Abstract:We demonstrate ultrahigh-speed data transmission at a symbol rate of 100 Gbaud in a nonlinear frequency di-vision multiplexing (NFDM) system with continuous spectrum (CS) modulation. Neural network (NN)-based equalization schemes enable the transmission of 100 Gbaud polarization division multiplexed (PDM) 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) over 560 km of standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), with the bit -error-rate (BER) below the 25% overhead soft-decision forward error-correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 4 x 10-2.

Abstract:Nonlinear frequency division multiplexing (NFDM) transmission scheme has attracted great interest in optical fiber communication systems due to its potential for surpassing the Kerr nonlinearity limit. There have been very active studies on single-channel NFDM transmission systems recently. However, up to now, few experiments have validated the feasibility of applying NFDM into wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication systems toward high-capacity transmission for wideband coverage. Moreover, the overall performance of the NFDM system is restricted due to many challenges in theoretical design and practical implementation. Novel neural network-based equalization methods contribute to eliminating multi-dimensional crosstalk, hence prompting the NFDM system performance. In this article, we experimentally demonstrate a high-capacity NFDM-WDM transmission system enabled by the newly developed digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms. With data modulation on the continuous spectrum in nonlinear frequency domain, a 25-channel WDM system with polarization division multiplexing (PDM) 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) transmitting over 800 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) is successfully achieved. To mitigate the undesirable correlations between the nonlinear continuous spectral components, a nonlinear spectrum equalization scheme based on artificial neural network (ANN) is utilized in the receiver side DSP. Through this ANN-based spectrum equalization, a 0.63 dB Q 2 -factor gain is achieved compared to the conventional equalization scheme. A record transmission capacity of 10.83 Tb/s is achieved in a 25-channel WDM system over 800 km SSMF, with a remarkable single-channel line rate of 433.3 Gb/s. Our work reports the highest capacity NFDM-WDM transmission up to date and helps to further explore the inherent ability of NFDM to resist fiber channel nonlinearity.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel synthesizing method for high-speed 8-ary quadratic-amplitude modulation (QAM) optical signal generation using commercial optical modulators with binary electrical driving signals. Using this method, we successfully generated 114-Gb/s pulse-duration modulation (PDM)-8QAM optical signals. Intradyne detection of PDM-8QAM optical signals with robust blind polarization demultiplexing has been demonstrated by using a new cascaded multimodulus equalization algorithm. With return-to-zero-shaped PDM-8QAM modulation and the proposed blind polarization demultiplexing algorithm, we demonstrate transmission of a record 32-Tb/s fiber capacity (320 × 114 Gb/s) over 580 km of ultralow-loss single-mode fiber-28 fiber by utilizing C+L-band erbium-doped fiber-amplifier-only optical amplification and single-ended coherent detection technique at an information spectral efficiency of 4.0 bit/s·Hz.

We experimentally demonstrated the generation and transmission of the 6 × 128-Gb/s Nyquist wavelength-division multiplexing sixteen quadrature amplitude modulation signal over 1200-km single-mode fiber (SMF)-28 with Erbium-doped fiber amplifier only amplification with a net SE of 7.47 b/s/Hz, which is so far, to our knowledge, the highest SE for the signal with the bit rate above 100-Gb/s using the polarization-division multiplexing 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation format. This experiment was successfully enabled by digital-signal-processing (DSP) pre-equalization of transmitter-side impairments and DSP post-equalization of the channel and receiver-side impairments. Nyquist-band is considered in the pre- equalization to enhance the tolerance of the polarization-division multiplexing 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation to the aggressive spectral shaping. The bit error rate for each of the 6 channels is smaller than the limitation of the forward-error-correction limit of 3.8 ×10-3 after 1200-km SMF-28 transmission.

Abstract:All optical method is considered as a promising technique for high symbol rate Nyquist signal generation, which has attracted a lot of research interests for high spectral-efficiency and high-capacity optical communication system. In this paper, we extend our previous work and report the fully experimental demonstration of polarization-division multiplexed (PDM) all-optical Nyquist signal generation based on Sinc -shaped Nyquist pulse with advanced modulation formats, fiber-transmission and single-receiver full-band coherent detection. Using this scheme, we have successfully demonstrated the generation, fiber transmission and single-receiver full-band coherent detection of all-optical Nyquist PDM-QPSK and PDM-16QAM signals up to 125-GBaud. 1-Tb/s single-carrier PDM-16QAM signal generation and full-band coherent detection is realized, which shows the advantage and feasibility of the single-carrier all-optical Nyquist signals.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a hardwareand spectral-efficient large-capacity single-carrier radio-overfiber system at Q-band (33-50 GHz), employing high-level polarization-division-multiplexing 64-ary quadrature-amplitudemodulation (PDM-64QAM) modulation and heterodyne coherent detection. In our demonstrated system, up to 10-GBd (120-Gb/s) PDM-64QAM vector millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signal at 37.5 GHz can be generated and delivered over 1-m wireless distance, with a bit-error ratio (BER) less than the hard-decision forward-error-correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10-3. Our demonstrated system can also generate up to 16-GBd (192-Gb/s) PDM-64QAM vector mm-wave signal at 37.5 GHz, with a BER less than the soft-decision FEC threshold of 1 × 10-2. During the receiver digital signal processing, the employment of largetap decision-directed least-mean-square equalization after carrier recovery significantly improves the system performance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time to demonstrate single-carrier PDM-64QAM modulated wireless mm-wave signal delivery.

