Abstract:We present experimental results on using optical transmission technologies such as I&Q modulators, digital coherent receivers, heterodyne up-conversion in fast photodiodes, to generate, transmit and detect high capacity wireless transmission. Both OFDM and QAM modulation formats are tested in the W-achieving capacities up to 100-Gbps with seamless optical fiber-wireless conversion.

Abstract:THz technology with extremely large bandwidth resources is considered as a promising candidate for future generation wireless systems. Particularly, compared to the electronic approach, the photonic approach exhibits a capability of breaking the electronic bandwidth bottleneck, and hence it has been widely used to develop high speed THz communication systems. In this paper, we present our recent development of photonics-aided 350 GHz transmission of beyond 100 Gbit/s, with a special focus on work of extending the wireless distance.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an 100 Gbit/s hybrid optical fiber-wireless link by employing photonic heterodyning up-conversion of optical 12.5 Gbaud polarization multiplexed 16-QAM baseband signal with two free running lasers. Bit-error-rate performance below the FEC limit is successfully achieved for air transmission distances up to 120 cm.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a 400 GHz carrier wireless transmission system with real-time capable detection and demonstrate transmission of a 60 Gbit/s signal derived from optical Nyquist channels in a 12.5 GHz ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing (UD-WDM) grid and carrying QPSK modulation. This is the highest data rate demonstrated for carrier frequencies above 300 GHz and also validates the feasibility of bridging between next generation 100 GbE wired data streams and indoor wireless applications.

Abstract:To accommodate the demand of exponentially increased global wireless data traffic, the prospective data rates for wireless communication in the market place will soon reach 100 Gb/s and beyond. In the lab environment, wireless transmission throughput has been elevated to the level of over 100 Gb/s attributed to the development of photonic-assisted millimeter wave and terahertz (THz) technologies. However, most of recent demonstrations with over 100 Gb/s data rates are based on spatial or frequency division multiplexing techniques, resulting in increased system's complexity and energy consumption. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a single channel 0.4 THz photonic-wireless link achieving a net data rate of beyond 100 Gb/s by using a single pair of THz emitter and receiver, without employing any spatial/frequency division multiplexing techniques. The high throughput up to 106 Gb/s within a single THz channel is enabled by combining spectrally efficient modulation format, ultrabroadband THz transceiver and advanced digital signal processing routine. Besides that, our demonstration from system-wide implementation viewpoint also features high transmission stability, and hence shows its great potential to not only decrease the system's complexity, butalsomeet the requirements of prospective data rates for bandwidth-hungryshort-range wireless applications.

Abstract:In this letter, we present a scalable high-speed W-band (75-110-GHz) fiber wireless communication system. By using an optical frequency comb generator, three-channel 8.3-Gb/s/ch optical orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OOFDM) baseband signals in a 15-GHz bandwidth are seamlessly translated from the optical to the wireless domain. The W-band wireless carrier is generated from heterodyne mixing the OOFDM baseband signal with a free-running laser. A W-band electronic down-converter and a digital signal processing-based receiver are used. Three-channel QPSK-OFDM W-band wireless signals are transmitted over 0.5- and 2-m air distance with and without 22.8-km single-mode fiber, respectively, with achieved performance below the forward error correction limit.

Abstract:Recently,wireless communication capacity has been witnessing unprecedented growth.Benefits from the optoelectronic components with large bandwidth,photonics-assisted terahertz[THz]communication links have been extensively devel-oped to accommodate the upcoming wireless transmission with a high data rate.However,limited by the available signal-to-noise ratio and THz component bandwidth,single-lane transmission of beyond 100 Gbit/s data rate using a single pair of THz transceivers is still very challenging.In this study,a multicarrier THz photonic wireless communication link in the 300 GHz band is proposed and experimentally demonstrated.Enabled by subcarrier multiplexing,spectrally efficient modu-lation format,well-tailored digital signal processing routine,and broadband THz transceivers,a line rate of 72 Gbit/s over a wireless distance of 30 m is successfully demonstrated,resulting in a total net transmission capacity of up to 202.5 Gbit/s.The single-lane transmission of beyond 200 Gbit/s overall data rate with a single pair of transceivers at 300 GHz is con-sidered a significant step toward a viable photonics-assisted solution for the next-generation information and communi-cation technology[ICT]infrastructure.

Abstract:We present a simple architecture for realizing high capacity W-band (75-110 GHz) photonics-wireless system. 42.13 Gbit/s 16QAM-OFDM optical baseband signal is obtained in a seamless 15 GHz spectral bandwidth by using an optical frequency comb generator, resulting in a spectral efficiency of 2.808 bits/s/Hz. Transparent photonic heterodyne up-conversion based on two free-running lasers is employed to synthesize the W-band wireless signal. In the experiment, we program an improved DSP receiver and successfully demonstrate photonics-wireless transmission of 8.9 Gbit/s, 26.7 Gbit/s and 42.13 Gbit/s 16QAM-OOFDM W-band signals, with achieved bit-error-rate (BER) performance below the forward error correction (FEC) limit.

