Abstract:Recently, remarkable efforts have been made in developing wireless communication systems at ultrahigh data rates, with radio frequency (RF) carriers in the millimeter wave (30-300 GHz) and/or in the terahertz (THz, >300 GHz) bands. Converged technologies combining both the electronics and the photonics show great potential to provide feasible solutions with superior performance compared to conventional RF technologies. However, technical challenges remain to be overcome in order to support high data rates with considerably feasible wireless distances for practical applications, particularly in the THz region. In this work, we present an experimental demonstration of a single-channel THz radio-over-fiber (RoF) system operating at 350 GHz, achieving beyond 100 Gbit/s data rate over a 10-km fiber plus a >20-m wireless link, without using any THz amplifiers. This achievement is enabled by using an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing signal with a probabilistic-shaped 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation format, a pair of highly directive Cassegrain antennas, and advanced digital signal processing techniques. This work pushes the THz RoF technology one step closer to ultrahigh-speed indoor wireless applications and serves as an essential segment of the converged fiber-wireless access networks in the beyond 5G era.
Beyond 100 Gb/s Optoelectronic Terahertz Communications: Key Technologies and Directions

Abstract:The terahertz band (0.1 THz-10 THz) with massive spectrum resources is recognized as a promising candidate for future rate-greedy applications, such as 6G communications. Optoelectronic terahertz communications are beneficial for realizing 100 Gb/s data rate and beyond, which have greatly promoted the progress of the 6G research. In this article, we give technical insight into the key technologies of optoelectronic terahertz communications with high data rates in the physical layer, including approaches of broadband devices, baseband signal processing technologies, and design of advanced transmission system architectures. A multicarrier signal processing routine with high noise tolerance is proposed and experimentally verified in a 500 Gb/s net rate terahertz communication system. Finally, we discuss the future directions of optoelectronic terahertz technologies toward the target of terabit- scale communications.

Abstract:In recent years, tapered optical fibers (TOFs) have attracted increasing interest and developed into a range of devices used in many practical applications ranging from optical communication, sensing to optical manipulation and high-Q resonators. Compared with conventional optical fibers, TOFs possess a range of unique features, such as large evanescent field, strong optical confinement, mechanical flexibility and compactness. In this review, we critically summarize the multimode interference in TOFs and some of its applications with a focus on our research project undertaken at the Optoelectronics Research Centre of the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom.

Abstract:Wireless communications are rapidly becoming the means of data and information transfer for a broad range of applications. As wireless communication applications continue to expand, the information transfer rates are evolving toward the Gigabit per second data rate and, for some applications, there is even a need for terabit per second data rate transfer in the wireless network. In addition, wireless terminals often require instantaneous switching and communications between network members. For most applications directional antennas are needed to support the high data throughput requirements, and phased array antennas are the only high gain, directional antennas that can be rapidly switched to provide instantaneous communications among network members scattered geographically. Wireless terminal equipment is currently designed to operate in the 1 to 60 GHz frequency range and, traditionally, these equipment are designed with RF hardware. More recently, optics technology has been demonstrated to play an important role in RF systems as the True-Time-Delay in the phased array antenna, and, for some systems operating at high data rates, optical interconnects at the baseband level require E-O and O-E conversions. This paper discusses the considerations in using optics technology in the design of the wireless terminal network including optical signal processing, optical backplanes, optical networking, optical interconnects, and optical components. This paper also describes the architecture of an RF wireless communications network using a range of optical technologies.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an ultrafast terahertz (THz) photonic wireless communication link in the 350 GHz band with up to 100 Gbit/s data rate, with an emphasis on extending its wireless reach. By combining the techniques of using a cutting-edge narrow-band uni-traveling-carrier photodiode (UTC-PD) as the THz photo-mixing emitter, spectrally efficient modulation formats and advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, we successfully transmit 25 GBaud/s 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) signals (overall 100 Gbit/s data rate) over a 350 GHz wireless link with an extended distance of 2 m. This achievement pushes the accessibility of ultrafast 100 Gbit/s wireless communication beyond the state-of-the-art, and makes 100 Gbit/s ultrafast THz wireless communication systems promising for future smart high speed wireless access services.
Optimization of Asymmetric Orthomode Transducer at Terahertz Frequency

