Abstract:When we compare all the renewable energy sources with respect to their power quality and smooth operation, wind turbine generator system plays most economic and effective resource. Previous studies on wind turbine, Type-I WT system (fixed speed), and Type-II WT system (variable speed) were implemented with conventional PI controller. Nowadays, Type-III wind turbine system came into feature for its faster operational capabilities under variable wind speed during transients (Medeiros Rocha et al. in IEEE Latin Am Trans 16(2):521-526, 2018; Honrubia-Escribano et al. in IEEE Trans Energy Convers 33(1):137-145, 2018; Sun et al. in IEEE Trans Power Syst 33(3):3040-3051, 2018). In this paper, DFIG, i.e., doubly fed induction generator is operated through Type-III wind turbine system with variable speed and variable pitch angle control scheme which is now mostly implemented in power generation and distribution industries on grid integration. On the basis of operation, it can be carried out by either in standalone mode, sliding control mode, island mode, or grid connected (Guest et al. in IEEE Trans Power Electron 33(6):4934-4943, 2018; Hu et al. in IEEE Trans Power Syst 32(4):2799-2809, 2017) In this research, DF induction generator using Type-III wind turbine (WT) model is assembled to a constant frequency and constant voltage source integrated with the grid. The control structure and the controllers of WECS are demonstrated through the MATLAB simulink model. The steady-state operation and transient characteristics of the whole wind energy conversion system are explained with detail using Type-III Wind turbine system associated with back-to-back PWM (pulse width modulation) operated by three-phase two-level converter with VSC (voltage source converter). To achieve the overall output power of the designed WECS, some effective control schemes are implemented. These control schemes include DFIG in maximum output power control, grid-side converter (GSC) control, pitch angle control (PAC), and rotor-side converter (RSC) (Sun et al. 2018) The model also designed to study and focusing on behavior of the induction generator in Type-III wind turbine (WT) system during various fault conditions with respect to variation in wind speed with control action of PI controller and fuzzy logic controller (FLC) (Göksu et al. in IEEE Trans Energy Convers 31(3):1170-1178, 2016; Hussein et al. in IEEE Trans Power Deliv 31(5):2322-2331, 2016; Bhattacharjee and Roy in IET Gener Transm Distrib 10(5):1179-1189, 2016). The research novelty highlights different types of Fuzzy structures with four different modes implemented to Type-III wind turbine and comparisons were shown for PI and FLC during steady-state and transient-state conditions.
