Abstract:As high as 13.0dB single-pass gain was obtained at 1064.4nm in a thin electro-optic ceramic plate of neodymium doped lanthanum-modified lead zirconate titanate (Nd:PLZT). Pumping with a diode laser, gains were achieved in 1.0 and 0.5mol% Nd ion doped samples over a broad seed laser power ranging from tens of nanowatts to tens of milliwatts at room temperature. The broad absorption spectra of Nd:PLZT made it insensitive to the pump wavelength. The Nd:PLZT had a total scattering loss coefficient of less than 0.06cm−1 and exhibited a considerable quadratic electro-optic coefficient greater than 0.30×10−16m2∕V2.

Abstract:Both single-pass gain and lasing action at 1064.4 nm were observed in ceramic gain media of neodymium doped lanthanum-modified lead zirconate titanate, which exhibits good electrooptic (EO) effect from visible through mid-wave IR band (400 nm to 5.5 µm). These works have removed roadblocks off the way leading to development of long envisioned multifunctional optical devices. The impact of the Nd3+ doping concentration on the EO effect in the Nd3+:PLZT ceramics was studied. The finding of the slowly trailing-off was satisfactorily explained with the rich vacancy-based carrier traps, which are responsible for the long persistent optoenergy storage.

Abstract:Rare earth doped electro-optic (EO) ceramics of lanthanum-modified lead zirconate titanate (PLZT) are promising in building multifunctional optical devices, by taking advantage of both EO effect and optical activity. In this work, the combination of the measured spectra of absorption and photoluminescence, the fluorescent decay, the calculated Judd-Ofelt parameters, and measured single pass gain in Tm3+, Ho3+ codoped PLZT ceramics have marked them out as promising gain media in building electrically controllable lasers/optical amplifiers and other multifunctional devices. Optical energy storage was also observed in the optical amplification dynamics.

Abstract:Using rare earth cations (such Ho3+, Tm3+, Er3+, and Yb3+) singly and doubly doped lead lanthanum-modified zirconate titanate ceramic gain media, excellent upconversion was observed and investigated. Intrinsic rich carrier traps and their contributions to optical energy storage and upconversion were investigated under different conditions, such as illumination and electrical fields. Abstract:Optical amplification was observed in electro-optic (EO) ceramic plates of neodymium doped lanthanum-modified lead zirconate titanate (Nd3+:PLZT), when the pumping and seeding beams are not overlapped temporarily. This striking feature in the gain measurement and the accompanying slowly trailing-off both seen in the optical amplification as well as in the lasing action are satisfactorily explained by electron releasing from the rich vacancy-based carrier traps in the intrinsically disordered ceramics, i.e., the consecutively optical, thermal stimuli are found responsible for the long persistent optoenergy storage, and consequently the slow response of the gain dynamics. These findings in optical amplification, the slowly trailing-off, and the underlying mechanism have opened a new way of developing novel controllable optical devices. The model thus established could serve as a guide in design and refinement of a new generation of products out of this excellent, well commercialized EO PLZT ceramics family and similar others.

Abstract:Spectroscopic, structural, dielectric, and electro-optic properties were studied in Pb0.90La0.10[(Yb1/2Nb1/2)0.15(Zr0.425Ti0.575)0.85]0.975O3 (PYN–PLZT) ceramics. Theoretically, phenomenological parameters, such as absorption and emission cross-sections were evaluated, based on the experimental data obtained in the ceramics, suggesting that the PYN–PLZT solid solution, which is with very high constitutional Yb3+ concentration without distorting the microstructure and adversely affecting the optical properties, can serve as a promising candidate in designing multi-functional optical devices. As a direct confirmation to the above analyses, as high as 5.0dB single pass gain was obtained in the material system. In addition, as high as 2.3×10−16m2/V2 quadratic electro-optical (EO) coefficients were obtained from the PYN–PLZT ceramics and the hysteresis loops were slim. All those data mark the material system out as ideal gain media in building fast response, low voltage and low power consumption, wavelength-tuning lasers.

