Abstract:Real-time optical OFDM transceivers are successfully demonstrated for the first time, which support 1.5 Gbit/s transmission over 500 m 62.5/125 mm multimode fibres in an intensity-modulation and direct-detection system involving a directly modulated DFB laser. The implemented transceivers only use standard commercially available components.

Abstract:We review the recent development in real-time coherent optical OFDM (CO-OFDM) transmission for their algorithm and implementation. The unique challenge of real-time implementation of OFDM for high speed optical data transmission including relatively large phase noise, frequency offset and dynamically changing optical channels are discussed. The fundamental digital signal processing (DSP) architectures of transmitter and receiver are presented in the manner achievable in state of the art field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) or application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs). Primary DSP components' algorithms and implementations are presented and discussed. The successful demonstration of real-time CO-OFDM receivers includes a receiver with sampling rate of 2.5-Gsamples/s to receive a 3.55-Gb/s single channel and 53.3-Gb/s multi-band CO-OFDM signal.

Abstract:In this paper, high-level quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)-encoded real-time orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transceivers are implemented with two field programmable gate arrays and high-resolution digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and analog-to-digital converter (ADC). Some key digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms for real-time direct-detection optical OFDM (DDO-OFDM) system are presented and described in detail. To improve the effective number of bits of ADC and reduce quantization noise, the DAC operates at 5 GS/s with an oversampling factor of 2. Meanwhile, the optimal digital clipping ratio at the transmitter is also investigated by numerical simulation to optimize the performance of the real-time transmitter. The results show that the real-time measured BERs after 10-km SSMF are below the hard-decision forward error correction threshold of $3.8 \times 10^{-3}$. For comparison, the off-line BER performance is also analyzed using off-line DSP approaches. It shows that there is a negligible power penalty between the offline and real-time processing results. To the best of our knowledge, we have achieved the highest modulation format (1024-QAM) for real-time optical OFDM systems.

Abstract:In this article, we review our recent research progresses on the field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based real-time generation and reception of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) signals for the short-reach direct-detection system and radio-over-fiber (RoF) system. With the low-complexity real-time digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, a high-definition video signal with a data rate of 2.97 Gb/s transmission over 20 km single-mode fiber (SMF) without using forward error correction (FEC) technique is experimentally demonstrated in an intensity-modulated direct-detection optical OFDM system in the presence of sampling frequency offset (SFO). In addition, a real-time X-band OFDM-RoF system with heterodyne detection was also realized. With the help of Reed-Solomon coding with a multiple-symbol interleaving/de-interleaving scheme, the 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) OFDM-RoF signals over 10-m wireless and 2.26-km SMF-28 link was successfully achieved with a post-FEC bit error rate less than 1x10(-9).

Abstract:The real-time orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) signal is generated based on Xilinx field programmable gate array(FPGA),which includes pseudo-random binary sequence(PRBS) generator,inverse fast Fourier transform(IFFT) with completely parallel computing technology,and the design of digital-to-analog conversion(DAC) interface circuit.The constellation of demodulated OFDM signal has a good convergence,and the corresponding error vector magnitude(EVM) is 4.42%.Bit error rate is significantly increased due to the different rotation phases for sub-carriers,when the sampling frequency offset exists between transmitter and receiver,and we get improved system performance after sampling frequency synchronization.The direct-detection optical OFDM experimental system is established,and then the off-line digital signal processing after 200 km standard single mode fiber transmission is taken.An optical power penalty of less than 0.6 dB is shown,compared with back-to-back(BTB) operation.The experimental results show that the designed real-time optical OFDM transmitter has good performance.

