Abstract:We propose a design for a hollow core photonic bandgap fiber (HC-PBF), with a quasi-elliptical core region stacked by modified periodic capillary tubes. This type of HC-PBF possesses birefringence > 4.6×10-4 in the wavelength range of 1.46-1.59 μm, and a low confinement loss of <; 0.02 dB/m, while maintaining single-mode operation.

Abstract:In this article, we proposed a hollow-core photonic crystal fiber (HCPCF) ring resonator based on a spatial coupling method, and the component is only 22 × 30 × 6 mm 3 . When using a 7-core photonic crystal fiber with a mode field diameter of 10um, a ring resonator with the measured finesse of 18 can be built, indicating that the coupling loss is as low as 0.41 dB. Compact and low-loss closed resonator is accomplished using a highly integrated free space silicon optical bench manufactured by deep silicon etching and tiny optical lens package technology, which promotes the practicality of the HCPCF gyro. In addition, two important factors affecting the spatial optical coupling efficiency, the lens type and the fiber mode field size, are investigated in this article. The obtained results are instructive for all spatial optical coupling systems.

Abstract:Hollow‐core (HC) optical microcavities differ from conventional ones in that they can strongly confine light in air. HC cavities simultaneously possessing high air–energy ratios (αair), high quality factors (Q), and small mode volumes (Veff) may enable on‐chip low‐concentration molecular sensing, high optical power delivery or storage, and low‐threshold optical oscillation or lasing when filled with materials of desirable nonlinearities. However, designing and fabricating such cavities has been challenging, especially when using only a small number of layers. Here, the design and fabrication of such an HC cavity in a three‐layer silicon photonic crystal (PhC) is reported. It supports a transverse magnetic (TM) cavity mode with αair ≈ 67% and Q ≈ 1.7 × 105 in the 1550 nm wavelength range. The in‐plane confinement is provided by the 2D photonic bandgap (PBG) of a dielectric rod array, while a pair of capping slabs with air–hole PhC patterns confine light in air in the vertical direction. The cavity allows detection of low‐concentration substances that induce refractive index changes as small as around 8.8 × 10−6. The proposed cavity design and its fabrication provide a new approach to three‐dimensional photonic confinement using a structure consisting of only a few layers.

Abstract:We propose a novel porous-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) consisting of asymmetrical rectangular air holes in the core and six-ring hexagonal lattice circular air holes in the cladding for achieving low-loss polarization terahertz transmission in a wide frequency range. By assuming TOPAS as the host material, the finite element method (FEM) is used to investigate its properties. The near-zero flattened dispersion of −0.01±0.02 ps/THz/cm is achieved over a frequency range of 1.0–2.0 THz, as well as a high birefringence of 7.1 × 10<sup>−2</sup> which can be useful for polarization-maintaining applications. Also, critical parameters such as mode field distribution, effective material loss, confinement loss, and effective mode area are discussed in detail. Abstract:Photonic crystal nanobeam microcavities based on slot and hollow-core waveguides were proposed and analyzed. Three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations show that both an ultrasmall modal volume (V) and a high quality (Q) factor can be obtained simultaneously in hollow-core-nanobeam mirocavities (HCNMs) due to the strong confinement of fields in the two lateral directions. For a 6.5-mu m-long HCNM, the Q factor and V are on the order of 10(5) and 10(-2) (lambda/2n)(3), respectively. With compactness, lower fabrication requirements as well as ultrahigh Q/V, the proposed microcavities would be very promising in a variety of applications. (c) 2011 Optical Society of America
Fabrication of Optical Cavities with Femtosecond Laser Pulses

Abstract:We report on fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) high-quality (Q) whispering-gallery-mode microcavities by femtosecond laser micromachining. The main fabrication procedures include the formation of on-chip freestanding microdisk through selective material removal by femtosecond laser pulses, followed by surface smoothing processes (CO2 laser reflow for amorphous glass and focused ion beam (FIB) sidewall milling for crystalline materials) to improve the Q factors. Fused silica microcavities with 3D geometries are demonstrated with Q factors exceeding 106. A microcavity laser based on Nd:glass has been fabricated, showing a threshold as low as 69μW via free space continuous-wave optical excitation at the room temperature. CaF2 crystalline microcavities with Q factor of ~4.2×104 have also been demonstrated. This technique allows us to fabricate 3D high-Q microcavities in various transparent materials such as glass and crystals, which will benefit a broad spectrum of applications such as nonlinear optics, quantum optics, and bio-sensing.