Abstract:We have realized the first field transmission of 8 × 216.8-Gb/s Nyquist wavelength-division-multiplexing (N-WDM) signals over 1750-km G.652 fiber consisting of 950-km real and 800-km lab fibers with erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA)-only amplification. The average loss per span is 21.6 dB. Each channel is modulated with 54.2-Gbaud (216.8-Gb/s) polarization-division-multiplexing carrier-suppressed return-to-zero quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-CSRZ-QPSK) data on a 50-GHz grid giving a record spectral efficiency (SE) of 4 b/s/Hz. Digital post filtering and 1-bit maximum likelihood sequence estimation (MLSE) are introduced into the offline digital signal processing (DSP) at the receiver to suppress noise, linear crosstalk and filtering effects. We have also investigated the co-transmission of 200 G PDM-CSRZ-QPSK and 200 G PDM 16-ary quadrature-amplitude-modulation (PDM-16 QAM) signals on a 50-GHz grid, and found that PDM-CSRZ-QPSK signals have better bit-error-rate (BER) performance for both back-to-back and 700-km transmission cases. Meanwhile, PDM-16 QAM signals are subject to larger crosstalk from the neighboring Nyquist QPSK channels.

Compared to polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM) quadrature-phase-shift-keying modulation, multilevel modulation scheme such as PDM 64-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (64QAM) is much more sensitive to intrachannel noise and interchannel crosstalk caused by N-WDM. We experimentally demonstrated the generation and transmission of the 6 × 144-Gb/s N-WDM PDM-64QAM signal over 80-km single-mode fiber SMF-28 with erbium-doped-fiber-amplifier-only amplification. It achieved a net SE of 10 bits/s/Hz assuming 20% forward error correction overhead. This experiment was successfully enabled by digital-signal-processing (DSP) pre-equalization of transmitter-side impairments and DSP post-equalization of the channel and receiver-side impairments. Nyquist-band is considered in the pre-equalization to enhance the tolerance of the PDM-64QAM to the aggressive spectral shaping. The benefit from the proposed Nyquist-band pre-equalization scheme was also experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a coherent transmission system with a high symbol rate using up to 110-GBaud PDM-QPSK signals. Super-Nyquist-filtering technology is used to narrow down the bandwidth of a single channel on a 100-GHz grid. The performance of the high baud rate electronic time division multiplexed-based super-Nyquist-filtered signal is also studied under the aggressive optical filtering elements in multiple reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs) nodes during transmission. We successfully transmit 100-GHz-grid, 20 channel single-carrier 440-Gb/s super-Nyquist 9-QAM-like signal over 3600-km ultralarge effective-area fiber (ULAF) at a high net SE of 4 b/s/Hz (after excluding the 7% hard-decision FEC overhead). The highly filtering tolerant performance of the 9-QAM liked super-Nyquist signal is also experimentally demonstrated. Using this scheme, we then successfully transmit ten channel 440-Gb/s signal over 3000-km ULAF and ten cascaded 100-GHz-grid ROADMs based on the 110-GBaud QPSK. Such signal is coherently detected and processed after a real-time oscilloscope at 160-GSa/s sampling rate with 65-GHz bandwidth.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel scheme to generate eight-level electrical signals for a high-speed 64 quadrature amplitude modulation (64QAM) optical signal. In our demonstrated system, up to a 10Gbaud (120-Gb/s) PDM-64QAM vector millimeter (mm)-wave signal at 57.2 GHz can be generated with a bit-error ratio (BER) less than the hard-decision forward-error-correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10-3, while an up to 20-Gbaud (240-Gb/s) PDM-64QAM vector mm-wave signal at 57.2 GHz can be generated with the BER less than the soft-decision forward-error-correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2 ×10-2. In our demonstrated system, a 10-Gbaud (120-Gb/s) 57.2-GHz PDM-64QAM vector mm-wave signal can also be delivered over a 60-km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) and an 1-m wireless distance with a BER less than the SD-FEC threshold. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that an over 100-Gb/s single-carrier wireless mm-wave signal delivery at V-band has been realized.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the transmission of 100 Gbit/s and beyond vestigial sideband (VSB) n-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-n) signals, with a commercial 10 GHz-class directly modulated laser (DML) in the C-band, using optical filtering. To mitigate transmission impairments at the transmitter side, Nyquist pulse shaping and Kaiser Window filtering techniques are used to overcome the limited bandwidth of optoelectronic devices. At the receiver side, the joint nonlinear equalization based on cascaded multi-modulus algorithm (CMMA) and Volterra Filter (VF) is used to reduce the strong nonlinear impairments from chirp and chromatic dispersion (CD). 100 Gb/s PAM-4, 107.5 Gb/s PAM-4, and 101.25 Gb/s PAM-8 signals can be successfully transmitted over 45 km, 10 km and 10 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) under the bit-error-ratio (BER) of 3.8 × 10-3, respectively.
