Abstract:A real-time dual-polarization CO-OFDM receiver in a 2×2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) configuration is demonstrated. The signal streams are processed in real-time mode, and the data rates of 3.33 Gbps and 6.67 Gbps are realized for 4-QAM and 16-QAM respectively.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a 2 × 2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless over fiber transmission system. Seamless translation of two orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals on dual optical polarization states into wireless MIMO transmission at 795.5 Mbit/s net data rate is enabled by using digital training-based channel estimation. A net spectral efficiency of 2.55 bit/s/Hz is achieved.

Abstract:We propose a spectral efficient radio over wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) system by combining optical polarization division multiplexing (PDM) and wireless multiple input multiple output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing techniques. In our experiment, a training-based zero forcing (ZF) channel estimation algorithm is designed to compensate the polarization rotation and wireless multipath fading. A 797 Mb/s net data rate QPSK-OFDM signal with error free (<1 × 10(5)) performance and a 1.59 Gb/s net data rate 16QAM-OFDM signal with BER performance of 1.2 × 10(2) are achieved after transmission of 22.8 km single mode fiber followed by 3 m and 1 m air distances, respectively.

Abstract:Multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) technology is a promising method to increase spectral efficiency in wireless communications. In this paper, a 60-GHz orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing radio over fiber (OFDM-RoF) system employing 2 × 2 MIMO wireless technology is demonstrated. With the proposed equalizer employing least mean squares (LMS) algorithm, MIMO channel mixing and I/Q-mismatch can be compensated simultaneously. 16-QAM and 32-QAM OFDM signal transmissions under forward error correction (FEC) threshold ( 1×10-3) are demonstrated. A data rate of 76.3 Gb/s can be achieved with a bit-loading algorithm over 25-km fiber transmission and 3.5-m wireless transmission.

Abstract:In this paper, we review our recent research progresses on real-time orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission and reception. We successfully realized the transmission and reception of real-time 100Gbps dual optical carrier 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM)-OFDM with direct detection for ultra-short fiber transmission. And we also successfully demonstrated the transmission and reception of real-time 100Gbps single-band coherent optical dual polarization (DP)-16QAM-OFDM signal for the first time with coherent detection. The measured bit error ratio (BER) for 100Gbps single-band coherent optical DP-16QAM-OFDM signal is less than 3.8x10(-3) after 200-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) without electrical dispersion compensation (EDC).

Abstract:In this letter, we demonstrate a 48-Gb/s polarization-division-multipexing (PDM) QPSK radio-over-fiber (RoF) system over 2x2 multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) wireless transmission. The PDM-QPSK signal is up-converted to a 40-GHz mm-wave and broadcasted through the 2 x 2 MIMO wireless system. The principle of the PDM-QPSK RoF system over 2 x 2 MIMO wireless transmission is presented. The conventional digital coherent demodulation algorithms for the compensation of chromatic dispersion, polarization demultiplexing and frequency offset, and phase recovery have been proved valid even if the 2x2 MIMO wireless transmission system is utilized. The BER performance after over 400-km fiber link and 100-cm wireless link clearly demonstrates the feasibility of this PDM-QPSK RoF system over 2 x 2 MIMO wireless link.

Abstract:This paper reports an experimental demonstration of a 16 Gbit/s millimeter-wave communication link using MIMO processing of 2 OAM modes on each of two transmitter/receiver antenna apertures. Two groups of multiplexed OAM beams, each containing OAM beams of ℓ =1 and +3 are generated and transmitted through two transmitter apertures respectively. The two transmitter apertures are separated with a certain distance such that the two groups of OAM beams are spatially overlapping at the receiver aperture plane. Each channel carries 1-GBaud 16-QAM signals at the same carrier frequency of 28 GHz. Our experimental results show that MIMO equalization processing can help mitigate the interferences from the other OAM channels and the BER performance of each channel improves significantly after MIMO processing. Our results indicate that OAM multiplexing and traditional spatial multiplexing combined with MIMO processing can be compatible and complementary with each other.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrated a seamlessly integrated fiber-wireless system that delivers multichannel 120-Gb/s data through 80-km fiber and 2-m 2 x 2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless link at 92-GHz W-band adopting polarization division multiplexing quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) modulation. The three-channel 3 x 40-Gb/s optical PDM-QPSK signals with 12.5-GHz channel spacing are simultaneously upconverted to 92-GHz wireless carrier by optical polarization-diversity heterodyne beating and then transmitted and received by two pairs of transmitter and receiver antennas, which form a full 2 x 2 MIMO wireless link. At the wireless receiver, a two-stage analog and digital downconversion is performed. Polarization and wireless 2 x 2 MIMO demultiplexing are realized by constant modulus algorithm based on digital signal processing. The bit-error ratio performance for the 120-Gb/s PDM-QPSK signal is measured after 80-km single-mode fiber-28 and 2-m wireless transmission.

Abstract:A terahertz (THz)-over-fiber multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission of 4096-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) supported by 46-GBaud quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal at 320 GHz is experimentally demonstrated in this letter. By employing the polarization division multiplexing (PDM) technique and 1-bit delta-sigma modulation (DSM) quantization, we successfully implement 4.6-GHz 4096-QAM OFDM signal transmission over 20 km of standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) and a 3-m MIMO wireless link, and satisfy the soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold of $1.0\times 10^{-2}$ with 15% overhead, which corresponds to a net rate of 84.4 Gbps for THz-over-fiber transmission. To the best of our knowledge, fusing OFDM and PDM, this is the highest rate achievable for DSM applications in THz communication. This experimental demonstration can provide a promising solution for high-order QAM signals in a fiber-wireless seamless network in future 6G networks.