Abstract:A real-time base-band orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transceiver with symbol synchronization, channel equalization, sampling clock frequency synchronization, and adaptive modulation technique is successfully implemented by field programmable gate arrays and a 2.5-GSps digital-to-analog converter and analog-to-digital converter. The real-time optical OFDM signal at a raw bit rate of 5.156 Gbps within about 1.1-GHz bandwidth transmission over 100-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) is experimentally investigated in a simple intensity-modulation and direct-detection system. The experimental results show that the real-time system has a good bit error rate (BER) performance by using an adaptive modulation technique according to the conditions on the subchannels. After 100-km SSMF transmission, at a BER of 1x10(-3), the power penalty is < 1 dB. Moreover, there is a negligible penalty between the off-line and real-time digital signal processing results. Abstract:Coherent Optical OFDM (CO-OFDM) has been demonstrated for delivering superior performance in spectral efficiency, receiver sensitivity, and polarization-dispersion resilience. Fueled by the rapid advancement in semiconductor technology, high-speed field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA) and analogue-to-digital-converters/digital-to-analogue converters (ADC/DACs) have been increasingly adopted for digital signal processing in optical communications. In this paper, we report the first FPGA-based real-time implementation of coherent optical OFDM (CO-OFDM) receiver with a transmission rate up to 3.1 Gb/s. Several basic aspects of CO-OFDM signal processing are described in detail, and the BER sensitivity performance are evaluated in real-time. To the best of our knowledge, we have achieved the record real-time reception date rate for a single-input single-output (SISO) coherent OFDM signal, in either RF domain or optical domain.

Abstract:This article describes in detail the design and implementation of a 240 Gbit/s Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing(OFDM) real-time optical communication system.It first generates 3×15 orthogonal optical subcarriers by using a multi-carrier generating device,and modulates each subcarrier with OFDM signals at 4 Gbaud/s using a 4QAM signal format.Then it demodulates the optical OFDM signals in every channel at the receiver end using the corresponding intrinsic subcarrier and implements real-time processing of the sampled signals using FPGA.The total effective data rate reaches 240 Gbit/s,the highest among the reported real-time OFDM transmissions.

Abstract:In this paper, we review our recent research progresses on real-time orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission based on FPGA. We successfully demonstrated four-channel wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) 256.51Gb/s 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM)-OFDM signal transmission system for short-reach optical amplifier free inter-connection with real-time reception. Four optical carriers are modulated by four different 16QAM-OFDM signals via 10G-class direct modulation lasers (DMLs). We achieved highest capacity real-time reception optical OFDM signal transmission over 2.4-km SMF with the bit-error ratio (BER) under soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) limitation of 2.4x10(-2). In order to achieve higher spectrum efficiency (SE), we demonstrate 4-channel high level QAM-OFDM transmission over 20-km SMF-28 with real-time reception. 58.72-Gb/s 256QAM-OFDM and 56.4-Gb/s 128QAM-OFDM signal transmission within 25-GHz grid is achieved with the BER under 2.4x10(-2) and real-time reception.

Abstract:In this paper, we review our recent research progresses on real-time orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission and reception. We successfully realized the transmission and reception of real-time 100Gbps dual optical carrier 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM)-OFDM with direct detection for ultra-short fiber transmission. And we also successfully demonstrated the transmission and reception of real-time 100Gbps single-band coherent optical dual polarization (DP)-16QAM-OFDM signal for the first time with coherent detection. The measured bit error ratio (BER) for 100Gbps single-band coherent optical DP-16QAM-OFDM signal is less than 3.8x10(-3) after 200-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) without electrical dispersion compensation (EDC).

Abstract:We experimentally evaluate performance of coherent optical DFT-Spread OFDM in band-multiplexed transmissions. Compared with conventional clipping methods, DFT-S OFDM can reduce the OFDM PAPR value while has no interference from the neighboring bands.

Abstract:Real-time digital communication and multimedia upstream service transmission based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and Free Space Optical Communications (FSO) are experimentally demonstrated in this paper. The implementations of digital domain up-conversion and down-conversion based on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) are introduced. A new design of training preamble and a novel timing synchronization algorithm is implemented. An improved calculation scheme for Bit Error Ratio (BER) and Error Vector Magnitude (EVM) is proposed in this paper.