Abstract:For the need of polarization multiplexing, an asymmetric orthomode transducer (OMT) working at 260~325 GHz is demonstrated in this paper. Since the reflection efficient bandwidth of directed port is commonly wider than that of side port in the previous designs, the coupling aperture corresponding to side port is enlarged, which optimizes the performance of the side port and reduces difficulty of high frequency processing while deteriorate directed port a little due to higher discontinuity. Then the first two high-order-modes introduced by discontinuity and asymmetry is investigated. To achieve a better polarization isolation, the size of the common port is reduced, which decreases the cross-polarization component introduced by structural design and fabrication errors with the help of the suppression of the highorder-modes. As a result, the bandwidth and polarization isolation are increased. The return loss is less than -15db and the polarization isolation is better than -50db in the working frequency.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) beams with abundant spectrum resources and low beam divergence can be combined with orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams characterized by orthogonal propagation to multifold the capacity of wireless communication systems. However, in order to support the explosive growth of massive communication data traffic, THz OAM must be further enhanced with other multiplexing technologies. Therefore, it is imperative to develop new multifunctional devices. In this article, we propose a novel broadband dual-polarized reflective metasurface, which can generate two coaxially propagating OAM beams with distinct modes for each polarization. Because of the geometric symmetry, the metasurface shows the same electromagnetic response with respect to both x -and y -polarized waves, thus possessing the dual-polarized property. Simulated and measured results verify that the metasurface can realize the incorporation of OAM multiplexing and polarization multiplexing in a broad frequency range of 90–110 GHz. The crosstalks from other OAM modes and polarizations are lower than $-$ 16 dB and $-$ 21 dB, respectively. Based on the metasurface, a THz wireless communication system was demonstrated by multiplexing four independent OAM beams with each channel carrying a 6-Gbaud quaternary phase shift keying (QPSK) signal, so that an aggregate 48 Gbit/s data transmission with bit error rate (BER) below 3.8e-3 was achieved. This work verifies the feasibility of metasurface for multidimensional multiplexing in the THz region, meaning the metasurface may serve as a promising candidate for ultrahigh speed THz communication systems.

Abstract:Due to a great many superior features of infrared light communication (ILC), like high capacity and strong privacy, ILC is considered a potential candidate for serving the high demands of beyond fifth-generation/sixth-generation (B5G/6 G) communication systems. However, the terminal's limited field-of-view (FOV) induces great difficulty in establishing line-of-sight (LoS) link between the transceiver and the terminal. In this paper, we propose a wide-FOV auto-coupling optical antenna system that utilizes a wide-FOV telecentric lens to collect incident infrared beams and automatically couple them into a specific single-mode-fiber (SMF) channel of fiber array and optical switch. The performance of this optical antenna system is assessed through simulation and manual alignment operation, and validated by automatic alignment results. A coupling loss of less than 10.6 dB within a FOV of 100(degrees )for both downstream and upstream beams in C band is demonstrated by the designed system. Furthermore, we establish a bidirectional optical wireless communications (OWC) system employing this antenna and a fiber-type modulating retro-reflector (MRR) system in the terminal. Both 10-Gbps on-off keying (OOK) downstream and upstream transmissions are successfully realized with the FOV of up to 100(degrees) in C band where the measured bit-error-rate (BER) is lower than 3.8 x 10-3. To the best of our knowledge, this is a brand-new auto-coupling optical antenna system with the largest FOV in ILC automatic alignment works in terminals that have ever been reported.

Abstract:To support massive deployment of broadband radio applications, such as 5G and high-definition videos for terrestrial televisions, large system capacity and high spectrum efficiency are highly demanded in radio over fiber (RoF) systems. In this article, we propose a terabit digital RoF system capable of providing high-speed transmission, where multicore fiber (MCF) is introduced for the access segment between the central unit and remote unit. Two key technologies that greatly enhance system capacity and spectrum efficiency, namely MCF enabled self-homodyne detection and compressed quantization, are demonstrated.

