Abstract:In this letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an optical amplitude and phase multiplexing scheme to generate a multilevel modulation format signal, return-to-zero eight-amplitude and phase-shifted keying (RZ-8-APSK). The proposed optical amplitude and phase multiplexing is mainly based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fiber. Cross-absorption modulation in an electroabsorption modulator is employed to intentionally adjust the extinction ratio of the generated RZ-8-APSK signal. Amplitude and phase information carried in the inputs is multiplexed and transparently transferred to the generated FWM components. In the experiment, 30-Gb/s RZ-8-APSK signals are generated from input 10-Gb/s on-off keying and 20-Gb/s RZ differential quadrature phase-shifted keying in an all-optical manner.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate an all-optical phase multiplexing scheme using four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber. Two 10-Gb/s pi/2-shifted return-to-zero (RZ) differential phase-shift-keying (DPSK) wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) signals are successfully phase-multiplexed into a 20-Gb/s RZ differential quadrature phase-shift-keying signal with a negative 1.6-dB power penalty. With more input DPSK WDM signals, the proposed scheme can be applied to obtain a multilevel phase-shift-keying signal with increased capacity and enhanced spectral efficiency.

Abstract:We propose an all-optical phase-interleaving technology based on dual-pump four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF). The proposed all-optical phase-interleaving technology is applied in an all-optical phase-multiplexing scheme to successfully phase-multiplex 2times or 3 times 10-Gb/s DPSK-WDM signals to a 20- or 30-Gb/s DPSK in non-return-to-zero (NRZ) formats. The proposed all-optical phase multiplexing scheme is demonstrated using dual-pump FWM in highly nonlinear silica and bismuth fibers. In contrast with optical time-division multiplexing technology, the proposed all-optical phase-multiplexing technology does not require pulse-carving, thus offering a high spectral-efficiency. Differential precoder for each input tributary is operated independently, and no additional encoder or postcoder is required to recover the original data after demodulation on the receiver side.

Abstract:Through four-wave mixing (FWM) process in highly-nonlinear fiber (HNLF) or semiconductor device, the phase-modulation depth of one converted FWM component could be doubled compared with that of the original input signal. Therefore, with a multilevel phase-modulated signal and a CW light as inputs, after FWM process in a nonlinear media, phase pattern (0, pi) carried in the input multilevel phase-modulated signal will not be transferred to one converted FWM component, which could be referred to as an optical phase erasure process. We experimentally demonstrated format conversion from 320-Gb/s return-to-zero differential quadrature phase-shift keying (RZ-DQPSK) to 160-Gb/s return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) through the proposed all-optical phase erasure scheme. The phase information carried in the converted binary RZ-DPSK is logically equal to the input Q-component, or a logical XOR operation result between I and Q components of the input RZ-DQPSK, which correspond to a serial or parallel DQPSK transmitter for the input RZ-DQPSK signal. It can be applied to erase a binary tributary from a multilevel modulation format.

Abstract:An optical format conversion scheme from 120-Gb/s return-to-zero differential 8-ary phase-shift keying (RZ-D8PSK) to 80-Gb/s RZ differential quadrature phase-shift keying (RZ-DQPSK) is demonstrated by optically removing one tributary through optical phase erasure. It is achieved through four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber. An 8-dB sensitivity improvement is obtained for the converted DQPSK signal relative to that of the input D8PSK signal. This is potentially useful to enable the interconnection among neighboring networks where different formats are deployed.

Abstract:The generation of coherent and frequency-locked optical multi-carriers by using cascaded phase modulators and recirculating frequency shifter (RFS) based on an erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) loop has been investigated theoretically and experimentally for a multi-terabit optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) superchannel transmission. The phase and amplitude relationship between RF driving signals of two cascaded phase modulators and the impact of EDFA gain are analyzed. Experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical analysis. The 112 coherent and frequency-locked subcarriers obtained after tilt filtering exhibit a tone-to-noise ratio of larger than 26 dB, a power fluctuation of less than 5 dB, and a frequency spacing of 25 GHz giving a 22.6 nm-wide optical OFDM signal spectrum. By using this method, we have successfully generated a 10-Tbit/s (112 x 100 Gbit/s) single optical OFDM polarization-division-multiplexing QPSK (PDM-QPSK) superchannel with an optical signal to noise ratio per OFDM subchannel greater than 20 dB at 0.1 nm bandwidth, and it has been transmitted over a 640-km SMF-28 and EDFA-only link with BER less than 2 x 10(-3).