Abstract:We investigate and simulate the light transmitting and coupling characteristics of surface mode waveguides (SMWs) based on photonic crystals (PhCs) with a triangular lattice of air holes. We demonstrate that surface waves can be efficiently propagated and served as a new kind of high-efficiency single-SMW-based filter with broad bandwidth in the outer space of PhCs. We also explore the highly efficient coupling of hetero-SMWs constructed by cascading different truncated surfaces. The coupling efficiency is insensitive to the interface position. Abstract:We demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities in silicon-on-insulator platform. Results show that repeatable devices achieve similar high loaded quality factors (>10(4)) and large optical energy ratio in low refractive region. The unload Q-factors of the fabricated cavities are estimated to exceed 10(5). With side-coupled configuration, high transmission of through port is achieved with typical insertion loss less than 0.5 dB. Wavelength shifts of the measured resonances with respect to the designed values are observed and well explained by considering the fluctuation of etching depth. The demonstrated side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities may find their applications in ultracompact integrated photonics, especially for on-chip photonic sensor, notch filter, or optical switch.

Abstract:We demonstrate experimentally a high-Q one-dimensional photonic crystal cavity in a widely-used 450 × 220nm single mode silicon ridge waveguide. Transmission spectrum measurement is performed by using the vertical fiber-grating coupling characterization method. The Q factor up to 2.6 × 104 is found by fitting the line shape of the transmission spectrum, and the normalized transmission of nearly 20% is achieved. Three-dimensional finite difference time domain calculations show that the modal volume of the fundamental mode is 1.1(λ/n)3. With the standard silicon waveguide width, the demonstrated 1D PhC cavity may be used as a building block for integrated photonic circuits and on-chip sensing applications.

Abstract:Over the past few years, much work has been devoted to the study of microcavities in photonic crystals (PCs). High-quality factor (Q) PC microcavities exhibit attractive properties since they can confine light in wavelength-scale dimensions, making them potentially useful not only for photonic integration but also in quantum optics. Most of the high-Q PC microcavities are realized in slabs (PCSs), which are two-dimensional (2D) PCs with a high refractive index core layer providing light confinement in the third dimension. The key to design high-Q cavities is to reduce the radiation losses, i.e., to minimize the spatial Fourier components above the light line of the PCS. This chapter will focus on high-Q PC microcavity, including design rules, characterization methods, device demonstrations, and applications.
An Improved Surface-Plasmonic Nanobeam Cavity for Higher Q and Smaller V

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-Q hybrid surface-plasmon-polariton-photonic crystal (SP3C) nanobeam cavity. The proposed cavities are analyzed numerically using the three-dimensional finite difference time domain (3D-FDTD) method. The results show that a Q-factor of 2076 and a modal volume V of 0.16(λ/2n)3 can be achieved in a 50 nm silica-gap hybrid SP3C nanobeam cavity when it operates at telecommunications wavelengths and at room temperature. V can be further reduced to 0.02(λ/2n)3 when the silica thickness decreases to 10 nm, which leads to a Q/V ratio that is 11 times that of the corresponding plasmonic-photonic nanobeam cavity (without silica). The ultrahigh Q/V ratio originates from the low-loss nature and deep sub-wavelength confinement of the hybrid plasmonic waveguide, as well as the mode gap effect used to reduce the radiation loss. The proposed structure is fully compatible with semiconductor fabrication techniques and could lead to a wide range of applications.

Abstract:Photonic crystal cavities enable the realization of high Q-factor and low mode-volume resonators, with typical architectures consisting of a thin suspended periodically-patterned layer to maximize confinement of light by strong index guiding. We investigate a heterostructure-based approach comprising a high refractive index core and lower refractive index cladding layers. Whilst confinement typically decreases with decreasing index contrast between the core and cladding layers, we show that, counter-intuitively, due to the confinement provided by the photonic band structure in the cladding layers, it becomes possible to achieve Q-factors $>10^4$ with only a small refractive index contrast. This opens up new opportunities for implementing high Q-factor cavities in conventional semiconductor heterostructures, with direct applications to the design of electrically-pumped nano-cavity lasers using conventional fabrication approaches.