Abstract:In the past few years,ceramic laser materials have emerged with many advantages,such as lower cost fabrication,high melting temperature and large size samples more easily to be manufactured,as compared to crystals and glasses.There has been remarkable interest in rare-earth-doped ferroelectric ceramics which are suitable material for novel integrated-optic devices formed by a combination of lasers/amplifier with electro-optic(EO)and nonlinear-optic waveguide components.Recently,a new highly transparent,electro-optic ceramic material,Er3+ and Er3+/Yb3+ ions doped Pb1-xLaxZryTi1-yO3(PLZT),have been fabricated,which have exceptionally high electro-optic(EO)effect.The up-conversion luminescence of Er3+ and Er3+/Yb3+ ions doped PLZT for active electro-optical applications has been investigated.The green light of 540 nm and 566 nm can be observed in Er3+ doped PLZT.Moreover,their intensity gets stronger along with concentration of Er3+.In Er3+/Yb3+ co-doped PLZT,besides the green light of 540 nm and 566 nm,a relatively weak red light of 668 nm can also be observed.To all sample,the nonlinear curves fitting to the relationship between up-conversion intensity and excitation intensity were made,which were concluded that both red emission and green emission were the absorption process of double-photon.And again the character of up-conversion luminescence was discussed using the Raman spectra of PLZT.The theory and experimentation both show Er3+ and Er3+/Yb3+ ions doped PLZT,based on its large electro-optical effect,have a prospect to be applied for electro-optic Q-switched double-function up-conversion laser device.

Abstract:We demonstrated optical amplification at 1550 nm with a carbon tetrachloride solution of Er3+-Yb3+ codoped NaYF4 nanocubes synthesized with solvo-thermal route. Upon excitation with a 980 nm laser diode, the nanocube solution exhibited strong near-infrared emission by the I-4(13/2) -> I-4(15/2) transition of Er3+ ions due to energy transfer from Yb3+ ions. We obtained the highest optical gain coefficient at 1550 nm of 0.58 cm(-1) for the solution with the pumping power of 200 mW. This colloidal solution might be a promising candidate as a liquid medium for optical amplifier and laser at the optical communication wavelength. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Er3+- and Er3+/Yb3+-doped lead germanate glasses that are suitable for use in fibre lasers and optical amplifiers as well as optical waveguide devices have been fabricated and characterized. The absorption spectra from near-infrared to visible were obtained and the Judd-Ofelt parameters were determined from the absorption band. Intense and broad 1.53mum infrared fluorescence and visible upconversion luminescence were observed under 976 nm diode laser excitation. For 1.53mum emission band, the full widths at half-maximum are 36, 37, 51 nm for GPE, GPYE and GPFE samples, respectively. For frequency upconversion emission, the intense bands centred at around 524, 545, 657 nm are due to the S-4(3/2) + H-2(11/2) --> I-4(15/2) and F-4(9/2) --> I-4(15/2) transitions of Er3+ ions. The quadratic dependence of the green and red emissions on excitation power indicates that the two-photon absorption process occurs under the 976nm excitation.

Abstract:A correlation between a photoinduced broadband absorption (BBA) and a strong long persistent optoenergy storage (LPOES), both evident in ceramic plates of neodymium-doped lanthanum-modified lead zirconate titanate (Nd:PLZT), has been proposed and verified experimentally. As a direct evidence of the suggested correlation, a 3.0 dB gain was obtained with a preilluminated Nd:PLZT plate by simply heating up the plate to 60 degrees C. Thermal history related gain profiles taken in an Nd:PLZT plate unveiled that the intrinsically rich carrier traps in the ceramics are highly responsible for the remarkable BBA and underlying LPOES, and hence thermal to near-IR wavelength translation.

Abstract:Optical absorption and emission spectra of Er3+/Yb3+ ions in PLZT (Pb1−xLaxZryTi1−yO3) ceramic have been studied. Based on the Judd—Ofelt (J–O) theory, the J–O intensity parameters were calculated to be Ω2=2.021×10−20cm2, Ω4=0.423×10−20cm2, Ω6=0.051×10−20cm2 from the absorption spectrum of Er3+/Yb3+-codoped PLZT. The J–O intensity parameters have been used to calculate the radiative lifetimes and the branching ratios for some excited 4I13/2, 4I11/2, 4I9/2 4F9/2, and 4S3/2 levels of Er3+ ion. The stimulated emission cross-section (8.24×10−21cm2) was evaluated for the 4I13/2→4I15/2 transition of Er3+. The upconversion emissions at 538, 564, and 666nm have been observed in Er3+/Yb3+-codoped PLZT by exciting at 980nm, and their origins were identified and analyzed.