Abstract:Simultaneous wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing (FWM) for 10-Gb/s NRZ payload and 2.5-Gb/s OFDM label signals in optical switching network is experimentally demonstrated. The dual-pump scheme based on FWM in semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is employed and simultaneous wavelength conversion for optical packet with one optical payload of 10-Gb/s non-return-to-zero (NRZ) on-off keying (OOK) signals and one optical label of 2.5-Gb/s OFDM signals are realized. The bit-error-rate performance is evaluated for both payload and label after wavelength conversion.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel synthesizing method for high-speed 8-ary quadratic-amplitude modulation (QAM) optical signal generation using commercial optical modulators with binary electrical driving signals. Using this method, we successfully generated 114-Gb/s pulse-duration modulation (PDM)-8QAM optical signals. Intradyne detection of PDM-8QAM optical signals with robust blind polarization demultiplexing has been demonstrated by using a new cascaded multimodulus equalization algorithm. With return-to-zero-shaped PDM-8QAM modulation and the proposed blind polarization demultiplexing algorithm, we demonstrate transmission of a record 32-Tb/s fiber capacity (320 × 114 Gb/s) over 580 km of ultralow-loss single-mode fiber-28 fiber by utilizing C+L-band erbium-doped fiber-amplifier-only optical amplification and single-ended coherent detection technique at an information spectral efficiency of 4.0 bit/s·Hz.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a simultaneous generation of independent 10-Gbit/s wired on/off keying (OOK) signal and 20-Gbit/s wireless quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal by using a dual-polarization Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-MZM) in a millimeter-wave-band radio-over-fiber system at 30 GHz. The polarization directions of two signals are orthogonal, so there is not any interference between two polarizations in the photodiode. By using a 100/200-GHz interleaver, the power penalty after 15-km fiber transmission for the wireless QPSK signal can be reduced from 3.9 to 1.9 dB. As we know, this is the first time to use QPSK modulation format for the wireless signal in the simultaneous generation and delivery of wireless and wired signals by using a dual-polarization modulator.

Abstract:We propose a simple and cost-effective scheme to integrate a wavelength division multiplexed-passive optical network (WDM-PON) with a 60-GHz radio-over-fiber (RoF) system. In optical line terminal/central station (OLT/CS), 10-GHz electronic devices and single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) are used to generate 60-GHz wireless signals based on frequency-sextupling and optical carrier suppression-differential phase shift keying (OCS-DPSK) modulation. By designing a new architecture, only N + 1 single-drive MZMs are required for an N-channel WDM-PON-RoF converged system. The proposed scheme is experimentally demonstrated with 1.25-Gb/s independent wired, wireless and upstream data. Abstract:All-optical NRZ-to-RZ format conversion with a function of wavelength multicasting is proposed in this paper, which is realized by exploiting cross-phase modulation (XPM) and four-wave-mixing (FWM) in a dispersion-flattened highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber (DF-HNL-PCF). The designed format converter is experimentally demonstrated, for which the 1-to-4 wavelength multicasting is achieved simultaneously by filtering out two FWM idler waves and both blue-chirped and red-chirped components of the broadened NRZ spectrum induced by XPM. Moreover, the wavelength tunability and dynamic characteristics of the proposed NRZ-to-RZ format converter are also exploited using the different central wavelengths of an optical clock signal and varying the input optical power at a DF-HNL-PCF in our experiment. It is shown that the designed format converter can possess a wide range of operational wavelength over 17 nm, an optimal extinction ratio of 11.6 dB, and a Q-factor of 7.1, respectively. Since the proposed scheme uses an optical fiber-based configuration and is easy for implementation, it can be very useful for future applications in advanced fiber-optic communication networks.

Abstract:We propose and investigate a novel technique to realize non-return-to-zero (NRZ) to return-to-zero (RZ) format conversion of a multichannel 4-ary amplitude shift keying (4-ASK) signal.The proposed format converter composed of two modulators and a dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) is theoretically investigated using numerical simulation as basis.Research shows that a 4-channel 20-Gb/s NRZ-4-ASK signal can be converted to a RZ-4-ASK signal simultaneously without wavelength shifting and signal quality degradation, with the converted signal multiplexed to 40 Gb/s.