Abstract:We present a novel and simple design of an air-slot mode-gap photonic crystal (PC) nanocavity by introducing a linear air slot to the center of a line-defect waveguide in a two dimensional triangular-lattice silicon PC slab. A high quality factor (Q factor) of 8.42×105 and an ultrasmall mode volume of 0.998 cubic wavelength are achieved in an optimized air-slot nanocavity which is a suitable choice for the strong matter-field interaction in free space. The high Q cavities with ultrasmall mode volume are important for applications such as quantum computation and nonlinear optics.

Abstract:We propose an ultrahigh quality factor (Q) photonic crystal slab cavity created by the local modulation of the air hole radius in the waveguide. In the cavity, photons are confined between two mirror regions with larger air holes and the lifetime of photons is greatly enhanced by introducing tapered regions with linearly increasing air hole radii. Q and mode volume are investigated for the cavities with various lengths and air hole size offsets of the tapered region with linearly increasing air hole radii by three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method. The behaviors are analyzed by the mode patterns in real space and wavevector space. We obtain a numerical Q up to 8.8 x 10(7) for a mode volume of 1.6 (lambda/n)(3). Concerning the waveguide coupling, the cavity shows 80% coupling efficiency while keeping Q higher than 10(6).

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the design of cavities in a three-dimensional (3D) inverse woodpile photonic crystal. This class of cubic diamond-like crystals has a very broad photonic band gap and consists of two perpendicular arrays of pores with a rectangular structure. The point defect that acts as a cavity is centred on the intersection of two intersecting perpendicular pores with a radius that differs from the ones in the bulk of the crystal. We have performed supercell bandstructure calculations with up to $5 \times 5 \times 5$ unit cells. We find that up to five isolated and dispersionless bands appear within the 3D photonic band gap. For each isolated band, the electric-field energy is localized in a volume centred on the point defect, hence the point defect acts as a 3D photonic band gap cavity. The mode volume of the cavities resonances is as small as 0.8 $\lambda^{3}$ (resonance wavelength cubed), indicating a strong confinement of the light. By varying the radius of the defect pores we found that only donor-like resonances appear for smaller defect radius, whereas no acceptor-like resonances appear for greater defect radius. From a 3D plot of the distribution of the electric-field energy density we conclude that peaks of energy found in sharp edges situated at the point defect, similar to how electrons collect at such features. This is different from what is observed for cavities in non-inverted woodpile structures. Since inverse woodpile crystals can be fabricated from silicon by CMOS-compatible means, we project that single cavities and even cavity arrays can be realized, for wavelength ranges compatible with telecommunication windows in the near infrared.

Abstract:The fields of photonic crystals and plasmonics have taken two different approaches to increasing light–matter interaction. Photonic crystal cavities increase temporal confinement of light in a material, as represented by their high quality factor, while plasmonic structures increase spatial confinement, as represented by their low mode volume. However, the inability to simultaneously attain extreme temporal and spatial confinement of light remains a barrier to realizing ultimate control of light in a material and maximum performance in photonic devices. Here, by engineering the photonic crystal unit cell to incorporate deep subwavelength dielectric inclusions, we show that it is possible in a single structure to achieve a mode volume commensurate with plasmonic elements while maintaining a quality factor that is characteristic of traditional photonic crystal cavities. Manipulating the geometric design of the unit cell leads to precise control of the band structure and mode distribution in the photonic crystal. With a dielectric bow-tie unit cell, photonic crystals can achieve a mode volume as small as 0.0005 (λ/n)3 with a quality factor as large as 1.75 × 106. Our results demonstrate that there exists a promising alternative to lossy metals for extreme light concentration and manipulation.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a photonic quasicrystal waveguide, which contains a hollow core surrounded by coaxial dielectric quasiperiodic multilayer. Due to the self-similarity in the cladding structure, multiple omnidirectional photonic band gaps (PBGs) exist in the waveguide. The light waves with the frequencies within the omnidirectional PBGs are totally reflected, thereafter, the transport of multimodes is achieved in the quasiperiodic waveguide. Further, it is shown that the centre frequency and the width of the omnidirectional PBG can be tuned by the refractive indexes or the generations of the quasiperiodic sequence in the cladding multilayer. As a consequence, both the quality factor and the confinement performance of the waveguide can be significantly enhanced by decreasing the width of the omnidirectional PBGs. The investigations make it possible to design miniaturized multifunctional optical devices, such as on-chip narrowband waveguide-based filters and laser resonators.