Abstract:Expanding gain bandwidth into the L-band for erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) is a crucial strategy to overcome limitations in prevalent C-band focused commercial silica-based EDFAs, significantly boosting optical network transmission capacity. Herein, we synthesized Er3+-doped broadband near-infrared emission tellurite glasses utilizing the melt quenching process, systematically exploring the impact of ZnCl2 on the glass structure and optical properties. The 82TeO2–3Nb2O5–15ZnCl2–3Er2O3 (TNZ15) glass emerged as a standout candidate for broadband amplifiers around wavelength at 1.55 μm. With escalating ZnCl2 concentration, a discernible red shift in the emission peak wave lines was observed, accompanied by an expansion of the full width at half maximum (FWHM) from 98 nm to 106 nm. Noteworthy characteristics of all samples included exceptional thermal stability and elevated near-infrared (NIR) transmittance. Application of the Judd-Ofelt (J-O) theory facilitated the calculation of J-O parameter intensity, providing deeper insights into the optical behavior of the materials. Finally, the evaluation of TNZ15 planar optical waveguides, employing the vertical top pumping mode of two 980 nm LEDs, encompassed both the C-band (1530–1565 nm) and the L-band (1565–1625 nm). The results underscore the potential of TNZ15 glass as a promising gain material for broadband optical amplifiers and lasers, offering valuable insights into the development of next-generation optical amplification technologies.

Abstract:In the past years, light-emitting devices (LEDs) based on erbium (Er)-doped insulators or wide-bandgap semiconductors have received intensive attention because the intra-4f transition (4I13/2→4I15/2) of Er3+ ions at ～ 1540 nm has potential applications in the optical interconnection for silicon-based circuits. The LEDs with rare-earth (RE)-doped SiOx (x ≤ 2) or SiNx (x ≤ 4/3) films have been well investigated as the silicon-compatible emitters. However, they suffer difficulty in injecting current and easing fatigue. In this context, the LEDs with RE-doped oxide semiconductors have been extensively investigated out of research interest in recent years. Among the oxide semiconductors, TiO2 is a desirable host for RE-doping because it is transparent for visible and infrared light, and cost-effective, and has considerably high RE solubility. In our previous work (Zhu C, Lü C Y, Gao Z F, Wang C X, Li D S, Ma X Y, Yang D R 2015 Appl. Phys. Lett. 107 131103), we have realized erbium (Er)-related visible and near-infrared (～ 1540 nm) electroluminescence (EL) from the LED with a structure of ITO/TiO2:Er/SiO2/n+-Si, in which TiO2:Er refers to the Er-doped TiO2 film as the light-emitting layer. In this work, we co-dope ytterbium (Yb) into the TiO2:Er film in the aforementioned LED to significantly enhance the Er-related visible and near-infrared EL. It is revealed that a certain amount of Yb co-doping enables the TiO2:Er film to transform its crystal phase from anatase to rutile. Such a phase transformation reduces the symmetry of crystal field surrounding the Er3+ ions incorporated into the TiO2 host. Moreover, the substitution of over-sized Yb3+ ions for Ti4+ ions in the TiO2 host leads to the distortion of the crystal field around the Er3+ ions. The aforementioned symmetry-reduction and distortion of the crystal field increase the probabilities of the intra-4f transitions of Er3+ ions. Due to the aforementioned reason, the Yb co-doping into the TiO2:Er film remarkably enhances the EL from the corresponding LED. It is believed that the strategy of Yb-codoping can be adopted to enhance the EL from the LEDs with other RE-doped TiO2 films.

Abstract:The present paper reports on the results pertaining to the emission properties of 0.5 mol% Er3+ and together (0.5 Yb3+/0.5 Er3+) doped PZL (P2O5-ZnO-LiF) glasses prepared by a melt quenching method. From the optical absorption data, absorption and stimulated emission cross-sections have been evaluated using McCumber's theory and further cross-sectional gain has also been computed for Yb3+/Er3+ doped glass. On exciting the single (Er3+) and dual rare earth ions (Yb3+/Er3+) doped glass sample at), exci = 379 nm, three emission bands in the visible region H-2(11/2)-> I-4(15/2) (526 nm), S-4(3/2)-> I-4(15/2) (549 nm) and H-4(15/2) (664 nm) are observed and while at 2,exci = 980 nm (Laser Diode) excitation a broad emission at 1530 nm attributed to H-4(13/2)-> I-4(15/2) is observed in the NIR region. The enhancement in visible and NIR emission intensities with the addition of Yb3+ to Er3+ due to an energy transfer process from Yb3+ to Er3+ has been explained in terms of an energy level diagram.

Abstract:The luminescence decay curve from transitions of I13/2→I15/2 in the Er/Yb-codoped PLZT transparent ceramic was measured. A model for the dynamics of frequency upconversion in Er/Yb-codoped PLZT transparent ceramic based on the rate equations was proposed. The dynamics of the upconverted emissions were studied to evaluate energy transfer rates between Er and Yb ions, and the forward energy transfer rate for Yb to Er and the backward transfer rate for Er to Yb were 7.19×10cms and 3.73×10cms, respectively.