Abstract:With the exponential growth in data density and user ends of wireless networks, fronthaul is tasked with supporting aggregate bandwidths exceeding thousands of gigahertz while accommodating high-order modulation formats. However, it must address the bandwidth and noise limitations imposed by optical links and devices in a cost-efficient manner. Here we demonstrate a high-fidelity fronthaul system enabled by self-homodyne digital-analog radio-over-fiber superchannels, using a broadband electro-optic comb and uncoupled multicore fiber. This self-homodyne superchannel architecture not only offers capacity boosting but also supports carrier-recovery-free reception. Our approach achieves a record-breaking 15,000 GHz aggregated wireless bandwidth, corresponding to a 0.879 Pb/s common public radio interface (CPRI) equivalent data rate. Higher-order formats up to 1,048,576 quadrature-amplitude-modulated (QAM) are showcased at a 100 Tb/s class data rate. Furthermore, we employ a packaged on-chip electro-optic comb as the sole optical source to reduce the cost, supporting a data rate of 100.5 Tb/s with the 1024-QAM format. These demonstrations propel fronthaul into the era of Pb/s-level capacity and exhibit the promising potential of integrated-photonics implementation, pushing the boundaries to new heights in terms of capacity, fidelity, and cost.

Abstract:Employing plasmonic antennas for subdiffraction focusing of light on recording media requires to take into account the complete structure of the medium, including dielectric cover layers. We find, with finite difference time domain simulations, that optical energy transfer to the magnetic recording layer is most efficient for an off-resonant antenna. Furthermore, we show that the focal spot in the magnetic film is well below the diffraction limit, making nanoscale all-optical magnetic data recording achievable.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a large-capacity and long-haul photonics-aided dual-polarization (DP) terahertz wireless transmission system at 300 GHz. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme is employed to resist dispersion effects in the fiber link and multipath effects in the wireless link. To extend wireless transmission distance, we deploy high-gain dielectric plano-convex lenses, conical antennas (CAs), low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) as well as integrated mixer/amplifier/multiplier chain (IMAMC). We propose and utilize a low-complexity multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) hybrid time-frequency-polarization domain (TFPD) trigonometric-memory-polynomial (TMP) nonlinear equalizer (NLE), which is utilized to simultaneously eliminate in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) imbalance, inter-symbol interference (ISI), inter-carrier interference (ICI), polarization crosstalk and nonlinear impairments for DP-OFDM signals. Compared to the traditional MIMO Volterra-NLE, the MIMO-TFPD-TMP-NLE reduces the required number of real multiplications by 37.7%. By utilizing advanced THz modules and DSP algorithms, we have successfully achieved a record-breaking air interface user rate (AIUR)-distance product of 50.6 Gbit/s·km (253 Gbit/s × 0.2 km) in the THz band (above 0.3 THz).
Approaching Terabits Per Carrier Metro-Regional Transmission Using Beyond-100GBd Coherent Optics with Probabilistically Shaped DP-64QAM Modulation

Abstract:This research work proposed and experimentally demonstrated beyond-100GBd probabilistically shaped coherent optics that support the transmission of a ∼1.2 Tbps coded line rate and a ∼0.9 Tbps net bit rate per optical carrier over metro-regional distances. Pursuing next-generation transmission systems having both high capacity approaching terabits per wavelength and high spectral efficiency require engineering efforts from different aspects, which may include the enhancement of analog-to-digital or digital-to-analog interfaces, the improvement of channel characteristics, and also the realization of better receiver sensitivities, preferably through DSP techniques such as probabilistic shaping (PS). By doing so, this work achieved a single-channel and a 112.5-GHz WDM transmission of 900G wavelengths over 800 and 400 km, respectively, which employed a PS DP-64QAM modulation format at 105 GBd, yielding a net spectral efficiency of 8.05 bits/s/Hz. Such a high symbol rate was demonstrated using a commercially available DAC unit without band-interleaving. The enhanced optical channel consists of ITU-T G.654 compliant Terawave SLA+ fiber spans with the backward-pumped Raman amplifiers. In addition, with the same PS DP-64QAM modulation format and the same enhanced channel, this research work also demonstrated that 400G wavelengths can be delivered over 2800 km supporting long-haul applications.
Automatic Power Optimization of a 44 Tbit/s Real-Time Transmission System over 1900 km G.654.E Fiber and Widened C+L Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers Utilizing 400 Gbit/s Transponders

