rate of 2 Hz. Second harmonic generation in a LBO crystal yielded pulses of 262 mJ and 1.3 kW peak power at 532 nm. The peak power can be maintained within 2.9% over the duration of the laser pulse, and long-term intensity stability of 1.1% was observed. The spatially flat-top beam at 1064 nm used in the amplifier is converted to a Gaussian beam at 532 nm with beam quality factor $M^2=1.41(14)$ during the second harmonic generation. This system has potential as a pump source for Ti:sapphire, dye, or optical parametric amplifiers to generate tunable high-power single-frequency radiation for applications in precision measurements and laser slowing.

Abstract:We demonstrated the generation of narrow spectral bandwidth, high energy picosecond pulses from a low repetition rate SESAM mode-locked laser seeded Yb-doped fiber MOPA system. A short large mode field diameter gain fiber (DCF-30/250) was adopted to efficiently reduce the influence of nonlinear effects. The maximum pulse energy of 12.36 μJ, ∼60 ps pulses with a narrow bandwidth was obtained at a repetition rate of 5 MHz, corresponding to the peak power of 0.2 MW and average output power of 64 W. The optical-to-optical conversion efficiency was ∼64% in such a low repetition rate all-fiber laser design. The output pulse spectra and temporal trace of the MOPA system for different output powers was investigated by simulation. The simulation results were in agreement with experiment but further showed that the spectral splitting would occur as output power increased.