Abstract:We present a detailed experimental investigation of a hybrid optical-fiber wireless communication system operating at the 75 to 110 GHz (W-band) for meeting the emerging demands in short-range wireless applications. Measured W-band wireless channel properties such as channel loss, frequency response, phase noise, and capacity are reported. Our proposed system performs a sextuple frequency up-conversion after 20 km of fiber transmission, followed by a W-band wireless link. Abstract:This Letter demonstrates a real-time 100-GbE fiber-wireless seamless integration system operating at the whole W band (75-110 GHz). Based on a pair of commercial digital coherent optical modules, the real-time transparent transmission of 125-Gb/s dual-polarized quadrature phase-shift keying signal has been successfully achieved over two-spans of 20-km fiber and up to 150-m electromagnetic dual-polarized single-input single-output wireless link. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first real-time demonstration of 100-GbE signal transmission over >100-m wireless distance at the millimeter-wave band based on photonics. We believed this real-time and high-speed fiber-wireless seamless integration system with a wireless coverage up to hundreds of meters can significantly accelerate the progress of upcoming 6G.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a seamlessly integrated fiber-wireless system that delivers a 108 Gb/s signal through 80 km fiber and 1 m wireless transport over free space at 100 GHz adopting polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) modulation and heterodyning coherent detection. The X- and Y-polarization components of the optical PDM-QPSK baseband signal are simultaneously upconverted to 100 GHz wireless carrier by optical polarization-diversity heterodyne beating, and then independently transmitted and received by two pairs of transmitter and receiver antennas, which form a 2 x 2 multiple-input multiple-output wireless link. At the wireless receiver, two-stage downconversion is performed firstly in the analog domain based on balanced mixer and sinusoidal radio frequency signal, and then in the digital domain based on digital signal processing (DSP). Polarization demultiplexing is realized by the constant modulus algorithm in the DSP part at the receiver. The bit-error ratio for the 108 Gb/s PDM-QPSK signal is less than the pre-forward-error-correction threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3) after both 1 m wireless delivery at 100 GHz and 80 km single-mode fiber-28 transmission. Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a record 400G optical wireless integration system simultaneously delivering 2 × 112 Gb/s two-channel polarization-division-multiplexing 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (PDM-16QAM) signal at 37.5 GHz wireless carrier and 2 × 108 Gb/s two-channel PDM quadrature phase shift keying (PDM-QPSK) signal at 100 GHz wireless carrier, adopting two millimeter-wave (mm-wave) frequency bands, two orthogonal antenna polarizations, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), photonic mm-wave generation and advanced digital signal processing (DSP). In the case of no fiber transmission, the bit error ratios (BERs) for both the 112 Gb/s PDM-16QAM signal after 1.5 m wireless delivery at 37.5 GHz and the 108 Gb/s PDM-QPSK signal after 0.7 m wireless delivery at 100 GHz are below the pre-forward-error-correction (pre-FEC) threshold of 3.8 × 10(-3). To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a 400G optical wireless integration system in mm-wave frequency bands and also a capacity record of wireless delivery.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a full-duplex bi-directional transmission optical wireless-over fiber integration system at W-band with the speed up to 15 Gb/s for both 95.4 GHz link and 88.6 GHz link for the first time. After 2 m wireless delivery and (20+20) km SMF-28 transmission, the BER for 15 Gb/s bi-directional links is below the FEC threshold when the OSNR is above 13.8 dB in the link of 95.4 GHz and 15.8 dB in the link of 88.6 GHz.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an ultrafast terahertz (THz) photonic wireless communication link in the 350 GHz band with up to 100 Gbit/s data rate, with an emphasis on extending its wireless reach. By combining the techniques of using a cutting-edge narrow-band uni-traveling-carrier photodiode (UTC-PD) as the THz photo-mixing emitter, spectrally efficient modulation formats and advanced digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms, we successfully transmit 25 GBaud/s 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) signals (overall 100 Gbit/s data rate) over a 350 GHz wireless link with an extended distance of 2 m. This achievement pushes the accessibility of ultrafast 100 Gbit/s wireless communication beyond the state-of-the-art, and makes 100 Gbit/s ultrafast THz wireless communication systems promising for future smart high speed wireless access services.

Abstract:In this letter, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a W-band (75-110 GHz) full-duplex transmission fiber-wireless-fiber system with the rate up to 60 Gb/s for the first time. Both the uplink and downlink in our proposed system consist of two spans of 80 km single-mode fiber-28 (SMF-28) and a 1-m wireless link. We experimentally demonstrate that our proposed system can simultaneously transmit a 60 Gb/s upstream quadrature-phase-shift-keying (QPSK) signal carried by 99 GHz carrier frequency over the uplink and a 60 Gb/s downstream QPSK signal carried by 101 GHz carrier frequency over the downlink. Both millimeter-wave generation and demodulation are enabled by photonic techniques. Wireless crosstalk that occurs between the uplink and the downlink is effectively avoided because the pair of antennas adopted in the uplink is polarization orthogonal to that adopted in the downlink. With the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of 20 dB, the bit error ratios (BERs) for 60 Gb/s signal transmission are less than the third-generation forward-error-correction (FEC) limitation of 2 x 10(-2).

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate several different approaches for the realization of over 100Gb/s fiber-wireless integration system, including optical PDM combined with MIMO reception, advanced multi-level modulation, optical multi-carrier modulation, electrical multi-carrier modulation, antenna polarization multiplexing and multi-band multiplexing. These approaches can effectively reduce the signal baud rate as well as the required bandwidth for optical and electrical devices. We also experimentally investigate the problems, such as multi-path effect due to different wireless transmission distance, existing in the large capacity fiber-wireless integration system. We experimentally demonstrate these problems can be effectively solved by advanced DSP algorithms including classic CMA.