Abstract:Power unevenness, mainly induced by stimulated Raman scattering, has been a major problem in multi-band transmission systems, especially in the upcoming field-deployed 400 Gbit/s widened C band plus L band system for backbone long-haul and ultra-long-haul scenarios. To reduce the impact of power unevenness, we propose an automatic power optimization (APO) algorithm to guarantee reliable transmission for all channels, especially the channels at short wavelengths. The simulation results show that the power unevenness of output power after 5-span transmission in the C band is up to 11 dB before APO, while after APO is applied, it is greatly improved to less than 1.6 dB. To further investigate the performance of the APO scheme, we conduct a real-time 44 Tbit/s C+L transmission system over 1900 km G.654.E fiber utilizing 400 Gbit/s transponders. The experimental results show that the power unevenness has been effectively compensated from 12 dB to 4 dB in the entire 11 THz range, making the received optical signal-to-noise ratio relatively flat (3.4 dB). Moreover, the capacity and distance product of this system is 83.6 Pbit/s·km (44 Tbit/s × 1900 km), and to the best of our knowledge, this is a record capacity and distance product in the real-time single-mode fiber transmission system.

Abstract:We have implemented a large-capacity, long-haul, and high spectral efficiency photonics-based polarization multiplexing communication system at W-band. The signal delivery up to 119.1 Gb/s with spectral efficiency of 9.9 bit/s/Hz is achieved over a 10 km optic-fiber link and 4600 m wireless link. In our study, we utilize an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme to compensate for the signal impairments caused by the dispersion effect and the wireless multipath effect. Based on a pair of antennas, the antenna polarization multiplexing technique is used to realize the polarization-multiplexed mm-wave signal delivery. Also, only one communication link is required, instead of the complex 2×2 line-of-sight multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) link. Instead of Cassegrain antennas, the combination of plano-convex lens and horn antenna greatly extends the wireless distance. For increasing the spectral efficiency and throughput of the communication system, we employ higher-order modulation formats, probabilistic shaping (PS) techniques, and a series of equalization algorithms. Based on photonics technology, we have created a record-setting distance-rate product of 547.9 Gb/s•km (119.1 Gb/s × 4.6 km) for an independent channel at W-band.

Abstract:Beam-steered infrared (IR) light communication has gained tremendous attention as one of the solutions of congested wireless communication traffic. High performance active beam-steering devices play a crucial role in data allocation and exchange. Conventional beam-steering devices such as spatial light modulator (SLM) and micro-electrical mechanical system (MEMS) mirror and the current emerging nonmechanical beam-steering metasurface-based devices are challenging to realize a large tunable steering angle beyond several degrees, which significantly hinders the spatial application of optical wireless communications (OWC). Herein, an angle-magnified liquid crystal (LC) metadevice consisting of LC metasurfaces and a liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) is proposed to realize active beam steering with a tunable large field of view (FOV). Based on the angle-magnified tunable LC metadevice, an intelligent bidirectional high-speed OWC system is experimentally demonstrated, achieving an actively enlarged FOV of 20° × 20°, with a data rate of 200 Gbps over the S/C/L band for both uplink and downlink transmission over a propagation distance of 1.5 m in free space. The proposed OWC system opens a new avenue for the future high performance wireless data transmission.

Abstract:We report on the successful implementation of a photonic-based beam steering approach for point-to-multipoint terahertz (THz) communications. The frequency-agile radiation properties of a THz leaky-wave antenna connected to a photodiode are utilized in the remote transmitter for generating multiple individually steerable THz beams. The approach benefits from the ultra-wide frequency tunability of optical heterodyne systems for frequency-agile THz beam steering. Moreover, the approach allows to exploit high performance and mature optical modulation techniques for generating THz beams with a high data capacity. In the THz receiver, a carrier frequency insensitive envelope THz detector based upon a single Schottky-barrier diode is used. In detail, THz communications in the 300 GHz band (WR3.4) with a maximum steering angle up to 90° is reported. Experimentally, for single steerable THz beam operation, a record high data rate of 35 Gbit/s at a wireless distance of 30 cm is achieved using two-level pulse amplitude modulation. Also, longer wireless distances up to 110 cm with 5 Gbit/s are demonstrated. Furthermore, point-to-multipoint THz communications is reported using two individually steerable THz beams carrying 10 Gbit/s and 5 Gbit/s over 70 cm and 50 cm, respectively.
